but I feel like it has a home there with GRIMM on right before it.

I mean, it barely made a dent on Thursdays: ELEMENTARY, SCANDAL *AND* HANNIBAL three shows all with decidedly LOUD and determined fans?!

yea it probably get trounced in the ratings by BlueBloods. *BUT* Fridays at 10pm makes the ONLY sense for the show.

Bryan Fuller did say, after the end of season 1, that Will would be in a fucked up place *BUT* become way more scrappy and determined to go after Hannibal.

*AND* he did hint that Hannibal is going to be in some trouble of his own....

Michael Pitt Takes Mason Verger Role on NBC's Hannibal
Source: EW
January 31, 2014
Tweet7 0

On the heels of the just released promo for the upcoming second season of NBC's "Hannibal," comes word, via EW, that "Boardwalk Empire" star Michael Pitt will be playing Mason Verger, who is set to be introduced in the latter part of the second season.

Verger, Thomas Harris fans will recall, is a rich patient of Dr. Lecter's who unwisely begins to play a deadly game when he discovers Hannibal's secrets. In Ridley Scott's 2001 film Hannibal, Verger (who had, as a result of his actions, been horribly disfigured) was played in heavy prosthetics by Gary Oldman.

Returning February 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with an episode titled "Kaiseki," "Hannibal" season two begins with Will Graham still in custody for murder. Dr. Lecter steps in to help when bodies wash up on a riverbank. The big question is whether or not Dr. Bloom will be able to help Will regain his memories.

The series stars Hugh Dancy as expert criminal profiler Will Graham, who has a unique ability to peer into the mind of serial killers. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist who is helping with the cases and, unbeknownst to Will, is also a serial killer himself. Laurence Fishburne stars as Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park also co-star.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/02/24/hannbial-fight-scene/

Here *IS* that opening fight scene between Hannibal and Jack Crawford that EVERYONE AND THEY MAMA have been buzzing about online.

(Though pics of the flash forward for the season 2 premiere have been teased for weeks.)

I will say this: I *MISS* hand to hand combat on tv shows. Like, messy, real ass, hand to hand combat. THE AMERICANS, BANSHEE, ARROW and of all shows, COVERT AFFAIRS and NIKITA do it. Not enough shows GET IT IN like that.

And I mean, not obvious jump cuts, fade outs that clearly show where the actor starts and the stuntman ends (SUPERNATURAL, NCIS, etc. are the main offenders for this)....but real ass, I'ma fuck you up and i'm going to lay these hands, knees, feet, forehead, kitchen appliances etc. ON YOUR ASS AND KILL YOU type battles....

I AM GEEKED FOR FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS LMAO

....human made eye was fucking insane!!!

Glad to see Tommy Donnelly back on an NBC show. Sure, all he did was drop off a tray to will, but I see big things a comin'! (Right? They wouldn't have cast a recognizable face in that role if he wasn't gonna get to play somewhere down the line)

This show's amazing. I almost forgot how lush the visuals were. So glad it's back on.

One of my major pet peeves. I also don't think that showing Crawford knowing that Hannibal is evil helps the story at all (even if we did know that it was coming.)

All in all, I'm nervous that most of this season focuses on Will when Hannibal is the better character and the guy I'm more interested in. I'd rather see Hannibal dealing with Will in his head than Will self-inceptioning himself to remember what happened.

The show still looks amazing and there are some great lines of dialogue but I might just wait to binge watch this since I just don't find it as good on a week-to-week basis.

I was having sympathy pain the whole time he was tearing his flesh.

Wheels are definitely moving. I love now that Will is clear of the encephalitis and knows Lecter framed him that he can see Hannibal's footprints in all that he does.

Yet another show that kills me with the week to week wait. I wish all TV was released on demand so I could binge watch. heh

The more playful "I love your work" Hannibal is a nice change from what I thought was a far to cold and distant Hannibal from season 1.

It'll be interesting to see if NBC gives it a third season since the ratings are lousy but the network could use a critical darling, even if it doesn't pull ratings. Sadly, I doubt it and assume that this will be the last season but given their track record, I kind of wish NBC would make the smart move and announce right now that there will be a third and final season. I think they could get more people to tune in if they know there's an end date for it or, at the very least, rebuild some of the good will they have lost over the years.

