"The Amazing Spider-Man (Webb, 2012)"
Thu Jun-28-12 10:04 PM by bwood

First off I would like to say that when Andrew, Emma, and Martin Sheen were dominating their scenes especially when they're together.

Second I saw this in a really shitty fake IMAX and when it gets to the conclusion which was shot in IMAX 3D, it kinda diminished the effect.

Otherwise this is 10x better than Spider-Man 1, but let's be real it's not even sniffing Spider-Man 2. The way Peter Parker is portrayed in this reminds me of the comic more than what Raimi did in his first outing. Andrew is a way better Peter Parker than Dopey, I mean Tobey Maguire. The natural awkwardness and loneliness is handled better not by just Webb, but by Andrew as well. And I can see why Andrew and Emma are dating after shooting this. Their chemistry shines through as two people head over heels for each other. Emma portrays Gwen as someone you can easily fall in love with. Plus she's so smashable in this movie. The humor for the most part works. When making his wisecracks you shake your head in agreement like yea that's Spidey. Also, the fights are fucking great too. Spidey's not doing Matrix bullet dodges and shit, here he's an agile Spider. I also Love the dynamic between Flash and Peter in the 2ned half. It felt realistic.

With all that said, there's some parts that are pretty bad and a couple of scenes that don't work. First scene is the subway scene, and when you see it you'll know what I'm talking about. Fucking awful. Also, Uncle Ben's demise is terrible, just terrible. And the mid credits scene was pointless, they could've kept that.

The score is also pretty bad. Nothing memorable or exciting at all.

All in all, I liked it and would like to check it out on a real IMAX and not a LIEMAX. There's definite room for improvement, but as it stands this will be something to hold you over until Dark Knight Rises drops and/or isn't sold out. Very entertaining and fun ride at the movies.

Alot of the compliants I see from other reviews is that there's too much character devolpment and not enough action which is absurd to me. The character dynamics and relationships is what makes this thing stand out...

Too soon, I don't wanna spend major coin to watch ANOTHER origin story, and frankly - I can't support this.

The only reason they did this was to keep the rights for reverting back to Marvel.

I understand they did Sam dirty and since they didn't let him do SM4, Marvel should've gotten the rights back. But Sam is only batting 1 out of 3 for me so I don't feel bad. At all.

As far as the characters go, I prefer this over The Avengers.
The Avengers is probably one of my favorite comic book films of all time,
but left me not giving a damn about any of the characters. Especially Nick Fury,
who's not being done justice at all IMO.

At first I was disappointed that we're getting another origin story, but it actually
makes perfect sense after seeing it. Webb spends his time mapping out the origin
and building up the characters, and in the end you care about them.

This Peter Parker is way more believable, and a lot more like his comic/animated
version. I loved the wisecracks, the fact he actually carries his camera around,
the explanation for his technology etc.

There were indeed some parts that were terrible. I still don't like how The Lizard
looks, I think the skateboard was terrible too. Overall however I feel this is set up
for a way better sequel.

Missed the mid-credits scene though

You did yourself a favor by missing the mid-credits scene. Also, I rewatched Spider-Man 1last night and realized why again I didn't care for it for the past 10 years. And it hasn't aged well either.

I was not blown away by this at all. They did a solid job, but I wasnt very impressed. Better than Spidey 1 & 3, but not better than 2 with Doc Ock. Side note the scene after the credits was dumb & a waste of time.

All and all I think Dark Knight Rises will be better.

1) Keep the fucking mask on, for me. Yes, I understand the studio pays a lot of money for the actor and they don't want to hide his face, then have said actor not play Spider-man, Spidey wears a mask, deal with it.

2) There was way too many scenes that could have been left on the cutting room floor. The basketball scene, the football scene, the skateboard scene and just on overall slow as fuck moving movie. The Stan Lee scene might be the most memorable of the entire flick.

3) Uncle Ben = movie stealer. If you go see a Spidey movie and leave ranting about Uncle Ben that movie was ASS!!

4) To re-iterate point one..JUST KEEP THE FUCKING MASK ON. That had to be my biggest beef.

**edit add on**

5) The Lizard has to be the worst bad guy creation since, well...Green Goblin, but at least that was supposed to be cheesy.

6) The Gwen Stacey story was corny and not believable.

http://www.examiner.com/review/the-amazing-spider-man-a-superhero-film-for-the-ladies

^^^ my full review

Long story short: between the hunkification of Peter Parker, the girl-power-ness of Gwen Stacy, the abundance of emotional scenes (more crying than Spiderman 3!), and the relative shortage of actual action, I felt it was made with the female demographic more in mind than the typical comic book movie fan demographic. It all feels very familiar outside of those things, and I was left wanting.

