I had already bought a copy of Le Samourai a few weeks ago after watching it on Netflix and realizing I had to have it in my collection. After becoming a fan of Le Samourai I had to check out some of his other stuff , I'm even naming one of my main characters in my first novel Jeff Costello..haha.

I really wish that people who review movies and criticize the quality of the dvd would say which copy they have, even if, at the time of the review, there's only one available.
I've been wanting to buy Diva and I'm having a hell of a time figuring out which copy to buy because of this. I was reminded of it by the one review of Insignificance. The whole point of Criterion is that they're high quality, right?

Basically. I think the only Criterion I've ever read complaints about (quality-wise) is the The Last Emperor, and that's because it uses an undesired re-cut aspect ratio and some (or all) copies have a monaural audio track due to a production error.
I've honestly heard nothing about this film beyond the basics of it being one of film's greatest flops, but that review really piqued my interest, and damn does it look gorgeous.

Like Someone In Love - EVERY time I try to watch this movie - online, bootleg, what have you - it's without subtitles. This is probably my only chance to see it, IN ENGLISH, for less than $13. also, try using coupon code "BFRIDAY14" friday through sunday for 30% off one item. coupon codes didn't used to apply to criterion collection in past sales, but i used a different, less valuable one the other day successfully, so it's worth a shot.

i have this one (as part of their 4 samurai classics set on dvd). not my favorite kurosawa film, but i'm in the minority there. still great.

this was the one i referred to in my above reply. at one point i realized how odd it will be to see it in blu-ray since i recall it being pretty lo-fi looking. even if having it in 1080p is overkill, the supplements (short films and interviews) sold me on it.
Every time I see these posts, I always go to the site and sit on buying anything, this time though I think it's time to pull the trigger to get a taste of these classics AND Criterion releases in general.
they really get film restoration and the kind of supplements that film nerds like.
i would recommend going to their web site and browsing their long list of titles. if there is one you've seen before and enjoyed, you would probably enjoy what they did with it on their release.

they do put out some contemporary titles. they have a huge crush on wes anderson, and they effectively licensed the "criterion collection" banner to put out the curious case of benjamin button (which can retail reeeeally cheap because i think the studio sets the pricing on that one instead of criterion). some people find it odd that they put out a criterion collection of robocop (the original). personally i kinda want the one for repo man. mostly they specialize in classics, foreign films, and arthouse, but they do surprise.