Final Season? Bryan Fuller already said Season 3 would basically be Red Dragon and he's completely on board with doing a take on Silence of the Lambs (but obviously can't since MGM has the rights and won't work with Gaumont TV or NBC with letting Fuller and his team use what they want to do it, etc.) So there's potential for this show to keep going...

so even if NBC cancels it, Netflix, Amazon Prime and a few other outlets have already said they'd pick it up in a heartbeat.

How the CBS shows are WAY easily digestible.

The thing that blows me away though, is that the visuals on this show are stunning. Like absolutely show stopping, yet people still over look it. The tableaus are incredible and the story is really great.

This is the sort of shit that makes me realize that people are stupid. When you listen to Fuller talk about this jount you realize he's doing this on a shoe string budget. Homie is really creating some work.

Not sure why it's so crazy to think that on a Friday night, people will find something better to do than watch a slow, gory show about a guy who puts himself in the shoes of a serial killer.

I mean, Hannibal lost to 20/20 so to say Americans are too stupid seems off since they're watching an actual news show over this.

Hannibal is a slow, moody genre show on an unpopular network. And personally, I'm starting to think it's overrated because I haven't been all that wowed by the first two episodes.

to the assumption that people are stupid because they dont watch.

The show is on the shittiest network standing right now, NBC

NBC doesn't really promote the show at all

even if it's well written and critically acclaimed, people aren't watching.

and it's on Friday. if it's not BLUEBLOODS, wrestling or a news program, no one is watching.

that's the reality.

the show isn't overrated at all, i disagree with SoulHonky on that one. clearly, he just doesn't like the show because the first two episodes were very good.

but everything else he says, it's true.

NBC giving sole exclusive rights to Amazon. Hannibal should have been made available on as many Streaming Services as possible. Especially being that it was a new show trying to grow an audience. Season 1 should have been on Netflix last year, the show would have been better served that way.

But NBC is run by shortsighted idiots. ::sigh::

No, NBC should have given rights to Netflix, Hulu *AND* Amazon Prime. Shit, folk need to subscribe to HULU because according to Fuller, people who watch the show on HULU COUNTS towards the ratings, etc.

But, NBC continues to fuck up in that regard.

I bet Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and a host of other outlets come SNIFFING for this show if it's canceled at the end of this season.

- That is what I was saying! Why did they sign exclusive rights with Amazon? Limiting the show's exposure. Should have been made available to all services.

Shit, folk need to subscribe to HULU because according
>to Fuller, people who watch the show on HULU COUNTS towards

- I have Hulu+, but I usually watch the show via On Demand. This show is one that warrants re-watching of episodes, so I'll start watching through Hulu. Every little bit counts, right?

>But, NBC continues to fuck up in that regard.
- Straight fucking nincompoops running that network.

>I bet Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and a host of other outlets

- Might it be too costly for Netflix or Hulu? My hope is for FX, each season is only 13 episodes, fits their format perfect I think.

Hannibal thought the new murders followed by his testimony would clear Will, and then he killed the judge because his plan didn't work? Or he purposely knew going in that killing by gunshot and imitating the previous murders would be though of as a separate murderer and he did it just to mess with everyone ?

...going through the floor seemed to be a sign that she was done. No way she shoots that erratically unless Hannibal got the upper hand on her.

Best episode of the season even if it did hit my minor pet peeve of the off-topic comment being the key to solving the case. Still, great episode, best of the season.

She's not. Fuller in his AV Club episode recap (which everyone should read. It's amazing. Like almost an instant commentary track) just flat was like "she's dead."

those weekly commentaries ARE GREAT. Folk miss out on some great information about the episode and obviously, on just how much Fuller LOVES writing the show and all that.

yea he said she's dead *AND* explained the manner in which her body is found (think *dissection* good lord...)

I know, right? I had this slim hope we'd see in the opening credits of Episode 5, Bev and Hannibal trading a few blows before she got away and how that could have been an odd dynamic with what she did (illegally search Hannibal's home) and what she saw (most definitely someone's body or BODIES in the dungeon)....

but, nope, Bev is a goner. Which outstandingly smacks against the Hannibal Lecter canon and that's what makes it so great...

but she's most definitely gone...and brace yourself for what happens in the opening moments of episode five. Fuller has been teasing on twitter for WEEKS that this is one of the, if the most difficult episode of the series to WATCH....