Especially for teen girls. All of his affectations are cute, not dorky or lame in any way. It's not teen girls' fault the film is like this, it's the studio heads who clearly wanted a film designed to attract teen girls.

you find his affectations cute
fine
i absolutely did not

stop trying to tell teen girls what you think they like
studio heads obviously got it as wrong as you did
put their bad decisions on choices on their heads
not girls, teen girls or women

note
attempting to court the teen girl demo is not a problem
the problem is how you assume they did it

>studio heads obviously got it as wrong as you did

Primarily with kids under 18, who are giving it a higher CinemaScore than folks over 18. It's a movie for teens, like I said. Surveys taken before its release showed young women were far more interested in this film than in Brave, a film about a young woman!

And between what it'll make domestically this week and its already sizable international take, its worldwide box office will equal its production budget by Sunday.

This isn't like the Channing Tatum thing-- I'm not trying to claim one is objectively "hotter" than the other. Obviously there will be girls who don't like Garfield or Stone, etc. I'm claiming that the studios took a franchise aimed predominantly at teen boys and on every level, from casting to script to general tone, aimed it more at teen girls than the first go around. I don't see how that's wrong when surveys, exit polling, and box office all indicate that strategy worked.

I don't think we're disagreeing. The audience has zero impact on how a movie like this is made. Since it's a hit, they'll repeat this formula the next film, but other than that, it's all about what the creative folks think their target audience wanted.

They 100% tried to make Twilight with web shooters here. Garfield James Deans his way through every Peter Parker scene: smoldering with Gwen, teen angsty angsting it up with Ben & May. It's undeniable. This was Ultimate Spider-Man, teen girl accessible Spider-Man, cute-nerd "dangerous but sweet" Spider-Man.

Marc Webb was a horrible choice. at least Raimi had directed action scenes before. it's clear Webb was out of his league here.

the interpersonal stuff is, as expected, much better here than in the original trilogy. Gwen Stacy is a better character than Mary Jane and Emma Stone blows Dunst out the water. Garfield and Stone have great, believable chemistry together and it really works on screen. same for Aunt May and Uncle Ben...major upgrade.

everything else sucks.

the CGI on The Lizard is unforgivable. this is Sony's tentpole franchise and the villain looks like a PS2 cutscene. fucking horrible. like, confusingly abysmal. i don't know the story of this production...was it rushed? cuz all of the effects look half-assed.

the green screen work is just as bad. i don't get it...it's been over 10 years since the first Spider-Man and the effects are marginally better. what the entire fuck?

Webb falls on his face with the action in the movie too. same lazy, hyper-kinetic editing that makes it impossible to follow what the fuck is going on. i guess you would call the bridge scene the action centerpiece of the movie but it's instantly forgettable.

what moments stand out in this movie? i can't name any.

it gets worse as it goes along, too...the last act is a cluster fuck. the movie's about 30-45 minutes too long and i stopped caring about any of the characters about halfway through.

all of the concerns were validated...this is a movie no one wanted or needed.

damn near every bit of it (my only issue was Capt Stacy's turnover on Spidey, it felt forced)....

i didn't have a problem with any of the acting, or scenes, or sequences, or anything (other than the previously stated)......i thought it was better than Spidey 1 and 3, but i have to rewatch 2 to compare again....

i was not sold on Garfield or Emma at first, but after watching, i was with it all the way...

I'm sorry but this shit was just another movie. Nothing memorable at all. I'm not saying it was a piece of shit but there is nothing that stands out about the film in a significant way. It's like Secret Circle meets Spiderman. Eye candy for teen girls. Action was few and far between. Fight scenes were lame and some parts just made no sense.

this shit was fucking terrible for so many reasons that I don't feel like elaborating on right now. They still have yet to get Spidey down right. Piss-poor character development, shitty villain, way to many corny moments...

that bball scene? sheeeeeeeeeeeittttt

but it was pretty much what I expected

39. "Un-Amazing Spider-Man is solidly average"
In response to Reply # 0

Throughout the beginning of this solidly "just Okay" movie, I kept thinking and comparing how much better Raimi's Spidey 1 handled everything. His interactions with kids at school, his awkwardness, his relationships with May & Ben, his crush, getting bit, and most of all Ben's death. That stopped for a little once he got his powers and fought on the subway. I like the way Spider-Man fights in this one. He's, well, spidery. Hopping around, crouching and swinging from all angles, every limb moving like a creepy crawley, they got that right. However almost every other bit of the superhero part movie was a mis-step.

