"Ray Donovan ( Showtime)"

Can't wait to see this. Liev Schreiber

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeEwqq9EgWs

The show takes place in Los Angeles, California and stars Liev Schreiber as the title character. He plays a "fixer" for the rich and famous, but experiences his own personal problems when his father, played by Jon Voight, is unexpectedly released from prison.

I love the cast but the premiere was odd. Definitely a show I'll wait and see about and maybe watch when it hits DVD/Netflix.

I think there's potential and I like the cast but I didn't like it enough to keep tuning in each week to hope I start liking it more.

I got to watch a bunch of the new pilots and Donovan was one of my least favorite.

I checked out the seven or so that I was interested in. So Ray was one of the least intriguing of those, not the worst of all pilots. I'm sure Sean Saved the World and Mixology are much worse.

The promos had me hooked. This present day fixer with a ole school/street mentality in hollywood. Ok first 5 minutes had me but his family dynamic left me flat.

Ok he's the one solid seed and keeps his family together a family of boys dealing with pedophilia/molestation and the catholic church. Ok thats hella dark and somewhat compelling.

John Voight just leaves me cold. I've seen this character before w/him and I dunno meh.

I really didn't know what role Pooch Hall was gonna play and yes its a huge step up from BET and the Game but his character just comes off as weak. Cant see him getting much screen time beyond the "oh I have a black 1/2 brother casting"

Liev sells it....but either the writing or plot needs to get better.

Good to see ole girl from the L Word Katherine Moenning.

I give it a weak 3 out of 5. Not enough to make me drop Mad Men even though the series is about to wrap its season. 1 episode down I don't know if its strong enough to replace Dexter once its gone. And if it went head to head against Banshee, I'm with Banshee.

What you mentioned about Bansee is huge. I agree that iRay Donovan is a low 3 out of 5 but with Banshee, Rectify, Top of the Lake, and a few other shows on my radar to catch up on, it's tough to invest in a show that comes off flat. There are just too many options out there.

because I look at channels like showtime, hbo, cinemax etc to not only be interested in good plot but major character depth. Something network tv can't really do because its too many cooks and too many people to please.

But Liev is an amazing actor and he can breathe life into a role but he needs more people. I am not the biggest john voight fan and I could do without the scallywag brothers but I see why its needed on the show. The actress playing his wife is very good but what is she gonna do for multiple seasons whine about how its not the east coast? it not like she's his moral center or anything.

Man Rectify was the shortest season run and the pacing I didn't know if I could get with BUT that pacing is the lens man and that perspective of that story alone...layers upon layers upon layers. So far for me in 2013 best new show. I'd get rid of the Killing and stick that on AMC but the pacing might put people off.

But I'm a big drama fan so I'm always willing to take a shot on some drama but because its a genre I like I'm pretty critical. Still mad over TNT letting go of Southland but throw money at Franklin and Bash??? really? ok.

I'll have to catch Top of the Lake on Amazon Prime.

He is a fixer.....a man who dwells in the darker and shady side of Hollywood. I can understand the pace, about trying to show all the things wrong with his family. This show will be fine. Liev was impressive.

Voight will always be Voight. It is worth noting however that in this case, he fits into what they are trying to portray.

The show tries to introduce a bunch of characters, but always from Donovan's angle. I am sure we will learn more as things go.

I read some of the reactions here before I watched it, and I was bracing myself for something bad. It is fine. Not great yet. But as far as pilots go, it worked. I also do not see any problem with this replacing Dexter. It will be in the top 2 shows on Showtime, with only Homeland giving it a run.

