Both movies I like, really. And they're not bombs, so much as underachieving disappointments-- both were too expensive for the amount of money they brought in, and both were generally panned by the critics more than Denzel's normal fare, so you could make a case, I suppose.

Taking of Pelham 123 and Unstoppable both didn't make their budget back at the box office either, but they were talked about enough and generally well-received enough that it didn't matter.

You'd really have to go ALL the way back to something like The Siege to really get a true "bomb" from Denzel. Over the last fifteen years, Ba's point pretty much stands.

Yeah, he consistently does strong box office numbers, has won multiple Oscars, and is almost universally revered by people who like movies. None of those are very controversial statements. What's the issue here?

As for Pitt, he ventures into some slightly more off-beat projects than Denzel (Jessie James, Tree of Life, etc.), but whatever, that's really neither here nor there. He's good, but he doesn't have the acting chops Denzel has. (And Killing Them Softly was a piece of shit and deserved to flop...)

Anyway, I agree with your general statement.

Cruise got all that, but doesn't open oscar bait well.
Pitt isn't really an action star
Clooney got all that, but can't open ANY movie. -shame too.

I could see Gosling possible getting in Denzel territory tho.

Cruise loses a lot of shine because of his messy ass personal life, but when it comes to show business. Creative AND biz side - dude is DAMNED good.

i.e. he has one thing he does, and he does it very well. Pitt does inscrutable. Whenever he tries to play a character who's earnest and sharing, it doesn't work. When he plays someone who internalizes a lot, or who has to keep secrets? Pitt kills. Jesse James. Tree of Life. Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Pitt plays his shtick. Moneyball comes closest to "normal" Pitt, but even there, the only time he ever "shares" is when he's by himself in his car or in the locker room-- when he's around others, he's very controlling and playing the game. Hence why his chemistry with Jonah works so goddamn well in the film, it's just Jonah trying to figure out how the hell Pitt's gears are turning.

(The only exception to this that really works for Pitt, imo, is Burn After Reading-- he needs to play the big dumb mimbo some more, because goddamn, he slayed that one.)

Cruise simply has a wider range than Pitt. Cruise can go from wide-eyed and earnest to badass and mysterious and back again. His best performances are better than most stars of his caliber's best performances. Magnolia. Born on the Fourth of July. Jerry Maguire.

That's why I think Cruise is better, no agenda-o.

i'm happy that some of you get woodies for dude, but in no world is he better than Pitt

but than again i know I'm bias towards Tom hate, like i am towards Spielberg hate, and that puts me in the minority

but my nigga Pitt, only Denzel better

Because Tom Cruise really is the better actor than Brad Pitt.

Compare Mission Impossible to Troy and then try to tell me who the better actor is.

let me preface with this, unlike many, i liked Troy. AND unlike most, all the M:I movies bore me to shit...

secondly, Pitt's Troy brutalizing Bana's Hector is one of the most intense fights one can think of. Pitt's imma tear ur heart out and than drag yo' body in front of ur pop-pop acting crushes Tommy boy's one and a half hour 'TENSITY gaze into the camera action hero bullshit in the M:I flicks. No doubt, i give Cruze MAJOR props for doing his own stunts, but that in itself isn't the quality of acting or we'd have Jackie Chan in our convos.

two of Tom's most celebrated roles, 4th of July and Jerry McGuire, I just find comical in the I'm laughing at him way. My favorite Cruise performance is in Collateral, he KILT that shit and I'm looking forward to Jack Reacher.

But Pitt, nigga: Fight Club, Snatch, The Assassination of Jesse James, 12 Monkeys, Seven, Tree of Life (a criminally under-rated performance), Burn After Reading, and Inglorious Basterds!?!!

please name 8 movies by Cruuuuze with that range of acting and that quality of film. please do it

I have no idea why Clooney's handsome, charming ass can't open a movie and Pitt's just a lil' too light in the ass to be believable as an action star. Although ostensibly he's got all the tools.

I mean, I get the "argument" ("He's not a star, STOP PRAISING THESE WHITE MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, etc." *yawn*), but comparing Clooney to Washington is kinda type silly. For one, let's take a look at the last 5 projects that each has done (as an actor).

Denzel

Flight
Safe House
Unstoppable
The Book of Eli
The Taking of Pelham 123

Clooney

The Descendants
The Ides of March
The American
Up in the Air
Fantastic Mr. Fox

Take a look at each of those movies, and tell me which ones were designed to have big box office openings. And here's a hint: 3 of Clooney's 5 were limited openings that weren't supposed to open big. And the other two either opened at #1 or #2.

Safe House is not aimed at the same audience that The Descendants is. Fantastic Mr. Fox vs. The Book of Eli does not a fair comparison make. It's silly to compare movies that are *designed* to open big (every single one of Denzel's last 5 was designed and made to have big openings, because they're high concept) with movies that aren't really aiming for the same audience and same audience size.

