"O so nothing on Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in Superman-Batman?"

Thought y'all woulda threatened to burn down the Internet by now...

>Jesse Eisenberg Cast as Lex Luthor in 'Superman-Batman'
9:55 AM PST 1/31/2014 by Tatiana Siegel

Warner Bros. also announced that Jeremy Irons is set to play Alfred in the Zack Snyder film.

Warner Bros. has found its Lex Luthor.

Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as comic-book super-villain, while and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman-Batman film.

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” Snyder said in a statement. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The casting of Lex Luther has spawned rumors for months, with everyone from Bryan Cranston to Joaquin Phoenix said to be in the mix.

As for the role of Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, Snyder called the role, “an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman.” He added, “It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
Eisenberg is best known for his starring role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s The Social Network. He also starred in Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love and Louis Letterier’s Now You See Me. He next appears in The Double and Night Moves.

Irons’ recent work includes playing Rodrigo Borgia in Neil Jordan’s acclaimed Showtime series The Borgias.

Man of Steel’s stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are set to return.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016.

In response to Reply # 0

Lex should be in his early 30s and Bruce/Batman in his mid-late 40s.
I wonder if writers will play into age/generation difference at all.

I like the Einsenberg casting though.

Hope he keeps his hair too.

Looks like they're going with the young prodigy angle. Better than seeing the same Luthor over and over and over and over. And dude can act, so that's not at issue.

Love it.

He's a great candidate to play a megalomaniac, obviously.

Does it work in context? Obviously I'm skeptical, because, y'know, Snyder, and the whole cluttered hero movie thing.

But it's not boring.

I like it. I was a fan of Michael Rosenbaum's Lex in Smallville and can see Eisenberg doing something similar altho hard to develop with all these characters in one movie.

Because Jeremy Irons scares me more than anyone else in this flick.

Eisenberg is an interesting choice but, shit, I might have just gone with Shia as the villain if they were headed in this direction.

Neither the plot nor the execution of the characters will be firmly rooted in established comic book mythology (although I'm less familiar with some of the more obscure storylines and/or alternate universes in the DC world, so I can't really say if that's true or if it's just people who aren't in the know whining about casting choices per usual).

Engrage me twice and well, I should have known better.

After Affleck and Snyder, I can't imagine people are still fired up and expecting the best from this. Also, Eisenberg is so far out of nowhere that it's almost too shocking to get that upset.

IE, Kaiser Soze/House of Cards Lex incarnate Kevin Spacey playing him like a cartoon in Superman Returns.

I like Jesse because he seems to have a dark core that goes beyond his acting...remember this interview?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya-CrS3eKMM

If he's able to draw on that "Im smarter then you" attitude, I think he might pull a Heath Ledger re-imagining of the character.

Thus far, the only casting choice worth any real scrutiny is Gal as Diana. That isn’t to say that there aren’t signs of trouble- there are- but casting really isn’t one of those signs.

Personally, I was hoping like hell for Cranston. That’s an obvious choice, a safe choice, and let’s face it: it’s a great choice.
This, on the other hand, is an inspired choice. Eisenberg is an intriguing choice to me. One can easily point to his character in The Social Network as the seeds of an eventually Luthor-sized megalomania. His portrayal of Zuckerberg was ruthless, cold, and calculating. Sounds like the Lex I know. Despite the reservations of some in here, I’m betting Jesse is smart enough not to turn in a Zuckerberg: Part Two performance. I’m betting we’ll see traces of that, but we’ll most likely see a markedly different character in his Luthor portrayal.

Of course, I’m significantly more optimistic about this movie than most of you, and I also loved MOS, unlike most of you, so there is that. That isn’t to say I think it’s all going to pan out like gangbusters, just that I’m hopefully optimistic and I haven’t seen anything significant enough to derail that optimism. All I’m saying about the choice of Eisenberg for Lex is that Eisenberg has proven to have good enough chops that he deserves more faith than he’s being given. At a minimum, I do think that anyone expecting to see a slew of snarky one liners spew from Lex’s mouth in BvS will most likely come away disappointed.

Eisenberg is a fine actor and I think he would slay any role he was handed.

That said.

With the rumors of Cranston, I was hoping we were finally moving away from the movie version of Lex Luthor (career criminal, schemer, generally unsuccessful in life) and more towards the comic book/JLU version of Lex (powerful, ruthless, successful in every aspect of his life, physically imposing to anyone who wasn't Superman).

While Eisenberg could definitely do some of these things, there's nothing in the world that will make me believe that, when he walks into a room everyone fears for their life. That he would and could kill you himself but won't because it might make him late for something.

So in that respect, I am disappointed.

this guy's defining role has him turning from mild mannered science teacher to "the one who knocks"..... maybe SOME people are still just thinking of him as Malcom's dad, but they would be wrong thinking cranston is "just" that... his locker has great work in it...maybe i'm misunderstanding you....

...when there wasn't a Walter White on his resume. When he was just a henpecked, ineffectual husband.

"there's nothing in the world that will make me believe that, when he walks into a room everyone fears for their life. That he would and could kill you himself but won't because it might make him late for something."

People would've said the same shit. And been wrong.

Who knows what dark, commanding, fearsome shit Eisenberg has in his locker too? I'd give good actors the benefit of the doubt that they can do shit that isn't on their resume.

Michael Cera in an oversized purple suit telling hacky jokes while fighting Batman? I'll pay double to see that.

The fact that they're already saying that they are going away from the comic books tells me; this movie will more likely suck. WB is over-thinking this. They've had the right for the DC Universe for decades, now. What they've produced is a lot more misses than hits. The last Superman was barely a success but it looks like they're getting way too confident. Eisenberg is a horrible choice. Lex Luthor is an iconic character with a strong physical presence and eloquence. Eisenberg claim to fame is playing spastic, nervous, blabbing teenagers characters that gets pushed around. How are we confident that he 'll be able to play a character that iconically is the contrary to all that? Lex is confident, calculating and menacing. There's a whole buncha young actors out there that fit that bill a lot better than Eisenberg does. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised but I ain't buying it. The bad guy in action movies is the reason you care about the story. If you don't buy the bad guy, the story will suffer.Hopefully it's a version of Eisenberg we haven't seen yet, because Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill whooping Jessie Eisenberg's ass is not the hardest thing in the world to believe.
