"Whoa, Whoa, HOLDUP: What was good about 'OLDBOY?' "

Just seentededed it again...first time sitting down
and seeing the whole thing in one sitting.

What a messy, panicky, amateurish piece of dogshit.

What was good about it?

Gimme an answer other than "Well the Japanese Manga was
really great"

Because it probably wasn't great at all. It was probably
dogshit like the movie was.

Spike Lee's is about to be 3000 time better than this,
nerds be damned.

What did y'all like about it, other than the fact that it
was an Asian film that made y'all feel artistic and cool?

Honest question.

At the time Oldboy was in theatres there wasn't anything like it playing at the time. The absurdity of the plot is what sold me. The imagery was surreal.

Spike Lee's version is going to be better.
We already know its a FACT that Asian originals are always better than the remakes (hell, any original is better than an American remake...)

Because of the taboo nature of the film (SPOILER: the brother and sister having a relationship), I would wager they would change that in the American version because that's just a bit too much...(maybe make it a cousin, or something else...)

I like Spike Lee but he hasn't done anything great lately. I'd actually rather see M Night do this because he's good with twists...lol, just kidding.

Anyway like the first poster said, your disdain for the movie won't allow one reason to say why it's good to satisfy you so let me leave you with this "everything ain't for everyone..." so you didn't like it...fine.

there are 1000s more ppl who did, and 100s more who agree with you. i am one who liked it because it was such a wild crazy plot, i thought the imagery was great, and i think the twist made for a pleasant surprise. but that's just me.

oh well. there are other movies to enjoy.

After Let The Right One In, which was great, was remade by Americans as Let Me In, which might have been even better, I will give any foreign-to-American remake of ANYTHING a shot if I like the talent involved.

And with Oldboy, I like the talent involved. Love Olsen, Copley, SLJ, Lance Reddick, and Brolin in the right part slays. Sean Bobbitt is doing cinematography, and he's a stud. The production designer did Argo, The Ides of March, and The Town, and regardless of what you think of those actual films on the whole, they look and feel like a distinct world. And then there's Spike, who has excelled as of late in films that he didn't himself write.

I feel like that list of people collaborating alone merits a watch. Just my opinion, though.

leme preface this by saying i think one's state of mind, time period, mental and emotional state play a huge part in how a film is recieved. when i first saw this on my own in my empty house (fam had gone overseas for a month or so), i'd moved my entire setup to the living room and was watchin movies in the dark with a sack of dro and multiple buckets of M&Ms. add to that a slight depression due to girl-related shit, and reality kinda set the mood.

i thought the film did a lot without pretending to say more than what was going on, which was one real roundabout flipped revenge flick in which our protag is on a manufactured path of vengeance. the twists in the story kept me invested, as did the unrelenting dreariness and up-close violence. the hammer sequence doesn't completely fall apart on repeat viewings for me but u do kinda sit there and go "well........it's one guy with a hammer...them other idiots should've shut him down by now".

it's a pretty straight forward flick in terms of what's going on, and it kept me guessing pretty much til the end.

curious tho if the opinion u got on the film has been the same since it came out? or if this is just a change of opinion based on seeing it years later?

I'll translate this in Latte-ese-

So basically no matter how shitty a movie is, you can still
like it if you're in the state of mind to like something
about it. Cool. That's certainly true. Has nothing to do with
the almost universal praise heaped upon 'Oldboy' by arthouse
guys.

So-

There was nothing good about 'Oldboy' but that its "dark"
and foreign. You were feeling dark and down-and-out when it
dropped, so you liked the darkness.

Ok.

I mean, there's porn I have a closer connection to than
'Godfather' because some of the "actresses" look like
women I've fucked.

The thing is this:

We're adults -- its time we teased these things apart
and form some real opinions on stuff.

Because these juvenile hyper-emotional ways to respond
to art aren't pushing the envelope, like, at all.

The reason why good films don't get made is because crackpot
bullshit like 'Oldboy' gets elevated for reasons that have
nothing to do with the actual film.

>i thought the film did a lot without pretending to say more
>than what was going on, which was one real roundabout flipped
>revenge flick in which our protag is on a manufactured path of
>vengeance.

Have no idea what this means

It was a revenge movie

And a shitty one.

the twists in the story kept me invested, as did
>the unrelenting dreariness and up-close violence.

scenes from film students

The hammer scene? You guys kidding me? That was sillier
than the scenes in 'Man With The Iron Fist' which was
SUPPOSED to be outright silly

There was NOTHING good about it. Zero.

the hammer

Uh...that this requires a discussion tips me off that nobody
actually watched this movie.

