Starts this weekend. Honestly, when I first saw the trailer, I thought it looked good. Not great, but good enough. But I've really enjoyed all of David Wain's other films, he showed he can do the mainstream thing with Role Models, and I just listened to an interview with him on Bullseye that has my expectations for this ticking upwards.
Anyone seen it yet? Planning to?

Never reaches the highs of Role Models, and it's definitely no Wet Hot, but it's enjoyable. Paul Rudd really shines here, as does everyone in the commune. Anniston is a good sport.
Both Key and Peele are in it, and quite funny, as are all the Stella boys as sexist newscasters.

Agreed, it's definitely no Wet Hot, but the supporting cast is really strong. Joe Lo Truglio killed it, even beyond the obvious physical comedy of his role. I also wouldn't have minded more of Ken Marino and Michaela Watkins' couple. Rudd definitely did his thing.
The last third was strange. As much as it was obvious he was in love with Anniston, I still never really bought Seth turning into such a huge douchebag. Also, she seemed perfectly content living by the rules of the commune, so it was a little wierd to see Anniston just head into town to get a steak like that.
But still a damn funny movie. There's a lot more to offer than the ad campaign's pitch of "big city folks living amongst hippies? THASCRAZY!"
And I loved seeing the Stella guys harass the newscaster.

It was too neat a wrap-up in the end, considering how Jennifer Aniston's character had developed. And the part with Seth's character also seemed too neat as well, and not in line with his character up to that point. I guess they needed to get an actual conflict in there somehow, but it was a little forced.
It would have been better IMO if Paul Rudd's character went back to NY to be successful, but the wife stayed behind. As is, the ending was just too typical.
Still, funny stuff. More Ken Marino would have been fun. He's really, really good at being a thoughtless dick.
And as a side note, there's one character that I SWEAR was written for Jane Lynch, but she might have turned it down for scheduling or something. I have to check imdb on that...

Jane Lynch in this movie might have made all the difference for me.
I thought it was funny but forgettable, with a meh ending. Jane Lynch's involvement would have raised the bar A LOT. Especially since this is the kind of movie that she usually shines in.
Kerri Kenney was okay, but obviously Lynch is a much higher caliber actress.
Given her part in Role Models, plus one or two other Apatow projects (who produced this one), I bet Wain at least wrote the part with her in mind...

I don't consider myself a Wain fan but I liked it more than his other works I have seen.
First two acts were gold. Happy to see good performances by Key and Peele and this is Rudd at his best.
They crammed a lot in the final act. I didn't buy that Anniston would sleep with Seth so quickly (I felt like they left a scene out where Rudd threatens to sleep with Malin Akerman (eva) if Anniston was so intent on staying at the commune). Also didn't buy Seth being a fraud at the end. he could have unraveled just a little less dramatically.
Otherwise Solid Comedy. Is there really not an audience in the theater for films like this?