- To me, he has usurped Anthony Hopkins as the best Hannibal. I love the way he portrays the character, cold, calculating, and detached. He conveys so much with nuanced body movements (subtle facial expressions and such). I'm inspired to seek out and watch all his films.

People *SLEEP* on Amanda Plummer's brilliance....she plays these unique character parts so well...

she was great in Friday's episode.

I know it won't happen, but Gina Torres needs a guest emmy nomination for her work as Bella Friday night. Seriously, she does.

59. "SPOILER ALERT/But outstanding read nonetheless:"
In response to Reply # 0

Hettienne Park (Bev Katz on Hannibal) responds to the fans anger over her character's brutal death and the racism and sexism charges the fandom lobbied at Bryan Fuller this week. It's brilliant on so many levels:

http://yellowbird66.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/racism-sexism-and-hannibal-eat-the-rude/

I’m an American actress and I play Beverly Katz on NBC’s HANNIBAL created by Bryan Fuller. (Spoiler Alert coming right now!!!) And she dies in episode 4 of Season 2. That episode got a lot of positive reviews, but it also incited an on-line storm of vitriol directed to Fuller himself for killing off Katz, or more specifically, for being racist and sexist. I caught wind of this myself via Twitter from our beloved Fannibals. And I thought maybe it’d be productive to talk about rather than ignore it.

Fuller cast me in a role that I didn’t think I had a chance in hell of getting. I rarely if ever see minorities, women, minority women, let alone Asian women, get to play characters like Beverly Katz. I rarely if ever see characters like Beverly Katz period. And her last name is Katz for Christ’s sake. Pretty open-minded, non-racist, pro-feminine writing and casting in my opinion.
As far as “fridging” (killing her off for the sake of advancing the plot or creating “manpain”)… HANNIBAL is based on the Thomas Harris novels and it centers on the relationship between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham – two dudes, so that’s where the focus will be and will likely remain. (My guess is that now that their relationship has been well established, there will be opportunity to further develop female characters. One can hope.)
With good writing, every event happens in order to advance the plot and raise the stakes for the characters in the story, so I’m not sure how any character getting killed off is a bad or avoidable thing, especially on a show about a guy who eats people.
Yes, Fuller could’ve kept me on for longer and if he had, my character would’ve probably remained in the background processing crime scenes regurgitating technical exposition. Instead – albeit not for very long – he wrote enough for Katz to make people get to know her a little better, actually identify with her, and like her enough to care when she gets killed. If people can identify with this character regardless of the color of her skin, or like her regardless of her sex without her having to play the qualities we usually see chicks play, then that’s a good thing in my opinion. If you are upset about not believing Katz would be so careless, I agree, though part of the fun of the show is its homage to the horror genre. And finding the writing unrealistic may not be enough damning evidence of racism or sexism.
And let’s take Bella Crawford. She’s a great presence in the story as Jack’s wife despite being a peripheral character, played beautifully and poignantly with great strength by Gina Torres in some of the most moving scenes of the series. Her storyline and possible demise ain’t cheap either. (And she landed a nice solid slap to Hannibal’s mug.)

In addition, what you may not know is that, though Fuller is the creator/writer, supremely respected and highly regarded, there are many other cooks in this kitchen, AKA the producers. Even though Bryan crafted Katz’s death from the get-go for the sake of storytelling – not to gleefully off a minority female – he wanted me to stay on for longer. I wanted to stay on for longer. But we’re not the only ones who have a say about that. And with the other actresses on the show who have left or may be leaving soon, they have other commitments to other projects, so scheduling and availability are other major factors. And don’t forget about the constraints of Father Time and the Almighty Budget. (You’d be shocked to know how amazing this show looks for how little money they put into it.)

Believe me, I would’ve preferred having Katz go down with a fight, but when I brought it up, I was told there was concern around showing Hannibal beating up a woman. I can see why they would be concerned. They were being sensitive not to overdo the violence against women in a story that inherently deals with violence. On the other hand, I also felt like that was sort of akin to relegating a female cop to a desk job rather than sending her out into the field. Isn’t that sort of perpetuating the notion that women are the weaker sex? So I suggested to a couple producers that they mitigate their concerns by having Katz get a good solid shot at him before dying, maybe a kick in the balls or wounding him somehow. But then that poses more issues and problems with maintaining integrity and making sure Hannibal doesn’t get caught too soon, which of course can’t happen, otherwise there’s no show. To be fair, I don’t believe they didn’t listen to me because I’m an Asian or a female. I think they didn’t listen to me because I’m an actor.

