"Amazon Has all of it's pilots online. Who's watching?"

http://www.deadline.com/2013/04/amazon-studios-puts-its-14-pilots-online/

Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1001155581

As broadcast networks are moving onto screening their pilots for next season, Amazon Studios too is kicking off its pilot screening process. But unlike the traditional TV networks’ pilot screenings, which are shrouded in secrecy, Amazon brass are doing theirs out in the open. The company this morning has unveiled its inaugural slate of 14 pilots — eight comedies and six kids shows. All have been made available for free on Amazon Instant Video, LoveFilm UK and LoveFilm Germany. Viewers are being invited to watch the pilots and review them on the site.

There will be “a lot of data points” in Amazon’s decision-making process as to which pilots will be picked up to series,” said Amazon Studios director Roy Price. Amazon will count how many people watched each pilot, how many watched each pilot from start to finish and how many shared it on social media. Additionally, the company will evaluate feedback from an online panel recruited on Amazon preview as well as traditional offline focus groups.
The analysis will be both quantitative and qualitative. For instance, a pilot that gets a lot of “likes” but the vast majority of people like it, don’t love it, won’t score as high as a pilot that has fewer fans but they all love it as a passionate fan base is key to the success of online series. Amazon brass have not decided yet how many half-hour pilots they will pick up to series, with the orders likely to be around 13 episodes each. The launch date for Amazon’s first original scripted series also is TBD. Meanwhile, the company has quietly started to develop drama series to add to its portfolio of comedy and kids programs.

Amazon’s comedy pilots available for viewing as of today include Alpha House, starring John Goodman with cameos by Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert; musical Browsers starring Bebe Neuwirth; Onion News Empire, starring Jeffrey Tambor; Those Who Can’t, which was submitted though Amazon Studios’ website; Dark Minions, written by Big Bang Theory co-stars Kevin Sussman and John Ross Bowie; animated comedy Supanatural; Betas, starring Ed Begley Jr and Jon Daly; and Zombieland, based on the hit feature.

Casting was the biggest problem as I didn't care for the two guys but overall it just wasn't that funny and seemed just like another low rent zombie production.

There's an initial jolt if you're expecting the original cast (or lookalikes, which I think would've been way weirder than re-casting), and some of the beats are admittedly sitcommy and "obvious pilot" material. However, I really liked the new Tallahassee, my friend certainly does faux-Eisenberg well (he's like that in real life, so it's not a huge stretch), and I like the general direction the show seems to be going in. Plus, the zombie kill of the week totally ruled. I'd tune in. But admittedly, I'm very biased.

It's decent and I agree with Longo on the recasting, way better than getting lookalikes. It reminds me of something that USA would've aired back when it had Weird Science on the air. It was laugh out loud funny but it had its few moments of humor and charm. Its something that I could see doing ok on Scifi.

I plan on watching the other sitcoms over the weekend, I'm really excited for the John Goodman one.

From Best-to-Worst: (I didn't watch the animated one that wasn't finished yet.)

1. Onion News Empire: Far and away the best of the pilots as the production value was top notch, the writing was great, and it has an impressive cast. That being said, I have no idea how they can really keep this up for the long term since it has almost no grounding in reality. If it wants any chance to make it, I think Aja Naomi King has to be the lead because she was really the only one you could root for. While I liked the pilot, it (like all of the pilots) didn't feel like a show that I would tune into every week.

2. Betas: Another great cast and I liked the fact that it was the most grounded of the pilots, with some nice dramatic elements mixed into the comedy. I got a little nervous when I saw Joe Dinicol since I found him to be beyond annoying in The L.A. Complex but he was solid here. Jonathan Daly is always funny. This felt the most like a fully formed TV show.

3. Alpha House: I guess my main issue was that they seemed to skip a step because they didn't explain why the guys were living together or why they needed a fourth roommate, especially since there's only three bedrooms. To be honest, the entire show was kind of a mess structurally with storylines popping up out of nowhere, things like the filibuster just appearing because it seemed like something to do but served little-to-no purpose overall. The gay guy's opposition just kind of popped up but then the Colbert scene was over the credits. It was just very sloppy although the cast is so strong and it has Gary Trudeau behind it so you'd have to give it a few episodes more to see where it goes.

