Granted, it's been a long time since I've seen it, but I had close friends that were obsessed that demanded I see it with them, and upon watching it I remember having to feign enthusiasm to avoid an unpleasant clash of opinions.

not unlike a movie like Fast & Furious 6.

It also came out at a time when I was starting college and that movie made its rounds at raucous dorm and apartment parties with lots of alcohol.

I probably wouldn't disagree with any of the criticisms of the movie though as repeat viewings didn't have the same "magic" in a different environment. Anecdotally, I have found that the people who dislike it tended to watch it well after it released.

I still love it to death personally, but that may be because of its impact during a specific period in my life more than its merits as an actual movie.

Which was actually a really smart-dumb-fun movie,
exactly the type that should fit your description

Its kinda odd when we decide to suspend standard movie
critique approaches

Its okay for some movies to be meaningless

When 'Man with the Iron Fist' comes out, we examine it
like its the 'English Patient'

Yeah, I shall discuss this, sorry

...so I can't comment on that.

But it feels like you're trying to get a rise from me for defending the movie... *shrug*

Like Frank experienced, I was one of those people that tried to put other people on to Boondock Saints. Most of them were pretty lukewarm about it, if not outright hating it. And like I said, the movie definitely doesn't stand up to repeat viewings.

But whenever it comes up with people I watched it with (or watched it around the same time) it's always good feelings and lots of laughs. And I marked the fuck out when I was watching The Walking Dead and one of the McMurphy brothers walked onto the screen. And I still root for his character in large part because of his role in Boondock Saints (incidentally... "bundok" means mountains in Tagalog, and is where the word "boondocks" actually originated).

It's a bad movie... it really is. But that's not going to stop me from putting down the remote whenever it's on tv.

Lord knows I love some bad movies for silly reasons

But Boondock Saints had quite a big following, and I'm
sorta of confused and little annoyed

I just think its odd how we allow some movies to
be shitty, and not others

If RZA directs 'Boondock Saints' there's no cult
following, its just a "rapper who made a dumb movie"

And this isn't really about race

Its just about how hipsters just pick and choose the
types of movies that are to be cult favorites

I wonder if it just released at the perfect time... I know that, for me at least, college was my first exposure to REAL internet (ie, non-dial up). Not just that it was getting distributed online, but this was when "word of mouth" was expanded through AOL Instant Messenger, Nokia cell phones and burned cd's.

So maybe young, impressionable minds with shitty taste in movies all watched it around the same time? lol

It was sold on it's DVD release on the premise of "it was shelved because of Columbine." So it had this myth of "You gotta see this movie that was so hardcore, they couldn't release it," which turned in to word of mouth, and then well, you know the rest.

This happens all the time. It's like saying you love the B-side or the album cut more than a single. It's a hipster's wet dream.

Rocco was aight too, but Willam makes some insane fucking choices as an actor, and there's no way Troy Duffy gave him that direction.

If you thought that was bad, try to watch part 2. I made it about 10 mins before shutting it off.

I thought the first one was enjoyable when I saw it over a decade ago.

I saw the second at the theater and it's one of the few movies I can recall walking out of. Not even 30 minutes in and I couldn't take it.

Then I re-watched the first one a couple years ago and was surprised at how bad it was.

O_E, we don't agree on very much, but you're on point here. It's not a good movie. Bad acting, mostly bad script.

I think the vigilante premise, Willem Dafoe to at least somewhat take away from the rest of the bad acting, and a few amusing lines is all this movie had going for it. All of that plus Ron Jeremy for campiness is probably why it won a cult following.

But like you said, and I was leaning on up top... Dafoe and a few funny lines throughout made it fun to watch. But it is not good. And really doesn't hold up.

At the beginning it sounded like a classic success story: Troy Duffy, the writer/director was from Boston and working as a bartender in L.A. Somehow Harvey Weinstein gets the script and loves it. He buys it from Duffy for like $300,000, signs him on as the director and gives him a $15 million budget to make the movie. Then he gets Duffy's band a record deal for his band, who will do the soundtrack for the film. Weinstein even buys the bar where Duffy works and says that they're going to run it together. So Duffy gets a couple of other aspiring film maker friends of his from Boston to come out and document what he figures will be his ascent to greatness. That's all the prologue.

What his friends soon discover that if you give an asshole a lot of money, what you get is an asshole with a lot of money. And everything turns to shit. Duffy pisses everyone off and burns every bridge in nearly record time. It's like watching a car crash, except you want the driver to die horribly.

It's not spectacular film making, but it's engrossing. 'Cause, hey, sometimes it's nice to watch an unrepentant asshole get everything he deserves. I only felt bad that he dragged his friends and even his family down with him.

So yeah, I have no interest in ever seeing Bondock Saints. But I like watching assholes get theirs.

Boondock Saints is little more than an extended angry white male's violent fantasy of righteous retribution against a world that doesn't serve him any longer, and the doc shows clearly why that seed is in the film.

a quote I wrote down from the first time I watched the film:

Maniac Troy to God-Knows-Who on the Telephone: "And the way I think about it is, if I'm a fucking record company, I'm dealing with guys that live out of fucking garages that try and bang strippers to get fucking cheese sandwiches."

uh huh, Troy...

Of all of the people I know that rock that movie like it's a great film, every single one are the same people who play Dropkick Murphys non stop and sport Irish Pride. At least that's my experience.

I had a roommate in college, Micheal McSweeney, dude was a couple generations removed from Ireland. He drank nothing but Irish beers, had the biggest Irish flag I've ever seen hanging on his bedroom wall and would bring up Boondock Saints every single time he talked about movies. Looking back, he was kind of a douche.

He was a hell of a lot of fun to drink with though.

correct me if i'm wrong, but there weren't too many movies with irish people acting badass before that. in that case it didn't really matter how good it was, it was gonna catch on with boston/irish people regardless.

And should have gained legions of young fans who like
"silly fun."

Its actually well-written, actually has a story,
pays proper homage to the genre while introducing new
elements, has fantastic music and a badass cast

Next to Wreck It Ralph its the most fun I've had watching
a movie in the last year

> And should have gained legions of young fans who like

You're trying to apply the same prism surrounding BS to MWTIF, while no longer being a "young fan". The entertainment options nowadays are MUCH more varied than they were back when BS came out, and it might be assuming too much that pseudo-hipster types are watching movies (or same types of movies) at the same rate as back then.

In other words, the disparity you're trying to expose is probably due to a generational shift more than anything actually movie related.

To illustrate this, I would venture that if you posed a question like "why isn't Boondock Saints as revered as 80's cult classic _______?", then a greater % of respondents (of their generation) would have watched the 80's cult classic than of the generation that watched BS (or replace BS with any late 90's/early 00's "cult classic" that you deem actually worthy).

Cursory 80's cult classic list: http://www.imdb.com/list/rM0ZioFrftU/

Even thought it was a Kung-Fu film set in feudal China

And strangely, it featured one of hollywood's strongest Asian
women (who is outspoken about Asian fetishization), who took the
role almost surely because the film turned the docile Asian
woman stereotype on its head with a fun, little twist in the
story.

i saw it a few years ago and asked myself
what was so special about it.
i don't know, but i still like it.

probably mostly because of nostalgia.
