>I'll translate this in Latte-ese- > >So basically no matter how shitty a movie is, you can still >like it if you're in the state of mind to like something >about it. Cool. That's certainly true. Has nothing to do with >the almost universal praise heaped upon 'Oldboy' by arthouse >guys.
well, i mean i was only slightly witness to the arthouse praise, but i dont really mess with movie reviews or anything outside of a few websites (mainly PTP as of the last 5-6yrs). just wanted to give my take cos who knows the many reasons ppl can give for digging it (all of which im sure you'll shut down).
>So- > >There was nothing good about 'Oldboy' but that its "dark" >and foreign. You were feeling dark and down-and-out when it >dropped, so you liked the darkness. > >Ok. > >I mean, there's porn I have a closer connection to than >'Godfather' because some of the "actresses" look like >women I've fucked.
tis the best kind of porn there is.
>The thing is this: > >We're adults -- its time we teased these things apart >and form some real opinions on stuff. > >Because these juvenile hyper-emotional ways to respond >to art aren't pushing the envelope, like, at all.
yeah probly, but i've always approached 'art' chiefly from the emotional POV first cos as much u can argue it away as juvenile, what's the point in recieving a flick purely from a technical standpoint if it wasnt my job to do so? im not a critic or a reviewer or work in the industry, i actively invite films to fuck with my emotions in all sortsa ways cos thats how i can gauge on a personal level wtf i like.
>The reason why good films don't get made is because crackpot >bullshit like 'Oldboy' gets elevated for reasons that have >nothing to do with the actual film.
the story, the mystery, the whys and hows, the constant torture of the main character, the direction, the bla bla bla. clearly ppl will LIKE something about this film that actually happened in the film and it was something they watched themselves. this is still a possibility, right? lol.
>>i thought the film did a lot without pretending to say more >>than what was going on, which was one real roundabout >flipped >>revenge flick in which our protag is on a manufactured path >of >>vengeance. > >Have no idea what this means > >It was a revenge movie > >And a shitty one.
nah wouldnt say its shitty. its SLOW, but not shitty *shrugs*. what i meant was, ur sayn the 'arthouse' latte sippers were on the nuts of this flick just becos (or for no good reason), and i felt it wasnt trying to BE that kinda flick. just saw it as a cool flick telln a twisted story. i have zero thoughts on the original manga or watever the source was cos i never watched/read it. i was basically just saying ur accusation of it is..well for starters, hecka LATE. so its kinda hard to gauge retroactively how bad the nut-slobbery was cos i missed most of it. my personal experience? i remember someone from HERE recommending it so i went on a DVD spree n happened to find it at KMart. then the dro/M&M fest happened lol. and no being in a 'dark place' (i wasnt really) wasn't the only reason. i prefaced my reply like that not as an excuse due to ur opinion on it apparently being unversal and u requiring it to be embraced by all, but really SIMPLY stating the circumstances surrounding how i saw it. it has an impact, but i guess i shoulda also firmly state that Oldboy is/was a goodass movie. not my fav outta the revenge trilogy, but a standout nonetheless.
>The twists were pretentious and I've seen better violence >scenes from film students
a. no, they werent. b. you probly haven't.
>The hammer scene? You guys kidding me? That was sillier >than the scenes in 'Man With The Iron Fist' which was >SUPPOSED to be outright silly > >There was NOTHING good about it. Zero.
cept that it's a dude takin on a whole buncha other dudes with nuthn but a hammer in his hand and then (halfway thru) a knife in his back? lol if u can suspend belief for any other flick, whats so hard bout doing it for the hammer scene? its already cool on its own as "the hammer scene", it doesn't need ur nut-slobbery argument to talk it down. it exists fine on its own even if ur argument stands.
>the hammer >>sequence doesn't completely fall apart on repeat viewings >for >>me but u do kinda sit there and go "well........it's one guy >>with a hammer...them other idiots should've shut him down by >>now". > >Uh...that this requires a discussion tips me off that nobody >actually watched this movie.
man ive watched that moofie almost ten times since then. i was trying to understand where ur coming from but considering it's one of the scenes that's often highlighted as standing out in the flick, its kind of an easy target. but you'd be the first person i've ever come across to not like the hammer scene or even the whole entire movie. and ur making some pretty sweeping broad statements bout it that doesnt entirely track.
>>it's a pretty straight forward flick in terms of what's >going >>on, and it kept me guessing pretty much til the end. > >"Kept you guessing" because you hadn't seen it before and >there was a dumbass pretentious "twist" > >So the fuck what > >Movie was awful
well...yes. and then no..to that last part lol.
>>curious tho if the opinion u got on the film has been the >same >>since it came out? or if this is just a change of opinion >>based on seeing it years later? > >Nah, saw it in pieces before. Had no real opinion. > >Saw it one sitting the other day. > >Now realize this film is just the beneficiary of an arthouse >PTP-er-like community that fetishizes Asian films and >elevates >them to elite status for absolutely no reason. > >Its an awful film. > >Spike Lee's will probably be about 4000 X better and get >100000X >the criticism for "not living up to the original," when again, >the >original was high school senior play quality
it's a pretty safe bet Spike's version will not be an Asian flick. it'll be whatever the hell it ends up being. but what happens if Spike ends up transposing the hammer scene to his version? how could he make that scene work well enough to satisfy u? (honest Q).
and i do respect ur opinion on flicks too btw, spesh after that epic Dark Knight Rises poast where u n a few others wen HAM in it. n i had to watch it again to see that ye, it did suck hairy manbat balls. so im not beyond changing my opinion if u or someone else gives me compelling enuff reasons, im just not seeing it with Oldboy. despite watever accusations u got towards it, i can still sit n watch it n still have the same kinda reactions i did years ago. shit still holds up. nuthn more to say really i think...?