>it's a pretty straight forward flick in terms of what's going

"Kept you guessing" because you hadn't seen it before and
there was a dumbass pretentious "twist"

So the fuck what

Movie was awful

>curious tho if the opinion u got on the film has been the same
>since it came out? or if this is just a change of opinion
>based on seeing it years later?

Nah, saw it in pieces before. Had no real opinion.

Saw it one sitting the other day.

Now realize this film is just the beneficiary of an arthouse
PTP-er-like community that fetishizes Asian films and elevates
them to elite status for absolutely no reason.

Its an awful film.

Spike Lee's will probably be about 4000 X better and get 100000X
the criticism for "not living up to the original," when again, the
original was high school senior play quality

well, i mean i was only slightly witness to the arthouse praise, but i dont really mess with movie reviews or anything outside of a few websites (mainly PTP as of the last 5-6yrs). just wanted to give my take cos who knows the many reasons ppl can give for digging it (all of which im sure you'll shut down).

yeah probly, but i've always approached 'art' chiefly from the emotional POV first cos as much u can argue it away as juvenile, what's the point in recieving a flick purely from a technical standpoint if it wasnt my job to do so? im not a critic or a reviewer or work in the industry, i actively invite films to fuck with my emotions in all sortsa ways cos thats how i can gauge on a personal level wtf i like.

>The reason why good films don't get made is because crackpot
>bullshit like 'Oldboy' gets elevated for reasons that have
>nothing to do with the actual film.

the story, the mystery, the whys and hows, the constant torture of the main character, the direction, the bla bla bla. clearly ppl will LIKE something about this film that actually happened in the film and it was something they watched themselves. this is still a possibility, right? lol.

>>i thought the film did a lot without pretending to say more

>And a shitty one.

nah wouldnt say its shitty. its SLOW, but not shitty *shrugs*. what i meant was, ur sayn the 'arthouse' latte sippers were on the nuts of this flick just becos (or for no good reason), and i felt it wasnt trying to BE that kinda flick. just saw it as a cool flick telln a twisted story. i have zero thoughts on the original manga or watever the source was cos i never watched/read it. i was basically just saying ur accusation of it is..well for starters, hecka LATE. so its kinda hard to gauge retroactively how bad the nut-slobbery was cos i missed most of it. my personal experience? i remember someone from HERE recommending it so i went on a DVD spree n happened to find it at KMart. then the dro/M&M fest happened lol. and no being in a 'dark place' (i wasnt really) wasn't the only reason. i prefaced my reply like that not as an excuse due to ur opinion on it apparently being unversal and u requiring it to be embraced by all, but really SIMPLY stating the circumstances surrounding how i saw it. it has an impact, but i guess i shoulda also firmly state that Oldboy is/was a goodass movie. not my fav outta the revenge trilogy, but a standout nonetheless.

>The twists were pretentious and I've seen better violence

a. no, they werent.
b. you probly haven't.

>The hammer scene? You guys kidding me? That was sillier

cept that it's a dude takin on a whole buncha other dudes with nuthn but a hammer in his hand and then (halfway thru) a knife in his back? lol if u can suspend belief for any other flick, whats so hard bout doing it for the hammer scene? its already cool on its own as "the hammer scene", it doesn't need ur nut-slobbery argument to talk it down. it exists fine on its own even if ur argument stands.

>the hammer

man ive watched that moofie almost ten times since then. i was trying to understand where ur coming from but considering it's one of the scenes that's often highlighted as standing out in the flick, its kind of an easy target. but you'd be the first person i've ever come across to not like the hammer scene or even the whole entire movie. and ur making some pretty sweeping broad statements bout it that doesnt entirely track.

>>it's a pretty straight forward flick in terms of what's

it's a pretty safe bet Spike's version will not be an Asian flick. it'll be whatever the hell it ends up being. but what happens if Spike ends up transposing the hammer scene to his version? how could he make that scene work well enough to satisfy u? (honest Q).

and i do respect ur opinion on flicks too btw, spesh after that epic Dark Knight Rises poast where u n a few others wen HAM in it. n i had to watch it again to see that ye, it did suck hairy manbat balls. so im not beyond changing my opinion if u or someone else gives me compelling enuff reasons, im just not seeing it with Oldboy. despite watever accusations u got towards it, i can still sit n watch it n still have the same kinda reactions i did years ago. shit still holds up. nuthn more to say really i think...?

very elegant and beautiful film, all things considered. i, too, am curious how spike's version of oldboy turns out but not enough to support it at the box office, which is still more than i muster for most american remakes of asian horror films. after a while i just stopped watching them.