Having said all that, I don’t for one second discount or dismiss people’s upset or frustration. There’s a lot of pain out there. First of all, dealing with death, particularly of someone you know (or feel like you know in this instance), is difficult. That’s why we love great TV shows and film and theater and art. We can actually feel our emotions, laugh, cry, and feel connected to one another, right? Secondly, dealing with racism or sexism sucks. I’ve come face-to-face with my fair share of racism AND sexism, especially in this industry. It’s disgusting. It’s humiliating, infuriating, deeply disappointing, and it fucking hurts. When you feel marginalized by the world at large, there’s great comfort and empowerment in seeing someone you can identify with on the screen who isn’t subject to clichés or stereotypes. When that gets taken away, you can feel like you’ve been fucked over once again. And unless you’ve ever been hurt merely due to the color of your skin, what’s between your legs, or who sleeps next to you at night, you probably don’t understand that kind of pain. And anger is usually our first defense against pain. And these are things you can’t physically touch or pin down or throw away or kick the shit out of, arrest and put in jail, so when any form of it might be tangible – like the white, male writer/creator of HANNIBAL – he will become the unfortunate punching bag for a lot of people’s pain.

And if you are one of those people doing the punching, I ask you to consider this: What if he’s on our side? Don’t forget this is network television, not cable. In order to sell those advertising dollars and survive, they want to appeal to the masses of Middle America. Fuller didn’t have to have any women on the show. He didn’t have to have any strong women on the show. He didn’t have to have any diversity on the show. And HANNIBAL is trying to change the antiquated model of television programming, and they’re doing it. Yes, prominent women and diversity should be a bare minimum for all shows, I agree. But one person can’t change the entire industry or the establishment overnight. Certainly there are plenty of white male writers who may have their own agendas, or may not even realize the frame through which they view the world is biased. But I wouldn’t underestimate Bryan Fuller. His entire body of work alone shows that he’s far from ignorant. And I understand some people were upset with his AV Club interview regarding that episode, but don’t mistake his passion for the creative process of writing fiction with any lack of compassion he has in real life.

Now I’m definitely not suggesting any of these issues get dismissed or that anyone should be silenced, or even that Fuller isn’t secretly the most intelligent psychopath of all. I actually don’t really know. But no one of us can change the world or the industry and eradicate racism, sexism, or homophobia alone. And while I don’t think anyone honestly believes a TV show bears the burden of social justice, I do think audiences appreciate seeing a realistic representation of the population. And it is becoming more and more obvious that it’s economically viable and necessary to do so. It’s vitally important to speak your truth, voice your opinions, express your concerns and upset, and more importantly support and praise the things you like and love. And the people who are the decision makers – the network, producers, writers – they will be forced to listen. And if you’re loud enough, they will hear you, and things will change. Though it’s always more effective to do so without getting nasty or disrespectful about it because that only pushes people further away. I’m not sure the people who are directing their anger at Fuller or HANNIBAL aren’t really angry at the old-fashioned ideas cultivated by our society about women and people of color. Let’s talk about it with civility and dignity. I don’t see how attacking anyone to the point where nobody wants to listen to any possibly valid points you’re making is going to lead to any solutions. And at least for me, I just end up feeling even worse.

I’d rather focus on the positive stuff. I got to play this amazing woman who didn’t have to sleep with anyone (not that I would have minded) or act dumb and girlie or fawn all over some guy or be a conniving bitch to get people to notice or respect me, and she didn’t speak broken English or karate chop anyone (not that I would have minded). Nobody called her “dragon lady” or “exotic.” She could shoot a gun and drive that FBI SUV like a champ. And all with the extra added bonus of being Jewish. And when I get messages and thank yous from viewers who dig that or are inspired by that, well, that’s what makes any of this worthwhile or mean anything to me. So thank you for that. I love Beverly Katz. And I loved playing her.