4. Zombieland - This felt like a straight-to-DVD version of the film that didn't know whether it wanted to be a sequel or its own film. For instance, when the show started, I thought it would be different because I really didn't see Woody Harrelson's character as someone who served coffee and sandwiches at an office building. On the other hand, the relationship between Not-Jesse and Not-Emma relied completely on the first film because we never saw them get alone and I didn't think the two actors had much chemistry together. I also though the film did a better job of mixing SOME horror into the mix. This was 100% comedy. I also thought the introduction of the rules was incredibly hamfisted and needs to be worked out in future episodes (which there definitely will be; I can't imagine they don't pick this one up since it's the biggest draw of all of them.)

5. Those Who Can't: This had some funny jokes but it felt like a student project and the tatted up guy was incredibly annoying. I thought the bearded guy was the best and I could see a show revolving around him, with the other guys being featured less but that doesn't seem to be the direction their heading in. It's trying to be a mix of Almost Sunny and Bad Teacher but doesn't get there.

6. Browsers: I liked the lead girl but beyond that it was pretty boring and the musical numbers made it borderline unwatchable.

7. Supa Natural: I couldn't make it through this one. Too annoying.

The characterizations by the new actors for the characters are spot on, and this show could work. But I can't help but miss the original actors, they should have just done a Zombieland 2 movie. I'd probably still dabble.

I'm surprised they didn't at least give Zombieland a shot, even though I wasn't impressed by the pilot. Although there's some talk that it wasn't a low budget as it looked.

Browsers was horrible. No surprise there.

From Vulture: "Our Zombieland series will not be moving forward on Amazon," tweeted writer/producer Rhett Reese (he also wrote the 2009 movie), before telling the world exactly how he feels: "Sad for everyone involved. I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence. Anyway, we did our best, and we're very proud of our team." The film did a better job summing up the world in the first 5 minutes than the pilot did in...the whole thing. Add to that the lack of giving a shit about any of the characters and now you've got a recipe for disaster. Zombieland as a series could have been great, but this was NOT a well written pilot.

In response to Reply # 0

Three of the kids shows made it by The Onion News Empire fails to make the cut. I'm kind of surprised by that but, at the same time, I could see that show being pricy and if Amazon was only going to grab one bigger budgeted comedy, Alpha House seems a bit better.

I liked Betas but this seems more in line with Hulu's solid but not that great new material than Netflix.

I'm sure if these fail, Amazon will blame crowdsourcing but, really, it was their people who failed since none of the pilots they ordered were that impressive.

Amazon's first foray into comedy was pretty much a miss. Neither Alpha House nor Betas garnered much attention nor did either really deserve it. I liked the Betas pilot but it got tired after three episodes. Amazon has moved mostly to drama and brought the big guns this time, most notably the return of The X-Files Chris Carter.

http://www.indiewire.com/article/television/watch-the-pilot-for-chris-carters-new-drama-the-after-and-other-amazon-originals

Bosch

Based on Michael Connelly's best-selling Harry Bosch series and written by Eric Overmyer and Michael Connelly, drama pilot Bosch follows a relentless LAPD homicide detective as he pursues the killer of a 13-year-old boy while standing trial in federal court on accusations that he murdered a suspected serial killer in cold blood. Bosch is played by Titus Welliver (Argo, The Good Wife) and stars Annie Wersching, Amy Price-Francis and Jamie Hector. Henrik Bastin of Fabrik Entertainment (The Killing) produced and Jim McKay directed the pilot.

The After

Written and directed by Emmy-nominee Chris Carter (The X-Files) executive produced by Marc Rosen of Georgeville Television and produced by Gabe Rotter, The After follows eight strangers who are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world that defies explanation. Aldis Hodge, Andrew Howard, Arielle Kebbel,Jamie Kennedy, Sharon Lawrence, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Adrian Pasdar, and Louise Monot star in the pilot.