Old Boy is the most striking film (if you ain't go "OH SHIT" at the reveal, I dunno what to tell you)
Mr V is the most human/str8 forward and darkest film
Lady V is the best all-around, and the one I would have expected a remake of first, TBH.

But most of the people I've talked to on this are preemptively writing it off and shitting on Spike.

That's bullshit.

That's also why I'm making the conscious decision to NOT watch the O.G. before I see Spike's so as to not color my impression of it.

I think he CAN do a better job, but it ain't gon be easy. I actully LOVE this flick.

The plot, absurd as it may be, is good! It's a lot of fun and really catches you by surprise. The mistake I think a lot of ppl make is trying to elevate this higher than it deserves, this isn't GREAT film making. It's a fun VERY edgy popcorn flick. I admit a LOT of the appeal likely comes from the subject matter that is SO different from what one could expect in an American flick.

OE has positioned this such that if you like the remake then you have terrible taste because it was a messy, panicky, amateurish piece of dogshit.

If you happen to hate it then you are a damn dirty hipster who has an agenda against Spike.

I haven't figured out his angle for if people are indifferent on it yet but I'm sure it's there.

Nah. Didn't like, say anything close to this

You can like the remake if its good

I think Spike's best strategy is to make the remake
nothing like the original because the original is dogshit

>If you happen to hate it then you are a damn dirty hipster who

Nah, if its bad, its bad. But if you hate it for "not being
like the original" you have terrible taste

But people have already decided to hate it

Just watched this again the other day, it's entertaining, different, emotionally challenging, well made, and well acted.

I expect to like Spike's version too.

In response to Reply # 55

he wanted the violence to be realistic, but not gratuitous (& cartoonish).
The battle scene has 3 floors of fighting instead of just one.
Also, I wonder how Spike shot the scene of the father fucking his daughter. Spike's sex scenes always seem to leave a lasting impression on me. Like in S.O.S. and He Got Game.

outside of the hall way fight scene and some of the surreal imagery, this shit was turrbl

as the twist gets slowly revealed... my god it just makes it worst. what a stupid fucn impetus for revenge

finally watching this, i don't want to see Spike's remake, because if he actually re-writes and makes the twist more plausible The Art House Brigade gunna cry. if he leaves the story in tact, it's still a silly childish exercise in revenge narrative

i want those two hours of my life back

I might even agree, when I get around to seeing it. Spike almost always lacks a sense of humor, anyway. He's too dry and serious.

Hipsters are making shit up, as expected

Here's the truth: Spike can't win, because the original movie was
terrible.

If he makes it like the original, it'll be bad because the original is bad

If he veers too much from the original, it'll be bad because he made it
not like the original

best movie of the aughts.
Hipsters love 25th Hour (and even Summer of Sam).
I'm not sure if Chan-Wook intended for a hipster audience, but Spike can appeal to hipsters as well, evident by 25th Hour.
Oldboy was far from boring, even if I don't desire to ever watch it again.
I'll arrive to my own conclusion when I see this.

(Btw, have u seen She Hate Me, Girl 6, or Bamboozled? Sheesh. It was clear then that Spike isn't capable of effectively blending humor with dark subject matter).

Bamboozled was one of the best ironic humor-not-fucking-funny
movies ever made...it created some of the most uncomfortable
movie environments ever, with white people (liberal ones)
laughing at the wrong scenes...all that shit was intentional

Yes, he is.

saw it on the big screen tonight; hadn't seen this since I first rented it off Netflix on DVD

but knowing the whole premise from the start, it held up to me

mainly because Choi Min-sik is incredible -- he embodied the tortured agony and rage of revenge so viscerally, in every single scene

noticed so many scenes are shot from Choi's POV or the POV of what Choi is looking at; great stylistic choice by Park as it heightens the discovery and emotions the character goes through

definitely felt the campiness come through more this time, not being as focused on the details of the narrative

when I first watched this trilogy I came away thinking Lady Vengeance is the best movie of the three, so I'll have to revisit that one as well