I tend to be forgiving of human imperfection as well as give people the benefit of the doubt. I believe in Bryan Fuller. I believe he’s on our side. And I think it’s pretty awesome that the people who watch HANNIBAL are invested and passionate and intelligent enough to bring these issues to light and make some noise. Maybe this was his design all along. You never know.
PS…I don’t wish to become the target of the vitriol, but I’m probably more guilty of racism and sexism than HANNIBAL or Bryan Fuller. I admit I unabashedly tried to point my ass towards the camera every chance I could get, and I begged them to turn me into an eggroll. Neither attempts were successful.

how he was hyping up episode 5, I was a little let down by the episode...They introduce the hospital orderly as a notorious serial killer who wanted to help Will and then had him shot/caught within a span of like 30 minutes, it felt a little ridiculous to me

the previews of Jack collecting food from Hannibal's dinner party and giving it to the lab to best tested, I can't wait for that

RIGHT?! Now we finally get to see how this leads to the battle between Jack and Hannibal at the beginning of the season, or, what will be episode 13....

and Hannibal posted a nearly 23% rise in ratings (for them, 3.6 million viewers was the second highest rating for the show save for the very first show which got them 4 million + viewers last year).

that's better than nothing...

- Mostly due to the 2 hour Dateline lead in. But I'm hoping the show can stay around 0.9-1.0 demo share for the remainder of the season.

- Round 3 ends on April 2nd. But it does look like it will win. But it's going up against GoT in the final round, so ultimately it'll lose in the end. Well we can hope the Fannibals can pull off a miracle, would be a good win, might gain the show some fans.

I know right?!

Apparently, Mads is clumsy as fuck/isn't a gourmet cook etc.

but the food stylist and chef consultants show him how to chop certain things that he does in the episode, he'll practice for maybe 10-15 minutes beforehand.

Yet when they scream ACTION, dude looks like a damn PRO cooking.

It's crazy but THAT gif? Man, I'd be a fucking BAWSE if I could do that! LOL

WIth Justified proving that it should be about time to put it out to pasture, Hannibal has definitely moved up near the top of my favorite shows on TV right now. It's a tough call because there isn't much enjoyment in watching it because it is gruesome and frustrating to see Hannibal play everyone like a fiddle (or harpsichord) but this show is top notch.

I also prefer these shows when it moves away from Will's empathy superpower and focuses more on the cat and mouse game.

But it looks like Hannibal already has it on lock.

I still think the best shows on TV are Game of Thrones and The Good Wife but Hannibal has taken over the third slot.

HAHAHAHAHAHA Right?!

I was like wait, wasn't this motherfucker disemboweled last season? he's using a cane to walk yet he's able to FREELY sprint through the snow like it's nothing?

and Clearly he didn't get it right getting his LoLo on...motherfucker FELL in the snow! Oh wait, then he *DID* get his LoLo on...cause all she *DO* is choke and fall! BOOM! LMAO

But another great episode...Anna Chlumsky (sp?) killed it as Clarice Starling, ahem, Miriam Lass (cause Fuller has said Miriam *IS* a Clarice of sorts since he can't touch the Silence of the Lambs and she was a call out to Starling and that universe)....

But damn, I need Fuller to give Caroline Dhavernas *MORE* to do as Dr. Alana Bloom. Like, it's almost like they don't know what to do with her, other than just keep her around until the end of the season....

>But another great episode...
- This episode seemed to have made a lot of people angry (esp. imdb users). People are complaining about plotholes and how they are making Hannibal out to be some kind of Super Villain. But isn't Hannibal suppose to be the "Devil"..."Smoke"? At least that's what Bryan and co keeping stating. Then for me, his Machiavellian antics are believable.

- I'm waiting for them to make her character more useful as well. Her character is the weak link of the series.

Dude would make a mint running a clean, quiet moving company.

This was kind of a weaker episode but I'm hoping it was just a blip as they tied up the first half of the season. I still hate that they flash forwarded to Jack and Hannibal's face-off although, as good as Fish has been, his faith in Will hasn't been handled that great.

Still, it was another good episode.

The show really hit its stride but I feel like they should just let us in on what I assume is the secret that Will and Jack are working together and this stuff isn't happening. I don't feel like it's going to work as a twist.
Right now, Will's turn is IMO completely unbelievable and it's so odd that I'm not sure how Hannibal, whose always been a step ahead, isn't seeing through it.

if it isn't her, which it probably isn't, it was a pretty risky move to feed hannibal meat that isn't her and assume he won't know. like, if he's feeding her Randall, Will is assuming Hannibal can't tell the difference between male and female meat

like, at all. What Mason does to her is vile. And, the fact that Hannibal is behind the machinations of fucking with ALL OF THEM is astoundingly genius.

