They're jsut supposed to keep it movin just cause Jay knows whos dick to suck on? I'd still be mad too and I'd talk shit every once and a while to let that chin chillin mfkr know it too. People do this ALL the time. If you been at a shit job with someone, even after you move on you still get together every once and a while and talk about how shitty it was at that place.

You can share one with Jay. You wanna condone dickriding then go ahead. I'm not a proponent of it I can tell you that. Explain to me how NBC tells Jay to bounce, way in advance, but keeps him on IN FRONT OF CONAN. How in the fuck was Conan supposed to get his feet under him. NBC is way in the wrong for this, probably more than anyone, but you can't deny that Jay is a buster. He tries to come off like he's just along for the ride but he's always got his sights set. This shit is as bad as fuckin another mans wife dude. It's deep. You wanna be contrarian, go ahead. But real dudes see this shit for what it is.

dave acting like he ain't try to get rid of jay in the early 90s is a lie

conan pressured NBC for that show and KNEW they'd have to push out jay

dogg, jay just won.

and for real, if conan didn't FUCKING SUCK as host of the tonight show, the crown jewel of late night TV, none of this would matter. the muhfucka BROKE the tonight show...it was a machine and he BROKE IT.

and all these comedy snobs were hatin on jay without even thinking. that's what disgusts me. people act like jay is a some big sellout and the black sheep of comedy. nah, he's just the jay-z of comedy, if you will...IT'S JUST FUCKIN BUSINESS, DOGG!!! jay functions as a fucking adult and the rest of these clown be poo-pooing like he ruining the party. kimmel tries to come off as some fuckin comedy anarchist...like he's sooooo irreverent...fuck outta here, dogg...you be in them network meetings and the suits done told your ass NO plenty of times when you come to them with "controversial" bits. these idiots ain't breaking the mold and they just mad at jay because he don't bother tryna break the mold...he went the other day. jay chose to completely conform to the aesthetic laid out by allen, paar and carson AND HE FUCKIN PERFECTED...something dave and conan are completely incapable of.

yeah, they FUNNIER than jay, but they just not better at hosting the fucking tonight show on the national broadcasting company.

get over it, you stupid ass hipsters. always swimming with the cultural current, basing your opinions of people, shows and events on how close they are to the bullseye in the back of a fucking entertainment weekly.

shit is so disgusting. why can't people think for themselves?

>conan pressured NBC for that show and KNEW they'd have to push
>out jay

The contract giving The Tonight Show to Conan was signed 5 years before he actually got the job. There was plenty of time for Jay, NBC, and Conan to prepare for an easy transition. In other words, it's not like it caught Jay by surprise - it was assumed that Jay would retire after 17 years as host.

>and for real, if conan didn't FUCKING SUCK as host of the
>tonight show, the crown jewel of late night TV, none of this
>would matter. the muhfucka BROKE the tonight show...it was a
>machine and he BROKE IT.

C'mon. You know that's only *half* true. You cannot ignore the fact that Leno was tanking so hard in his prime time slot that NBC affiliates were seriously threatening to jump ship.

This really isn't even a plea cop - the truth is that Jay was killing them in the 10:00 - 11:00 time slot, and they needed to get him out of there. If they outright canned him, they would have had to buy out his massive contract, so it would have saved them 10s of millions of dollars to just stick his show back after the news. That's why the initial proposal was to give Jay a half-hour show and have Conan keep The Tonight Show which would air from 12:00 - 1:00.

Granted, Conan's ratings were down too, no argument there, but if Jay bounced from the network entirely, they would have continued to ride with Conan. The truth is that the affiliates weren't complaining because the late night ratings were bad, they were complaining because the prime time ratings were bad, and THAT was why NBC needed to shake things up.

>HE FUCKIN PERFECTED...something
>dave and conan are completely incapable of.

I grant you that. But by the same token, I'd argue that Conan and Dave did something Jay is incapable of, which is generate a cult following of dedicated fans and earn the respect of their peers.

People watch Jay, but you can't even argue that Conan and Dave don't have much more loyal fans. And in terms of respect from peers, Jay obviously doesn't have much of it, as evidenced by what seems like the entire comedy community always ribbing him. And don't play the "they jealous" card either, because Carson was in the exact same position and he was REVERED. Honestly, it all boils down to:

>yeah, they FUNNIER than jay,

You said it yourself. If you yourself agree that Jay is less funny then some of these other dudes, why is it so heretical for people to say they like those dudes better than Jay?

>but they just not better at
>hosting the fucking tonight show on the national broadcasting
>company.

I think a lot of people, when watching a comedy show, just want it to be funny. I don't really care who's a "better host" in terms of running a smooth show, I'd rather watch the show that's funnier, more entertaining, edgier, etc.

