it's really a major improvement from the theatrical cut that you generally see broadcast on TV.

>I don't get why it's considered dope.

For one the set/art design is basically the blueprint for every dystopian future sci-fi movie of the past 30 years.

250. "Have you seen Ex-Machina?"
In response to Reply # 174

Blade Runner is weird to me....cause Phillip K is always called a 'post-modern' writer and the movie is often characterized as post-modern.....but there is absolutely nothing post-modern about the movie's theme. I sum it up as: The will to survive is what makes us human and the finite nature of life is what makes things beautiful.

Again, there's really nothing post-modern about that. It's much more rooted in old philosophers like Descartes.

On the other hand....Ex-Machina is totally post-modern in it's themes and asks completely different questions rooted in 20th century philosophy rather than the antiquated stuff.

They're both excellent movies imo....but ex-machina is basically a wet-dream for me. The first movie (Ive seen) that addresses all my favorite philosophers.

The two main characters were pretty unlikable, and the only redeeming aspects of the movie were the shots of Tokyo and the music. A long exercise in white whiny angst.

Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, War Horse, Amistad, even Schindler's are not that great.

Spielberg is insanely talented but beyond that not that bright, I think. When he gets serious his intellectual deficiencies become really apparent.

The first 10 minutes of SVR is the best directing in
the history of film

Literally changed my life and politics on war, never
been able to say that about a non-documentary

And the character acting is at least very good

That Matt Damon story about his brother in the barn with the girl? That was HORRIBLE. It was so obvious what they were trying to do....which only made it fall flatter.

The first 15 minutes of that movie was an amazing revelation and completely groundbreaking technique. The rest was a made-for-tv movie at best.

but get passes because most folk think they're *cute* or *hot* or have a great personality that let's them skate by in roles:

Aubrey Plaza
Olivia Munn

Nicolas Cage (he *USED* to be good, he's not now)
Ryan Gosling (he gives great, constipated DEW DEW FACE though)
Bradley Cooper

Taye Diggs

add on...please.

like, folk STAN for this chick. And save for that Daria live action short she did, I don't get it. AT ALL.

I mean, shit, there are folk on Parks and Rec who are *WAY* funnier than her, and don't get NO shine.

Plaza isn't even worth all this praise.

>>Olivia Munn
>
>No

we can agree to disagree. I feel like if she continues make interesting choices in terms of roles (the Olivia Munn contingent I know SWEAR by her work on The Newsroom and this occult horror movie she's doing with Eric Bana, directed by the guy who did SINISTER (Scott Derrickson) shows serious promise. So, I will gladly amend my views on her...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2377322/?ref_=sr_1 Beware The Night, the Scott Derrickson movie.

But, until then, I'm real wary of giving her praise. What I've seen her in I just haven't been real impressed.

true he used to be, but damn he sucks. Like I can't even rock with the parody acting he's doing.

yes he needs better scripts definitely.

nah...i'm going to need him to do some small, indie gritty shit ala The Machinist, etc. that he carries ON HIS OWN, etc. because I've always felt like he was someone that had some talent but really just got by on being pretty...

Silver Linings Playbook: not a decent movie, but that was ALL about Jennifer Lawrence for me, and not him.

YUP. I need him to either go back to acting school for a couple years or just go the fuck away.

BINGO!

Biel and Timberlake aren't great actors at all.

Timbo has more potential to eventually BE better...but Biel? nah. she's horrible.

But I need Justin to start singing again...he's good at that.

Alien, Aliens, and Predator are classics, hands down.

Alien 3, Predator 2, and Predators are good fun.

I even have a soft spot for both Alien vs. Predator movies. They aren't great, but they also aren't completely awful. I look at them this way... We aren't getting anything better.

*NOTE... Alien Resurrection is the worst of the bunch though, that's rough to throw compliments at.

