Licensed comic from kaboom! based on a cartoon I've never seen from the creator of Adventure Time which I've rarely seen. In other words, not what I considered to be "my lane"... HOWEVER. This shit rocked me in a really fun and unexpected way. When the first issue kicked off it was a little random/cutesy for my taste but I was digging the art so I stuck with it. As I read on (the first 4 issues comprise a story arc) the story started to come together and the humor began to click with me. It's actually pretty hilarious. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

I guess the sensibility is somewhat similar to Adventure Time, but definitely for an older crowd and more sci-fi. I'm not saying get it for your kids, but get it for yourself if you're looking for a good time.

A+

It's all here. The pulpy, sci-fi sensibility. The balls to the wall action. The quasi-sadist approach to character development. It's Rick Remender's mission statement.

And I had no idea Opeña worked on this book! I'd pick up a few issues here and there but they were always drawn by Tony Moore. Who ain't no slouch either. The book looks amazing. Can't wait to dig deeper into it.

Had to catch up on this before we hit up the Renaissance Faire tomorrow for Mother's Day (had to take advantage of that Wench's Weekend Special discount, natch) and YE GODS, is this the best book Marvel's putting out right now?! They're pumping out a couple jams that make me think that every time I put down an issue, but for the moment at least, GODBOMB just took the lead. To quote one of my favorite comic scholars, "just fucking metal everywhere."

The 3 Thors
The Goddesses of Thunder (Had a hunch Aaron was building to some Thor offspring at some point, definitely didn't expect it to go down like this)

18. "So, have we talked "Jack Kirby DC Omnibus Vol. 2" on here?"
In response to Reply # 0

Can't remember. I did just cop it though. It's interesting: it's all the various odds and ends that he did for DC through the late '70s and the into the mid '80s. Everything that wasn't his directly New Gods-related stuff, Kamandi, The Demon, or OMAC.

It's interesting. Some of it is really old stuff he did in the '40s/'50s reprinted in the '70s. A couple of old Sandman issues, a couple of "First Issues!" A few covers. Some of the stuff he didn't even write, just draw.

Which brings me to the real prize of the collection: The two Kirby-drawn "Super Powers" mini-series. These were two mini-series that were tie-ins to the "Super Powers" toy-line from the mid '80s. I bought the second one when it dropped; it was probably the first DC series that I ever collected. I didn't even know Kirby drew it until now; but I do remember that it dropped every other month (I guess they were giving the king a long leash). Him doing the art makes sense, since the villains are Darkseid and his crew. I remember reading in the final New Gods omnibus that Kirby was told he couldn't resolve the storyline, since they were launching a toy line. A bunch of the villains got major character re-designs, but again, I didn't know Kirby was responsible for re-designing them.

None of the stories are essential top-tier Kirby; he was in the decline of his career, but, if nothing else, the "Super Powers" stuff holds a lot of nostalgia value.

and In The Days of the Mob: http://www.amazon.com/In-Days-Mob-Jack-Kirby/dp/1401240798/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368458757&sr=8-1&keywords=kirby+in+the+days+of+the+mob

I'd never heard of either of these until the HC's dropped recently. Anyone read them?

Probably my next order of business Kirby-wise is gonna be finishing up the Fourth World Saga and then maybe checking out Kamandi finally

it's a lot like Super Spy in that various aspects of it that make up little vignettes tell a whole story. Layers, and all that. But man, it's weird - it's not hard to figure out who the villain is by about halfway through, but it's never really made clear WHY the villain's turned heel, or to what end - until the end, which is pretty devastating. Kindt's a master at making me laugh, then turning around and making me feel bad.

A+ as usual on this guy's creator-owned stuff

46. "REGULAR SHOW #1"
In response to Reply # 0
Thu May-16-13 01:11 AM by buckshot defunct

The comic I was hyped for before I had any idea it would one day actually exist.

I gotta hand it to kaBOOM, they're putting some great talent on these licensed books and the results have been pretty special. It helps that the shows these comics are based on are pretty magical in their own right, but I still find myself impressed with how well all that is getting translated to the page. And not just translated, but built on to an extent. The back-up story in this first issue has a style and voice all its own yet still feels at home in the Regular Show world.

As for the main story? It did what it had to do, and that was to feel like an episode of Regular Show. Did it feel like a *great* episode? Not exactly. I think the joke factor was pretty much on point in terms of frequency and tone but I didn't really need this to end on a cliffhanger. Buuuut I thought that about the last couple of kaBOOM books I read and the arcs turned out to be really enjoyable, despite my ideas of how a kids' comic* should be paced.

