"Almost Human Season 1"

Anybody else going to watch. This is one show I'd been looking forward to. It's from the team that did "Fringe", which was very good the first four seasons. So I have high hopes for it.

i was hoping for something reminiscent of dredd, blade runner, and robocop, and it delivered. i'll be watching. i was a big fringe fan so i tend to give followup series from the same creators a chance. i also like karl urban.

Your first 'Almost Human' crazy theory: Karl Urban is actually a robot
By Jeff Jensen on Nov 17, 2013 at 9:00PM

Karl Urban is a not a human being. Not in the technical sense of the term. Oh, sure, he might look human. He might walk and talk like a human. He might even like to think he’s human. But Karl Urban would be wrong! For Karl Urban is actually an extraordinary machine that has been programmed to think he is Karl Urban. Karl Urban does not know this, though sooner or later, he will, and when he does, Karl Urban will be very sad. Poor Karl Urban!

No, we speak not of the real-world Karl Urban, star of Star Trek and Dredd, but the character that this fine actor plays on the new sci-fi buddy cop drama Almost Human, which premiered Sunday night on Fox. Urban is John Kennex, a police officer in the near-future where human cops work side by side with robot cops. The pilot episode gives John a new partner, a humanoid android with buggy emotional components named Dorian, played by Michael Ealy. I am convinced that one of the big twists of this new series from J.J. Abrams and Fringe mastermind J.H. Wyman — both of whom are fond of big twists — is that John Kennex will mysteriously get younger as the saga progresses, while Dorian mysteriously, rapidly ages and corrodes. Okay, that was a joke. A literary joke! No, my very serious theory is that John Kennex ain’t a human being at all. He’s a robot, too! Or something very close to it. The pilot establishes that he has a bionic leg to replace the one that got blown off during a firefight with bad guys known as The Syndicate. But I assert that the rest of him is made of fabricated from sci-fi hoo-ha, too. Why do I believe in such a thing? Clues, man! Clues! Come, theorize with me.

The Blade Runner Connection. Almost Human — a story set in dystopian 2048, about a crusty-haunted cop who resents robots yet develops a bromantic relationship with one — is conspicuous with similarities to Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic set in dystopian 2019 , about a crusty-haunted ex-cop named Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) who hunts renegade bioengineered beings, or Replicants, and falls in love with one. First, Urban could pass for Ford, don’t you think? (Squint. See?) Second, Blade Runner and the pilot episode of Almost Human have scenes set in downtown noodle joints. They also have scenes set in black-market medical clinics. (Blade Runner: The scene with Chew, the dude who makes eyeballs. Almost Human: The scene with John visiting a “Recollectionist.”) In Blade Runner, Deckard was hunting Replicants who had worked in space. In Almost Human, Dorian was assigned to work on a space station before being re-assigned to be John’s partner. Why is the Blade Runner connection relevant to my theory that John Kennex is a robot? Because of the popular, controversial theory that Ford’s Blade Runner character was himself a Replicant, but didn’t know it. Ergo: Kennex is something like a Replicant himself. After all…

“Kennex” = K’NEX. And K’NEX is a brand of construction toys, like sophisticated Tinker Toys. What this means, clearly, is that John himself is a K’Nex-like construction, which is to say, a thing assembled from synthetic, component stuff.
“Synthetic Calibration Incomplete” “Synthetic Fail — Calibration Required” Throughout the premiere episode, John has problems with his bionic leg, and it keeps bleating those aforementioned FAIL alerts. What the show wants you to think is that John’s artificial shank isn’t properly meshing with his joints and junk. But the show is pulling your leg, so to speak. This is misdirection — for us, and for John. A mechanical leg that keeps reminding you that you have a mechanical leg has the psychological effect of reinforcing the idea that the rest of you is perfectly human. And so the limb, and its alleged malfunction, is a mind game, intended to prevent John from realizing that he is wholly synthetic. My guess is that the rest of John is built from chips and and wires and silicon, artfully designed to resemble flesh and bone, blood and guts; or that he;s been developed from “programmable DNA,” another idea that gets talked about a lot in the pilot. It allows you the ability to genetically engineer custom-made people. Hence, John is a synthetic copy of his old human self — a super-fancy life-like robo-android thingy.