But, part of me would love for Margot to fuck Mason up just once, if only we get to see Katherine Isabelle whoop somebody's ass...but that's not how their relationship unfolds in the books.

Freddie ain't dead and GOD DAMN Alana Bloom is SO fucking clueless. Girl, YOU ARE FUCKING A CANNIBAL WHO HAS BEEN GANKING FOLKS LEFT AND RIGHT! THE DICK CAN'T BE THAT GOOD FOR YOU TO NOT CONNECT THE DOTS! THAT'S WHY YO ASS GON CATCH A KNIFE IN THE GUT AND END UP AS HANNIBAL'S DINNER COURSE SERVED UP WITH A SAUTEED FAVA BEANS AND FENNEL HASH!!!!

SMH LMAO but i'm glad they *FINALLY* gave Dhavernas more to do...

but, i still wonder what the end game is with Alana Bloom. Will she make it to season 3 (in the flash forward promos, we see her pulling her gun on Hannibal as he walked toward her, etc.)

but great episode and all that.

Friday's episode was outstanding.

The season finale is going to be epic.

the promo: someone flying out of a window (why do I think Hannibal through Alana out the window and shit), Alana packing heat and looking like she's going to shoot Hannibal...or not.

Jack and Hannibal prepping Will for the "final battle".

EPIC! EPIC! EPIC!

GAT DAMN, Bryan Fuller, Martha DeLaurentis (sp), Gaumont TV, David Slade, episode 13 co-writer Steven Lightfoot, the entire cast and crew WENT ALL THE WAY OFF LAST NIGHT!!!

We had an idea of how it was going to end, but THAT SHIT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!

Okay, like, how is it that GINA "THE GODDESS" TORRES as Bella Crawford is on her death bed STILL LOOKED FLAWLESS AS HELL?

Kade Purcell came back and WENT IN

Hold up? They brought back ____________________ only to be murdered minutes later?

Did he really throw ________________________ out a motherfucking window Blade 1/Karen Jensen style like she was basically a limp ass rag doll?!

And Fuller said we won't know WHO survived that maximum cannibal slayage carnage until SEASON 3, EPISODE 2?! THAT'S NOT UNTIL WINTER/SPRING 2015?!

And that post credits, Marvel Universe tease?! ________________ is sitting next to Hannibal on the plane?

SAY WHAT NIGGA?!

A++++++++++

YES, this got to be one of the best, if not, THE BEST non-cable show on TV. Hell, this competes with the top, water cooler cable shows and MORE than holds its own.

AMAZING!!!!

...dang....

next season should/could be rather interesting....

'sSPOILER' ...SPOILER....SPOILER....SPOILER
H wide open and free abroad? (and with Scully at that?)
they could probably do a whole season of that if they wanted to...

for the record. while the plot and storylines are pretty well done (though pushing the limits of plausibility sometimes), the thing that makes the show extra special (to me) is the artistic presentation and choices they make on HOW they tell the stories...the metaphoric dream sequences, the interesting angle & perspective choices, the sonics and music....to me, THOSE elements, along with the GREAT acting/performances, are what make the show 'next level'...(same goes with my other favorite show from last year 'True Detective'...iin that one, as good as the story was, it was the Characters (GREAT ACTING) and MOOD/WORLD that was created that just pulled me WAYYYYYYY the hell in....

well done on both counts.....

have you listened to
her stuff?

I want to stab him.

http://variety.com/2014/tv/columns/hannibal-season-finale-proves-series-should-have-skipped-third-course-1201190586/

‘Hannibal’ Season Finale Proves Series Should Have Skipped Third Course (SPOILERS)

Give showrunner Bryan Fuller and company credit for getting this much mileage out of NBC’s “Hannibal” prequel, which — given its relationship with the movies — seemed like a high-wire act from the get-go. Yet watching the second-season finale the prevailing sense was that their contortions to prolong the series have simply made all the principal players look inept, setting up more cat-and-mouse games that have already fairly well exhausted their welcome.