Anyone saying otherwise is full of shit.

There's a reason Clooney doesn't have very many summer blockbuster and summer blockbuster-type movies on his resume (The Perfect Storm - hit; The Oceans movies - hits), and it's not because the white media has propped him up as some great actor and super box office movie star. That's diversionary, time-wasting bullshit, and I can't look at anyone who would seriously argue that (or cyse it up for message board shits and giggles) with a straight face.

Even if the white media has allegedly propped Clooney up to be a bigger star than some think he is, the fact of the matter is that he's not picking the same so-called blockbusters that other stars like Denzel are. Even if they're both stars, and one allegedly doesn't deserve it, it's pretty clear that each star has picked a different lane and has the acclaim, success and clout to stay there.

It should be noted that while Clooney's last 5 projects didn't "open," their audiences built gradually and ended up being hits.

http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Actor&id=georgeclooney.htm

It should also be noted that George Clooney's a producer on Argo.

Look, I'm sick of this dumb shit. Everyone knows what kind of projects Clooney picks, and can also dig the fact that Denzel takes much larger swings for the fences in bigger projects, gives great performances, and *is praised to the high heavens by the same white media that praises the supposed undeserving Clooney*.

This either/or, fake apples/real oranges bullshit is misleading, not to mention highly annoying.

Bullshit with sugar on top is still bullshit.

This "he ain't a draw" shit don't fly when 3 of his last 5 movies platform, starting out with healthy per-screen averages, then expand, gain momentum with more word-of-mouth and acclaim, and end up being hits by the time awards season is over.

People see his movies. He's a "draw." Cry.

My first response was actually to spades, so there's that

Of course, you couldn't help but jump in, talking about a fuckin' *franchise sequel* that came out in 1997 as proof that he's not a star. I mean, a "draw."

I provided evidence that showed otherwise, and you resorted to talking about how pressed I am by responding to *someone else's* question.

You don't get to have the last word here. You lost. Wipe the tears, accept that shit, and move on.

Because not only are you responding to a post that wasn't directed at you, in "your thread," but you keep responding to the shit like this is still a valid discussion point.

It isn't. You lost. Let it go. Or, just passive-aggressively bring the shit up again in 6 months, like you usually do whenever I post something you don't agree with (ie, the Zoe Saldana issue).

Joel Schumacher did more damage to that shit than Clooney did. The nipples on the Batsuit, a chubby ass Batgirl, Mr Freeze, Batman and Robin fighting over Poison Ivy. That entire SHIT was a mess.

Your main argument stands. But don't use "Batman and Robin" to make it. I think I even refused to see that shit in theaters the previews had me so pissed.

and Denzel isn't touching Gosling's territory either...

he really shouldn't even be in the discussion since Gosling isn't even trying to do mainstream, big budget fare. AT ALL

Everytime he gets near a project that screams big budget, he drops it and goes onto something else...

Gosling will always do the edgy, experimental, left field shit.

You see his poster for ONLY GOD FORGIVES? with his faced beaten up beyond recognition? Denzel ain't doing that...

but i'm with Bas...Denzel is the only triple threat in Hollywood.

DENZEL. No one else.

stop.

he doesn't do big budget fare. he should have went that route after the notebook.

he didn't.

his 'bonafides' are what he's doing now.

gosling is pretty much paving his own career path.

he's more interested in pushing his talent/craft.

he's not signing up for big budget flicks.

unless Derek Cianfrance or Nicholas Refn do big budget flicks, etc.

Gosling isn't going that route...

so no big budget bonafides at all.

have you *seen* Gosling's work post The Notebook? it's pretty clear where his career is going...and that's a good thing.

not everyone actor is or SHOULD BE doing the mainstream, big budget films.

It didn't do huge numbers, but only did about $5M less than projected, and THAT was during BIG storms in the Northeast. Either way, not a flop.

Gangs did $193M
Aviator did $213M
Departed did $289M
Shutter Island did $294M

Each one was Marty's highest grossing film, until the one that followed it.

And Body of Lies did $115M. Since when is that a flop?

Also:

J. Edgar made $79M
Flight has made $84M

Obviously Flight isn't quite done earning yet, but those are comparable numbers. And Flight was helped with great reviews and strong word of mouth, neither of which J. Edgar had.

I was half joking when I first posted that, but I'm beginning to convince myself. Dude makes bank consistently.

So in other words, they're essentially tied even though Denzel been doing it a lot longer and over $400M of his grosses are from prior to Leo's "start" as a star (which, for all intents and purposes, I'm saying was '96 with Romeo & Juliet).

Not even saying Leo's the better actor or the bigger star, but they're pretty fucking comparable, and he's probably a lot closer to being a "triple threat" than most of the guys who have been mentioned in here so far.

but you HAVE to be GOOD at all three, keep it real, fresh: Ben can't act his way out of a shit stained paper bag dangling above an erupting volcano.

He fails at acting. but excels at being a writer and now director...