There were several moments when I was taken out of the reality of the movie and couldn't get invested due to the filmmaker's choices. Every scene on the rooftop or ledge of some skyscraper gave me no sensxe of real danger or palm sweatiness or excitement because it was so obviously faked. It looked nice but Spider-Man's 60 stories up and not one hair is blowing, its calm as shit...he fucking answers his cell phone and doesn't have to shout or put a finger in his other ear to hear. There was no consistency to his powers either. He wakes up violently from a water droplet yet later on Aunt May can sneak up on him. A schlubby cop can push him around and manhandle him out of a police station. He webs a car thief and the guy screams in pain yet later he dead eye's a 6 year old's chest, in mid free fall of about 30 feet, and the kid doesn't bat an eye. That kind of stuff in addition to a lot of pedestrian and mundane set-up scenes just took me out of any real investment. Like how into it I was when SPidey & Doc Ock fought along the buildings and elevated train in 2.

Garfield was shmacting it up at times but was overall solidly entertaining as Peter. I must admit, I am a late Emma Stone convert. I didn't like her in Zombieland but easy A won me over and she and Martin Sheen turned in the best performances. Rhys-Ifans whispered every single line of dialogue which got annoying and I was genuinely puzzled why he was even cast as Curt Connors until I saw him under the sewer doing his crazy half-man half-a-lizard shtick. I would have liked to seen more of that because he nailed it. Denis Leary wore more make up than every other actor put together and that was the most notable thing he did.

The entire 3rd act was stupid and I was ready to HATE the ending when she said to Peter "he made you promise didn't he?"...I really thought they were going to just gut the tragic romance/"but he really does love you" aspect, totally negating its value and importance, until that last line he utters in the classroom. That saved the ending for me.

C+, **1/2 our of *****, thumbs sideways, little man sitting calmly in his theater seat, box of popcorn full but not smiling....WHATEVER rating system you want to use this movie should be dead square right in the middle.

In response to Reply # 0

i'm firmly in the camp that spiderman didn't need to be rebooted...

not to say that Raimi's spiderman was great it wasn't at all...but it was fine for what it was.

this new version was just average...Andrew Garfield was great with the dramatic moments (of which there were many...i think too many since there wasn't near enough action, etc.)...but I just never bought into his skinny, needs to eat the smothered chicken/greens with fatback/mac and cheese/yams/cornbread with a large glass of sweet iced black tea and healthy doses of peach cobbler and red velvet cake ass when he was Spiderman fighting people. I just didn't...I'm thinking Spiderman powers and all, who is Garfield fucking up when he's only weighing *maybe* a buck 40 if that...

Emma Stone: I like her as an actress...but i wasn't feeling her at all either here. But, i'll take her over Bryce Dallas Howard anyday.

And I have to admit, neither one of them registered on the "hotness" meter at all...

everyone else was great to crap: Martin Sheen and Sally Field killed it as usual; Dennis Leary was more than serviceable but damn, he must have just dunked his face into the makeup box DAILY because he had that FULL FACE ON; Rhys Ifans was...there. Ifans is very hit or miss for me and he was a miss here...

I was surprised at how clean they made "New York City" (via an LA soundstage with NYC exteriors no doubt)...I was like damn, Peter's street is clean as fuck. Who knew Queens was *that* clean (runs and ducks for cover cause I know one of the NYC players will snatch my ass down for that remark)....

but overall, an average movie that was a good 20+ minutes too long.

If they just had to reboot the franchise, it was ok.

Lizard was corny looking, but not as corny looking as the Green Goblin was.

And Emma Stone was way better than Kirsten Dunst as the female lead.

So where's the fire? Not as enjoyable as The Avengers, but not awful. Decent action movie that won't break records but is worthy enough for a sequel.

The webbing wasn't used to heal but as a bandage.

If anything, it was appropriate that adults DID clap as it seemed like a Spidey flick for adults if that makes sense.

As someone who bought his first Spider-Man comic in 1974 I was pleased with how this turned out.

After the Avengers I was kinda happy this went lighter on action and more on character development. Thought the characters were much more fleshed out than in the previous 3 films combined. It made Uncle Ben's death much bigger in scope and the same will be true of Gwen (if they follow along with the books) Dug the twist on the origin as well as the return of the web cartridges... the scene where Lizard crushes them leaving Spidey in danger of falling to his death is something that played out in the comic more than a few times.

I felt like they got Peter right too. Everyone saying they "hunked" Peter up too much must not have read the book in the mid to late 70s... Once Pete lost the glasses and got with MJ he came into his own. The nerd angle was only really early on... yeah I know this is taking place in his nerdy high school days but what they did with the character wasn't totally out of left field.