NBC renewed the series for a third season, largely due to the favorable license fee thanks to all of the international deals secured by Gaumont Intl. Still, if ever a concept cried out for the “limited series” label that in theory has become so popular these days, this was surely it.

Instead (and SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t watched), the finale settled for a close that left most of the characters sitting around choking on their own blood. Even the usually reliable Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) must be off his game, since if those novels still have any validity, at least two of his would-be victims don’t wind up dead.

Frankly, the season’s framing device — opening with a brutal fight between the FBI’s Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) and connoisseur/psychopath Hannibal — almost overwhelmed the show. Sure, there were arresting images, food pornography and creative mutilations throughout, but given what had been telegraphed as coming and the tension-filled build-up, it at times felt like the writers were simply killing time (and a whole lot else, admittedly) while waiting to get to the main course.

Based on the finale, presumably, the next season shifts to a search for Hannibal. But that’s a less interesting concept than where the series began — with evil incarnate essentially hiding in plain sight — and strictly in practical terms, there’s the little matter of Fishburne having already taken a role in the ABC sitcom “Black-ish.”

Mikkelsen has certainly put his own imprint on the Lecter character, but Hugh Dancy’s manhunter Will Graham has gone through extended paces that became increasingly strained. And while there were opportunities to further flesh out the mythology – including Michael Pitt’s hair-raising (literally) turn as the young Mason Verger, leading to the point where Hannibal drugged him and talked him into peeling away most of his own face — as “Bates Motel” has discovered, spinning those plates for too long is a delicate proposition.

All told, “Hannibal” remains a marketable title largely because of the rightful admiration harbored for the Oscar-winning “Silence of the Lambs.” Unfortunately, the franchise has been greedily muddled by continuing to mine the material, including the bad theatrical sequel of the same name as the series, based on Thomas Harris’ even worse book.

So while NBC and Gaumont obviously had pragmatic financial reasons to keep “Hannibal” alive, creatively speaking, pick your metaphor: A) The writers have bitten off more than they could chew; or B) stick a fork in it, it’s done.

Sounds like he couldn't separate his love for "SOTL" and this television adaptation because this season went hard! From what I can tell Fuller was pretty faithful to the basic plot points of the novels right?

Bryan Fuller is that dude! I give no fucks whatsoever about saying that shit..lol!

Beyond that, I'm thoroughly confused by this write-up. I mean, they already killed a character from Silence of the Lambs so anyone is fair game and I'm not sure why the "validity" of the books is that important. It's not a bad thing if they stray from them, especially if it ups the stakes. (And I'm not sure why he doesn't see Fishburne signing on to a different show as a potential spoiler for how his character ends up.)

Also, he acknowledges that "spinning those plates for too long is a delicate proposition", so why would he be upset that they are switching gears and hunting Dr. Lecter for a season?

And I don't know how you can write anything about Hannibal and not at least give a nod to the fact that it's one of the best looking series on TV (and I think you could argue it's one of the best shot shows ever.)

I think he should have fleshed out more of his ideas on what he didn't like about season 2 rather than just assuming they are fact and bemoaning the third season.

How do we know he doesn't get caught in the next few episodes? How do we know the first few episodes don't focus on the fallout/recovery of Jack/Will/Alana? Introduce new characters (Pretty sure I read Fuller did say Francis Dolarhyde and another killer would be introduced)? New FBI agents to step in and investigate what actually happened at Hannibal's house? The potential returns of Chilton, the guy who tried to kill Hannibal? Freddie Lounds? How do we know we won't spend episodes seeing whatever Hannibal and Du Maurier end up doing/going? What if he gets in contact with Will and Will actually DOESN'T try to find him?

I can't imagine them doing a season long predictable "hunt for Hannibal" that feels like a procedural drama...there are a million places for it to go, and to say Hannibal is "over with" creatively is absurd.

In response to Reply # 125

I think one of the key mistakes is thinking "On the run" means "procedural". It just means you have Hannibal Lecter out loose in the world which basically opens up the storytelling to go anywhere.

"Season three is going to be a lot of fun because it’s going to be taking a lot of disparate elements from the novel ‘Hannibal Rising’ and the novel ‘Hannibal’ and mashing them up together as part of the thrust of the season. It’s going to be fun to bastardize two novels into one sort of Frankenstein season."