B

*And Regular Show isn't exactly for "kids" - My 12 and 13 year old nephews put me onto it and it's pretty much targeted at that age. Think 'Beavis and Butthead Lite' and don't hand this to any 2nd graders probably.

And it's odd because I read KC Green's webcomic (http://gunshowcomic.com/) and the dude is like a maniac joke machine genius. Regular Show has a more subdued vibe but even still, I felt it could've moved a little quicker.

But it was still good enough for me to stick around for sure

a lot of the 'kids' books I've picked up on whims have been great - Fraggle Rock, Muppets, etc. I got Sesame Street a couple weeks ago and my 2 year old loved it. She pretty much just pointed at the characters and said "Grover! Sad!" but it was really well put together. It had all the major characters - even Murray and Telly!

Makes me want to go check out some of those Labyrinth and Dark Crystal joints they put out.

And yeah, they're solid. His Popeye is really good, too. Like, he might be my second favorite Popeye artist/writer behind EC Segar. And before that I didn't have a second favorite, I just figured no one else should be doing Popeye comics. It's that good.

And Bravest Warriors which I mentioned above, I'm really digging that one now too.

Lots of good kids/all ages comics out right now.

are a bit too young as yet.

Soon as they learn who the Walrus & the Carpenter are, though, go for it. I thought my daughter, who'd just turned 5 when we started reading it, was waaaay too young, but it's her favorite comic ever. (And one of mine. And my boy's, though he's gone hard for Mouse Guard recently.)

I know I've suggested Tiny Titans to both of you... I think kids are ready by around 3. I'd also recommend picking up all of the Superman Family Adventures, too... no idea why DC killed it (or Tiny Titans prior) but it was pretty great. I mean, Aquamman has these amazing sideburns in it... and here's Aquaman vs Darkseid from the series finale:

I ran a few errands after hitting the shop. I suspect it was the pharmacy - typically I have a 15 minute wait there, so took my books in, but my prescription was ready immediately and I suspect that in my surprise I dropped them.

Yes, I'm highly annoyed.

the real tragedy is the upcoming camping trip with the Cub Scouts this wkd.

8 year olds, at least half of whom have ADHD, with BB guns? Fortunately I believe I'm assigned to Firewood Collection during that activity.

Y'know when I'm not excited about the campfire songs, something's wrong with the organization.

(not a judgmental statement, I've done it, and hell, my wife used to be a card-carrying PETA member.)

>So far, I've grilled up burgers, dogs, chicken, kielbasa,
>clams, asparagus, brussel sprouts, zuchini, squash, corn on
>the cob, and sausage. Yup.

sounds like a good round of starters. Assuming you just threw most of this stuff on the grill.

Need to know though: Charcoal or gas? Gas is pretty straightforward, but I've been working on my charcoal technique and can offer some pointers if you're on that side of the park.

Regardless, next step is to work on your seasonings. I'm not as big a fan of stuffing fish, though if you do have a whole fish, that's a great way to do it - you can use onions, fennel, rosemary, citrus, whatever.

Dry rubs: I always throw some on anything that I'll serve with barbecue sauce - chicken breasts & ribs, mostly, but you can use it with anything. There are commercial rubs available, but I make my own with whatever spices I have on hand. Basic format for me is: a lot of paprika, about half as much cinnamon, about 1/4 as much dry mustard, and then some salt, sugar, pepper, heat (cayenne, chipotle, ancho) to taste, ground coriander & cumin, dried oregano and basil, garlic powder, onion powder, hmmmmmm maybe a pinch of cardamom if you're feeling adventurous, definitely some anise seed, etc. etc. Then as far ahead as you can, put what you're cooking in a tupperware, add a bunch of the rub, cover, and shake to coat. Then stick it in the fridge until you're ready to cook. Grill, and either serve with sauce on the side or just sauce it last 10 minutes of cooking, depending on your preference.

Marinades & Sauces:
1) I use a honey mustard with salmon, sockeye, char and other orange-flesh fishes. Start with a lot of a good grainy mustard. Stir in some honey and some citrus (lime juice pref., but OJ is also good and a bit sweeter), and a good bit of olive oil. Marinade your fish in it for 20 minutes or more before grilling.