That being said, I agree with your basic point that Jay is better at hosting the tonight show. It's because he probably makes a conscious effort to appeal to a broad audience. Smart move from a business perspective, and he's found a lot of success doing it, so more power to him. That doesn't mean he has the *best* show though.

Hating on Leno is not a new culture phenomenon, nor is it one in which solely hipsters engage. Christ, Garry Shandling was needling him 20 years ago on The Larry Sanders Show.

jay is a better HOST. i've been over this with you dudes too many times. talk show hosts only spend about 30% of the show being "funny"...the rest is about being a good interviewer and highlighting the GUESTS...like, you STILL don't fuckin get this?

and you know what funny? jay will murder both those dudes at stand-up. nah, don't be mad. he just would.

In response to Reply # 29

Overrated in terms of being an indicator of ratings? That's obvious, because you yourself said Leno is less funny, and yet he still does better ratings, so there. I understand why Leno gets better ratings. I have no beef with Leno or your premise (I agree that them still talking about it is a little tired at this point). I just prefer Conan (and Dave) overall.

My main reason for even responding above was because I thought you oversimplified the sequence of events and casually omitted that Leno's prime time show was a massive failure. That was really the catalyst for everything that followed, much more so than Conan's poor ratings.

As for the standup argument, you could be right. I actually saw The Tonight Show in person about 10 years ago and Leno was WAY funnier when he was warming up the crowd before the show than he typically is during the show. I've never seen Dave do standup and I'm not sure Conan's material is well-suited for standup...

"Leno especially loved to tell one story about his early days as Tonight Show host. He was at this post at home, as usual, writing jokes for the next day's monologue, when he turned on the TV and saw a competitor. 'There he was sitting at the Lakers game,' Jay recalled. 'And I thought, 'Got ya! I'll have a monologue tomorrow night and you won't.' For Jay, the job always seemed to be as much about the self-abnegation involved in the effort as the effort itself: 'It just seems like common sense. If you go to a party, or go out drinking, I win. It doesn't seem that hard to understand. I'm amazed at people who can't get that.'"

In response to Reply # 34

Other hosts take 6-8+ weeks off year, Jay takes 4.

At one point, he asked NBC to let his writers and crew take the time off, hire a temporary team and let him host for 52 weeks. They refused. Meanwhile he's still flying across the country and doing stand-up shows on the weekend with regularity.

This is the guy who would drive down to New York from Boston when he was in college every night trying to get in on an open mic night in the city. Sometimes he'd get on, sometimes he wouldn't. Regardless, he'd drive back up to Boston overnight, handle his business during the day, turn around and drive back to New York that night.

He has outworked every comedian in his generation everyday for the last 40 years. I respect the hell out of that.

I agree with you 100%, and I absolutely respect his grind. At the end of the day, however, when I'm deciding which channel to flip to, I'm going with whose brand of comedy I prefer, not who I who is the harder worker or the "better talk show host." I think that's a perfectly legitimate position.

The only place I might disagree with you a little (and this is probably just semantics) is when you said being funny is overrated. I don't think it is. Jay's brand of humor is much more palatable for the mainstream, and I think that is the KEY reason why he does better ratings. (That not a knock on him - you're talking to a guy who loves The Beatles and Jay-Z, so I obviously have no beef with mainstream shit.)

Conan's humor: Masturbating bears, holding flashlights to his face singing out the year 2000, showing clips of Walker Texas Ranger, and having a puppet dog insult people.

Jay's humor: Showing typos that inadvertently create suggestive and/or comical wordplay, and asking dumb pedestrians basic questions about current events and watching them get it wrong.

Leno is easier for most folks to digest. They arent' looking for quirky & ironic stuff or sarcastic and cynical stuff. I think a lot of people (like my father, for example) watch the monologue and the first bit after the news and go to bed. I don't think the actual "hosting" (i.e. talking to the guests, etc.) is as big a deal as the first 20 minutes of the show.

Granted, I don't think leno is *that* funny AT ALL...and I'm most definitely in the audience of folk who watch Letterman or Conan because they're funnier....

*BUT* yea, I get there's bitterness, and to a point, there should be, but I think it might be time for folk to move on.

Letterman went HOARD for Leno's ass back in the 90s when folk were fighting to take over the tonight show once Carson bit it.

Letterman was *and* still *IS* legendary for that.

Conan was no better when he tried to jockey for the show in 2010...

They all have their own shows and all can co-exist in the same pond and get it done.

But, Leno is still winning. Conan is winning. Letterman is winning. Kimmel is winning. Even Fallon's non-funny ass IS WINNING.