"My hope is that not only do we have a completely different Hannibal Lecter story in season three, but we will meet some of those great characters like Francis Dolarhyde and Lady Murasaki and weave them into the world in a unique way."

Having Hannibal on the loose opens up a world of options. Even if Will is chasing him, he is just another vehicle to take us through Hannibal's backstory.

129. "EMMY TIME: Bryan Fuller's thoughts on Season 3"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm glad Hannibal is finally in the Emmy conversation. Granted, it's got a slim chance of getting nominated, but yes, this show should be in the Emmy convo. AND Fuller is seriously looking forward to telling the Francis Dolarhyde/Red Dragon story is fantastic!

http://www.deadline.com/2014/05/hannibal-emmys-2014-screening-series-awardsline/

The ‘Fannibals’, as well as TV Academy members, came out en-masse Wednesday night to Awardsline’s screening of Gaumont International Television‘s Hannibal. While the crowd was armed with fan-made comic books, pictures and gifts for creator/showrunner Bryan Fuller, Hugh Dancy (Will Graham), Caroline Dhavernas (Dr. Alana Bloom) and executive producer Martha De Laurentiis; panel moderator, Deadline’s Dominic Patten, also took the opportunity to geek out by donning Hannibal’s plastic chopping garb.

With Hannibal leaving Will and Alana fatally wounded in the season 2 finale, which screened yesterday, Fuller exclaimed that “There is going to be a painful delay (in season 3) and you won’t find out in the first episode who survives. The first episode focuses on Dr. Bedelia du Maurier (Hannibal’s therapist played by Gillian Anderson).” As far as who survives, “It’s more like episode 2 or 3,” said Fuller.

While the show has been both a success in both its live (season 2 finale was up 19% from its season 1 ender) and extended DVR viewing, what elates Fuller the most is “sharing with those people who watch us live and tweet with us.” The immense amount of social media has spurred myriad facets of fandom, one of which is “The Hannigram”, which Fuller defined as drawings that are the “Homoeroticism of Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham”.

Deconstructing his writing process for the Gothic cinematic series, Fuller said, “We broke season two down into two chapters, so that we could ultimately tell the psychological tale of ‘The Murder Husbands’ — Will and Hannibal — by the end. So, the first part was heavily plot driven with Beverly dying, Gideon dying and Chilton getting shot in the face. It was about setting up these tentpoles, and then capturing the reality of where those things go. (This would lead to moments) where we’d be in the writers room and someone would pitch a good idea like ‘bees in someone’s head’ or ‘Let’s kill Chilton!’” Fuller then quipped to his fellow writer and executive producer at the screening, “That was Steve Lightfoot’s idea. If someone dies on the show, it’s because of Steve.”

As far as what Fuller would like to see unfold on Hannibal, he exclaimed, “I can’t wait to dig my claws into the character of Francis Dolarhyde and his visions of the Red Dragon!” Dolarhyde aka “The Tooth Fairy” was the serial killer in the Thomas Harris novel who killed off entire families (he was played by Ralph Fiennes in the 2002 Brett Ratner film). Hugh Dancy, who earlier that morning was nominated for a TV Critics’ Choice Award for best actor, drama concurred, “The material with Dolarhyde and the blind lady – we’ll have to approach that in an interesting way.”

The Awardsline Emmy Screening Series runs until mid-June at the Landmark Theatre at 10850 W. Pico Blvd in Los Angeles. Upcoming screenings and talent Q&As moderated by Deadline’s Dominic Patten include The Americans (June 2), Mad Men (June 3rd), The Mindy Project (June 5th) and Devious Maids (June 16). Hugh Dancy, who earlier that morning was nominated for a TV Critics’ Choice Award for best actor, drama concurred, “The material with Dolarhyde and the blind lady – we’ll have to approach that in an interesting way.”

If not, what would you put above it?

I'm doing a rewatch since it's on Netflix and in the middle of Season 1 now, but I remember Season 2 being so insane that I put it above True Detective Season, Haunting of Hill House Season 1, and Channel Zero Season 2 (personal favorite).

i remember LOVING the 1st 2 seasons of Hannibal. I'll have to rewatch again though, cuz True Detective season 1 was really tough to beat for me. (i also really loved Hill House too, but True Detective 1 & the early Hannibal were a tad above. I havent seen the 'Channel Zero' thing you mentioned though, will have to look into it)
