"Am I the only one seriously disappointed in movies this year?"
On some "I can't think of a year that was worse" vibe? I'm going over my list of films this year, and the movies are just BAD. I don't mean on some "I didn't like it, therefore it wasn't good." I mean on some "How do you have 4 gladiator movies in 1 year and none of them deliver?" There were definitely good movies out this year, don't get me wrong, but the overall quality was just not there. Spare me the general PTP snarky cynicism, just let me know if anyone agrees with me.

There was a good number of smart movies that audiences didn't connect with - IN THE LOOP, STATE OF PLAY, A SINGLE MAN. The action movies were better - TAKEN, DISTRICT 9, SHERLOCK HOLMES. The "interesting but don't work for whatever reason" movies were in huge abundance - JENNIFER'S BODY, ME & ORSON WELLES, THE LOVELY BONES, THE ROAD, BAD LIEUTENANT, BROKEN EMBRACES, WATCHMEN, DUPLICITY, THE LIMITS OF CONTROL, THE INFORMANT By mid August, you could go the theatre and see the best work by a C student or lazy work by an A student. And 2009 had two of the funniest movies of the last ten years: HANGOVER and BLACK DYNAMITE. 2009's batting average is much higher than 2011's.

There aren't any No Country For Old Men/Children of Men instant classics, but the depth of movies that are no worse than a B in my book is pretty impressive.

I'm not seeing many movies I'm going to come back to. Not even that many on some "I'm in the middle of doing laundry - I got 20 minutes to kill - Oh snap this movie is on - I'll just be late getting my clothes."

...and was coming up short. There were plenty of fine movies: a few of the superhero movies, Fast Five was better than expected...
But I didn't get choked up, pissed off, grab my sides laughing - nothing that stuck to the ribs.
I also recently thought that like my interest in modern music, maybe my interest in movies is also waning? Because people seem to be loving movies that I mostly shrug at.
I look forward to loving a movie soon though, because I am long overdue.

as much as any from 2009-10. but the movies after that are interchangeably meh -- and I really don't have a strong desire to watch them again. I've still got five or six I really want to see, but the mid-tier is very mediocre this year.
only movie that really grabbed me was 13 Assassins. that shit is a 4/4.5 to me... maybe add Devil's Double, but most of my top 10 borders on the 3.5 area. i mean i haven't seen most of the indy shit or big dramas this year: Martha Mary Magdalene, Melencholia, Shame, Money Ball, The Descendents, Ides of Marcg, Girlfriend, We Need to Talk About Kevin, but than again most of those have had mixed or only good not great reviews. since i'm off for two weeks I'll more than likely catch near all of them and i'll get back to you

Because these are the movies that are supposed to save the year.

A few of my favorite movies this year were artsy fartsy: Melancholia, Margin Call, We Need To Talk About Kevin, 3/4s of Tree of Life. The people who sip of frappamochachinos should have had plenty to enjoy this year.
And you're right, those who like mainstream shit had plenty of stuff to enjoy too. M:I-4, Tintin, Hugo, Rango, Captain America, Super 8, and (you're right) Real Steel are all really enjoyable.

I'm good off of "Warrior" alone.
But I also dug the shit out of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", "X-Men", "Fast Five", "The Devil's Double", "Contagion".
I am more than pleased with this year.
The year was light on comedies though. A lot of shit just ain't funny. Funniest shit I saw was either "Bridesmaids" or that fantasy joint with Portman and Franco.
"Horrible Bosses" was tight too.
Damn, and I almost forgot about "Drive" and "Ides of March".
