I'm asking if you GENUINELY liked it. It's the sort of film that I wanted to like, and people have been known to convince themselves to like things they WANT to like.

Outside of maybe pre-Avengers Whedon disciples, who aren't terribly numerous?

This isn't like a film starring a big actor or directed by a big name. It's a clever twist on a played-out genre, with emphasis on laughs and and eventually winking spectacle.

If you wanted something scary, you'd be disappointed--- but if you want clever fun and genre subversion, this movie delivers it in boatloads IMO. I don't think anyone who posted on OKP that they loved it said it was crazy scary, they just said it was crazy. Which it is.

that seeing certain tyoes of films after their intial zeitgeist has passed and opinions have been bandied about ad naseum..it will take away or in some aspects, inprove the viewing experience of the film.

That doesn't mean a shit film wont be seen as a shit film or a great film wont be seen as a great film, immediately or several years after when viewed...but a film like Cabin is one of those out of the norm flicks that I feel, needs to be seen in a theater at the time of release..with peeople, on a big screen, ..not on some home television with you and your damn cat.

they show us what's behind the curtain WAY too early. like, the first scene, even. and then repeatedly throughout the movie. what they should have done was have a straight horror story that was strong enough to stand alone, and THEN slowly start peeling back the layers. because their "teenagers go to a cabin in the woods for some reason" story was so weak and cliche (on purpose maybe, like to dig at the genre, but even then it was a mistake), they almost had to shout it out right away that THERE'S SO MUCH MORE GOING ON HERE! otherwise, the audience is sound asleep.

I have no problem with people thinking CITW didn't deliver upon its promise. I have a problem with believing those who thought it delivered didn't actually think that.

of deconstructing horror films.

May have even liked this if it came out before Scream. It's pointless after Scream though.

I'm not sure I'd dig it even if I hadn't seen Scream. The behind the scenes thing was just kinda corny from the start.

>they show us what's behind the curtain WAY too early.

but can it be counted as a negative in a movie that was designed to spill some particular beans from the get go? and not everything was revealed all at once either. you understood straight away there was another element at play with the reveal, but u still have no idea wtf is happening in any kind of definitive detail.

>like, the first scene, even. and then repeatedly throughout the
>movie. what they should have done was have a straight horror
>story that was strong enough to stand alone, and THEN slowly
>start peeling back the layers.

and the point of doing that would be...? to show a cliche'd horror story as the main story? the point of it being cliche'd to the point of audible groans is a glaringly obvious part of the tone of the movie, a means to an end. they even took the "creepy old dude warning teens of messed up house in the woods" guy and extracted a pretty hilarious laugh out of it (with the speaker-phone bit). the point was (and u already know this) to turn all this shit on its head, or to treat it with a modern sarcastic 'we've seen all this shit before in a million other horror flicks' vibe and have fun with the results (that said, there was still a genuine story/plot going on around & outside the microcosm of the cabin, whether or not it was a horror story is up for discussion, my opinion being that it was more gods & monsters epic than strictly blood & gore horror).

>because their "teenagers go to a cabin in the woods for some reason" story was so weak and
>cliche (on purpose maybe, like to dig at the genre, but even
>then it was a mistake), they almost had to shout it out right
>away that THERE'S SO MUCH MORE GOING ON HERE! otherwise, the
>audience is sound asleep.

but...but....isnt that the point? cos there IS so much more going on here? its the story outside of the faux-story that works like a regular plot, revealing bits n pieces of itself as everything moves along, but everything within the controlled bubble of the cabin & the specific wooded area its confined in via invisible barrier is a cog in the wheel, not the whole wheel. it manages to provide some commentary on the state of horror flicks and its tropes while simultaneously pushing forward a larger story of humans paying tribute to old gods to keep the peace.

i get criticism, but i dont get expectations post-viewing of a film that is trying to be anything BUT the horror movie cliches it lampoons, but the cool part (to me) was its duality as providing sarcastic commentary and being an actual film (even the title of the film works in favour of both of these goals, the general and overused setting reflected in the simplicity of the title speaks on the sarcastic nature of the film, and the title works as just a title as well...pretty sure i explained that semi-coherently...i think).

While I didn't find CITW to be scary or side-splittingly funny, I enjoyed it because it spoke to my glaring sarcasm. People say that it revealed too much way too soon, but I don't think it was trying to outsmart us. It was witty and sarcastic. It wasn't going for straight-forward shocks and over-the-top laughs. If thats not your bag, then fair enough.

I don't find "This Is The End" to be all that great of a movie. The 3rd act was too silly and cheesy for me. The whole Whitney Houston thing was trite, and the dance scene was trying too hard.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. It takes the scary hicks vs. fearful teenagers story and turns it on it's head. If you're a fan of brutal violence used for humor you're gonna like this.

Then again, I don't like horror movies.

That's the entire point of the film.

If you loved Evil Dead and thought it had logic issues, it gives those films a framework and a plan that even the Evil Dead reboot stuck to.

Buffy S4E22, Primeval. I guess Wheeon wanted to recreate that scene with a bigger budget.
