This might could be my first post in PTP. This is probably the 5th or 6th thread I've started on OKP in my LIFE. my LIFE people.

Anyhow I randomly picked this book up on a whim last week when I was grabbing a newspaper for a friend. This book split my wig. It'd been on my mind for 5-6 months (maybe from PTP?) and I saw it at the bookstore and was like "yeahhh buddy."

I don't even know where to begin. Just finished it this morning.

If you haven't heard of it, check the site because it in and of itself is dope.

If you have heard of it, discuss.

If you've read any of Thompson's other work, let me know what it do because I'm thinking of adding some of it to my to-read list.

There's just way too much going on in my head for me to comprehend right now and i need YOUR help PTP!

Also, I'm not an uber-comics head. I go into COTW every now-and-again, but I'd say I've only read like Watchmen, Preacher, Y The Last Man, Walking Dead, American Vampire, that one about dude who gets superhuman power and feels all godly and shit and then goes destructo (how specific right?) Forgive me if I've entered into a sacred realm w/o a pass.

sleeve that comes with the tome (which, by itself, is AWESOME--you can get it for like $19 on Amazon but i paid $35 at some fancy financial district SF bookstore :o/ )

so yeah "blankets" definitely piqued my interest and i will more than likely eventually peep that.

They have a really really great nonfiction section. They are a progressive bookstore and feel no need to "represent" other opinions. So you will never be tricked by a book there. Honestly, that's how I was introduced to Tim Wise. In any other bookstore, a book called "White Like Me" would be written by a white man whining about how hard his life is. But because I saw it in Modern Times, I picked it up. They also consistently stock Paul Farmer's books, when no one else really does.

They have a good selection of fiction but it's not enormous, just good. I see they've started selling used books as well.

only two books that I can think of have ever made me cry. Blankets was one.

It will also, of course, make you laugh, make you think, make you question your own beliefs.

I thought on first reading that perhaps I felt as strongly as I did about it because it takes place during my own formative years - I'm a little older than Thompson, but I was maybe 20 at the time the book takes place where Craig is maybe 18. not a big difference.

But it seems like everyone who's read it (except Janey) feels the same way about the book. It's a masterpiece, and because of that Habibi is on my must-read list, though I might wait for the paperback to save a little money.

Got it on hold at the library at the moment.

But yeah - I love Thompson's work. Blankets is definitely worth reading. Beautiful artwork, and really emotional in a way that few comics are. What I tell everyone about this book is that for the two weeks after reading it all I wanted to do was cuddle with my wife and listen to The Cure, and I don't even really like The Cure.

Another good one is Goodbye, Chunky Rice. Another really beautiful and emotional story, told in a very simple and charming way.

I saw Habibi at the comic book store over the weekend, but I thought if I were going to read dude's work I should probably start with Blankets.

I just couldn't tell with that book. And the thirty dollar price tag had me hesitant.

But I think I'll have to finally break down and get it...

it seems like you've got a good grip on the Vertigo school of comics thought.

Blankets comes more from the slice-of-life side of things though (and I'm itching to know whether Habibi does too). So if you like it, a few creators you may enjoy:

Daniel Clowes -> Ghost world is obviously the most famous, but equally great and funny and accessible, I think, are Ice Haven and Wilson.

Chris Ware -> Jimmy Corrigan... kind of pathetic. I laughed, but felt bad.

Alison Bechdel -> Fun Home... a lesbian coming of age (in a funeral home) story.

David Small -> Stitches... painful to read, but wonderful.

and if you're sleeping on the noir side of things, next time you're out look for books in the Criminal series by Ed Bruabker and Sean Phillips. Maybe not something you would have thought would interest you, but man. Those are great stories.

yea habibi is not at all like those titles i listed above. it is a thought provoking and tear jerking amalgamation of religion, poverty, opulence, slavery, industrialization, friendship, love, science, mysticism, yin yang and straight up beautiful artwork. i heart that book.

>Daniel Clowes -> Ghost world is obviously the most famous,

saw the movie bc i was going through a cristina ricci phase. have seen the books around, may peep.

i picked up a few issues of criminal (and one of the spinoffs i think?) off of a COTW and i dont recall particularly but i THINK i was meh.
