"Halt and Catch Fire"
Wed May-21-14 11:59 AM by ZooTown74

First episode is up here

http://www.amctv.com/full-episodes/halt-and-catch-fire/3571290828001/i-o-full-episode

SPOILER ALERT

I think I might have just seen what might be the shortest game of Centipede I've seen played since the days of the old arcade video game show Starcade (not "Starrcade," which is different)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starcade

Ol' girl seems to be going for a Some Kind of Wonderful-era Mary Stuart Masterson vibe, from the short hair on down

After watching, I'll keep watching but I was kinda eh on it. It's a good pilot, it does what it's supposed to do plot-wise as far as setting up the premise of the show, but the characters aren't all that interesting to me yet.

Joe (Lee Pace) and Gordon (Scott McNairy) show promise, and of course you can't possibly know everything there is to know about the characters in the pilot, but they were still kind of... stock: the renegade and the buttoned-up genius are fitna team up! And, seeing as the show's set in Dallas, you'd think Toby Huss' drawl wouldn't have been bothersome, but it stuck out like a sore thumb and threw me out of the show a couple of times.

I will mention that I am glad that the setting (1983), at least in the pilot, is not a character on the show, like it is on a show like, say, The Goldbergs. There's no real fetishizing/pimping of nostalgia for 80s artifacts like the Porsche or the Centipede arcade game or the Speak-n-Spell. These objects exist in this world, but they're NOT the world: in other words, the show isn't showing me these items in order to elicit a nostalgic reaction. Granted, this is supposed to be a drama and The Goldbergs is allegedly a comedy, but the difference is refreshing.

I'll just cop to wanting to see where it goes.

With computers replacing advertising.

Well made, strong performances, but I can't say I was all that interested in following the story or the characters any further.

Then again, I couldn't get into Mad Men either so it might just be me.

I'm glad it didn't fetishize the 80's too much (the coin on a string is relatively obscure and I loved it though).

Lee Pace is doing a great Don Draper. That's a good thing.

Scoot McNairy is excellent just playing Scoot McNairy however Kerry Bishe's "You're killing yourself inside, husband!" parts were groanworthy. I do like the fact that she's herself an engineer as well.

Mackenzie Davis. Always dug her. I love the part where she calls that dude a fascist for kicking her out of his bar. So good.

Love Toby Huss being all piss and vinegar while looking UP at Lee Pace (holy shit Lee Pace is tall as fuck).

BTW, if you don't recognize the voice, Toby Huss was also General Treister from Venture Bros.

i'm out.

i thought the sex scene was a little lazy as a plot point, but i liked how she flipped it on him at the end. the two of them could have had friction enough (yuppy sales guy vs. punk programmer) without resorting to that.

also didn't like how macmillan was 5 steps ahead of everyone. i assume we'll get to see some of his flaws a little down the line as his history catches up to him, but he was a little too perfect. at least the owner of cardiff rightfully blew up at him.

I don't have many summer shows so I checked in on this again.

It's solid enough but I still don't really care about any of the characters. In fact, I think Scoot McNairy's wife should probably leave him. I thought the car accident was a little much. Thought that could have been handled in a better fashion.

I did appreciate the fake out that the tattoo was going to lead to a revelation.

But there's just not much to it. Nobody's really struggling with their demons, they're playing to them to get what they want. The question of "Is this worth it?" could be an interesting one but it hasn't really been presented, let alone investigated. Right now, it just is playing like a somber look into the invention of the laptop and little more.

watched most of the third, or whatever one they had that parking lot fight and then checked in again sunday when they had floppy disk freak out with the journalist there. it was groan-worthy to me.

i was interested when they painted this show as a group of upstarts vs. IBM, david vs. goliath. for instance, i thought them cracking IBMs code would take more than a 1/2 hour in the pilot. i'm not sure how sustainable a show that would have been either, but the joe macmillan mystery hour does nothing for me.

I like it, but I'm also not invested

It's hard to dramatize creative genius. Cause a lot of it is the creator/artist/intellectual staring into space or sturggling with his medium

McKenzie Davis has a unique interesting character to work with but they were short sighted in making her fuck Bisexual Weirdo Charisma Wounded Chest Salesman

AMC also really needs to hire women writers they damn near painted this wife into a corner too, before she saved punk girl's code. I was like shit, another "unlikable wife"? #breakingbad #madmen #walkingdead

Like BrooklynWhat though I know its gunna get canceled and don't know if I should invest

Lastly the lack of a concrete year and the geek language throws it into a strange space of visual abstraction

Ohh soundtrack is dope as fuck. I like all the punk juxtapose corporate / wealthy settings and new wave over texas, which by the way, why only the bosses got accents

good dynamics and reveals for each of the characters.

i don't know how they going to wrap this up, being that it's not a critical darling and it seems no one is watching, so it's gunna get canceled I assume

at times it doesn't feel 80s enough and I feel lost in the tech history of things.

overall it's been a 3/5 series

Show should DEFINITELY get a second season.
If Hell on Wheels can get at least 2 out of AMC...
They deserve another.
I'm with you though, I don't know how it's gonna end
and probably had to write it as if it was the final episode
of series.

