"Fast & Furious 6 (Lin, 2013)"

Since the other post is already pushing plat and contains a few spoilers about the series going forward, I thought we should start a new post for tomorrow's midnight release.

Our own bwood has already seen it. His spoiler-free review, from the other post:

"Most ridiculous movie ever. They took the last one and amplified it by 100 to retarted levels. I had fun and niggas is gonna eat this shit up. I sure did. Unfortunately, Universal is gonna fuck us with 7. Instead of waiting for Justin Lin to be ready they get James Wan so we can have 7 by next summer.

Oh, and the rumors are true..."

Anyone else seen it yet?

Instead, it's merely the best so far.

Fastest pace.
Most action.
Plenty of absolutely awesome hand-to-hand combat.
Most one-liners.
Most hilarious barely intelligible grumblings about family.
Perhaps more over-the-top macho posturing than all the other films combined.
Best villain of the bunch too.

While I'm nervous the credits tag might be the equivalent of jumping the shark, perhaps that's just because I'm not sure how the next one can be better. They better find a top-drawer director (though once this flick makes crazy bank, I'm not convinced they won't throw a shitload of money at Lin's feet to bring him back, unless they know they have a superior replacement).

I just saw it this evening.

It was ridiculous, unintentionally hilarious, totally homoerotic and waaaay over the top.

I don't know how they topped Fast Five, but they totally did.

I hope you're right about 7. Justin Lin seems to know the right formula to make these movies work. I trust him for 7, but I don't know how many other directors could juggle all of that goofy testosterone and make it work.

The real joy of these films is that Lin has found an editing pace that stays kinetic with fast cuts, but never so fast that we can't tell what's going on. He also knows precisely when to place a longer shot amidst the chaos.

Is that being done so that the next sequel can get quick turnaround or do they need time to punch up the film for 3D special effects?

6 felt a lot more disjointed to me because of all the movement from set piece to set piece whereas 5 had a more developed arch and location.

Since, let's be honest, no one is truly deeply invested in the emotions of these characters, Fast Five's more cohesive and streamlined arc isn't as big a positive as it would be in most other series (in fact, the Dom/Letty scene in F6 was maybe the closest thing to emotion I've felt in the series... that and the Han relationship, which has always been nicely underplayed).

Plus, Lin is just so good at shooting action that I'm like that girl in the AT&T ad- "we want more, we want more, we really like it, we want more." F5, while it has the fun Vin/Rock dukefest and the bananas safe sequence, doesn't have remotely the sheer volume of action scenes that F6 has. I loved nearly every action scene here, save for the dark night setting. That henchman beating up Han AND Roman while the girls grappled had me GEEKED.

I definitely hear the arc argument... I just think this series has no real need for a streamlined arc. Make it messier in favor of more kinetic asskicking, menace, and posturing.

Like you said above...the perfect mix of kinetic and wide shots. You get the intimate action shots yet never lose sense of the scale (you never get that Bourne 'wtf is actually happening' feeling), he has really mastered that ability. I never have a problem seeing more of his set pieces BUT, similar to MI:4, I felt like 6 was simply an exercise in 'how many can we fit in' rather than there being an arch to tie them together. That's where it fell flat in comparison to 5...the pieces, although spectacular in their own right, didn't fit as well together.

6:5 as 2010 UK: 2010 Duke basketball. Sum is greater than the individual parts.

In response to Reply # 0

..its so ridiculous that i couldn't really say it was good OR bad

its over the top in EVERY aspect

still, its hilarious. no, the script doesn't have a bunch of hilarious punch lines and witty humor. its hilarious because the actors all take themselves seriously, almost as if every line in this film was major.

every move was heavy handed. they might as well use a "wink & nod" after every scene that forecast something down the line.

and the end?

yo, the final action sequence was so completely unbelievable that i found myself ROARIN' with laughter. a team of automobiles bringing down a cargo plane?

without tossin' spoilers, i'll simply say that the twist/reveals for this one make it even funnier.

as much as i wanted to clown this film, i have to admit that as bad as it was, it was STILL fun.

