"Whedon to write/direct Avengers 2, develop Avengers TV show"

deadline.com/hollywood:

>Joss Whedon To Write & Direct ‘Avengers 2′

By DAVID LIEBERMAN, Executive Editor | Tuesday August 7, 2012 @ 7:40pm EDT

UPDATE: Marvel Studios has weighed in with a statement that confirms the 2015 release date that Deadline had heard about the sequel to The Avengers. “Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

EARLIER, 5:27 PM EST: Well, this didn’t exactly seem much of a cliffhanger, but Disney CEO Bob Iger announced at today’s earnings call that Joss Whedon will be back to write and direct a second installment of The Avengers. Not only that; Whedon, who took the subpar film Buffy The Vampire Slayer and turned it onto a huge TV hit, will develop a live-action TV series involving Marvel characters as Disney continues to make the most out of its $4 billion acquisition of the superhero factory. Iger didn’t mention a release date for Avengers 2, or provide its official title, but we are probably looking at 2015.

The announcement comes just a few weeks after Whedon told an audience at Comic-Con that he was still undecided about directing a sequel, but of course nobody believed him. The Avengers has grossed $1.46B since it was released in May — $616.8M of that from domestic venues — making it the third top grossing film of all time. Not only that; it was a damn good superhero film with plenty of action and the funny and clever dialogue that is Whedon’s signature.

While Disney didn’t say specifically how much the film contributed to its earnings in the quarter that ended in June, it notes in an SEC filing that the film was “primarily” responsible for a 25% increase in theatrical distribution revenue to $834M. It certainly has vanquished any doubts about whether Disney overpaid for Marvel.

they could use it as a vehicle to introduce new characters into the movie (Black Panther, Hank Pym etc) without having to do separate movies or rush a story within an Avengers 2

the budget alone would be tough to make it look good without a bunch of CGI. nevermind retaining all of the actors in the key roles. much better to let the cartoon handle it in between films.

Buffy & Angel in theme were comic books adapted to the television medium and the BEST crossover between both those worlds.

Probably the only problem is that he might not have enough time to be as hands on as needed...but whatever show he creates will be G-O-D-L-Y.

We've worried about all of these lesser characters who may be difficult sells for a big-budget movie out of the gate but may get lost in the mix if introduced within an Avengers flick... a TV series allows them to potentially introduce new worlds and characters if done right.

Key words: if done right.

But I trust Whedon at this point.

just cos u guys had ur heads up ur asses doesnt mean Joss wasn't already among cult TV godhood. actually TV is the format he is most proven/solid in, film was the iffy factor (but "Serenity" deaded that concern as well many a cycle ago).

is okp srsly worried about a Joss Whedon TV show? at least this time he can do his thing and not worry about abrupt cancellation.

an Avenegers show full of B-listers woudldn't work imo. You need the heavy hitters to at least be a consistent presence, and it needs to be the same actors as the movie.

will have all the stuff a film would have with the time enuf to really develop characters and story. given enuff time (at least 4-5 seasons) it'll be one of the coolest superhero joints evar to hit tvland.

but ye, they didn't specifically say it would be an Avengers tv show, and i dont really care WHAT it is cos more Joss on television is always a good thing. those who dont automatically know that by now never watched a single ep of Buffy/Angel/Firefly (not including Dollhouse cos i aint seen it yet).

im glad Avengers made true believers outta some of yous but even the average longterm Joss nut knows not to worry.

They should center the show around S.H.I.E.L.D. and use it to introduce all the lesser characters (Black Panther, Hank Pym, Luke Cage, etc. etc.). It could be S.H.I.E.L.D. setting up a farm league for the Avengers that handle some lesser known villains. Sort of a super hero treadstone project that sets up the next additions to the proper Avengers team in the sequel

I can't think of a comic that would be perfect for prime time TV show more than Alias.

I know they were developing it but with Whedon involved, it could be great

ABC Greenlights ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’ Marvel Pilot, Joss Whedon To Co-Write & Possibly Direct

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Tuesday August 28, 2012 @ 6:14pm PDT

EXCLUSIVE: ABC has ordered a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D, a live-action series from The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, Marvel TV and ABC Studios. The project is based on Marvel’s peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D (which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate) found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes, including the blockbuster 2012 movie The Avengers, in which S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury, recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to fstop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth.

S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon, his bother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon also is set to direct the pilot, schedule permitting. Production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately. Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen executive produce with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

The project had been in the works at Marvel TV and ABC Studios for some time. Earlier this month, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that it had signed an exclusive film and TV deal with Joss Whedon, which included him writing and directing The Avengers sequel and develop a live-action series for Marvel TV and ABC, both owned by Disney.

This marks a return to series television for Joss Whedon, creator of cult favorites Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. Husband and wife writing duo Tancharoen and Jed Whedon co-wrote with Joss Whedon Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and have also worked as writer-producers on Dollhouse and Spartacus.

38. "Cast Descriptions (swipe)"

Joss Whedon has been perhaps understandably cryptic about ABC's recently greenlit S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, teasing only that the television drama will be "autonomous" from Marvel's "Avengers" film franchise, and will introduce new characters. But now we actually have an idea just who those characters will be.

TVLine has obtained cast descriptions for the project, which centers on the global espionage and law-enforcement agency that's helped to provide the connective tissue between the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As part of his three-year exclusive deal with Marvel Studios, Whedon will co-write the pilot with his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen, who will serve as executive producers/showrunners along with Jeffrey Bell ("Angel," "Alias").

Here are the outlines for the five central characters:

Skye: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident -- with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.
Agent Grant Ward: Quite the physical specimen and "cool under fire," he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He's a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he's the kind of guy that grows on you.

Agent Althea Rice: Also known as "The Calvary," this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other's company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies -- she deals with biology and chemistry, he's a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

"It's new characters. It needs to be its own thing," Whedon said earlier this month. "It needs to be adjacent but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.' You want them to go off on their own thing and say, 'Well, what has S.H.I.E.L.D. got that the other heroes don't have?' Part of that, to me, is that they're not superheroes, but they live in that universe. That makes them a little bit -- even though they're a big organization -- underdogs, and that's interesting to me."

Production will begin immediately, with S.H.I.E.L.D. targeted to be Marvel's first live-action television series since its purchased by Disney in 2009.