It certainly has odd rhythms but I think it's kinda weird to base long-term character assessments off of one episode

And yes, I know what the purpose of a pilot is

Maybe Pooch will have more to do as the season goes on, maybe he won't

The focus really isn't going to be on him anyway. It's not like he's got second billing after Liev Schreiber

All that said, the wife is annoying, what with her BAAAHston accent and hard-headed character decisions

And the subplot with the epileptic actress is also strange but I'm curious to see what direction it takes as the season goes on

But I'm certainly intrigued with the lead character and exactly how the father will orbit around Ray and his brothers and Ray's children

Like, will this season be the father's redemption story, or will it be about Ray fending off a vulture from his past

Or maybe neither

I'ma keep watching though

>The show tries to introduce a bunch of characters

I think it tried to fit too much into the pilot. I think it's a fine start, but it didn't have anything that stood out as a "OH SHIT! I gotta watch this!" moment.

I think it'll be a good show. I enjoyed the episode. But it was definitely flat and at times, slow.

The premise is interesting but the writing was so poor I had trouble sitting through it. I'll check out the second episode and if there's no indication it'll get better I'm probly all set.

Some of it worked. Liev rocked it. I liked the dynamics with him and the other brothers, and liked the limited stuff with half brother. And I liked the premise in general

But there was a good amount of stuff that didn't work. Te wife came off as the worst person in the world. I didn't care about anything that she whined about and she kept making horrible decisions. Wasn't really blown away by Voight either. And I hope they give Eliot Gould more to do.

Still trying to decide if I want to bother with a second episode. There's potential, but it could also drop off a cliff.

still I gave it episode 2 and I'm coming around...

The family storyline is fantastic, the hollywood stuff is AWFUL though... the dude playing Tommy as a believable movie star is terrible and everything about his story has been laughable... those scenes remind me of that show Dirt that Courtney Cox had on FX for a while

and yet i don't.

the writing is incredibly uneven.

i really feel bad for the cast, which is great.

and any time there's a black person on screen the show becomes CBS bad. white writers have no excuse to be so black tone deaf after The Wire.

sense of 'this woman was down with him from day one & keeps a grounded Southie sensibility about her in the face of Hollywood artifice' to making her an Adrian Balboa circa Rocky IV level of wet-blanket who tries to pretend her husband is an investment-banker who can't stop taking meetings rather than be home for dinner instead of a man who spends his days cheating death & taking penitentiary chances in order to provide for the lavish lifestyle she's become accustomed to.

She's starting to sound as annoying & hypocritical as Carmela Soprano in those moments.

..that's exactly how this show plays out

they've pilfered pivotal characters from life/other series and thrown them all into one miscellaneous pot.

lee drexler = ari gold (sans style)
ezra goodman = liberace (sans the ghey)
abby donovan = poor man's carmela soprano

only one problem: they forgot the roux

and gumbo is nothing without the roux, slow cooked to perfection. the writers hit fast fwd from the start, and they're speed-balling through what would otherwise be a solid premise. don't get me wrong, the cast is phenomenal. incredible performance by eddie marsan as terry donovan.

what's astonishing is the fact that they're wasting one of the best performances from jon voight i've seen in years.

the most troubling detail of this series: ray donovan

liev schreiber has the most confusingly sad lead i've seen in a dramatic series.

a cleaner with a conscious???

c'mon.

what makes it worse is that you know this guy never needed any of this. he could very well be running any business of his own, without being treated as a well payed lackey. he's the stoic bad-ass with the dreams of having a normal life and horrible judgement when it comes to women.

its not too late to save this series, but they better act fast. the clock is ticking...

..i'm slippin'

can't believe i didn't recognize this from the 1st ep. gave jon voight props for what appeared to be one of the best roles he's delivered in over 10 years and it turns out he's merely channeling christopher walken.

granted, its a damn-good impression (sans the dramatic speech pattern).

the rest of this show is fragile. the typical story of a man trying to change his circumstances. he moves his family across the country (and to the hills) to escape the pitfalls of a life of crime. problem is, he can't save them from stupidity.

- ignorant nosey wife who loves to hate the bad boy she married. she trusts no one, but fails to realize no one trusts her because she can't keep her nose clean and her mouth shut.

- spoiled daughter screaming for attention.