Mozart in the Jungle

Dramatic comedy, Mozart in the Jungle was written by Oscar-nominated writer and director Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited), actor and musician Jason Schwartzman (Saving Mr. Banks, Moonrise Kingdom, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and Tony-nominated writer and director Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher). The project is based on the memoir Mozart in the Jungle by Blair Tindall. Mozart in the Jungle is all about sex, drugs—and classical music—and shows that what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens on stage. Paul Weitz (About a Boy, Admission) directed the pilot and executive produced. Gael Garcia Bernal, Saffron Burrows, Lola Kirke, Malcom McDowell, Bernadette Peters and Peter Vack star.

Transparent

Written and directed by Emmy-nominee and 2013 Sundance Best Director winner Jill Soloway (Afternoon Delight, Six Feet Under and United States of Tara), Transparent is a darkly comedic story about an LA family with serious boundary issues. In this exploration of sex, memory, gender and legacy, the past and future unravel when a dramatic admission causes everyone's secrets to spill out. Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass star in the pilot.

The Rebels

Written by Jeremy Garelick and Jon Weinbach, sports comedy The Rebels follows Julie Levine (Natalie Zea) after her husband suddenly dies and leaves her as the sole owner of a pro-football team. The Rebels creative team also includes executive producer, Matt Alvarez (Ride Along), musician and actor Ice Cube and Michael Strahan, former football player for the New York Giants and host of Live with Kelly and Michael.

Amazon's also put five children's show pilots online -- "Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street," "Hardboiled Eggheads," "The Jo B. & G. Raff Show," "Maker Shack Agency" and "Wishenpoof!" "Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street," written by first-time writer David Anaxagoras, is the first pilot that was discovered through Amazon Studios’ open-door submission process.

I mean immediately become a player in original premium content? When most films and television series fail coming from established studios, to think a newbie like Netflix's would do so well out the gate is amazing.

hmm..if anything, Netflix gave its show creators free rein (relatively speaking) to put out the show/vision they wanted to.

Beau Willimon (House of Cards) said he had minimal notes from netflix and even the process of how he wrote the first season.

And the same can be said for Jenji Kohan, and the creators of Lillyhammer, Hemlock Grove and now Sense8 (The Wachiowski's) and the show coming from the Damages creators.

I mean, high quality content from writers who aren't micromanaged etc. I would think that adds to all of what you said above.

I personally don't think Amazon is ready for this market, Amazon Video is already to difficult to navigate as a viewer which to me shows they don't have all their ducks in a row. Not having a streamlined system can turn potential viewers off Trying to fit all these shows together and push them all out so quickly is an issue too.

i'm not that familiar with using amazon VOD and don't have prime. i remember trying to add these pilots last year to my video library, but they never would appear despite being free to all amazon customers. (the workaround was to add them to my watchlist.) i just didn't find the setup intuitive, and i think being a prime member, to see a whole season of these shows as they go up episode by episode, is a bigger money and time commitment than a (free trial) month of netflix streaming. besides that, all the insider creative stuff above.

I mean, how do you not at least have a queue or wish list. Even HBO GO has something like that.

Amazon is dropping a ton of money on content but seriously needs to redevelop their site when it comes to video.

very true, and in the case of Willimon, went with someone who was an unproved raw talent in writing for TV.

he's a solid playright and one of his plays was adapted into The Ides of March.

But, netflix took a chance and won with him.

it's no different than how USA, F/X, SyFy, etc. the smaller cable nets will take chances on unproved writers who are talented.

but, yea, Netflix went straight to the top and got some of the best writers out there (The Untitled pilot from the Damages creators...*hot fiyah*) and allowed them to craft fantastic shows.

