Disney to Buy Lucasfilm for $4.05 Billion; New 'Star Wars' Movie in the Works

Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will become Lucasfilm's president, reporting to Walt Disney Studios chair Alan Horn as part of stock and cash transaction.

The Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock and announced a new Star Wars movie to be released in 2015.

Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will become Lucasfilm's president, reporting to Walt Disney Studios chair Alan Horn as part of the stock and cash transaction. Disney is paying approximately half the price in cash and will issue 40 million shares of stock on Tuesday, the company said in a statement.

Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with the franchise's creator and Lucasfilm founder George Lucas serving as creative consultant.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

IV, V, VI; I, II, III.

You'd have to think that Disney is going to stick with the larger points of reference and not go all KOTOR on it.

to run Lucasfilm

She's one of Spielberg's most trusted lieutenants and is also one of the sharper creative executive producer types in the game... the franchise is in good hands with her... and oh, how I'd love to be in those creative meetings...

I honestly figured Lucas himself would do it in a few years after getting bored. I don't love Disney getting control of the entire empire (pun lamely intended), but I can't hate on George caking the fuck out. Regardless, t's been established that his pen/story game isn't exactly aging like fine wine.

if they kept George FAR away from the script, brought in an interesting director, and focused on a new group of characters, i'd actually be interested in Star Wars for the first time since the first prequel.

but the Anakin/Clone Wars story line is so completely fucked out. please, no more.

The prequels weren't poop. The films projected information and more history regarding the star wars universe.

The films werent good or bad, and I didn't view them for that. I viewed them for their stories.

If you are stars wars film fan, then that is the problem. Star wars is much deeper than that.

The movies gave you more than just entertainment. The movies went into great detail about the clones, why they were created, and how they were created. The great battle between dooku/yoda, yoda/darth sidious, obi wan/darth maul.....

The movies touched on so many things, and were able to bridge the gap between anakin skywalker/ luke skywalker.

The movies served their purpose.

meaning no unmolested versions being released.

Marvel's purchase by Disney for $4b will go down as the steal of the century.

Purchasing Lucasfilm, it's library, the studios and the technology (along with the subsidiary corporations) for $4b seems discounted pretty severely. In a world where business valuations are determined as multiples of potential income, this amount could be recouped within 5 years if merchandising is included.

Lucasfilm and their marketing arm has been so wildly successful that, in 1995 prior to the release of the new toy line and the re-release of the films into theaters, was able to negotiate a licensing fee with Hasbro that gave a new majority stake in the company to Lucas.

The patents that Lucasfilm, Skywalker Sound, and ILM hold are the building blocks of most major motion pictures today. This is a copyright library, a technology store house, and a laboratory for technology in film that may not have a peer.

So, yes, $4b is light for a company that still can generate billions in revenue.

This is as undervalued as Facebook is overvalued.

I feel like this would also save them a lot of money. They have the plot down- now they just need someone to create a screen play. The books are phenomenal and Zahn really made you feel the characters too.

The acquisition also raises questions about the future of Stars Wars: Clone Wars, a highly popular series on the Cartoon Network, which is owned by Disney’s competitor, Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner.

EDIT:

okay, i found this:

"Dark Horse and LucasFilm have a strong partnership which spans over 20 years, and has produced multiple characters and story lines which are now part of the Star Wars lore," Richardson said. "'Star Wars' will be with us for the near future. Obviously, this deal changes the landscape, so we'll all have to see what it means for the future."

But for now, "Star Wars" stays at Dark Horse -- which means fans can still look forward to Brian Wood's "Star Wars" ongoing in January 2013

Doesn't Boingo still publish Disney and Pixar comics, and not Marvel? And Universal still has all the Marvel rides.

Disney will make money regardless, so no need to cancel/buy-out the contracts.

Fox owns the distribution rights to those films, so disney can't do anything. lucas is the reason fox hasn't released the originals untouched, so who knows, maybe they will. episode IV does have a dvd release of the original untouched tho.

Or the legacy era.

Anything else (with the exception of the Thrawn Trilogy) would be outright tragic.

...You know what, I can't let this happen to me again. Star Wars is my favorite franchise and every time I just let Lucas and his people sucker me in, take my money, and leave me disappointed. I'm almost scared to see what will happen...

Of course if Kennedy hands this project off to a fresh voice, someone that enjoyed the originals as a youth, someone who really understands what made people fall in love with the original trilogy, then I think this could be a success.

I have a feeling the original cast is going to be back in supporting roles like Nimoy was in the Abrams Trek movie. You give people another dose of those characters and you take the already huge anticipation to

http://www.vulture.com/2012/11/mark-hamill-new-star-wars-trilogy.html

"In the midst of a media-wide spree to get valuable opinions about the sudden, galaxy-shattering news that Disney (Disney!) will very shortly roll out a new Star Wars trilogy picking up where Return of the Jedi left off, Entertainment Weekly scored a chat with Mark "But I Was Going into Tosche Station to Pick Up Some Power Converters" Hamill. While he was as surprised by everyone about Lucasfilm's sale to Disney, he's been privy to the new films since August. After being summoned to lunch alongside Carrie Fisher, Hamill got the news straight from Lucas: "We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX." As to whether Hamill gets to reprise his role, "until we know more, it’s hard to make any comment other than congratulations to George.""