I give it a solid 8 out of 10. Can't wait for the next one.

..but this certainly isn't amazing

and far from spectacular (c) fonzworth bentley

the cast was solid on paper, but never generated a spark on screen. with vets like field, leary, & sheen, one might assume that this film had a stable of anchors to hold it firmly in place. instead, lackluster performances (amid horrible writing) were all too frequent. unfortunately, the film isn't engaging enough to evoke compassion from the audience. while there were a few (and i'm bein' generous) comical quips, there was never a serious sense of danger or urgency.

not even durin' what should've been pivotal scenes (ie: the death of ben parker). its almost as if you could HEAR the director scream, "..ok, camera 2 give me a close up on uncle ben's look of surprise... camera 3, zoom in on the gun!.. aaaaaaand SCENE!.."

smh

sally field was completely wasted. if ever there's a woman in this world that can pull off sadness, its her. those cryin' eyes are priceless. yet, you barely see her in this (even though aunt may is crucial). where was her charm?

even worse, they cast a well-known wise-crackin' jerk as captain stacy, yet someone put a muzzle on leary. another wasted opportunity to inject some life into this film.

garfield wasn't terrible as parker, but his scenes with ifans/connors were damn-near painful. spidey needed a bit more wit (esp durin' fights). and speakin' of fights, these were as generic as you'll ever find.

one positive note was the score (not to be confused with the soundtrack), and that's not sayin' much. in an age where most modern movies are dominated by pop rock & hip hop hybrid anthems, this film took a page out of yesteryear and used actual orchestrated pieces to set the tone, reminiscent of "peter & the wolf."

while spiderman's costume was an upgrade, the cgi used for explosions & fire was sub-par. lol @ c. thomas howell's horrible acting. dude looked like he stepped right out of mayberry.

in the end, this reboot was unnecessary. you know its not a good sign when people leave the theater sayin' "they were better off shuttin' down this nonsense after spiderman 3."

like i said, i didn't hate it, but its not worth $20

In response to Reply # 0

He absolutely killed it imo. The perfect mix of awkwardness and emerging confidence, and played the emotional range extremely well. The rest of the cast was definitely solid but Garfield was by and far the standout...just a stellar performance, one of the realest reflections of teenagism that I can remember.

The heavy dose of character development was definitely welcomed and I enjoyed the movie for the most part, but can't say it left any kind of lasting impression on me.

Three things that stood out negatively: First, the score did not resonate with me at all. AT ALL. Felt like a Maroon 5 song, just overly cheesy and zero subtlety. Secondly, the uncle Ben death scene was just bad. Thirdly, Sally Field was wasted imo. Nothing substantial there for her.

Worth watching but outside of Garfield, nothing to write home about.

In response to Reply # 0

During the film after Curt Connors has transformed into the lizard the first time both he and Parker are at Oscorp. Connors said he gave all the staff a week off. Just as they leave Parker looks over a table and sees a Rat which looked like the size of a dog, it was eating something with flesh.

What was this about? clearly cross species genetics but why show it if its not going to play a more important role. Can it be the villain in the sequel? Or will it be totally forgotten?

thanks............but that was a clunky way of them to confirm Parker's suspicion about Connor's involvement as the lizard. This plot point could easily have been handled without the need for the rat.

... if Indian dude was about to test this serum on vets, and Connors was so gung ho to stop him on the bridge, but he got away after the bridge attack... why did we never see or hear about dude or Connors wanting to find dude again?

Oh, that's right. Because the movie sets up and drops storylines and plot points willy nilly.

Then again, I didn't give this movie much thought afterwards either. But yeah, his parents, Uncle Ben's Killer, testing on vets... many MANY points, and not trivial points, either, that simply went hanging for no good reason

... and it might be better than part 2. To be fair though, my hate for McGuire, Dunst, and the abortion that is Willem Dafoe's performance as Norman Osborne, is grain alcohol strong.

I didn't love the Amazing Spiderman, but at least I didn't loathe it. Sam Raimi's hammy take on ol' webhead never felt right to me.

Garfield played PP the right way: confused, determined, with a undercurrent of anger that kept reminding you of his unresolved childhood. I like his portrayal a lot more than Toby Mac's.

I liked the character development and the subtle commentary of technology. I liked the foreshadowing of Norman Osbourne. I liked the lizard, but he should not have talked. That was distracting.

I liked the fact that - already - we see tragedy casting a cloud of Peter's life. Love will always be complicated for him - and that's good. That's how it's supposed to be.