Hemlock Grove is straight shit but that's Netflix taking chances also...

and just gave them tons of cash

it's still surprising how well it's worked though, even if you consider hemlock grove a flop (some people like it, oddly enough and it got renewed soooo)

I haven't watched the amazon pilots yet, but the whole push for a pilot season may just be too flawed to attract the same top-notch talent netflix was able to grab.

Insta-Rating: Which of Amazon’s Five New Pilots Might Be Most Worthy of Your Time?

TV
FEBRUARY 6, 2014
by ZACH DIONNE

Amazon has kicked off its second pilot season with five new grown-up shows for you to watch and vote on, including the site’s first two hour-long dramas. (There are also five pilots’ worth of children’s programming.) Five feels like a lot, though, right? Especially when you still haven’t gotten around to checking out Alpha House or Betas? And the Olympics are about to start, plus you’re already rewatching Mad Men and Game of Thrones and The Americans before they all come back, and you’re sleeping like 12 hours a day because winter sucks. So here’s a least-to-most-promising list of Amazon’s new pilots, ranked on a point scale tallied through various categories and weighted by what felt most important in this specific scenario. Most loglines come courtesy of Deadline. (Note: I have not watched anything beyond the first few minutes of these pilots.)

Title: Bosch
Logline: “A relentless LAPD homicide detective … pursues the killer of a 13-year-old boy while standing trial in federal court on accusations that he murdered a suspected serial killer in cold blood.”
Pedigree: Written by Treme cocreator Eric Overmyer (also a former writer and producer for The Wire and Law & Order) and crime novelist Michael Connelly, upon whose Harry Bosch series the pilot is based.
Star Power: Titus Welliver, who had a small but important role on Lost and who also appeared in Argo, and Jamie “Knox on Heroes” Hector. Also Lance Reddick (The Wire, Lost) in a supporting role.
First Few Minutes: Well, it’s a cop show. Definitely a cop show, for sure.
Estimated Chances This Would Feel Fresh in the Long Run: 1/3
Total Score: 10/20

Title: The Rebels
Logline: “Julie is in over her head when her husband suddenly dies, leaving her the owner of a pro football team.”
Pedigree: Written by Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) and Jon Weinbach (30 for 30’s Straight Outta L.A.), with Ice Cube and Michael Strahan as executive producers. The pilot was directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, who did Super Troopers as well as episodes of Arrested Development and Community.
Star Power: Natalie Zea (who was good on the often-not-good Under the Dome last summer) stars alongside a man they call Hayes MacArthur. Also making appearances, however, are Billy Dee Williams, Kurt Fuller, Josh Peck, Michael Strahan, Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson, Howie Long, and Curt Menefee. The sports/culture nexus you’ve been dying for, Grantlanders.
First Few Minutes: That’s the bad news about that whole nexus thing. Not sure this would ever turn into something anyone needs on television or on the Internet. But it’s … zippy?
Estimated Chances This Would Feel Fresh in the Long Run: 3/5
Total Score: 12/20

Title: The After
Logline: “Eight strangers … are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world that defies explanation.”
Pedigree: Written and directed by The X-Files creator Chris Carter.
Star Power: Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue’s Sylvia Costas) and then … Louise Monot? Aldis Hodge? Andrew Howard? Oh, hey, there’s Jamie Kennedy, I guess.
First Few Minutes: Eerie, slick, and expensive-looking. Takes its time getting to whatever the Big Event is, too, which might be promising.
Estimated Chances This Would Feel Fresh in the Long Run: 2/3
Total Score: 13/20

Title: Transparent
Logline: “Transparent is a darkly comedic story about an L.A. family with serious boundary issues. In this exploration of sex, memory, gender and legacy, the past and future unravel when a dramatic admission causes everyone’s secrets to spill out.”
Pedigree: Executive produced, written, and directed by Jill Soloway, who wrote and produced for Six Feet Under and United States of Tara. She won the Sundance Directing Award in 2013 for Afternoon Delight.
Star Power: Jeffrey Tambor and Gaby Hoffmann star, with Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, and Rob Huebel in supporting roles.
First Few Minutes: Looks and sounds and feels very much like an indie movie. Also: breasts, right off the bat!? In a half-hour comedy?! How HBO of you, Amazon!
Estimated Chances This Would Feel Fresh in the Long Run: 2/3
Total Score: 16/20

