More on this one later, but for now let me say that this was a beautiful film, with stellar performances all around, starting with the lead actress, Adepero Oduye, to Aasha Davis (for my Friday Night Lights heads, she was the bipolar girl whom Smash dated), right on down to Kim Wayans. Yep, Bonita Buttrell did her thing, even if I thought her character was a bit too "stock."
Yes, it's another quirky black independent film... but this time with lesbians! And Spike Lee as an Executive Producer!
And in case anyone wants to try to compare this film with Precious, just be aware that the director Dee Rees is aware that you'll want to do so and says that you're being reductive.
Beautiful flick.

wonderful performances from the entire cast. well directed, well shot, well acted. focus features is going hard for this film too. everyone check it out when it's released in theaters in december.
Was glad to see it wasn't sure what I was walking into but was surprised to see Kim and glad she did a good job
Light touch on the script I liked it alot ~~~~ When you are born, you cry, and the world rejoices. Live so that when you die, you rejoice, and the world cries. ~~~~ You cannot hate people for their own good.

i thought it was pretty straight and didn't try to be quirky like a lot of indie films try to be. only thing i noticed was the shots were really tight so you could never tell the locations but it did look like parts of Fort greene Brooklyn. probably budget reasons. -------- <--------- my cousin www.richardlouissaint.com photobloggin' it: http://blog.richardlouissaint.com

Enjoyed it. Kim Wayans was great but my favorite characters were the lead & her dad. Great performances all around. The mother-daughter dynamic did remind me of Precious. However, I thought this movie was better; more layers/dimensions to the characters....
And still is believable as a teenager, she got them good genes, shit. I remember watching South of Nowhere, she was in her early 30s then, liked her since then. Plus, SHE GOT THEM THAAAAAANGS(c)Damon Waynes Jr.
Very good film 3.5/5.

damn near almost cried at a couple of scenes.
great acting. beautifully shot. well rounded characters. perfectly executed plot/narrative
edit: also really enjoyed the soundtrack, nice change of pace for Black film and independent movies in general. I agree with GD though that the poetry could've been left out, even thought the final poem was appropriate for the character and "message" of the film