“The Recollectionist” isn’t who he says he is. John is secretly getting treatment from a doctor at a black-market medical clinic. John lost a lot of memory when the Syndicate almost blew him up two years ago, and the underground M.D. is helping John remember what he has forgotten. Or so he thinks. I submit that this so-called “Recollectionist” is working for the people who put our Humpty-Dumpty hero back together again. He’s programming John with memories collected from his old brain. He might be feeding him doctored versions of those memories, too. You know how John is now remembering that his ex-girlfriend was working with the bad guys? Nope. That’s what Ersatz John’s maker want him to think. Probably to keep him motivated to keep chasing after the Syndicate. Who’s Franken-John’s Doc Frankenstein? My money is on John’s boss, Captain Maldonado, played by Lili Taylor. You get the sense that the department is lousy with dirty cops. John, then, represents the Captain’s solution to the problem: She recruited a good cop by recreating the best one she knew.

“’Synthetic.’ There’s that word again.” Throughout the pilot, John insists on calling Dorian a “synthetic.” Dorian doesn’t like it; “synthetic” is a dirty word to him. It reduces him, denigrates him, subverts his sense of himself as unique, authentic living entity. This despite the fact that “synthetic” is, technically speaking, a perfectly appropriate term for Dorian. “’Synthetic.’ There’s that word again,” says Dorian whenever John throws it in his face. It happens enough to be suspicious. It’s almost as if the show itself is calling attention to the word, underscoring it and putting it in bold. Why? Some might say that the producers want us to view Almost Human as an allegory for Otherness and bigotry, although I find this reading problematic if not offensive. (Another essay, another time.) I say the producers are hammering “synthetic” into our brains to set up the ironic revelation of the series: That John himself is synthetic.

John Kennex = Dorian. The marketing for Almost Human has consisted of imagery that shows John partially or completely superimposed on Dorian and vise versa. This is very clever symbolism. It suggests a meaningful equivalency. John is “almost human” in that he is trying to recover his humanity after having life figuratively blown up and his body nearly and literally blown to smithereens. Dorian is “almost human” because he’s the most life-like android ever built, with emotions and flaws and stuff. Together, they represent humanity’s increasing reliance and enmeshment with technology, which may ultimately lead to a future in which sentient machines are indistinguishable from human beings. But I would argue that this imagery is a clue to Kennex’s true nature. Moreover, the pilot episode is full of lines that push this notion that John and Dorian have more in common than John would like to admit. Says one jerk police officer, about John and Dorian: “That’s perfect. Two cops from the scrap heap.” Captain Maldonado, to John, about Dorian: “Because he’s special. Just like you.” Dorian to John: “If I were like you, I wouldn’t know myself, either.” Bottom line: Kennex is just like Dorian . They’re both “almost human” … BECAUSE THEY’RE BOTH TOTALLY ROBOTS.

Looking forward to seeing where Almost Human — one of the season’s most promising new series — goes from here, regardless of the rightness or wrongness of my theory. What did you think of the premiere? Will you be watching next week? Please share your thoughts — and theories! — in the message board below.

Human brain in a synthetic body OR microchip enabled brain in a mix of human/android body. Cuz there's NO WAY he survived that blast, and the way they're accessing his memories does NOT look natural.

..smart move.

could be a solid show, but it would help if they weren't so heavy-handed with the audience. allow the plot to unfold with balance, and trust that your audience will follow.

Ealy must have nailed that audition. I think they're chemistry is going to be key to this show's success. It might even make Ealy the "mainstream" star "Sleeper Cell" failed to do.

as a UK-style miniseries it might have worked, as a standard procedural it didn't cut it and their chemistry was never quite right.

production values, now that i think of it.

like, majorly.

the tech is nice. they saving monies on casting all them generic ass robots. shoot up scenes are hot. guns are badass.

only plot gripe i have is that they said that dude was out for 17 mos.

syndicate ain't get shit jumping off in the meantime?

that's a lot of damn time. whatever plot reason for the long time isn't clear yet. (they needed time to elapse for DRN to be decommissioned, but the newschool bots were already in effect at the time the backstory went down).

I wonder how much of SHIELD's budget is going to execs/Marvel and how much is ending up on the screen. Because it certainly doesn't look like enough of the money is landing in the production value.

They also benefitted from not being forced to have a Case of the Week in this one and could open with the overarching story (has SHIELD even gotten to that yet?) and Marvel is trying to make the Avengers-related movies lighter. Alan Taylor complained that he wanted Thor to be grittier and Marvel/Disney pushed the softer angle (most likely so parents of kids of all ages would feel safer bring their kid to the flick.)

