" The Total Recall Remake (Wiseman, 2012)"
Wed Aug-01-12 11:00 PM by bwood

Sorry guys after watching Celeste and Jesse Forever I decided to turn my brain off. Plus my nigga came to this one, so why not right? And I thoroughly regret it. They should call this Total We Did This Better Already. Total Shit. Total Redundancy.

-Only thing I though was dope was the highway case scene with the floating cars.

-What the fuck was with the dubstep score that was overwhelming at various parts?

-The whole post-Apocalyptic with two cities on the entire planet and we go to both by going through the Earth's core was dumb.

-At times, I couldn't understand Colin Farrell's mumbling.

-They threw in a 3 titted prostitute for shits and giggles. In the OG one at least it made sense why the bitch has 3 tits.

-They don't go to Mars, so we never get the classic line "Get your ass to Mars!"

-Some shots of the movie were out of focus.

I'm struggling to remember anything else honestly and I don't care to remember.

I should've saw Red Hook Summer...

It's not the original but since the original is a genre classic, that's unfair. This one goes more for the action genre instead. And there is a LOT to enjoy.

- lots of good gadgets. Sci-fi needs gadgets, and this had more than its share.
- lots of good fighting, both hand to hand and shoot em up. The CGI shoot out "tracking shot" they show in the trailer in Rekall is probably the worst in the film. So much fun, and loads of running (obviously tailor made this flick for a young Cruise, who would've SLAYED it, but I digress)
- 3-breasted girl bare-breasted in a PG-13 movie. YUP.
- the opening titles immediately explain that the world of this film is very different than the world of the original. Most of the story points are the same, but the world looks and feels different. This helped me disassociate with the original fairly successfully. They call back to it on an occasion or two, but it's mostly a new take on the same story.
- BOKEEM WOODBINE. He is awesome in this-- has three or four scenes, all of which had me smiling huge.
- is the movie dumb as shit? Yup. Does it ever stop moving? Nope. And the action is clever. The rooftop chase, the floating car chase, the sliding elevator chase--- plenty of fun set pieces.

If you're gonna get hung up hoping for the original, don't even bother going. If you want a summer blockbuster big dumb fun sci-fi action flick, definitely go. I had a LOT of fun.

You're a tough read sometimes honestly, Rj.

As long as you know it's a dumb but fun actionfest, full of gadgets, chases, and explosions, you'll likely dig like I did.

But I know I've also liked flicks that you've called total shit before. So you're a tough read, lol.

It's mostly used for:
1. The giant cities/set pieces that couldn't otherwise be practically created
2. Removing the practical elements to make it look more futuristic (I.e. the "floating car" sequence was shot with real futuristic cars on top of practical vehicles removed in post)

I can't really recall CGI creatures or needlessly CGI elements for the most part-- it's primarily used for scope and/or creating the illusion.

Total Recall is one of the most thought-provoking action movies I've ever seen. It's fucking crazy. I don't get what's dumb about that shit. "The Expendables", which is one of my favorite action movies, is dumb as fuck. But this is some legit "we thought this shit through, and oh by the way we are going to fuck with the audience's mind a little bit". This isn't some run of the mill action flick. I don't get why you have to say it's dumb. That's like saying "The Matrix" was dumb, which we know it's not because it challenges the audience a lot more than the average action movie would.

I hope this ends the needlessly serious action film phase we're in. The film desperately needed a boost of life. Visually it looked good (save for the stupid added lens flare; can we stop with that already?) but it was just dull beyond that. Kate Beckinsale was hot as shit but all of her scenes basically were the same. She even ended each action scene with the same expletive. Chug every time she fails to capture Farrell and says an exasperated "Shit!"

I don't know what the deal is with Kurt Wimmer; he is well regarded but his name ends up on a lot of shit. This one just wasn't good.

Just not the way you wanted.

It's beyond me why so many people expect a remake to be the same as the OG. A movie remake is just like a cover song- they use the same base material and reinterpret through their particular vision. This didn't need to be on Mars. In truth, it follows the original fairly closely, story wise. The background elements were different, but the basic mechanics of the story were pretty close.

because I thought this was one of the most fully-realized futuristic worlds I've ever seen in a movie. I was completely blown away. I went into this shit ready to hate because I'm an Arnold stan and, like The Joker in Batman, I thought the original could not be topped (it's a top 3 Arnold movie, easily). But this was a completely fresh, Jason Bourne meets Minority Report version of Total Recall...and it was fucking amazing.

But I guess keep in mind that I'm a sucker for sci-fi. When sci-fi is done right it is freaking unbeatable, and I'd say this was definitely done right.

Pros:
Futuristic world is believable and detailed
Futuristic devices are cool as shit and believable
Like original, plot has you constantly questioning what is real
Deep without being heavy-handed (i.e. "You are what you are, not the sum of your memories"...Nolan should take fucking notes from this movie because I just watched TDKR last night and they spent like half the movie discussing philosophy whereas Total Recall IS the fucking philosophy)
Love story was understated, as it should have been (i.e. no constant make-outs with Beal because Farrell barely knows Beal...makes sense. Nolan, take notes)

Cons:
There is so much detail in the CGI futuristic world that it can be difficult to figure out what you're looking at
Some fight scenes underwhelming (i.e. Farrell's scenes when he takes on a room full of dudes are done in slow-mo)
The rebel leader (i.e. good guy) motivation was not explained very well (this was not a big detractor bc this iteration was more focused on Houser's personal struggle to find out who he really was than in the original's focus on good vs evil)

Overall I think this is likely the best movie I'll see all year and is probably the best movie I've seen in at least a couple of years. Favorite movie since at least The Expendables, maybe since Taken. Looks like it's not a critical darling though...too bad because it's freaking awesome.