I don't give a fuck if they had The Rock beat up a lion with his bare hands. I'll buy anything they do in the F&F universe.

I choose to believe they could pull allllll that shit off. That level of absurdity is the best thing about it.

It's over the top, laughable, impossible, and everything else ridiculous.

And I loved every minute of it.

Stallone better take notes on this for the next Expendables film, b/c the Lin/Vin combo and company are doing everything nerds and action fans love to see in film. This movie has a universe now. The Fast & Furious universe. It's ridiculously great. I kept thinking, how can they do better with the next one, especially when it drops in a year? And they go and add _____? James Wan better now f*ck it up.

Highly entertaining movie

Better than Fast Five, but barely, as both contained a climactic Stunt-o-Rama sequence that went on far too long

I also liked that the movie played into the "mythology" of the series

And I was actually hoping that Letty's memory would have come completely back by the end of the movie; that would have just added to the schlocky fun

I also agree that Justin Lin knows how to shoot and cut an action sequence; he's become quite the director (btw, who here knew that the character Han was imported from Lin's first film, the really good Better Luck Tomorrow?)

Also, Lin says that technically this movie is supposed to be called Furious 6... Fast Five... Furious 6...

>So my first question for you is, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a serious answer about it, is this the same Han as in Better Luck Tomorrow?

Sung Kang: Yes, it is. Justin and I always… He wanted to keep the anthology going. He was always wondering where the characters go after high school. The Daric Loo character actually went into his film Annapolis, and then in Tokyo Drift we have Virgil too from Better Luck Tomorrow as well.

In response to Reply # 45
Tue May-28-13 12:49 PM by Cold Truth

1. He's "the quiet type" in both movies. We definitely see more of his sense of humor in the last two, but he's hardly a badass in BLT. All four guys basically bluffed their way through that shit. When they ran into some real gangsters, they damn near pissed themselves. The only time he was a "badass" was when he was beating on Virgil for doing something stupid.

2. You do realize BLT was Han in HIGH SCHOOL, right? This is years later. Most people undergo some changes after high school... especially guys involved in that kind of shit. The character is different in ways that appear to be a natural growth and us simply seeing him coming out of his shell, not a completely different guy as you've said.

If you're the same guy you were in high school nearly ten years after high school, you're a rarity.

i didn't try to apply logic to it, it wouldn't make sense to in this series but they don't seem like the same character at all. you don't need to give me a psychological breakdown of why he was the way he was in high school.

>i didn't try to apply logic to it

Well yeah that would be obvious. It's funny since you clearly made an attempt to poke holes in the logic of the two characters being the same, and then when sound logic comes into play you dismiss it.

it wouldn't make sense to
>in this series

Oh, in other words you don't want to actually think it through. That's called a cop out. Yes, it would make sense in any series. You're complaining about how they don't seem like the same guy

>but they don't seem like the same character at
>all.

Except for the logically sound reasons I gave, sure. You tried to poke holes, but those holes don't hold up.

>you don't need to give me a psychological breakdown of
>why he was the way he was in high school.

First, I gave a break down of who he was in high school, not why he was the way he was.

Second, I gave a break down of how people aren't the same people in their late twenties as they are in high school.

Third, I pointed out how he was nothing close to your assertion of a bad ass.

All of these things are true and correct.

OH BUT I DONT WANT ALL THAT!

lol

Look, you were wrong about Han one hundred percent and there's nothing wrong with that. There's also nothing for me to "settle down" in my response, so I dunno where that came from aside from you simply being grumpy that you really didn't have a valid point.

way over the top but thats par for the course with this series. Fun movie! Not as solid as Fast 5 but still enjoyable. And set up Fast 7 perfectly. How can they top this in 7? Take down a Space Shuttle? lol

go the "Rocky Balboa" route and really scale it back to the roots of the original. Make it more about the cars/racing and less about the over the top super human stunts.

That's the worst thing they could possibly do.

They need to continue this trajectory exactly as it's been. Going back to the first would be fine in small, subtle ways, but placing any significant emphasis on street racing and getting away from the over the top action and fighting we've seen these last couple of rounds would be a huge step backwards in every way imagineable- up to and including financially.

