"The Best Man Holiday (Lee, 2013)"

Went to an advanced screening the other night. If you loved the first one, you'll definitely appreciate this one. I was skeptical going in, because the trailers look 'meh', but it was highly enjoyable.

This go-round, they leaned a little harder on the melodrama (it got a liiiiiiittle Tyler Perry in places), but it had a really solid core and some legit laughs. If you haven't seen the first one, you might wanna do that before heading into this one, because it was an exercise in subtext. They pulled A LOT from the first one and everyone remained true to their characters.

The performances, for the most part, were pretty solid. Terrence Howard stole the show AGAIN. Regina Hall (one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood), Monica Calhoun, and Melissa De Sousa held it down for the ladies in a big way. Nia Long's storyline didn't really give her much to work with, but she was fine.

While it's not as fresh and compelling as the first one, it was a fitting end to the story. Fans of 'The Best Man' should definitely check it out when it drops.

People like to hate on it and throw it in the same lot of Black Rom-coms, but IMO, it's one of the best ones. The anticipation for this movie is palpable and I'm predicting a $25-$30 million opening. It will tap out at around $60 million.

Why does this board hate black movies?

You haven't even seen the damn movie.

If this was another slave movie, you'd say "This is gonna be great".

But because it's contemporary and modern, you hate on it before you've even seen it.

Does this board have a problem with Black romantic comedies?

The first Best Man was beloved by many Black people.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

Listen, this shit had me laughing and I enjoyed watching the characters deal with those pent up issues they've been carrying around from the last film. Nice to see those get resolved while still leaving room for more if they want to do it.

Also, I need the costume designer to re-do my wardrobe stat. These niggas fashion game was tip top in this joint.

Wish I saw this with a black audience though. I watched a screener on the flight home from L.A.

but i really enjoyed this. i don't think you had to see the first movie to enjoy this one at all. everyone gave REALLY strong performances. the script was straightforward and moved along briskly w/o stringing the viewer along.

Wished for more of the fun in the second hour, and there was a gang of contrived shit, but it was still nice to spend some time with these characters again, plus as bwood said there's now room for a third movie, which should happen

I also wish Terrence Howard would do more comedy

More conventional than the first, I thought it was gonna get meandering but they just started stacking storyline after storyline and in the end there was more good than mediocre. Cast was very entertaining as I thought they would be. Q is still one of the most watchable black characters ever, right up there with Alonzo Harris.

Which is why Universal needs to do whatever they need to do to get Terrence, Malcolm and company back for the third movie

Remember that sitcom with him and Robin Givens?

I thought the cast did a really good job.
It had the "Tyler Perry" moments but they weren't as jarring as his usually are.

I was surprised to hear so many sniffling and hankies out in the audience.

everyone was in rare form the second go round.

Morris Chestnutt - who, let's be real, is more miss in his acting but he brought his A game for this one.

Regina Hall: damn, she needs to work more. She was great as Candace.

Monica Calhoun: can someone tell me WHY she doesn't work that much? Because she's talented as hell. She didn't get much to do as Mia the first time around but she got a LOT of depth this time and really, truly was one of the emotional cores of the movie.

Sanaa Lathan: I'm always happy to see her pop up in a movie where she's given something to do. She was good here also.

Terence: yea, dude needs to do more comedy because he was utter hilarity as Q

Harrold P: he oddly didn't do much but was fine. Same with Melissa DeSousa.

Taye Diggs: hmmm...he was fine but oddly I just didn't care for him this go round. I guess his character showed he was even more of a dick than in the past. But, I guess dealing with the stress of being umeployed, having a second book that wasn't shit and a wife who's about to give birth made him more desperate? I don't know...

but yea, it veered into Tyler Perry/TD Jakes land a lot. And it really could have been 30 minutes shorter.

But, it as a fun movie. And deserving of the nearly 31 million dollars it took in at the box office...

Obviously bullshit, and was given its right amount
of bullshit attention...moved the plot forward, but
was hardly an essential element

A touch of dramatic effect, but not too bad, nobody
really cared about football at the end of the day

We cared about the family and friendships

Its basically film making 101 on how to use a Macguffin

I'm talking about the game, I'm in my death bed, but I want you to break the NFL rushing record, as soon as you leave the field come straight home part.

That was hokey.

I was sort of expecting him to still be in his uniforms and burst through the door like it was a Strong Safety & give his wife the ball.

I loved the movie though.

They probably threw the extra football shit in to draw men in, and it worked, cuz I heard some dudes sniffling.

Well.

It hit all the right notes, had the original cast and made me genuinely miss my college friends... Again. I'm a fan of the OG movie... It's one of the first DVDs I've purchased. It was hokey but came full circle. They stuffed the movie with so much ... Life without going full Tyler Perry.

I did not see Mia's cancer and death coming because the trailer didn't even hint at that and Q getting married? Didn't see that coming. Looking forward to this 3rd Best Man movie which will hopefully come out faster than this one. I'd see it again.

Dude. I'm gonna call it out when i see it.

This board usually have a "shit until the critics say its good" mentality with movies that have a mostly black cast.

And that is bullshit.

It's no problem though. I know who I am.

I'm gonna call out these evil ass hating ass people. Self hatred people.

I'm gonna bring the love to my people when they try to put something out for the new current generation.

I'm excited to see ALL people putting out good projects.

I'm not going to be biased against any movie specifically because of the race of the cast. I watch ALL movies.

The vast majority of people in this post have positive things to say about the movie, yet somehow OKP is full of self-hating anti-black movie folks.