Unfortunately, the Monday ratings were only so-so but I hope Fox gives a second season to their Almost Human/Sleepy Hollow duo.

ealy is the dude in everything he's in. (that buddy cop thing on USA network w/ him and his partner in couples therapy was actually cool to me).

he's done a great job of portraying that outsider's perspective.

and you got to respect him as a robot who will kick yo ass. in the first ep, he came close to saying "i am not programmed to play that shit".

nice twist on organ harvesting stories w/ the sexbots. i wish they ain't shut ole girl down, though.

the m.e. / tech was having a hoard time keeping it business when he was tryna download her files. i might have had to take her to the interrogation room. #justfacts.

It was derivative of "Die Hard", but the action was really good and the banter between Dorian and Kennex was excellent once again. Also, the production values are still impressive. Someone mentioned it earlier, but how does this show look "better" than SHIELD with a smaller budget. Where is that SHIELD money going?

i don't remember her being this terrible on friday night lights, but i tuned out after the 1st season.

still, i'm wondering if its her or poor writing?

*another note: so far, the show's barely 2 dimensional.

sure, they gave us a decent corruption/conspiracy set up with the pilot, but there's almost no auxiliary movement on this series.

She doesn't bring much to the table but the writers haven't seemed to have given her a character yet. I think the woman who plays Felicity Smoak on Arrow helps elevate that character but she also was given more to do, even in the earliest episodes. Ditto Tamala Jones on Castle.
She'll probably have more to do in the later episodes but they've done a lousy job introducing her character and if she wasn't a recognizable face, you'd probably think she was one of the many Law & Order throwaway side character like Profaci, who only came in to bring new evidence.

52. "Episodic gets better ratings still"
In response to Reply # 49

1. The top network shows are currently all episodic.
2. Networks still operate under the assumption that serialized shows either get people right away or get nobody since the audiences won't want to catch up on a serialized show.
3. The post-Lost serialized kick birthed a lot of clunkers.
4. It's easier for Execs to give notes on an episodic show than on a serialized one.
5. Even serialized shows need filler eps with a network 22 episode order. So it might get more serialized as it goes on.

still, the dialogue is clumsy, and the overall writing is awkward.

i smh everytime a law enforcement show is desperate enough to use an inexperienced civilian to catch a criminal. lol @ any criminal who's too smart to be fooled by an undercover cop, but too stupid to recognize a civilian being USED by a cop.

Cop shows always do that tired trope. I'm just saying I don't think there's any relation to dude's inability to spot a civilian with the fact he was tipped off about the first cop. That's all.

RIGHT?! LMAO

I mean, we know niggas SHADE LILI TAYLOR the fuck out for not being attractive, but damn Lili slays what LITTLE she gets each episode.

We expect that because it's Lili and no matter what, Mama gon go IN.

Hell, she, Famke Janssen, Candyse McClure and Dougray Scott were the ONLY reason to even BOTHER to watch an ep or two of Netflix's Hemlock Grove. They all KNEW the show was a joke, treated it like a joke and WENT IN regardless.

Minka: like, she wasn't good on Friday Night Lights, she is horrid on everything else she's done and she brings nada to the table on this show.

Of course, everyone is so focused on how she looks because don't bring shit else to the table.

But they really need to work on their cases and stories. It's getting to the point where I'd rather just watch a sit-com of Urban and Ealy (Brooklyn 2099?) than deal with whatever case they are dealing with.

And I guarantee this paints them in a corner in future eps with shit happening and people wondering, "Um, why doesn't Dorian just use his super strength?" Unless they open next episode with, "Yeah, that was weird. Guess it was because I didn't have a breast plate but it's on now so..."

But holy shit, if I've ever seen a "Shit, we only have two minutes left, how do we wrap this up?" ridiculous ending this year, it's this one. I laughed when he flipped the car and then laughed out loud when it blew up.

the discussion in the beginnig regarding wether Dorain had genitals and what he did with them
was fun/ny

I feel like that's the case every episode. The first ten minutes where they just fuck with each other on the way to a crime is good. Everything after that is weak sauce. This show is looking like it'd be much better off as a great web series.

yup. I started watching more of the eps cause the first two bored me to death and this is the same conclusion i'm coming up with also.

and you are right...they *ARE* flirting with something they want to talk about that you mentioned above (gender roles clearly and notions of sexuality) which is interesting as hell....*BUT* they never go there.

which is annoying.

In response to Reply # 0

if FOX aired the episodes in the correct production order? I think it's clear that everything seems disjointed and they have yet to go back to "They Syndicate" from the first episode. I think I would have a slightly better opinion of the show if I can see the progression of the characters as the writers intended. That said there are problems with the show. They have woefully underdeveloped all the characters besides Dorian and Kennex. The chemistry between the leads is great. But they really need to develop the other three cops and then start to develop the overarching story with The Syndicate.