These last two basically nuked the genre with both the "how" and the "what". It was unbelievably well executed in both movies, and they tightened things up considerably in 6.

It's going to be tough to find 10 movies that hit this level of ambition+execution. After that plane scene and the shit with the tank, what the fuck else is there? The two scenes with Letty and the rogue cop were among the best American fight scenes in recent memory, and all of the fight scenes were well done.

In case we all forgot Bryan was a badass in a fight, we were strongly reminded. Dwayne and Vin forming the Road Warriors and putting Brock Lesnar's big brother in the Doomsday Device was a geek out moment like no other. Watching Han and Rome get their ass handed to them was great as well. The last time I had that much fun watching the heroes get fucked up was in Lethal Weapon 4.

my favorite chick. *le sigh*

this movie was ridiculously corny entertaining. excellent action movie, as all of the Fast & Furious films have been. everyone seems to die at least once or twice, or just have the best of luck. lol.

i didn't think a 7th movie would be necessary (and it isn't of course), but they keep coming up with the bait to keep us all hooked. i like jason statham and i'm curious to see what kind of character he'll be and what chemistry he brings to the film.

its 50/50 though. they didn't really develop her character a whole lot, although most of the women in this franchise have this problem, except for letty and mia.

i would LOVE to see giselle come back from the dead or whatever happened to her.

I will say that Paul Walker going to jail to meet Braga moment probably could have just been dumped. A nice call back to some old characters but it was a LOT of stupid for very little purpose. I had to laugh at how he beat up some people in solitary and then somehow was out of jail the next day.

I loved how they tied in Tokyo Drift and Statham being after them should be great; can't wait for 7.

Recipe for success:

1. Strike a deal with Paramount for a crossover.

2. Kill, or at least incapacitate, Michael Bay during production.

4. Let Lin direct.

3. Give each F&F member their own Transformer buddy car. I don't care who gets what, except Ironside comes back and he's paired up with Rock.

Beyond that, who gives a fuck about the details. So long as Lin ran this show it would be the single greatest thing in the history of things.

We already know what and where he came from. See Better Luck Tomorrow. We don't need every detail of every interaction he ever had with Yakuza for the TD story to fit into the rest of these.

And unless that took place a decade before 4, it's difficult to bridge that gap. Hopefully (likely) Han's death and explanation of who was driving that car is the last time we'll really be brought into the Tokyo Drift world, though I'm sure there could be a Bow Wow run in if the gang goes there for "clues" or some shit; that dude still looks the same age.

We don't need to see his Yakuza connection happen. That's of zero importance. None. Nada. If they give us an inkling of that connection in 7, great. If not, who gives a fuck?

This the wrong movie to fret over minor details of a secondary character who won't even be in the next one.

expected and I'm a F&F stan so I loved every minute and can't wait to see 7.

During Vin's one big stunt it was so crazy my friends I simutaneously yelled out "Bullshit!" at the screen and were laughing our asses off but we still loved it.

The grand finale is riduculously crazy and over the top too but if you go to a movie like this expecting to take it seriously you probably shouldn't been there.

It still had some great racing scenes and some great fight scenes also.

The teaser at the end for F&F7 left me saying "Oh shit!"

damn that sucks...dude really has the formula locked down for this franchise. i wish him nothing but success but damn, these last two have been so good i'm kind of sad to hear he's not going to be at the helm anymore.

that's a damn shame...although i'm sure he's moving on to bigger and better things (i hope anyway). now it kind of makes sense that they are sealing up Han's storyline with this one and going full circle.

Also, you expect the marketing people to ignore the largest setpiece in the whole film?

Do you expect the commercials for Die Hard to ignore the "jumping off of the roof with the explosion" shot to mitigate the risk of ruining the scene?

Nah. That shit was still awesome.

They didn't necessarily need to show the car coming out but that really was the money shot of the trailer and got the biggest reactions from audiences.

And given the huge success that the film's had, I doubt anyone at the studio is second guessing the decision.
