anybody still watching. i caught the first two episodes...not a bad start but nothing new has really been set up except for Fiona suddenly becoming dumb and reckless. she wasn't ever the sharpest tool in the shed but she always seemed to make the right move, within her resources, for the family. now that dynamic has kinda flipped a bit. Frank is getting boring though and the kids haven't grown or been developped much. the story with Jimmy is going nowhere good but it's not interesting enough to make me care what happens.
i hope the season shapes up to be a good one but could get bored quickly if they continue on the path they're currently on.

They've got to age these kids a bit next season. The actors playing Debs and Carl are hitting that age where they really can't play younger anymore. Lip and Ian both look like they're a few years out of high school.

Show does a great job of that. At times it gets a little "shock value"-y and ridiculous but it's still enjoyable, and that's specifically due to its ability to strip down its storylines to the basics of everyday life like you said.

Especially about comparing him to his dad. I think that's an underrated analysis of Lip's situation. He's got all the smarts but to a certain extent thrives off of the "slum" life. You hope he wouldn't turn out like his pops but you can't help but think that unless Mandy's pushing him in the right direction gives him a moment of clarity (for lack of a better term), he might end up just like Frank.
I'm glad they're starting to flesh out these characters a little more as the season goes along. The first two seasons were excellent but this season has seemed to really just re-hash the same storylines and offer more shock value than storytelling, but these last couple episodes really opened some shit up. Excited to see how they ride out the rest of the season.

Carl is the man and I'm glad he didn't get caught up. With how much of a young tyrant he can be that would've been a snowball effect, especially considering the lack of guidance he and the rest of the family has. Probly the coolest thing Frank has done in the whole series.

this was an oddly uplifting episode & to some degree everyone closed the season somewhat happy & satisfied, which was a departure for this show.
Even Frank's morally reprehensible ass got as close to being redeemed as you could get while still keeping him Frank in these last two eps.
Goddamn do I love Fiona Gallagher, probably my favorite character on TV right now.
Something about Emmy Rossum's beauty crossed with Fiona's rough edges as she fights to take care of her brothers & sisters just hits me right in my sweet spot, actually kinda reminds me of an older sister I knew in a big Irish family that I grew up around.
I would live in that cold-ass Southside dump to wake up next to her.
Carl quickly became a favorite character this season even with his minimal storylines. I loved his line when the uncle was puking outside when he was just reading the side effects of swallowing the poison. I forget everything he said but it was something like...

my initial thought from the start was he was going to ship him back home with his daughter and make him live with her there... that's the only alternative I can think of to death that fits the story

In previous seasons it just felt as though they kept trying to outdue themselves in how low can Frank sink or how much more functional dysfunctional can we show the family
The show has more balance. It still achieves those functions while making the lives of the characters more into people that everyone in their family has vs looking at the clan as rats in a lab

me too...i liked that he seemed really happy about it...i liked that Fiona figured a way to get in the door at that company....i liked everything Carl and the other lil girl did...only one that ticked me off was ian cause he mighta fucked up lip's chance in order to have his own, which he woulda had in a year or two anyway.....
the scenes with V her moms and kevin were hilarious...i didn't like vanessa Bell's reasoning, but kevin and V were crackin me up
