- Brie Larson. Real earnest, big eyes, expressive emotions. Best known for 21 Jump Street, best work is Short Term 12.
- Shailene Woodley. Sweet, girl next door vibe, but terrific depth of emotion, and surprisingly subtle for an actress her age. Best known for Divergent, best work is The Spectacular Now. Also was nominated for an Oscar for The Descendants. Going to break out even more this year with The Fault in Our Stars.
- Elizabeth Olsen. The best of the Olsen siblings. Also earnest, smart. About to be in both Godzilla and the next Avengers film. Best known for her siblings at this point, best work is Martha Marcy May Marlene.
- Emayatzy Corinealdi. Loved loved loved her in Middle of Nowhere two years ago-- unsurprisingly while all these other talented young actresses get TV shows and blockbuster movie roles, the gorgeous young black actress remains in obscurity with no big role on the horizon. I'd still keep an eye on this one.
- Saoirse Ronan. Been in a lot already, only will continue to get better. The Irish Elizabeth Taylor-- will be HUGE one day. Great in Atonement, The Lovely Bones, but my favorite of hers is Hanna.

This one isn't a younger woman, but Jessica Chastain should probably rise to Meryl Streep levels of fame one day and one day soon. Homegirl is phenomenal.

Agreed with everything Frank Longo said. Some amazing picks.

As far as top actresses I'm checking for *right now*, I'd go with Adele Exarchopoulos, Marion Cotillard, Elle Fanning, Shailene Woodley, Carey Mulligan, and Tilda Swinton. Amy Ryan and Vera Farmiga would be near the very top of my list, but they aren't getting any big roles for some strange reason.

Generally speaking, here are some of my favourite female performances:

- Gena Rowlands (A Woman Under The Influence)
- Adele Exarchopoulos (Blue Is The Warmest Color)
- Nicole Kidman (Birth)
- Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone)
- Carrey Mulligan (Shame)
- Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive)
- Vera Farmiga (Up In The Air)
- Juliette Binoche (Lovers On The Bridge)
- Julie Delpy (Before Trilogy)
- Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days)
- Marion Cotillard (Rust & Bone, The Immigrant, Public Enemies)
- Ronit Elkabetz (Late Marriage)
- Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now)
- Elle Fanning (Ginger & Rosa, Super 8)
- Jackie Weaver (Animal Kingdom)
- Maggie Cheung (In The Mood For Love)
- Emanuelle Riva (Amour, Hiroshima Mon Amour)
- Kate Jarvis (Fish Tank)
- Franka Potente (Run Lola Run)
- Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)
- Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha, Greenberg)

Julianne Moore, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Emily Watson, Emily Blunt, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchette, Amy Adams, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rosario Dawson, Laura Linney, Penelope Cruz, Saoirse Ronan, Elizabeth Olsen and Eva Green are usually great in everything they're in.

... and that it's someone we already know, Rosario Dawson.

Someone needs to make a kickass up-and-coming black actresses list. Maybe after LA Film Fest this year I can have a deeper idea.

You're right. Brutal. Didn't even notice.

I actually meant to put Zoe Saldana on there, but forgot. That scene on the bridge in OUT OF THE FURNACE was perfection.

Shareeka Epps was incedible in HALF NELSON but don't think I've seen her since.

Can't wait to see Quvenzhané Wallis in more films.

How could I forget Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong'o?! That was real stupid on my part.

I liked Tashiana Washington in GIMME THE LOOT. Looking forward to more of her.

Yaya Alafia's been solid in smaller roles.

Sanaa Lathan was awesome about ten years ago. Had a great run with Brown Sugar, Love & Basektball, etc.

Who else... Octavia Spencer, Kerry Washington. Also great.

Biggest problem is they're not given many good or big roles. That's what sucks most.

Thanks for this very necessary observation. Seriously.

Forgot to mention Berenice Bejo. Solid in THE ARTIST, and very good in THE PAST.

I mean black mirror for Lenora

Ruth was great as Shirley bassey
And I love Shirley
She's been popping up in agents of shield and doing a good villainess job with the little they give her

my favorite actress is Alfre Woodard. anything she's in...i'm there

beyond that this would have been much harder had you asked for the best male actresses

i'd be a little stumped there
