I'm going to see it in two weeks, so I'll report back, but the script is supposed to be great.
I'm torn as to whether it will work as well with a real horse instead of the puppet horses. The puppet horses I think made the play stand out from the pack. You can see footage of that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-bni4QqSv4

but the horse jumps in front of his owner and takes a bullet for him in battle. After the war the boy receives a medal of honor on behalf of the horse.

Good flick. A tad too long. There were whole pieces I felt that could've been cut. Hiddleston said that Stevie took material both from the play and the book for the big screen adaptation. Gorgeous cinematography. Seriously, there were shots where I was sitting there saying they could take a still and put that shit in a museum. But yea at 2 and a half hours shit was a tad too long. And you will not cry at the end.
In other news Hiddleston told me mad shit about the Avengers and a few things about Thor 2. All I'm gonna say is Batman better watch his ass this summer.

Everything between Joey's first battle scene and Alby's re-appearance on screen is expendable to me, sadly. Which is awful, because the German (a man, not a boy) and the French girl in the play are two of the most indelible characters. Here, they've been re-written to deliver on-the-nose speeches about war and bravery.
In fact, the whole script isn't great. The story works... the dialogue, at times, really doesn't for me.
But the visuals are breathtaking, the score should win Best Score at the Oscars, and the acting across the board is strong. Just wish the script were stronger and that Spielberg hadn't Spielbergized the material so much, especially in the middle (the Alby/Joey stuff is nearly 100% identical to the play, with very small changes).
