"Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch, 2014)"

Really dug this shit. My nigga Jimmy said that he had action scenes written, but when it was requested he have more action scenes, he took all the action scenes out and make it as sparse as possible.

The film is really hypnotic and the scenes of Adam driving Eve around a hallowed out Detroit was a nice bit of social commentary, that I'll let y'all discuss.

Also, Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton have amazing chemistry. And without that chemistry this film would not work at all. The vampire shit comes second to these two character's relationship to each other.

Surprisingly, there's a lot off humor in this film, that had me and a few of my colleagues laughing hard.

Just a word of advice, have patience and see this when you're awake as this is a slow talky film about love and life.

Not just visually, but also the story and dialogue. It's hauntingly romantic and gothic without being laughably morose. Like you said, the casting is key here, and there is not a single misstep in that regard. Hiddleston and Swinton are magnetic together. And Hurt's Marlow, even with what little screentime he has is fantastic.

Jarmusch outdid himself here. I'd love to know what those action scenes you mentioned were all about.

The writers seemed to assume that the audience is well versed with the mechanics of vampire lore.

So they didn't waste any time explaining any of it.

Yet vampires are supposed to have super human strength...it bugged me immensely that Adam and Eve struggled together to carry Ian's body to and from the car.

Other than that, I thought the film was damn near flawless and I'll be watching it many more times over the coming years I'm sure.

Sublime. Vampires used as prism to explore addiction, technology, the role of science in everyday life, the love of books and music, the desolation of Detroit, and of course love. Tilda and Hiddleston were perfect choices for these roles, a blend of seriousness, humor, aloofness, and desire. Jefferey Wright was excellent, as usual, in his two scenes, and Mia Wasikowska came on screen at the perfect time. (By the way, she got a lil' bubble behind her). Ohh and John Hurt was great as well.

the look of the film and movement of the camera was almost hypnotic, and the final music scene was mesmerizing.

Jim Jarmusch is just one of the most original, and subtly enjoyable film makers around. This definitely is top 5 of the year for me.

20. "The blood"
In response to Reply # 0

I just watched it tonight. Co-sign on all the comments here. Good, intelligent contributions by people, so thanks for that.

I had a glass of Merlot while the film was on, the wine became a lot less appealing as i watched the film.

The drinking of the blood was clever, the consuming was done in such a reverential way, it really was what kept them alive. And their expressions were as if they were on a massive high, like a meth hit, lol.

The blood popsicles, how droll. C'mon no-one else mentioned this?

I'm going to guess the action scenes which were cut would have involved Adam's "ninja" skills and very quick movements. But the film is better for not having the action scenes.

It seems Fassbender was originally meant to play Adam but he had to move on as the film struggled to get financing.

I didn't know Jarmusch's band SQÜRL provided some of the music.

Tangiers looks beautiful, got to get myself there in the next few years. Loved the commentary on Detroit too.
