I ask because I've only just seen Barry Lyndon and it's shot into my top three.
I couldn't fit Spartacus or Eyes Wide Shut on there (Kubrick didn't consider Spartacus to be one of "*his* films anyway), and same story with Killer's Kiss or The Killing.
Honourable mention to AI, which was pretty dope (when you take out the Spielberg cheese).

always something clumsy about the execution - too stiff or flat-footed - 2001, clockwork orange, full metal jacket, etc. Just lacking pizazz or excitement.
His black and white films have the veneer of being "disciplined" or "on-point" sort of like Hitchcock.

Clumsy about the execution? More like FLAWLESSLY PERFECT. Maybe you mean his funniest movies were in black and white and his more serious movies in color. Or the fact that his reputation as THE PERFECT DIRECTOR was cemented with his color films, thus you're watching "A KUBRICK MOVIE" when you watch his color movies and perhaps "a Kubrick movie" with his B&Ws. But there is no director who has ever been more disciplined or on-point than Kubrick. We're talking DOWN TO THE FRAME. You can easily make a case for 9 of his films being PERFECT, not a single note in error. Discipline isn't something one can have a veneer of.

13. "People are mad, but "stiff" and "cold" are common Kubrick criticisms." In response to Reply # 2 Sun Apr-06-14 08:09 PM by Frank Longo
Critics have accused Kubrick of this for over fifty years now.
Just know that despite everyone here calling you an idiot over something that's a totally arguable opinion, you're not alone.
That having been said... I'm not with you. At least in terms of excitement. His visuals are intentionally "cold," but that doesn't diminish the excitement I get watching them, for me, personally.
But yeah, just didn't want the usual backlash committee to try and beat you into submission without someone pointing out that some brilliant critics have argued the exact same thing.

of all the critiques I've ever heard of Kubrick, "clumsy execution" was not among the criticisms.

well not the exact same thing really. and some of those "brilliant" critics had no idea what they were talking about either.

24. "I wouldn't use the word clumsy..." In response to Reply # 21
... but when he further described why he felt it was clumsy, he used adjectives critics have been using for half a century.
These same critics have used the same criticism on the Coen Brothers. I disagree with both assertions. But I'm not going to dogpile the dude for making an argument I've heard from some very smart people in the past.
9. "For a man who made 9 PERFECT MOVIES..." In response to Reply # 0
...I'm surprised there's any debate about his best. It's 2001. The man seemed to make a living at breaking boundaries in film, but no film of his breaks more. You'd be hard pressed to say any film of his does something better than 2001, with the exception of acting performance. But even that can't be held against 2001 - it's just 2 actors for most of the film; whereas most of his other films feature career-defining performances. Also bear this in mind: dude got an acting performance out of a glowing red dot.

for me its always been a fight between Strangelove vs 2001 , I absolutely love comedic actors and Sellers was the man in this and it just showed for me.
2001 was definitely a game changer and influenced so many new things and people who wanted to work in the aerospace engineering world as well as those who made films about said world and as well as other fictional science fiction worlds. The visuals, story-everything was amazing but for me I just thought Strangelove was a little better and I give it a little nod over 2001. _____________________________________________________ "You can win with certainty with the spirit of "one cut".