Jedi Academy might be too close to Return of The Jedi's timeline to do. But that could focus on the tweens.

I could see the Young Jedi Knights books (14! of them according to Wikipedia - I only read 6) being a great Disney franchise.

I could also see the The New Jedi Order series being a good jumping off point for teens and older.

Rogue Squadron would make a great TV series.

Only issue is that almost any book with Luke and Leia has Han Solo in it - and I don't think he wants to come back.

If it's 27 years after Jedi then it could very easily focus on the kids.

The three Skywalker/Solo kids seems logical. They'd be tweens to early 20s. They have great name recognition.

If not the Skywalker kids, then a Jedi Academy could work.

As long as they don't don't go 1000 years in the past or future I'll probably watch it.

which can be interpreted as right after, or thematically after, or any number of ways ...

I would guess they probably mean thematically, that is, with some kind of rebalancing of the force.

If you look at it this way:

ANH: 2 Jedi, 2 Sith (Yoda, Obi & Vader, Sidious; or as balanced as it gets)
ESTB: 1 Jedi, 2 Sith (with Luke in training to bring the balance as 2nd Jedi)
ROTJ: 2 Jedi, 2 Sith (at the beginning), but only Luke at the end, with his mixed baggage and Anakin style uniform

You could make a case for Luke internally balancing the force, but how long does that last?

The next movie would have to address that, and then fill the void depending on which path he ends up favoring.

han/leia/luke can't be MAIN characters with the same actors...i love Hamill but NO....Fisher might be ok, and Ford i'm sure isn't that interested, if at all....

like what has already been said, you have to focus on the next generation of jedi/whomever....i read a lil bit of what happens after ROTJ, but i forget most of it now.....

i think smaller parts as the characters they made famous would be cool, but no more than that....

hopefully it's just a rumor, but hey. disney DOES own Marvel. i can see it now....Vader returns as the sith lord with Jar Jar Binks as his apprentice. Ewoks as the Jedi Knights, and George Lucas brought in to write all the love scenes, of which there will be many.

The Darth Vadar thing ... just no ...

Darth Vadar died twice at the end of ROTJ ... both as Anakin in the physical, and as the Sith Lord metaphysically ... His redemption was arguably the plot of the entire original trilogy.

Bringing him back as that pretty much just shits on everything the story is ...

deadline.com:

>J.J. Abrams To Direct New ‘Star Wars’ Movie For Disney

By DOMINIC PATTEN | Thursday January 24, 2013 @ 1:46pm PST

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says. Abrams was courted heavily by producer Kathleen Kennedy to take the Star Wars job.

Expected in 2015, Episode VII will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2005′s Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Michael Arndt is writing the script for the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ franchise by Disney. The company bought Lucasfilm in October for $4 billion, with the Star Wars franchise the jewel in the crown. At the time, CEO Bob Iger said three more Star Wars films were in the pipeline. Abrams’ other space-based franchise sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, comes out May 17.

This weekend, the PGA will honor the Lost creator with its 2013 Norman Lear Award For Television. Abrams is repped by CAA and Oasis Media Group.

Pretty much every action/sci-fi/fantasy director working grew up worshiping Star Wars, but Abrahams seems to be one who has the most, I don't know, vision. So I don't think they could have done a better job with this selection.

I also assume they made it worth his while to pick this instead of doing the next inevitable Star Trek sequel. I mean shoot, I'd pick Star Wars over Star Trek any day, but I know he's probably caking pretty hard off of the latter.

Especially if the first makes as much money as we all know it will. And since they seem, like Lucas, to be committed to doing one every three years, that probably makes him busy for the next eight years. I doubt he'll be able to squeeze in another Star Trek sequel in-between.

They'll get the tone they want, set up the story in the first movie and then hire some talented hired guns to follow suit. Basically, I could see this running more like a TV show with directors hired to follow form.

I'm not sure what would make him a 'horrible' choice.

Are you under the impression it would be 'The Town' with Jedi?
Do you think he'd somehow revert to Heartthrob Ben with such a tentpole?
Outside of those two truly horrible extremes, 'horrible' is a horrible description IMO.

He's got qualities that would lend themselves very well in any genre. Not that this somehow means he would necessarily be right for such a role, but by no means would he be 'horrible'.

I guess I would prefer someone with some experience in genre to take on the biggest sci-fi franchise of all time. Has he directed any sci-fi movies to date?

Anyway, here's a yahoo news swipe mentioning it but I read it in another:

You don't hand the keys to one of the biggest franchises of all time to someone with no experience directing scifi. He is obviously a highly competent filmmaker but being at the helm of Star Wars is a reach. I'm surprised that he was in the conversation.

Let's see- they just aquired a summer tentpole worth billions.

You don't think EVERY director with a recent track record of excellent films is in that conversation?

Chances are his name 'came up', a short conversation was had, and that was the end of it. Oh, and they didn't hand him the keys. He's an excellent director and a guy like that, who knows how to add weight and urgency to a film is always worth considering, especially when he's got known sci-fi/comic book interests on a fan level.

Whether he's an established sci-fi guy or not, that's a guy worth bringing into the conversation. He may not be the *best* choice, and may not be *the right guy*, but pretending that someone with his credentials is a 'horrible' choice to even discuss is a little overboard.