I also like all the Terminator movies, including 3 and Salvation. Obviously take a giant step down from the first two but still its fucking Terminators and they are cool. lol

Can't help it, I'm a sucker for Stallone, and seeing him pal around with Statham, Li, Lundgren, Willis, Schwarzenegger, Crews, and Austin makes for a good time. It really is a throwback to the movies of old, and nothing too over-the-top like the sequel ended up being.

In fact, the humor falls flat. Very bland.
Pryor was too dry. Red Foxx was struggling with his delivery.
Arsenio was trying way too hard.
The whole script was awful.

The best parts are the individual comedy set-pieces and the seemingly ad-libbed quips here and there.

The story, acting, direction, continuity, all that? Blech.

Imo,it could of been great but it's pacing is really strange..like if Oliver Stone had just moved this around and cut a little of that it would of been a much better film. There's still more than a few great scenes individually, though..

Never had any desire to see it in the theater so it was pretty easy to have it on in the background once it finally came on cable

I actually wanted to see Alexander on the big screen & decided against it after seeing the reviews & run time. One of the smartest decisions I ever made.

Let's be clear...Dark City is an amazing film...but The Matrix was a better metaphor.

Even for a sci-fi flick...there was a bit of a believability about The Matrix...like it was making a huge social comment within the scope of a really good film.

Dark City? The mythology was kinda all over the place....

I think that Dark City was dope enough to be mentioned in the same breath as The Matrix...but I don't necessarily clap to it being a better film

and i can only barely get over it. besides the story of the 2002 season and billy beane and art howe's personalities, there's so many little things they got wrong. the championship banners were already up in fenway. the song his daughter played wasn't created until 2008. they were pretty lazy in their research.

Shyamalan gets alot of grief over his endings, but I thought the twist was novel.

The first two thirds are really well done regardless.

The sound design in that movie is mind-blowing. And I LOVE Cruise's relationships with his kids. It's a dead-beat dad's triumph in so many ways. Too bad the sub-plot with Tim Robbins stayed off the cutting-room floor. The comparisons to Iraq were genuinely painful. Tom Cruise killing him moved the main theme forward....but there was no need to get all political with the Robbins character. Nickel-bag preaching in an otherwise great film.

No shots intended, but to me Royal Tenenbaums has always tried way too hard to be a "dark" and "ironic" fable about a family

Every time I try to give it another shot, I come away with that same conclusion

On the other hand, I really think Max Fischer is possibly the greatest teen character I've ever seen in a movie

ALL of his movies are boring as fuck.
Sure, his set designs are interesting, but thats it.
Fantastic Mr. Fox was okay.
But I have never wanted to watch any of his films more than once.
And some I even didn't want to finish.

Essentially, small, personal quiet dramas could still be made in black and white. I'm not talking a sweeping epidemic, just a few.

I was a CGI nerd at the time and the dinosaurs never seemed real to me outside of a few shots.

I read the book Jurassic Park and the book dealt more with the ethics of science and man's attempt to tame nature. The movie dumped that theme to appeal to kids, I suppose. I thought the movie was going to be more suspenseful. I was 14 when the movie came out and was at the age that I wanted something more sophisticated than the average movie geared for kids.

Some of the action notes were good - the paw imprints rumbling when the T-Rex walked, the chase scene when the T-Rex attacked and the mirror said 'Objects ate closer than they appear.'.

I liked the second one because it made the dinosaurs flesh and blood creatures and less pet-like. And had some great moments of action. The ending notwithstanding.

You watch:
Revenge of the Sith
A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

In that order?!

Why would you leave Attack of the Clones last?

Why even start with Revenge of the Sith?

I hope you got your roman numerals fucked up cause this is blowing my mind right now.

everything on the list is post 1979, when was A Clockwork Orange released?