Title: Mozart in the Jungle
Logline: “Mozart in the Jungle is all about sex, drugs — and classical music — and shows that what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens on stage.”
Pedigree: Paul Weitz (About a Boy, American Pie) directed the pilot and is an executive producer. The script was written by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Tony-nominated writer-director Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).
Star Power: Starring Gael García Bernal and Malcolm McDowell, with a supporting role from Bernadette Peters.
First Few Minutes: Fancy, saucy, and impressive.
Estimated Chances This Would Feel Fresh in the Long Run: 3/3
Total Score: 18/20

And as for the kids’ stuff, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, The Jo B. & G. Raff Show, Maker Shack Agency, and Wishenpoof! all sound equally delightful. Maybe I’m a little partial to the description for Hardboiled Eggheads, about “regular kids and classified special agents correcting the mistakes of science.”

This is the only one of the bunch that sounds remotely intriguing/interesting. It clearly should be on HBO, Showtime or FX.

yea, these Amazon pilots don't inspire me to GET Amazon Prime and want to watch them.

I love the setup and I think the mystery has some potential. But the writing is atrocious. Some things didn't make any sense to me.

MILD SPOILERS

If the power is out and there's chaos, why was that dude guarding the stairway at the hotel? What sense does that make? Why did Sharon Lawrence have the inability to comprehend that the power was out every where? Why is Aldis Hodge playing the stereotypical, foul mouthed convict. I liked dude in "Leverage" and I think it's lazy writing to make the Black guy the convict. And then every other character is written so broadly. Another thing, why is the Latino cop JUST like the Latino cop from "Under the Dome"? They're both inexperienced and have to deal with some apocalyptic event with a bunch of diverse survivors. Finally, when did Jamie Kennedy get so fat? I didn't recognize him at first. I have so many questions. Hopefully, they will work on the writing if this show is picked up

My Grade: C+

-If there are cars and helicopters? Why are people freaking out and staying aimlessly on the street for no reason whatsoever?
-Don't hotel rooms automatically open when there's an emergency?
-The part where they hit the dude on the motorcycle made no sense whatsoever from the time they hit him to the time they escape the mob. The way those events unfold is moronic.
-Old bat , if you're diabetic, why in the hell don't you have insulin( Or a buncha freaking bonbons) in your bag?

Overall I like the tone of the show. It's a pilot, I'll give it a chance. It has a TWD-ish vibe to it that seem interesting.

It's some serious WHITE PEOPLE shit (it has the Bearded Duplass, cmon) but it's got a pretty good cast (Rob Huebel!,) had some awkward laughs and interesting characters. I think I'll give it a shot if it gets picked up.

I'll check out Mozart In The Jungle and maybe The After. The Rebels sounds kinda meh and the only reason I'd watch Bosch is for the two ex-Wire actors.

It was traipsing over familiar territory and took too long to get rolling.

Titus Welliver is one of my favorite "that guy in that thing" actors and I'm sure he can handle this type of work. His tortured character in "Gone Baby Gone" illustrated that.

Along the last 15 minutes when they start to get into the bone examination is when I really became engaged. Sure. He gets wrapped up in a wrongful death beef. Also, it seems as if Bosch survived a horrifically abusive childhood. Then the bones come into play.

However, there was no big risk there. I saw no stakes. Even the wrongful death shooting, Bosch knows he's good to go at one point. There was no driven tension.

The supporting players (Lance Reddick, Valarie Cruz, Jamie Hector, Alan Rosenberg) are really good.

I'd watch the next few episodes of this. They just gotta kick it up a notch or I'll just not care.

i'm out.

Kind of surprised about The After getting picked up but I'm sure they're hoping to get the religious crowd with it.

Bosche was meh but worth a shot. I liked Mozart and Transparent.