The only thing FOX airing out of order has an effect on is how much the 2 get along, and since the two leads interacting is the only good thing about the show I don't think it has had any real effect.

As for a season long arc, they'd have to be able to deliver a single interesting episode from front to back before I'd start suggesting that they handle some multiple episode arc.

Fun is the new gritty

..i damn-near cringed when the accused murderer did everything EXCEPT call the captain ugly. and she squirmed like she believed it.

smh

minka kelly SUCKS. you need more than a pretty face on a cop show.

the writing is weak as hell. each ep is paper thin. i don't give a damn how great the chemistry might be during the bromance of ealy & urban, the writing is atrocious.

so far, it hasn't earned renewal.

Again, the show kicks off with a decent start to a sitcom and then becomes unintentionally laughable afterwards.

They need to hire a female writer immediately. That bullshit breakdown of Lili Taylor was excruciating for the wrong reasons. (And the guy saying "You look nice" at the end of pathetic) I don't think Minka has much to offer besides a pretty face but I can't blame her too much so far because I'm not sure what anyone would do with that role. She's either got expository dialogue or has to make bedroom eyes with Karl Urban.

Oh, and nobody batted an eye when the girl lied on the stand that she saw the murder (since earlier she said she didn't see it but that the murdered girl did.)

So far it's been demoted to Show I Have On While I Do Chores/Other Things and I could see it being dropped completely. Especially if they continue to get out of every tough spot with "Oh, well luckily THIS technology has been invented to help us."

Forward thinking show (essence of repo men?)
More on their chemistry...with additional
Even more on early character and how he's dealing with his situation

92. "we LOVE this show...."
In response to Reply # 0

we DVRed it until we had a chance to watch, (so i've intentionally avoided reading this thread) but now that we've caught up i have to say that this is probably my favorite 'active' show on TV now...

...the writing, the cast, the concept & environment...it's very very well done.

the writing is 'tight' where it needs to be and 'loose' where it needs to be...you get genuine legitimate believable tension right along with nice dashes of unexpected actual humor...it seems like they leave enough room for the very talented cast to flesh things out with and add their own nuances, maybe ad lib a bit, and i really dig that. also, related to that, The writers arent afraid to actually let the full cast of characters actually have some character...we are occasionally getting some subtle insights to the supporting cast which adds depth to the texture of the show. i'm looking forward to learning more about everyone in the cast, not just the main two....

And the cast is really awesome...(forgive me but i'm awful with names so i dont know any of the actors names really)...but most of the key roles are really really impressive and their performances are so on-point. The two main buddy-cops are just absolutely NAILing it! I truly am excited and intrigued every week in every scene they show up in to see their interaction with each other and how their relationship evolves...be it the humor, or the actual emotion & bond thats growing....these two are delivering in a way that is TOTALLY believable to me. That is VERY impressive given the fantastical sci-fi future situation they are portraying...very impressive. like i said, i dont know the names of the two actors (i'll be IMDBing them after i post this but "Bones" and "Dorian" are just friggin awesome....

Another standout is the Captain (the lady who was in The Conjuring)...I was impressed with her in that, and i am just as impressed with her in this, maybe even more-so. Really like her work here and want to see her continue to be fully involved in the stories and have some storylines evolve around her character as well. I feel the tangible chemistry between the character of Captain & 'Bones'...feels solid and genuine as well.

the science-robot-fixer guy is great too, he is another favorite and i like the actors portrayal.
Same with the short-jerk-cop, pretty well executed i think.

if there is one thing i'm not sure is holding up is the love interest between the lady cop & 'Bones'...i'm just not feeling the chemistry here. part of me kinda hopes they don't explore it too much. i actually felt like there was more chemistry between 'Bones' and his dead ex-partners wife than with the lady cop.

i love the future they've set this show in! JUST the right amount of Sci-Fi to not throw it over the edge into unbelievability. They let the Sci-Fi future tech subtlely blend in and be a part of the background 'texture' of the show, and let it bubble up in unexpected surprising ways. i really love that. (spoiler: like the 'run-up and Van-flip', pretty fun . The effects on the show are executed and produced very very well.....like the way they are handling that.

so yeah, we're DEFINITELY all in on this show!

they do enough to move the story and let YOU form questions about what's happening, without answering a bunch of sci-fi questions raised that could really bog the show down...