It's not shaping up to be a huge success with the public either. It's only at 56% with users on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics at 31 and users at 56, movie might just suck.

>-Only thing I though was dope was the highway case scene with
>the floating cars.

I hate chase scenes, period. Only chase scenes I've ever actually enjoyed were the ones from the Bourne Trilogy and Taken. Other than that, they are always the worst part of any movie for me, and this is no exception.... So I suppose I really can't comment on this since I just hate them in general.

>-What the fuck was with the dubstep score that was
>overwhelming at various parts?

It fit the tone and scenery perfectly IMO. My only gripe is that, as with 98.3367% of all movies these days, it just gets too damn loud. That's with most big budget/action/sci fi flicks though, so IMO it doesn't really hold up as a critique of this one.

>-The whole post-Apocalyptic with two cities on the entire
>planet and we go to both by going through the Earth's core was
>dumb.

Can't say I was a fan of that either. Not the best idea.

>-They threw in a 3 titted prostitute for shits and giggles. In
>the OG one at least it made sense why the bitch has 3 tits.

Shits and giggles? Most remakes do things like this as a nod to the OG. It didn't need to make sense why she had three tits, because we ALL know why they put it there. It took up like 5 seconds of screen time, she told him where to go to Rekall, and that was that. I'd hardly say this is worth griping about in the slightest. It was a nod to the original and that's all.

>-They don't go to Mars, so we never get the classic line "Get
>your ass to Mars!"

SMH. Three out of five of your critiques are trivial at best. Dubstep, three titted women from Earth, and the lack of a line saying "get your ass to mars!" hardly make this movie shit. I'd really like to hear something in depth here to explain why it's "total shit", because I just don't see where these criticisms add up to total shit.
..................

Anyhow...

-the whole concept of, "Hey, the past doesn't make me who I am, RIGHT TODAY makes me who I am" was dope and a nice thread to weave throughout.

-Beal/Beckensile were worthless IMO. There didn't even need to be a semblance of a love story in this IMO. Every scene with Beal in it made me wish she'd die so she wouldn't waste any more screen time. That time could have been spent adding a little more depth and screen time to his ally, or showing how the war went down, some Hauser flashbacks, something. Anything, really.

All we get from Beckensile is glaring "I'm a TOUGH BITCH" looks and a few decent fight scenes. Mathias was..... I dunno.... could have been a more imposing figure. Could have been fleshed out better, as opposed to running with time devoted to Beckensile and Beal.

i'd add Cohaagen as well. they should've been fleshed out some more. cut out the unnecessary scenes at the bar, at the job, the 3 tits, and cut down the chase of quad/houser after he discovers that beautiful pussy-house wife is all an act and give some time to two of the most important figures in the movie. better pacing would've gave the viewer some breathing room with all the non-stop action

-the world looked incredible.
-Beckinsale is arguably the finest Becky in Hollywood now, and even though my belief of her kicking ass was suspended early on (her being so slender in Underworld don't matter cause she's a vampire), her sinister ice grill and determination to kill Quad/Houser was palpable.
-Beil put in nice work, but they committed a crime against humanity by cover up that body the whole movie SMDH
-the fight scenes were aight

-my biggest problem with this movie was it's inability to know if it wanted to pay homage to the original, or be its own entity. the scenes where homage is being paid, were so lack luster: 3 tits, the airport/changin faces scene, and the "you're still dreaming" scene was so melodramatic. i wanted to hear 'Bine say "schizoid embolism!!!" not whatever the fuck he ended up saying
-also Colin spent the whole movie looking confused and borderline autistic. in the OG Arnold does look confused, but it's also balanced by him taking a hold of his situation and environment, and committing to his actions. Ferrel looked lost while kicking ass. and sorry that piano scene was MAD CORNY
-by the end i aint really give a damn.
-lastly, thanks to bwood, just now do i know they were going through the earth's core. that's just fucn retarded.

wasnt really much of a story but it was very entertaining.

- kate beckinsale was DOMINATING. biel just dont compare. that's how fine kate is.
- EXCELLENT action scenes
- bokeem "swole dave chappelle" woodbine few scenes were great.

i wish they had fleshed out cohagen and mathias more but they were really just plot devices anyway.

i wouldnt have paid for it but for some shit off apple tv i was pleased.

unexpectedly dense universe/world they presented. the shots of the city were really beautiful imo. removing the setting from Mars was a good idea. didnt mind the homages as there werent too many to be eye-roll worthy.

while most ppl are having gripes with the travelling thru a hole in the Earth thing, ive seen it pop up in a few other sci fi contexts so it wasnt as silly to me. in fact it was usually my favourite scenes whenever they took us on that journey. the initial trip early on in the film was done in a way that reminded me of those bits in "Cypher" (aka "Brainstorm": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284978) when he witnesses the weird brainwashing going on. felt similar. eery, even.

n i guess ill keep remaining in the minority on this but...i fuckn luv lens flares lol. i really do. lens flares and sci fi. i dig it.

It was a pretty film. I loved the visuals, the CGI and the landscapes.

The only part I hated was that damned tracking shot from the trailer though. It's pretty stupid.

The casting was meh. Farrell & Biel was barely there. I'm not sure how you cast Cranston and he not eat up scenery. Dude can play villainous (duh) and it seems like a wasted opportunity to be a bad guy.

Like I said. Meh. It was good. I'm probably not going to watch it again but I liked it.

i'm out.