I have been pleased with the 2nd half of the season.
Was a sloooooow start but its been rewarding for
those that have stuck with it till the end.

Some of the tech stuff is geeked out but
I like to read articles talking about stuff mentioned on the show.

Cameron is a pretty little thing and I love Donna.
She's sulked a lot this season - unhappy wife,
not content with own work, jealous of what's happening
with Gordon then saves his ass
3-4 times without receiving any credit besides last night.
Probably smarter than him.
Moments where she seems weak, other times STRONG, real leader.
Plus I was hoping we might get a hot sex scene with her
like Cameron got multiple times. Like I said, love Donna.
They've done a good job with her character.

As well as Cameron and Joe.

Gordon's been a prick most of the season.
Made a ballsy BUSINESS decision last night and it appeared
to have worked. Then we get the Macintosh, it was PERFECT.

Total punch to the gut. Cameron was right all along.
Speaking of Cameron, when Joe walks into the room...
Anybody immediately think of BOOGIE NIGHTS?
Where dude always walks into a crowded room
and sees his wife being piped by a different guy with a group
of people gathered around watching?

I hope it gets a second season, this is the only show
I'm watching every week besides Masters of Sex.

i liked it but i think the creators fumbled the ball. it's like they didn't believe in the characters and story enough so they had to throw some fuck shit into it like Joe hitting on that rich woman's wife.

it'd take a miracle to get a 2nd season which is a shame because it's finally getting to the cameron & donna storyline which is what i wanted to see for a while.

you can't serve up a show like this at 10pm on sundays and expect much though.

I thought the last episodes came together because it was about their relationships and working towards their goal. Joe just needed to be a renegade guy from out of nowhere who would do whatever it took to get what he wants (even the husband.) I mean, he makes his big climatic gesture and burns the truck... and then we cut to the future as if nothing had happened.

I enjoyed it and appreciated that they flipped the nagging wife cliche and made Gordon's girl be in the right and saving the day. I probably wouldn't recommend it and not sure I'd tune in to a second season but it was good enough for summer viewing.

I agree with you BW, the show should've been about the women. Brooding Gordon was annoying much of the time, as was bi-sex never satisfied rich boy

too often the show seemed to not know where it wanted to go and just created conflict for the sake of it.

there was no need for Joe to burn up the damn truck

and no need to have Gordon and Donna get car jacked

but I kept watching and not mad i did.

>'Halt and Catch Fire' Renewed at AMC
7:06 AM PDT 8/20/2014 by Kimberly Nordyke, Lesley Goldberg

Season two will premiere next summer

AMC has renewed Halt and Catch Fire for a second season. The 1980s computer drama is scheduled to return next summer.

Halt and Catch Fire — starring Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy and created by Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers, with Jonathan Lisco as showrunner — explores the personal computing boom.
The renewal was a bit unexpected as the series opened to rave reviews, but just 1.2 million total viewers after an aggressive online and on-demand sampling effort that saw the series become the first show to premiere on Tumblr. Halt's 1.2 million viewers was 900,000 less than AMC's debut of the also renewed Revolutionary War drama Turn.

The series ended its first season in early August with 574,000 total viewers — inching up to just under 1 million when adding seven days of DVR playback. Among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 set, the series drew a 0.3 rating, off considerably from its 1.6 million average. Overall, Halt averaged 1.2 million viewers, down form the 1.8 million that AMC's Low Winter Sun drew a year ago. The latter series was canceled after one run.
AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement that the network is giving the show time to grow.

“This is a show about invention, experimentation and the inherent risks in trying to break new ground – themes that really resonate with us as a network and attracted a passionate audience,” Collier said. “We have a history of demonstrating patience through the early seasons of new shows, betting on talent and building audience over time. We see that opportunity here and look forward to a second season.”

Said Lisco, Cantwell and Rogers in a joint statement: “Our series about creation, innovation and taking bold risks wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for our partners at AMC, a network known for these very things. Harnessing the momentum of our first season, this next chapter will take the rich characters our audience has come to love in new and surprising directions.”

Meanwhile, fellow AMC rookie Turn has also been renewed for a second run after it averaged 2 million viewers an episode during its 10-episode run this summer. Also on AMC's roster for 2015: Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul, the remainder of Mad Men's final season as well as martial arts drama Badlands, which was picked up straight to series.

On the development side, AMC is prepping a companion series to The Walking Dead eyed for 2015 as well as drama pilots White City, Knifeman and Galyntine as well as comedy We Hate Paul Revere.

Halt was one of two computer-themed series to debut this year. The second, HBO's Silicon Valley, is up for best comedy series at the Emmys.