But until they improve their site, I think it'll be tough for people to rally around them. It's a mess to navigate and there's no queue. They are kind of wasting money on good content for a bad site.

On the bright side, the Amazon app on my TV was updated and is MUCH improved. They finally have the watchlist on there and it's much easier to find stuff.

On the downside, Amazon's gameplan seems horribly flawed when they are introducing new pilots before releasing the last slate of shows that they picked up. The "What do you think of this? Great! Now wait a year." plan isn't great IMO. They should probably go with the BBC route and pick up three to five shows of the pilots they like and then see what people like.

As for the new shows, Hand of God was hard to get through but it kind of hooked me in the end. I'd give it another show or two based on the cast alone. I'm not a Whit Stillman fan so this shouldn't be a surprise but I thought Cosmopolitans was awful. I wasn't even sure where the jokes were. Hysteria seems like a decent idea for a b-movie but for a TV show, it didn't work. Especially the silly stuff like the tree being right outside of the hospital. Haven't watched Really or the 80's one; not sure if I will.

Still looking forward to some of last season's pilots to become series but not sure when that is happening.

Great cast, and it seems like it's going for something a little more than a hangout show with the various couples. If anything's going to hurt it, it's that Amazon is debuting it right after Married came out on FX. It's got a very similar feeling to that show, but Married is probably better written (although we only have the pilot to judge for Really, so who knows.) Still, this was the one I'd most want to watch a full season of.

Speaking of Married, Paul Reiser's great on Red Oaks (seriously, Paul Reiser is in the middle of a career renaissance.) Pilot was pretty good, but I'm not sure a Caddyshack style snobs vs slobs comedy is going to work in episodic format. I'll check it out if they pick it up, though. Bonus points for not just going for a ton of "boy, things were certainly different before the internet" jokes.

I didn't love The Cosmopolitans. I appreciate what they're doing, and it was gorgeously shot, but none of the characters were even remotely interesting. It's sometimes clever, but not really funny. From the reactions, it seems like how excited you get by hearing the name "Whit Stillman" is directly proportional to how much you'll like this.

Hand of God has an interesting premise, but wow was that ever a bonkers pilot. I don't know how much Ron Perlman growling about vengeance I can take. And that interrogation scene while his daughter in law watched was uncomfortable for all the wrong reasons.

Hysteria seemed good until they introduced the whole social media aspect of the illness/condition/whatever. Again, I might check it out if it gets picked up, but it feels like a lot of "these kids today, with their YouTubes and MyFace and iphones and whatnot."

Looks like Really and The Cosmopolitans are the two lowest rated on Amazon right now, while Hand of God and Red Oaks are the highest.

It felt more like a movie than a TV show (and the original is only four episodes.) The pilot was solid but Amazon's approach makes me just want to watch the original BBC version to see what happens.

Also, I feel like the show spent too much time explaining how the characters' lives are in shambles and not enough time building the world. Having someone waltz in and tell them a key piece of information and then leave was the height of awkward exposition.

It looked amazing and was a solid hour of television but just felt like it was stretched longer than it needed to be. It was a 55 minute first act that probably could have been cut in half. Still, I'd tune back in if it was picked up.

It was ok, but felt like it was trying WAY too hard to be "edgy." It just came off as more unlikable than funny (and not unlikable in the way the characters on Always Sunny are, more like Workaholics when it's at its worst.)

In the early 90's I went cray over Philip K Dick. I *literally* have a copy of every book he published, including many in hardback - which are rare. I mean all of them - no fooling around. (including his letters collections.)

MITHC wasn't my favorite - but it's still very interesting.

I'm going to watch the pilot and report back.

I was surprised by how watchable Cocked and Down Dog were.

Not really sure what to make of Mad Dogs, though.

Also, they're going ahead with The New Yorker Presents and a second season for Mozart in the Jungle.

Cocked and Down Dog were both better pilots than I anticipated, but I'm not going to lose sleep that they didn't get picked up.