- confused son who's frustrated and in the closet.

and now he's on a mission to get rid of his father, the one person he thinks has been the bane of his own existence. except he can't do it, so he's gonna hire the one person he knows would LOVE to take down his family?

this is a mess.

just like the Sopranos, he's got a wife and kids who can't see the forest for the trees.... Dude is spelling shit out for the idiots, but no one sees it. They've spent the entire time hating their husband/father but falling head over heels for a man who told the son it's alright to be gay (as long as you don't stick it in), sniff dat white, get drunk etc. tells the daughter it's ok to be loose, and uses the wife like she's his lackey/fetch it girl. All while setting their provider up to the Feds...

..they draw from these to make their main character more believable.

in this case, ray is the silent type. less is more.

unfortunately, what works in business doesn't always translate well on the home front.

still, the writing for the show is paper thin, at best. ray chose a wife who can't accept him for who he truly is. she wants to know everything, but can't be trusted with the truth because she can't keep her fuckin' mouth shut. she's a HORRIBLE mother, with nothing else to do but nag & gossip.

the general approach isn't too far off base, but the execution is clumsy.

It's not helping its cause to be existing up against Breaking Bad for comparison.

But seriously, this show ain't even 'L-Word' quality despite subject-matter & certain characters much more in line with my tastes.

These past three or four episodes have me thinking the writers figured out the kinks, and have a fixed path on where to go.

I loved this week's episode. Everyone not named Abby Donovan did great work (though, credit where credit's due, her face work when she was in the gym and saw the priest was probably the best she's been on the show all season).

Agreed, but my only problem with the writing was how the black characters were written. Other than that, everything else kind of worked for me, even though there was a been there done that vibe going on.

..and i'm not being harsh.

its season 2, and they're still wasting time on the same boring scenarios.

plenty of talent, plenty of material to work with. they even have some incredible performances here & there. yet, this series is plagued by a serious lack of substance.

ray donovan: he has a well paying job he tolerates, mostly because he's good at it (notice, i said good, not great). he has a wife that he barely tolerates, seemingly to avoid being like his father. he's barely involved in the lives of his children and damn-near hates being home.

mickey donovan: the malicious, manipulative father who's always looking for a piece of the action. brilliant premise, with nowhere to go.

brendan (bunchy) donovan: the dim-witted, emotionally scarred brother, tormented by years of abuse. the writers have NO CLUE what to do with him, so he unwittingly becomes comic relief.

abby donovan: the nagging housewife with no life. critically ignorant, yet determined to prove she's more than just a simpleton. oh, and she likes yoga lol.

terry donovan: the lone savior of this series. obviously a strong individual, struggling to deal with the onset of parkinson's. socially awkward, yet searching for peace.

the writers of this show should be fired for fuckin' this shit up.

The story has run its course. He cant be trusted, ray lets him live, gives him a chance, he does something to prove he cant be trusted, repeat....they need to just move past that storyline and go somewhere else with it. I though theyd kill him off at the end of last season but they brough him back and seem to be focusing on him even more. Im still watching but if the "he fucks ray over, ray doesnt kill him" continues ill stop watching.

Jesus. And it ain't the actress's fault. Trixie can act. This shit though? Are there any writers in television who can write a wife that isn't "a nag who ends up having an affair?"

She's so incredibly generic and obviously just there for Ray to have something to fuck/solve again. If she actually buys the little piece of theater by Ray, his dad and Cochrane, I'm probably calling it quits on this show altogether.

she's completely confused and clueless, and just makes one dumb decision after the next.