MX caste > DRN caste

But they are machines, so I don't see it as racism, it more like Androids are just property, and some property is better than others (Benz vs Hyundai.)

Since they are machines it could be what's the differences between android and human consciousness?

Alien Nation was more about racism because it was biological vs biological.

Unless you want to take it to the arguments that slave owners didn't recognize slaves as being human.

in that she should have had much more scenes using her hand to hand combat skills rather than just shooting emotionlessly at defenseless folks. It looks as if that storyline isn't dead though, which is somewhat interesting.

The reason for my gripe is because she as an actress is capable of going good action scenes, much better than she did on the show.

I agree with the above, this show needed an antagonist badly. It was nice that they used the first 8 episodes to establish the chemistry between Kennex and Dorian, but it was at the expense of developing ALL the other characters on the show and developing this Syndicate which they talked about twice since the pilot. Now that they've introduced Dan Fielding and the concept of this wall, they should start to develop the overall arc of this show now.

I think they left a lot of elements of the world unclear until they were ready address it. Leaving stuff open allowed them to throw it in there when it served the story.

I kind of drifted off this show after the holidays but I'm kind of getting back into it. Watching a bunch in a row really made Fox's meddling obvious, trying to keep track of Karl Urban's obsession with the Syndicate and his relationship with Ealy's character was pretty difficult as they jumped from episode to episode.

I think I'm going to keep watching but I hope there will be some coherent arcs coming up.

It was brought up pretty early in this season in articles about the show. It's been obvious in certain episodes they are not in order. The Network suits just had to put their fingers in the pot and mess things up. I really think the show would have benefitted from being shown in production order. But Fox has done this before. They did it with Firefly as well.

Which makes me wonder if they truly want the show to succeed or not. I love this show but if we see a night change, we know how Fox feels about the show.

Even thou the show's ratings are better than The Following. Sleepy Hallow has already been picked up for next year; but Fox has yet to order new episodes of Almost Human.

Fox is apparently bringing back 24 so it might take over Almost Human's slot.

FOX cancels 'Almost Human'
7:13 PM PDT 4/29/2014 by Philiana Ng

UPDATED: The Karl Urban-Michael Ealy sci-fi drama will not return for a sophomore season.

Fox has canceled Almost Human.

The futuristic Karl Urban-Michael Ealy sci-fi drama, which got off to a promising start with its late November debut, will not be returning for a sophomore season.

Almost Human, which hails from J.J. Abrams and Fringe's J.H. Wyman, took place in 2048, when Los Angeles Police Department officers are partnered with human-like androids. Minka Kelly, Lili Taylor, Makenzie Crook and Michael Irby rounded out the cast.

Almost Human launched to a strong 9.2 million viewers and a 3.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demogrpahic in live-plus-same day following a special Sunday launch, before settling into its Monday perch with a weaker showing (6.8 million, 2.3). Though ratings dropped as the season progressed, the March finale averaged 5.63 million viewers and a 1.5 rating, on par with fellow Monday drama The Following. (The Following, which just wrapped its season, has since been renewed for a third.)

Fox had heavily promoted the series during the MLB playoffs last fall in hopes of attracting male viewers, much like how it marketed serial killer drama The Following the previous year, and had planned on continuing the push throughout the World Series and NFL games.

With several dramas already receiving series green lights (Broadchurch adaptation Gracepoint, Backstrom, Hieroglyph), Fox has limited shelf space with new projects such as the high-profile Batman prequel Gotham, Terrence Howard's hip-hop effort Empire and Red Band Society with Octavia Spencer, in contention for pickups. The cancellation news also comes on the same day Abrams unveiled his cast for Star Wars: Episode VII.

this was my favorite new series. as mentioned upthread, the production design puts agents of s.h.i.e.l.d. to shame (the falling car last night looked like a fucking joke). also, it had my favorite music in a tv series in a good long while.

It's tough to make a future-based procedural, especially when you keep making up devices that can save the day/solve the crime.

Also, they needed to do a MUCH better job with their overarching stories. Most of the time they seemed like afterthoughts (like Minka Kelly's entire character)
Ealy and Urban were great together.

Damn shame. I wonder if the show was too expensive to justify for the somewhat lackluster ratings.

just like firefly, they cancel a really good, well done unique show with a lots of potential, excellent cast show, and a growing cult following...

airing in UK now, hopefully the BBc america or some other 'smart' channel picks this one up....

Just like Firefly they aired the episodes out of order. There was an underlying storyline but it seemed choppy because they ruined the flow.