But, y'all still bitter after 2010 and neither of you are acknowledging what is BEHIND your bitterness? that it's really more than Leno, but it's most definitely the fact that you both FAILED at getting his spot?

let's *really* put it out there aka the real reasons why y'all hate Leno.

The clowning was funny as hell when the shit was going down a couple years ago. Now, when Conan and Letterman are NOT hurting for money? move on...really, move the fuck on.

im very sensitive to pile-ons and bandwagoning in pop culture. It really annoys me. I was guilty of it too in this particular case until I read a GQ interview with jay a few years ago. I even posted about it on this board. I got an idea of what Jay is all about and it mad me like him on a basic human level.

I don't really like Dave. I identify with his cynicism, but sometimes he comes off as a flat out bully and people don't wanna be bothered with all that ALL the time. Like, at this point, shittin on Paris Hilton isn't edgy, dogg...it's like punching a rabbit.

I KNOW I don't like Conan now. He is an entitled weeny.

But Jay? The dude that don't NEED to be liked by his peers, because he's comfy in his own skin and *seems* ABOVE the idea of being some tortured comedic soul...like, Jay knows that whole schtick and rejects it...you don't have to SUFFER because you're gifted. It's BS.

Yes. I remember that article...I read it, and I did have more respect for him. Like most people, dude saw an opportunity and took it (taking over the tonight show)...nothing wrong with that.

Yea. His schtick has gotten real old and I used to love Letterman and would watch him all the time. Now, I don't even bother because its the same old bs.

>I KNOW I don't like Conan now. He is an entitled weeny.

He had the expectation that, once he was in the Tonight Show chair, he'd be allowed to roll until he didn't want to anymore. Which, based on the history of the show, he was completely justified in feeling. Especially given that NBC had a prior history with giving both he on Late Night and his predecessor on the Tonight Show plenty of leeway to find their feet and gain an audience. Don't forget, Jay was losing to Dave for the first two years after he took over the Tonight Show. There's no reason to believe Conan couldn't have done the same, though Dave isn't going to ever host another Oscar telecast again.

and again...no one was going to WAIT for conan to turn it around. I mean, obviously...you saw what happened.

He took over a franchise that wasn't broken and he broke it. Losing to Dave is one thing...getting to worst ratings in the show's ENTIRE HISTORY is another.

before affiliates COULD drop the show, and NBC didn't want him running to Fox.

Either way, Jay at 10 was tanking HARD, and that was affecting Tonight just as much as the transition to a new host during a time when television ratings are VERY different and the show had double the competitors of 1993.

no one will even remember jay at 10. it's TV trivia. this is about conan flopping with the TONIGHT SHOW. that's his legacy.

Before the move to the Tonight show.

NBC kept Leno to protect themselves. Considering how bad the rest of their schedule is tanking you can't really blame them.

It was a complicated mess, but I can't stand when people try to take all the blame from Conan. His hands are dirty as hell for putting the pressure on what was a good thing. I understand his not wanting to be on his show his whole life, but Leno earned the right to decide when his time was up.

....the entire CONCEPT of Jay Leno being the TS host all these years is still as ridiculous as it was back in the day ....at the end of the day everything worked out fine for all parties involved ..but Leno is just as bland, unfunny and poke-funable as ever

Stole, earned-- potato, potahto.

They both had dreams of inheriting the Tonight Show and hosting it until old age a la Carson, and a less funny hardworker showbizzed them out of their dreams.

Just like I don't hate Jay for winning, I don't hate Dave and Conan for being bitter. Even if they didn't talk about it, we all know that when they're in the same room with each other, the giant Jay elephant is present in the background.

I'd rather him be bitter and bitching STILL if it means he seems like a genuine person. When he was explaining to Conan how much he "enjoyed" the whole period of time when the Conan vs Jay controversy was going on, I was smiling like a motherfucker.

i'm not judging the integrity and character of the two men based on who's funnier. given what we know...dave would lose...by a lot.

People hate Jay because he wins, hate Dave because he's bitter and hate Conan because he's still talking about it. This is just the reality and it will stay this way until they croak.

As a Conan fan, I will say it might've worked out for the better because the over 40's were never going to get him. Dave and Jay have good things going and it's not like Jay is winning by a huge margin, isn't it just like 100,000 people at this point?

And like .1 ratings share in the 18-49 demographic.

It's close, but Jay has kept that margin fairly consistently. Also consider that at the same time:

-Jay's show is cheaper to produce
-Universal retains the rights
-Jay is generally regarded as less of a headache to deal with

I present this advertisement because I assume the vast majority of PTP, like me, have never intentionally watched Piers Morgan in their lives. Regis Philbin will be guest hosting.