Magnolia, i appreciate for the acting and tone, but i typically have a hard time digesting bourgeois white angst, which Magnolia was full of. and its pretty easy to love a director when you LOVE HIS OTHER FOUR MOVIES

Amores Perros kind of is too, but I love it to death

I didn't see Biutiful so I have no idea of it's also 2 hours of people hitting rock bottom interlocked by some type of accident, but i'm not really trying to find out lol

I never understood why people hated that scene.

Also, Darth Maul has one of the greatest introductions in movie history. His appearance at the doors is one of the coolest most badass intro ever. The killed his momentum when they split him in half. He could have been a contender because even though he was only in the film for 5 - 10 min., and only had 2 lines IN THE ENTIRE FILM, he's still very memorable.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

And I believe that it is where cinema is headed, in general.
There are some really great ones, so far.
Blair Witch Project.
Paranormal Activity (the 1st one).
Day Zero (it was about the 2 Columbine boys).
Chronicle.
Cloverfield.
Trash Humpers.

The Dirties is about two teens who film themselves making a comedy spoof about seeking revenge on their bullies, but one of them seriously starts taking it to another level.
Its not bad.
There are some laughable moments.
Not the best "Found Footage" movie.
It has a similar theme to "Zero Day". I think "Zero Day" is better.
Who the hell was shooting this?
Its never made clear. And how the hell were there 2 different camera angles on them if its supposed to be just one cam dude?
The cam dude just follows them around everywhere, but yet the 2 friends rarely communicate with him/her.
Seemed a bit odd and thrown in there.
I thought it would've been better if the cam was being held by the main protagonist.
Looked kinda like The Office (style-wise).
I prefer rougher looking found footage, as opposed to this crispy MTV look.
But still, this one wasn't as cliche as I thought it would be.

Contagion is hard for me to re-watch, though, because I'd consider it one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. 90m of pure anxiety. the way society unfolds is all too plausible and it really play's out like a neurotic germophobe envisioning his worst case scenario in order to get some relief by envisioning the safe landing at the end. and yeah, sure, that works okay, but the time before the end was just lots of dread for me.

I feel like people use Heath's performance as sort of a benchmark to measure the film as a whole. When in actuality, most of the scenes w/out Heath are snooze worthy.

Denzel was good, but not Oscar good in my opinion and the movie was average. There was no ambiguity with his character. He was just bad. I would have enjoyed it more if he had some redeeming qualities. He did those bad things, but he also did some good stuff. Forces the viewer to reconcile how they feel about the character. The Shield did that well with Vic Mackey. He was bad, but he did a lot of good police work. So there was a grey area with him.

i don't think the edward norton hulk is THAT much better (if at all) than the ang lee one (the only real problem with the latter is the dumb bit with the dogs)

He ruins every single movie he is in. I hate Mark Walhberg more than AIDS

269. "Kristen Stewart >>>>>>> Jennifer Lawrence"
In response to Reply # 0

Stewart gets shat on for starring in a crappy book franchise while Lawrence has been propped up as the greatest thing since Meryl Streep after being in the "good" book franchise. I loved her in Winter's Bone but she hasn't given a great performance since, despite the fact that they want to nominate her for an Oscar just for showing up in a movie. Lawrence has access to any script she wants, but i think Stewart is the better actress if given the same opportunities.

In response to Reply # 269

She's picked some bad roles, her recent great performance was seen by nobody in the US (Clouds of Sils Maria), and she's been a zero in terms of personality with the press (and in Snow White and the Huntsman.)

She might be better but Lawrence is the bigger personality which is why she's the star. I wouldn't be stunned if Stewart settled into being an indie stalwart and is perfectly happy there.

274. "Yeah i meant in terms of acting"
In response to Reply # 273

In Clouds and Camp X-Ray and some other lesser seen films she killed it. I think Lawrence gets over-hyped cause of her whole shtick with the press, taking more mainstream roles, etc. I'm glad K-Stew is settling into the Indie realm for the most part. I almost wish Lawrence would do the same cause i LOVED Winter's Bone Jennifer Lawrence.
