Most pundits had that down. That's where they relegate "artsy" films: to the Screenplay category.

Just checked oscar.com and the film, here, should be changed to 'Nebraska.'

Lol, wasn't sure which was the typo, and thought for a moment Idris Elba got a nod.

My guess is that while Tom was busy shilling for Saving Mr. Banks, Mr. McConaughey was working the crowds extra hard for Dallas Buyers Club and he got in at the last second

Not to mention Leo coming late in the year with that monstrous WOWS performance

Even with that snub, and the snub of Joaquin in Her, I'm still good with the category in its final form.

Off break, there were 3 notable snubs in the director category: Paul Greengrass, Lee Daniels, Spike Jonze.

Best Actor was an absolutely BRUTAL category this year. Lee Daniels' The Butler and Fruitvale are two examples of the dangers of releasing films so early in the year (although, to be honest, there were plenty of chances for voters to see these movies at screenings, and I'm sure they received screeners for the movies as well)

The GOAT. Again.

It will be pointless to get Internet upset when Jennifer Lawrence wins Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle. It'd be nice if she didn't, but it will probably happen.

Good to see Pharrell get nominated for that catchy-as-shit tune. Also good to see Arcade Fire get nominated too.

That was one of the best movies I've seen in the past ten years, as close to perfect as a film can get imo.

If Jennifer Lawrence wins for playing a bitch and dancing around her living room instead of Lupita I'm gonna be pissed. American Hustle was so wack btw, confused by anybody co-signing that corny, failed attempt at a Scorsese knockoff.

I don't know why I let these award shows like the Oscars/Grammys get to me. I understand there's a lot of bullshit politics involved, but it sucks to see great art go by unrecognized, makes me fear it'll be forgotten in the future.

Wolf of Wall Street showed just how unsuccessful AH was at attempting the Scorsese formula of narrations, music selections, comedy, debauchery, etc. Besides the last 15 min when an actual twist occurred, American Hustle was 2+ hours of Hollywood stars wearing their hair funny.

Maybe it's because I'm not buying into the Jennifer Lawrence/Amy Adams hype machine, but I did not like that flick at all. It's like the movie producers sat around and asked, "How can we win an Oscar?" "Oh I know, put Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Amy Adams in a movie together. Is Marty available to direct? No? Shit...alright better bring in DeNiro."

This crap getting nominated over Fruitvale Station (again, one of the best films of the past ten years) and Inside Llewyn Davis is laughably pathetic.

Glad you enjoyed it though.

lupita's speech at the critic's choice was pretty gracious and moving, and her performance was obviously and objectively better. i think she's gonna get some major underdog love.

easily one of the best films of the year. got tons of love underground, but nothing from the major awards. should've been in the running for best pic, director, actor, and screenplay, maybe even supporting for octavia. it was getting tons of buzz all summer, then someone walked it into the vacants, and no one's talked about it since.

The Croods was absolutely terrible. But it had pretty colors. Despicable Me 2 was not good either. Frozen deserves a nod. But not to win. Which it should easily with this competition.

even the eighth or ninth best nominee was damn good. especially on the women's side. and Russell just knows how to film Oscar bait -- that's 25 nominations combined for his last three movies.

In response to Reply # 0

step 1: find a role you're not even remotely right for
step 2: gain or lose 30 pounds to kinda sorta fit the role
step 3: collect oscar nom

i know everyone's in awe of matthew mcconaughey's work in dallas buyers club, but let's keep it really real. the weight loss was doing 90% of the work. it was a good performance, no doubt. really good. but he's sweeping these awards like he's daniel day, and it wasn't even close to that. wasn't even his best performance this year. for my money, give me a jackie earl haley or a john hawkes in the same role, and sure nobody goes to see it, but at least i get to enjoy the movie without worrying mcconaughey's gonna die over this vanity project.

christian bale in american hustle: laughable. not even a good performance. better than his academy award winning debacle in the fighter, but still. it was a flashy, theatrical, unnecessary distraction from the actual acting that amy adams was doing. congrats, academy, you just nominated 30 pounds and a comb-over for an oscar. yeah, no need to put a john goodman in that role, since he's actually right for it and hilarious. let's just force-feed batman for a few months.

i fell asleep halfway through nebraska. it was awful. bruce dern is clearly collecting that alan arkin memorial "hey, look, it's an old guy acting like an old guy" nomination. THAT over tom hanks's best performance since saving private ryan? FAT BATMAN over tom hanks's best performance since saving private ryan? one of the worst snubs in years.

the david o. russell thing has reached ridiculous heights. second year in a row he gets four actors nominated in four categories, and like last year, only one is even remotely deserving (adams). the screenplay nom is funny, the directing nom is not. so many ugly snubs in that category. i like j.law quite a bit, but she really wasn't doing anything much different than she did in silver linings. her win last year was highly questionable (wallis/chastain/watts better), but we'll allow it. this year, it'd be an absolute tragedy for her to get it over lupita. i get that she's hollywood's it girl-- deservedly so-- and everyone wants to sit next to her at lunch, but can we not turn this into a high school prom?

someone please explain to me how you give alexander payne a directing nod over guys like greengrass and jonze? what, for shooting his movie in black and white? for making will forte look like a passable actor? is this really how far we've fallen?

jared leto-- good performance, but again, the wig and makeup were doing most of the work. fassbender was head and shoulders over everyone in the supporting actor category. then again, he was head and shoulders over everyone in the best actor category a few years ago for shame and didn't even get nominated, so we're making progress. maybe he should gain 30 pounds and star in that jared fogle biopic everyone keeps passing on.

Oscars are such a joke, I wish they held less legitimacy in the public's eye. Awards are given based on everything except the actual quality of the work, way too much politics and groupthink involved.

To me, Shame is precisely the type of empty pretentious thing trying overly hard to be art that you accuse plenty of Latte nominees of being.

Then again, I'm in the minority on that one. Just odd that you of all people would love it so much-- I would've hoped you'd be on my side on that one.

Not that it's his fault that the script gave us such gems as "Orgy Sad Face" and "Gay Hookup Sad Face" and "Assorted Other Sad Faces."

But outside of Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor, I wouldn't have nommed any of those performances that year that did get noms (though I didn't see A Better Life), so I guess you have a point re: that particular field. I would've rather seen Michael Shannon for Take Shelter, John Boyega for Attack the Block, and either of the guys from Warrior that year-- obviously wishful thinking though.