I liked the action but there was not enough. I want more of that in the sequel. I continue to enjoy Spiderman's love hate relationship with the people of New York. I like where they are going with this series. I want to see more.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

I feel like 1 gets shitted on unfairly here. Especially since everyone likes to jump on the "dark" hero bandwagon. Spider-Man 1 shits on the current in having the proper tone if nothing else.

I still feel McGuire was a better Parker, but Garfield did a bang up job. I do like the casting in Webb's version though.

I just didn't walk out of the theater feeling the way I did when I walked out of 1 and 2.

And the score was pretty annoying. I'm rarely that person that notices the score all that much, but there were scenes where it was pretty intrusive and made the film feel like a cheap telenovela. Just awful.

Plus somethings were just corny. Like him bending the football goal post with the football. Even with the standard suspension of belief required to enjoy a movie, we all know the ball would have bounced harmlessly away. Some other mistakes were made that way too.

It felt a bit tiresome sitting through the origin story again. I feel like they need to just go James Bond with the series now and just recast as necessary, not go back to formula.

I did like them having Gwen Stacy as the love interest. Other than that, Aunt May got short shrift. She's usually Pete's anchor and she got limited time here.

It just wasn't all that thrilling. It's good, but not thrilling, breath-taking or anything. There's no "oh shit that was cool as hell" moment in the film. It was basically Spider-Man by the numbers. Only the casting sorta saved this film.

So all in all, good effort, but I think the studio, the series and the characters would have been better served making Spider-Man 4 with a new lead rather than going back and rebooting it. It doesn't actually improve on anything from the last series.

Starting with Garfield and Stone's chemistry, which I bought completely into

Problem with Garfield's Peter Parker is that he's all over the place, character-wise; he's, at the times the script calls for it: cocky, sad, brooding, goofy, tough, weak, light, and dark. I mean, yeah, you could say that he's supposed to be the typical moody American teenage boy or whatever, but I wasn't buying it. Yes, this is a hero origin story where a boy has to become a man.

I also wasn't buying a lot of the interaction between Garfield and Martin Sheen. A lot of the story was fairly sloppily laid out, with way too many coincidences for my tastes.

Denis Leary was wasted, I didn't care about Curt Connors, and for all of the hullabaloo about certain superhero movies being too long, this one was certainly bloated.

All that said, the action wasn't hard to follow (even with the coincidences and forgotten characters) and the "relationship shit" between Garfield and Stone worked for me

This is indeed a superhero origin story for girls, and there's nothing wrong with that

And, oh yeah, this should be pointed out:

and they made spidey more...angular and acrobatically weird in this film, which I dug.

There could have been more action, cuz spidey didn't really fight the lizard, so much as dodge him.

The cgi on spidey was pretty good tho.

Worth the 3d price, if you can...it was very effectively used, IMO

I'm hating fuck it:

They could've trimmed a good 25 minutes off the time by deleting unnecessary scenes.

Let me get this straight: a high school student sneaks into an internship with cameras all around, goes missing on some Willy Wonka shit and NO ONE notices? No cameras catch dude sneaking into the restricted area?

The train scene needs to go as well. It was totally unnecessary and rendered moot by the Peter talking to his grandparents.

Why was there an 8 minute skateboard scene?

Peter's test run with his web shooters needs to go.

Peter didn't stop a theif from stealing at store and didn't alert the cashier. This scene had more emotional impact the first time around.

Where's the "great power" quote? This is that good bullshit.

They could've cut all of the YouTube spider-man scenes.

Why they leave the slumdog millionaire dude hanging on a bridge?

Peter jumps off a cops balcony and NO ONE notices?

It's totally unbelievable that Peter's high school had no cameras AND no one saw him run towards the lizard.

Do the web shooters filter Peter's webs or generate them?

Let me get this straight: The NYPD unmasks spider-man and he isn't at least taken into custody later? Shit was pointless.

GTFOH with that scene after the credits.

This movie was long and almost 1/4 of it was unnecessary. However, Toby old and they trying to get that "twilight" money. Now would be a good time to redo Venom or Chameleon.

Of course, all the bitter, "i'm-not-racist-i-just-want-the-character-to-look-like-he-does-in-the-comic-books" nerds are all up in arms about another black actor playing a historically white fictional character. They were mad when Idris Elba was cast in Thor, and they are mad now.

On the flipside, where are these highly opinionated "non-racists" when a Latino-looking, real life CIA agent with a diverse ethnic backround is played by a white man. Or how about when a real life Asian-American blackjack genius from MIT is played by a white British guy?

And they want to get mad about a fictional, hand-drawn character.

Don't even get me started on White Jesus!
