i've thought he's been one writer who really gets spider-man. some of slott's worked better than others but, on the whole, i've really liked him.

now he's replacing peter parker with a darker, more armoured version.

i hope he knows what he's doing.

the thought of an azrael spider-man doesn't sound like a great way to go.

That just felt like a stinker from the jump. How'd it turn out?

As far as this new direction goes, yeah, there are more than a few red flags there. But at the same time I am kind of interested in seeing Dan Slott do 'gritty', just so I can know what that looks like

...crate pretty soon, I'm going to need something for him to piss on when he feels the need. Might as well be this.

As always, you jabronis are on your own with this one. They pretty clearly ran out of ideas a while ago, and even brought back all the other Spider-Man titles, as I expected they would. So they might as well go "dark". Wait, isn't that the reason they rebooted this title in the first place? Because it was getting too "dark"? Marvel's editorial staff are a bunch of clowns.

FWIW, Dan Slott has a proven track record at writing "dark" titles. See: "Arkham Asylum: Living Hell" and the supremely underrated "Great Lakes Avengers" mini-series; both of which are also hilarious. I'll stick to re-reading those.

That editorial masterstroke has been run its course and Mephisto himself couldn't change the fact that it paid off.

I don't really see ASM as being post-BND anymore. It's post-Big Time, if anything, and even that move made for some pretty fun issues. At this point though, I'm as skeptical as the next man.

The 3-D animation takes some getting used to if you're old enough to remember the original cartoon, but it's done in a really cool style that incorporates more 'traditional' animation in some pretty cool ways. The writing is obviously geared towards a younger audience, but the tone is right on and the personalities are all there.

Cartoon-wise I haven't really been keeping up with too much superhero/comic related stuff. I like the occasional DC Nation short when one comes to my attention. Non-comics related, Regular Show and Gravity Falls are probably my favorite animated shows right now.

I didn't expect to like the new Turtles based on the character models, but I got hooked before the first commercial break. It's as much of an "Ultimate" TMNT as the new comic series is but in a different way.

Reds are basically varietal on ambers... which is something I like a lot.

Only one I've brewed was a red wheat beer where I used sassafrass extract as a flavor adjunct. Damn good, good enough that I didn't let it age like I was supposed to. Have one bottle left now and have been sitting on it for a while, probably will crack with the fam around Thanksgiving or so.

unless I'm confusing them with Green Flash... there are truly an insane number of breweries operating right now and I'll be surprised if there are anywhere near this many in 10 years.

We've got a case of Warstiners, lager and dunkel... not much else new.

I do have two batches in fermenters waiting to be bottled that I'm excited about. One's supposed to be a tripel, but it's not brightly colored enough, almost an amber. But it's strong and spicy and sweet (and, for the time being, flat and warm as it finishes aging before I bottle it and age it some more). The other one's a wheat dubbel; haven't racked it yet so have no idea how it tastes, but it smelled great during active fermentation. I splurged for the good Belgian yeast for the tripel and then re-used the trub for the dubbel, which is supposed to be bad technique but I've found brewing to be a very forgiving hobby in terms of technique.

Other recent homebrew projects included a triple IPA, which is pretty damn good, and a raspberry ale, which I can only hope will improve by aging b/c right now it's very mediocre and I put a lot of work into it (even used raspberries from my own patch). But sources tell me that a raspberry ale typically has to age a long time, so not too worry excessively.

I've also got a keg of a buckwheat honey brown ale that's now over a year old. I'm kind of excited to crack into it and see what's up... the samples I bottled disappeared loooong ago. We're doing garage org this wkd. so with a little luck maybe I can get the kegerator moved into the basmement (the garage just gets too hot to use it there in summer) and get it cleaned and get that ale tapped into. And make a batch of root beer with the kids!

could theoretically win as much as $60,000 (more than 20% of their current annual intake) from this donation challenge. The Posse supports its own, but this is only one degree removed, so I'm hoping some of you could kick in...

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=11603354&mesg_id=11603354&page=

since I posted the most recent update, they've snuck ahead on total cash donated as well, so it's very possible they could take the triple crown here. If you've got a spare $25 and a credit card, that'll help get it done.

Thanks, and now back to your scheduled comics. Looks like a good week.

Yeah, I just heard about this too in last (?) month's GQ.

Patton Oswalt wrote a contributor's article reviewing it: http://www.gq.com/entertainment/tv/blogs/the-stream/2012/10/patton-oswalt-on-marvel-comics-the-untold-story.html

I really want to check this out.

I've been reading...
Uncanny X-Force - I'm sad it's ending, but the new cover to the Marvel Now relaunch looks intriguing, and may follow plotlines laid out in Remender's book, with Psylocke and whoever the lady in Fantomex's clothes is.

Walking Dead - this new villain is too Governor-ish, and the death in #100 was WOW.

Batman #13 - since when does Capullo draw Batman, and Joker has no face?? I like both, I may try this 'Death of the Family' out.

You guys like horror? I've been busy putting work in with the Get Out the Room in the locked post at the top. Check it out if you haven't already.

I hope not!
If so you owe it to yourself to start from number 1 and read up, you can do it in trades for real but holy shit what a ride. Snyder is the man hands down period point blank.

The Walking Dead holds a special place with me. Although I will admit the writing needs to be a little better than it has been. Just got done issue 103 and they've felt so damn short. I think more dialog is needed between characters, nothing too preachy but a little more depth. Some more action would help also.

I tried out Uncanny Avengers, and I liked it.

Uncanny X-Force relaunch looks cool, and I hope it continues what Remender in his run, it is/was fantastic.

Thunderbolts looks intriguing simply b/c the lineup of characters is insane.

Avengers Arena, even though I don't know any of the characters, intrigues me, even as a ripoff of Battle Royale and Hunger Games.

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/10/16/thor-god-of-thunder-1-preview

I'm not even much of a Thor fan (although I was interested in the JMS/Coipel relaunch, but never got around to it), nor have I read much of Jason Aaron's work, but these first four preview pages alone (art + words) look incredibly dope. Sort of a horror/mystery vibe to it.

I was purposely avoiding Marvel's $3.99 books, but I may at least check out this first Thor arc. And I've read about Aaron's plans for the book which interested me anyway.

This book started out great and has been on a steady incline ever since

It's not even about the story, really. The art, the atmosphere, the attitude... it's just the kind of comic you want to live in for a little while every month. Quickly becoming one of my current favorites.

That's what's best about it definitely, it's got this dirty feel to it that completely sucks you in. No gloss or glamor...

Last couple of issues, especially the one that just dropped this week, rocked my world just about as much as this series ever did, and that's saying something. Perfect balance of creepy mysticism, old west action, and intense character moments. Mummy shootouts, giant wendigo ghost deer, great mustaches, etc. A+

http://ultra-culture.com/brendan-mccarthys-zaucer-of-zilk-is-out-now/

I can't tell if this is a new mini-series, or a reprinting of something he did with 2000 AD, but either way it's new to me. All I know is that it's Brendan McCarthy and it's called ZAUCER OF ZILK, that's enough to get my cash.

Haven't read it yet. But it's out there and it looks bonkers. I know he's got a few fans in our ranks.

(I might be an issue behind on the latest Bulletproof Coffin, come to think of it. That clown issue kinda left me shook.)