Ray, i feel raped,
let me tell my therapist about my violent husband's molestation
ugh fuck Ray
let me throw myself at the yoga instructor... no i can't do this
i feel so sexy now... lemme try on this new lingerie
oooh Ray's buying a new house. I love him so much. He's wondaful man
I love this neighborhood. so classy. "you making fun of me bitch?! Fuck you, snobby cunt!
I'm so attracted to Ray
Wait till i tell my therapist how he's changed
"B-R-I-B-E? that sneaky sonofabitch!!" fuck him!!
Oooh good idea. he's in the shower and always horny..NO?! Fuck you ray!"
Oooh a sexy young cop! But we're just friends, of course
That snobby cunt was right. i need speech lessons. Fuck her
but still, i think it would be nice to go back and see the property
She's making fun of me again, this is SO fun!
Wait, they're making fun of me? Abby gonna have to choke a bitch!
Now i can call my sexy cop friend.
I'm sorry i called. This is so embarrassing. Wanna have sex?
lol sorry, just hold me heehee
here let me take an incriminating picture of myself and send it to him because i'm sure it won't come back to haunt me. he seems really nice and it's not like this actor doesn't play a dick in every other show he's in...

..and the writing is so thin, they're struggling to find work for ray

the best part of this series is bunchy's awkward moments with women.

jimmy's the worst opportunist known to man.

terry's delusional and they have the nerve to act like that gym couldn't be legit without him.

ray's an absentee father who can't stand his wife.

everyone else is there to fuck a main character, fuck a main character OVER, or do their dirty work (basically, the same thing).

they need several new story arcs, and SOON.

In response to Reply # 67
Mon Aug-18-14 04:17 PM by CaptNish

....have so little Hollywood in it? It's like they liked the premise but never talked to a fixer or read about them so they just lay back on the Boston thing. It's so bizarre.

The thing with Terry was so goddamn insulting. He has never been as stupid as they made him in this last episode (and in the previews for next week).

I wish they'd just ditch everything and focus on Ray's job (not Ray covering his ass/past), Mickey wanting to work in film, and Bunchy. And that Mickey shit is terrible too, but watching Voight do a budget Chris Walken is the only reason I enjoy watching. His delivery of the two things he knows ("Robbin' banks and fuckin' black chicks") was the so pulpy, I loved it.

Also, Eion Bailey's onthe show now? Love that dude. Always thought he shoulda been bigger.

whose the sleezy producer, that steals scenes with his character's look and don't give a fuck sentiment.?. like to see him more as the seedy doorway to Donovan's ''woodwork'' and expose Ray's secrets via psychoanalysis ala ''The Sopranos'',but with twist and shit.

..how many times will we be reminded that:

- bunchy is aloof and unaware
- terry is washed up, desperate, & out of touch
- mickey is a selfish inappropriate douche
- ray's children are ignorant
- abby's an idiot
- ray's a glutton for punishment

the "dysfunctional family" plot is tired. while the individual characters are intriguing, every story arc for this show is paper thin.

the show suffers, mainly because they've developed ray as this bad boy hollywood fixer, yet he's too much of a nice guy to really get shit done.

..ray just went full fuckin' retard on any & everything that mattered in this series (which really isn't sayin' much).

we knew ezrah sent avi to take out kate (who obviously wanted that pulitzer posthumously), but the rest of this shit is hilarisad.

ok, so ray makes good on his threat to ezra and dimes on the body buried @ the site of his new foundation. promptly told lena to deliver the goods on cochran, effectively ending his career.

meanwhile, the 3 stooges (mickey, terry, & the 'other brother daryll') make complete asses of themselves (again). terry's on the hook for armed robbery, yet mickey & d manage to take the bullshit 20k they got from their botched robbery and flip it @ the track for a cool mil.

the saddest part of the season finale?

hands down, it has to be the look on halloran's face when abbey shot down his nobel gesture (LMAO!).

and of course, the inevitable end of cookie brown. we knew his time was up, and ray tried to give him a way out.

so where does this leave everything now that ray hit the self-destruct button?

*smh

I guess because he was such a prick in Boardwalk, i was expecting that type of character, but it turned out he's just a super nice guy, and kind of a sucker.

Why this boyscout would risk so much for this nagging shrew and all her baggage was pretty confusing. We can see why Abby liked him, but i have no clue why he was into her.

Dude damn near risked his life, and his career for that? Her picking Ray was the best thing that could have happened to him.