Black people preoccupied with distancing themselves
from black culture or rather, over-focused on making
sure everyone knows that they don't subscribe to all of
it

Very insecure, and sad

This is how you get PTP hating on Don Cheadle's accent in
'Hotel Rwanda'

It also explains a lot of the hate against 'Man With the
Iron' Fist' which is an all-time great fun movie if a white
director does the exact same movie

The bigger problem with it is that white people see these
black people, lose their progressive white sense of pause,
and express how they really feel about black things, which
is usually really bad

I see the bullshit. I see the hate. The blatant disrespect.

The dismissals when it comes to mostly black cast movies.

You can put your head in the sand like a coward if you want to.

I ain't cut like that.

I'm gonna call shit out.

Just treat our shit with respect. Basic respect like other peoples' shit gets treated.

Promote and anchor our shit consistently like the other movies that get anchored.

Don't start none. Won't be none.

There you go with that bullshit.

I never said jump to praise something just because black folks made it.

But movies that star mostly black casts will have to be wack til proven good on here. Yet so many other garbage ass bullshit films get passes and get the "i'm eclectic, you just didn't get it" anchored posts.

Treat ALL movies the same regardless of the color of the cast.

Only mostly black casts are ignored and shat on before heads even see it.

Night Catches Us (good movie btw) didn't even get an anchor even though it starred Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington with a key role played by Tarik.
On this site?? Tarik's own site?? Mackie and Washington should have been enough. I had to fight to get that shit on here. Damn shame.

LilNick, you just a scary ass dude. Wanna act like this shit i'm talking about don't exist. This dismissive prejudicial attitude toward black films on this board.

If it hurt your feelings that i call this shit out. Get over it. I just ain't scared like you. You lil bitch. Uncle tom ass...

There's no post on Generation Iron. Or Frozen. Or Delivery Man. Or the Kevin Hart comedy special that came out this year. It's no one's job to make sure every movie has a post on here.

If there's a picture that's come out, and you want to start a discussion about it, make a post about. That also goes for older films. It's that simple.

Or, alternately, that black people cannot fully critique a "black film" and say that it is lackluster or bad if it is actually lackluster or bad.

Neither statement is true.

GOOD! TBH made a lot of money this weekend (nearly double it's budget) I suspect it should make more money at least into the thanksgiving holiday (though not as much given that the hunger games sequel opens this weekend or is it next weekend?)

It's a WIN all around!

http://www.deadline.com/2013/11/universal-malcolm-d-lee-in-talks-to-make-the-best-man-holiday-sequel-after-monster-opening/

EXCLUSIVE: After a rousing opening weekend that saw his sequel The Best Man Holiday gross over $30 million domestically, Malcolm D. Lee is negotiating a deal with Universal to write, direct and produce another installment of the hit ensemble romantic comedy. Sean Daniel is also in talks to come back and produce another film through his The Sean Daniel Company shingle. No word yet on locking in the ensemble cast. I don’t believe they have options on a third film, so clearly all of them will be looking for pay bumps. First, Lee has to write it. It took 14 years for Lee to come back with a sequel, but this one is going to happen much more quickly. He is rewriting to direct an untitled project for Fox Searchlight, but this clearly becomes a priority project for Universal.

The $17 million sequel had the fifth-largest opening for an R-rated romantic comedy, the second-highest opening for an urban romantic comedy and the sixth-biggest opening for an urban-themed film overall. It also received an A+ CinemaScore across all quadrants. Lee is repped by Resolution.

it's Hollywood. Don't act brand new! LOL!

They ALWAYS DO SHIT LIKE THIS.

just like when Eve's Bayou came out and it was a legitimate oscar contender across the board.

Critics and the like couldn't even comprehend that this small ass movie, this small as BLACK INDIE, could even be in consideration for anything.

And they labeled it "urban", "black", etc. and the movie itself could have been played by all white actors the film's themes and story transcended race, etc.

it did relatively well at the box office but it was a wrap once the "urban" and "black" label was being tacked onto it.

Shame, Eve's Bayou is great.

This was actually pretty good. I am really not one for "holiday" movies but I thought this was well crafted and it made me really smile. It's great to see african americans in a positive light, no thugging, no gangsta activity (that fight doesn't count...), it was a feel good movie despite the sadness in it.

however i do feel it was telegraphed but most comedy dramas like this are...like we all knew Q and old girl would end up in bed, that she would give old boy the money to keep his school open, that they would name their baby Mia, etc etc....

but it was good to see.

I genuinely laughed out loud at a lot of scenes and got tear eyed at some of the sadder moments.

But yes yes I appreciate this movie.

Kudos.

A for acting
A for direction
A for script

This was a great film. I was really surprised at how good the script was. A perfect blend of romantic comedy and drama. Lot's of good zingers from Quentin.

Don't sleep on this!

I agree with all the praise on here... Acting was great, Regina Hall specifically killed it...

only slight negative, tho I still enjoyed it, was the football scene, just looked too fake, I understand why it was in there but it did not fall in line with the rest of the movie

def left door open for the 3rd one with someone being TH's best man, but can't think of any type of story that would top this one... I'd check it tho..

I'd much rather watch a well executed dramedy like this over a lot of the bullshit that comes out

Shit was MAD SAD, B.

And to be honest, I was expecting it to be the type of sad where I could pretend like I was above it all and judge it for being melodramatic (see also: Tyler Perry).

Naw.

Shit was EFFECTIVELY sad. It's essentially the same plot as Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, only done far better. I'm in my own house holding back tears.

It did cheat itself into and out of a few corners (the Lance-Harper "I'm sorry' speech was pure miswritten corn, thought to be fair that's a hard speech to write - and oh yeah, isn't that the exact same plot point from the first film?) but overall it's pretty good. I want a whole film about Quentin though - damn the rest of them.
