speaking as an uber hardcore 24 geek -- who's watched the entire series multiple times, bought the companion books, read the comics and the novels, etc -- even i can admit that the show would benefit greatly from tighter, more streamlined storytelling. 12 eps is just about right.

1) new jacks (no pun intended) may not appreciate it like veterans;

2) damn right he's lost a step. you think you can fuck up all them people with years going by and still be AS SHARP?

3) despite the greatness of season 5, 12 hours isn't a bad look at all. the problem often seen is that a normal story arc is resolved in 12-14 episodes, but because of the requirement for 24, some OTHER shit had to pop off after crisis one was averted. shit got stretched thin quite often.

4) this series was ALWAYS better to me watched in bunches, week to week sucked. with that said, i'm about to go through a major push with my business which will trim down my already anorexic tv viewing schedule even more, so when the smoke clears i'll be able to go through a bunch of episodes in one sitting. needless to say i won't be back up in THIS post before september.

5) they making sarah (fuck hannah and this name, CHUCK put her ass on the scene for real) a Jack clone with the quickness. even had her on that "sonofabitch" line that Jack always uses

6) emo Chloe makes sense since her husband and child are dead. she's a hacker for life but has less to live for. there's gonna be hell to pay for her man who set jack up though.

7) when is Tony Almeda gonna pop back up?

So you think it's over? As I understand it, it's getting JUST good enough ratings for a renewal for next summer. Probably a coin flip. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it keep going, the way they ended it. Honestly, if they aren't gonna renew it, I'd rather have seen Jack go down in a blaze of glory, rather than whisked away to an unknown end (didn't sound like they were gonna kill him, at least right away).

MATTERFACT, I bet if it's renewed, Jack's boy and Chloe and Kate going after him in Russia, like Luke freeing Leia and Han. Might actually be a fun twist, to have it be minimally about Jack, and more of an exploration of new characters with linkages provided to the past. If it means more Yvonne Strahovski (or honestly probably even if it doesn't), I am all. The. Way. In.

They were supposed to do one after the finale in 2010 but it never seemed to get traction. If I remember correctly, Fox seriously entertained a Die Hard/24 crossover, which would've been kind of weird, but certainly better than Die Hard 5. I think with the ratings being too low for a regular season show, but decent for summer, they'll be comfortable spending the money to shoot another short season, but it seems like interest fell off too much to risk a $100M movie.

Its not as great as say GOT, or even some of the great Madmen episodes, but this shit is so damn entertaining ans way more fun than other action shows.

- When jack got the sword I knew it was a wrap. I jumped off my damn couch though. That shit was so good.

I knew someone had to go, and I figured it was going to be Audrey. Like Chloe and Jack are untouchable at this point, so its gotta be someone who the audience would care about but not wreck their chances of coming back. That's Audrey to a T. That shit was fucked up man.

- The Presidential speech, like someone else said above was probably the most beautifully gutwrenching thing they've ever written on this show, and kudos to the actor who pulled it off. Shit was good. The whole idea that he's been fighting to keep this shit a secret to finally give in at this point was just heartbreaking man. The Prime Minister's face was pretty much pitch perfect.
