and i hope others add on:

Classic 12:

Margaret Atwood The Handmaid's Tale/The Edible Woman (both are classics; choose one)

James Baldwin Another Country/Giovanni's Room (both are considered classics; choose one)

Ralph Ellison Invisible Man

Edith Wharton The Age of Innocence

Toni Morrison The Bluest Eye

Salman Rushdie The Satanic Verses/Midnight's Children (choose one)

Octavia Butler Kindred (sci fi classic)

Wilkie Collins The Moonstone (THE novel on which the detective story was born)

Mark Twain Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn

any of the various Greek tragedies

the thing about "classic" anything is that you will have multiple lists since a "classic" novel or literary text is different for each person.

But, i'm sure others will chime in...

In fact, that and the Musketeers books series (it goes in this sequence: The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne) would be a big load off your list. All these are classic and amazing. Its like indiana jones with swords. Especially Count of Monte Cristo. That book is like a prototype for adventure, imo. Alexander Dumas was an amazing writer.

Wordman's 12 Novels For The Good Brother Licke To Read In 2012

*THE THOUSAND AUTUMNS OF JACOB DE ZOET by DAVID MITCHELL - prove you know good contemporary classics by reading the best cat doing it right now.

*THE AGE OF INNOCENCE by EDITH WHARTON - no one reads this book anymore.

*THINGS FALL APART by CHINUA ACHEBE - read it in the fall, the first or second day after the leaves change, that first day you could call cold. Read it outside, in one sitting, with no interruptions.

*THE GREAT GATSBY by F. SCOTT FITZGERALD - always good to read this every couple years.

*WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS by WILSON RAWLS - can't go wrong with a book about a boy and his dogs. When folks ask me what a novel - as an artform - can do that other artforms can't, I tell them to read this book and tell me if any other artform can deliver an ending like this.

*THE MALTESE FALCON by DASHIELL HAMMETT - no pulp does it better.

*REBECCA by DAPHNE DU MAURIER - I haven't read a female author who doesn't lift from this. Your favorite movies steals from her work.

*OBLIGATORY SCIENCE FICTION ENTRY. I'd recommend one of two approaches, depending on your familiarity with sci-fi. If you're someone who reads sci-fi regularly, then just read one of the following during the year. If you're a bit of a novice to the genre, I'd recommend taking out an entire month to read a bunch of sci-fi. Here are some suggestions for the latter: SPOOK COUNTRY by WILLIAM GIBSON, one of the few legends of the genre still working; anything by PHILIP K. DICK; DHALGREN by SAMUEL R. DELANY if you can handle it; WARM WORLDS AND OTHERWISE by JAMES TIPTREE JR if you can find it.

*MOBY DICK by HERMAN MELVILLE - hard pressed to think of any book written in English that's better.

*THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY by PATRICIA HIGHSMITH - somehow represents and defies the multiple genres it belongs to.

*LES MISERABLES by VICTOR HUGO - beautifully epic, completely ignore the abridged version. Reward your inner reader and emmerse yourself in the world its 1200+ pages creates. The best week you spend reading will be the week you read this book.

*THE PROPHET by KHALIL GIBRAN - an absolute treasure. Not a long read, but one that sticks with you long after it ends.

*AQUEMINI, DELAWARE by ME - if I get it finished in time this year.

For real, can't thank cats here enough for recommending his work. Dude is amazing. Got about a one hundred pages left, then it's on to "Gatsby" for the PTP book club.

I'll also include whether or not I have already read it:

Ellison - Invisible Man (haven't)

Morrison - The Bluest Eye (have) though I too would prefer to read another

Twain - Tom Sawyer (have) I voted this instead of Huck Finn cause I reread that this year already, but I would have no problem reading it again

Dostoyevsky - Brothers Karamazov (haven't) I vote this instead of War & Peace cause while I haven't read it I would rather reread Anna Karenina

Dumas - Count of Monte Cristo (haven't)

Achebe - Things Fall Apart (have) May be my favorite book.

and my votes for ones not mentioned yet

Bester - The Stars My Destination (have) My sci-fi pick.

Mingus - Beneath the Underdog (have)

Iceberg Slim - Tar Baby (haven't) Read "Pimp" in high school, never got around to this one.

Haley - Roots (haven't)

Goldman - The Princess Bride (have) Let's have some fun

Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse 5
or
Heller - Catch-22 Haven't read either of these, even though I've read a good amount of Vonnegut.

I'd also be okay with us reading a McCarthy, but preferably not "The Road." I've read all the McCarthy I wanted to so any other than "The Road" is good with me.

As a note for the "selection committee, even though I've mentioned a few long novels here I think we should try to keep most of our selections fairly short as I know I and many other people have to carve out time to read. The longer ones we can make summer/holiday reads since that is when most of us will have a little more time to devote to them.

I would
>rather reread Anna Karenina

I hear/read so many great things about that novel yet I've been reluctant to give it a shot because of the subject matter. I don't think I'll dig it if it's some "woe is me" yarn about a women leaving her husband. Even if that were the case, I'm not saying it couldn't be an amazing novel, but it's *probably* not something I'd really enjoy.

Never read any Tolstoy.

Interested to hear what you, or anyone else here, thought about the book ...

I reached a point in the novel when I was so sick of Anna and her lover I was openly complaining about her to any person who had the misfortune of talking to me.

Yet...
I loved it.

It's like when you watch a serial drama and one or more of the characters starts to get on your nerves: you'll complain about them, ask aloud "why are you doing this," constantly critique them, and then turn around excited about the next week.

One of the great things about "Anna Karenina" though is that there are so many fully realized characters that every reader will have a favorite. The end of the novel even turns the story almost completely away from Anna and to Levin, who is either my favorite or second favorite character.

There are elements of the book I do not love: Anna started getting on my nerves and, like most of the Russian literature I have read (which admittedly isn't that much), there are dry stretches in which characters talk about politics and farming techniques, but there is such rich character development and psychological Truth around these elements I found myself always pushing through, never worried that I would put it down.

In summation,
even though there is a healthy dose of "woe is me," there are many other elements to the novel to love and Anna's mindstate is a great conversation starter.

I'm all for it.

This is one of the elements I loved about Dostoevsky's "The Idiot." The characters in that novel were so ALIVE, and they yank you into their world.

LMAO at this:

The book will be the Great Gatsby. I like the note of keeping the books on the shorter side in order to include as many as possible so people can carve out time to read them.

Also, this book will be a movie in december of next year so it seems appropo to begin in one medium a means to end in another.
