Unclothed Man in the 35th Century by Dash Shaw - This was weird. The stories, yes, but especially the format. It's a collection of short stories and storyboards for Shaw's IFC show, mostly dealing with futuristic sci-fi themes. Cool ideas and visuals, maybe came off a bit light overall, but I still dug it. The show seems like it would've been on some trippy Liquid Television shit so I may have to seek that out.
A Wrinkle in Time (Hope Larson comic adaptation) - Couldn't get through it. Some cool concepts, especially for a "children's" book, but nothing about the characters or storytelling compelled me to read on. Having never read the original novel I'm not sure if my problem was with the adaptation or the story itself.
Currently reading Tekkonkinkreet aka Black and White by Taiyō Matsumoto and it's like the illest looking thing ever. It's like seeing Moebius through a manga filter or something, I dunno. A friend recommended it after I showed him an ogn I'm working on, thinking it was an influence. I'd never even heard of it before, and don't get me wrong, it looks 100000000000x cooler than anything I'll ever do, but it was interesting to crack open the book and just be like "oh yeah, so THAT'S what I was going for here and never even realized it". It should be depressing but that's being offset by the exhilaration I get when I discover a dope artist for the first time. A nice bonus is that his work doesn't span 900 volumes like a lot of manga does so I feel like seeking out more of his stuff will be somewhat manageable.
Also: I swung by the comic shop this past Friday night (baller shit I know) and on a whim copped a couple of those EC Weird Fantasy reprints. You know the ones they did a few years back in "floppy" format, basically reprints of their titles from the 50s. I see them everywhere, even in retro candy shops tryna get some kinda ambiance goin, but this was the first time I decided to buy some. Turns out they had a previous owner... I take it to the counter and the guy says "You know where these came from?.... MARK WAID'S CLOSET." ----------------------------- http://talestosuffice.com/ @kennykeil