2) I used to grill a lot of white and red fish with a quasi-teriyaki marinade: soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, citrus, and honey. Tasty. Don't overcook the fish, even if you don't want it rare on the inside.

3) one of the most popular things I grill is a boneless leg of lamb. I cut it in a rough butterfly (so that it'll lie flat). For marinade, I use olive oil, honey, fresh mint (dried will do if necessary), rosemary, lots of garlic, lime juice or OJ, salt and lots of ground black pepper. I let it soak in that overnight in the fridge. For grilling, fat side down on a very hot grill to sear, then turn it down... and if you grill it right you don't even need to turn it, but I usually do. Cooking time is usually about 30 minutes depending on how how I have the grill. I serve it rare (though my haphazard butterflying leaves it in various states of doneness, since my wife likes medium and my pop likes well done) with mint jelly, salt and pepper.
I have a picture of our Easter leg of lamb on my phone... I'll se if I can get it uploaded! It's pretty bloody, though.

Good luck!

I have a propane grill - 4-burner. I like it a lot so far.

I haven't done anything advanced yet. I am still new to meat so I don't know a lot about prepping them. I have been eyeing the lamb at Whole Foods but I was never sure what to do with it.

I grabbed two NY Strips and I'm going to try my first dry rub this weekend. Letting it "sit" overnight.

I also got stuff to make s'mores for the little one.

I got a couple prepared duck breasts too, which seems like something else I should be dry rubbing or marinating?

I like doing the leg best, bht chops can also be great with minimal prep.

Hmm, I don't know that dry rubbing a steak is a great idea. Typically a dry rub is for something that's going to be cooking longer... With good quality steaks, I think you're going to be best off treating it with A little salt n pepper and then grilling that sucker over high heat for two or three minutes a side, depending on thickness. Don't want a strip steak coming out like a brisket.

>I got a couple prepared duck breasts too, which seems like

I only grilled duck for the first time last wkd, but I've always loved it in restaurants. Weird thing about duck is you pretty much want to treat it like a steak - high heat, sear the fat side, then turn heat down. Even though it's a bird, you want it rare to medium rare (red to pink). Again, you don't need much seasoning, but if you want to make a marinade or reduction that might work well too.

Hmm, there are tons of sites online about steak dry rubs. Isn't that what they do at steakhouses?

I'm a little nervous about the duck...lots of sites seem to be talking about 'rendering' the fat and I kind of bought this on a whim because I've loved the duck (and lamb) I've had on restaurants.

Ever grilled goat? Do you grill in the winter?

not really... I think most use salt and pepper and then broil or grill them, Pretty simple. Maybe serve with a little rendered butter on top.

I've never thought much about rubbing steaks, but I think this article pretty much captures my own views:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/22/dining/22mini.html?_r=0

>I'm a little nervous about the duck...lots of sites seem to be
>talking about 'rendering' the fat and I kind of bought this on

Duck breast fat is delicious... I always eat it when I get duck in restaurants. I don't see any need to render the fat unless you're going to use it to fry something in later.

Remember 2 things:
-in a lot of grilled meats, fat adds flavor. The leaner the meat, hte less flavor. So even if you trim the duck fat off after it's cooked, having it on there while it's cooking will add flavor to the rather lean breast meat.
-a lot of experts feel that when you're grilling something, a lot of the smoky flavor in the crust (especially when you're not using charcoal) comes from melting fat or meat juice hitting the hot element and vaporizing. That's why I'm a big believer in putting the fat side down over high heat and really searing it.

>Ever grilled goat?

Nope, not once. I've only ever had goat in Indian restaurants and I've never been thrilled by it.... not sure I shop anywhere that butchers it, either.

>Do you grill in the winter?

All the time. No reason not to. Biggest problem is finding places that stock charcoal between November and April, so I usually try to stock up on a few bags in September to get me through the winter.

All in all though, with 2 working parents and 3 fussy-eating kids and the added time charcoal takes (15-20 to get the grill hot, plus i'm a very slow cooker in general), I just don't grill as often as I used to. Still love it though.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhkkk this comic is gorgeous. Love the world Martin is designing. Makes me want to set fire to my Wacom and never draw again, but in a good way.

Writing wise, it's more or less a standard detective story, but the good thing about those is even the "normal" ones have plenty of twist and turns. And being that it's BKV and it's set in this crazy futuristic world, it's safe to say my brain will explode eventually.

If anybody here is still on the fence about digital comics, let this be the one that breaks you in
