My boi and I were talking the other day. We started getting real excited because I bought DH: PT 1 on Blu Ray and we both have all the books.

I had to stop and be like, dawg, we're in our 30's, when the FUCK did we become Harry Potter geeks!?

I mean, we were having an extremely detailed conversation about what's going to happen in PT 2.

LOL, I do love these stories tho, and can not WAIT till PT 2 comes out

Proceeded to read all the books in like a month and watch all the movies too. I went from never reading or watching any of it to becoming a Harry Potter geek instantly. I cannot wait to finally get a chance to watch one of these in the theater. Better late than never.

I was underwhelmed. I thought the action could've been alot more exciting for what is basically an action flick. Not saying it's bad cause it very good but I thought it could've been better. Alan Rickman kilt it in this movie. So did Maggie Smith. You can tell these two have been waiting for 8 movies to be let off the chain and they both go in and get a good amount of screen time. The epilogue. Cinematicaly it doesn't work. I along with the audience was laughing. I just didn't buy the effect that mad them look and sound older. And I can't even begin to imagine what the original footage looks like compared to the re-shoots that were used. All in all it's a worthy conclusion for the cinematic series. I personally think it could've been better.

Decent. Helena Bonham Carter was wasted. So was David Thewlis. Actually almost everyone was wasted except for the Radcliffe, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes and some dude that I didn't even remember from the other movies (Neville? Orville? The crowd was cheering for him; I guess he had a bigger role in the books? he's like the surprise hero of this movie and the whole time I was like "who is he s'posed to be?").

I imagine it's way more enjoyable if you've read the books. Several characters die and for all but one I didn't know what the big deal was.

The final battle is alright but it doesn't come anywhere near the battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers.

and the series has kind of been building up him coming into his own ever since the "Dumbledore's Army" days.

He has always been the unsung hero of the series...and having him come into his own in the last movie was very satisfying...and spot on in reference to the book.

that could be the emotions talking, but i thought it was very well done and did the series justice with a beautiful final movie. the only thing i thought they could have done more is show more of the battle. they showed the large scale of the battle, but barely any of the actual fights. i understand because they kept to the main story, but i would have liked to see more magic during the battles in a movie about magic.

i give the movie a solid "A"

First couple are all just set-up. Humans are dicks to Harry. He's friends with Ron and Hermione. Voldemort is a defunct villain but his presence is lurking in the background. Snape is a dick teacher. Dumbledore is a cool principal. Malfoy is a kid who's an asshole to everyone.

There. I think I've summed up the first two films pretty well.

I agree that the first two are formulaic, light, and mostly self-contained.

BUT as far as the big picture, it's much cooler to see how these movies get darker and more mature. They star to get dark by number three. Yeah that's when it really takes off, but it's fun to compare how cute and fun the first two movies are with how dark and gritty the last two are.

Half the films in this series are 3.5 or 4 star flicks. This one's a solid 3.5 too.

It's rushed in spots. The Gringotts scene left me a little cold in particular-- confusing editing. But there are some great sequences. The Snape sequence, especially. The three kids running through the Battle of Hogwarts. A meeting between Harry and some ghosts. The final battle with Voldemort. The final image at Hogwarts.

Ralph Fiennes is SUCH a fucking ham, dude. He overacts like hell, but it's a lot of fun to watch.

How can you day she's the best of the 3, yet criticize Fiennes earlier in your review for overacting? Watson is the worst overactor in the entire cast. I have the same reaction that you did with Fiennes and find myself often laughing, or groaning and eye rolling, at her performances.

I was just making a point that you were critical of fiennes' overacting and yet even with watson's overacting you still think she's the best of the 3? I'll take the other 2 any day. She really overdoes the facial expressions as well as when she's supposed to be sad or angry. In those moments I never find her believable. I still say that they've all had their cringeworthy moments acting wise though.

I really disliked this movie. lack of pacing and tension. brooding, repetitive score that rarely fit the scene unfolding. close-up after close-up of pensive looks passed off as emotion. bizarrely dry readings of the script, with uncomfortable pauses to no effect.

there were bright spots. the cinematography and many action scenes were gorgeous, with seamless integration of CGI. Fiennes and Rickman have fun with it. Helen Bonham Carter has killed it since her first introduction, as has Maggie Smith.

but overall, with so much attention paid to how grim and dire things have gotten in Harry Potter's world, it's as if they forgot to interject any joy or character into the story. why not have the final showdown as it was written, with Potter and Voldemort surrounded by everyone in the school? the sun rising as they duel, and an eruption of cheers after Potter wins...absolutely no need to re-write that.

instead, we got a celebratory-less victory and mundane coffee social after saving the world. no sense of triumph or elation.

scene after scene was misused like that. this movie should have easily been so much better.

This is how I felt about the first two movies. I might wait for the Bluray after reading this review.

reality into the movie. After some of the more beloved bit characters died, it would have been weird to watch them cheer. There was death and destruction everywhere, I like the ending the way it was filmed.

i think people who love the books have let that blind them to the wooden, lifeless acting in the movies...and Ron Weasley's constant cooning and face pulling.

the production design throughout the series is amazing. and the effects have gotten progressively better. but the acting of the core group of kids has been consistently terrible. any time Harry gets sad and/or mad, it's hilarious. it's just so unconvincing.

I was waiting for someone to dead Bellatrix's ass. I was hoping it'd be more spectacular.

But. I think I'm still on a high from the whole movie watching experience. I saw DH2 on IMAX.

The Voldy-Harry showdown really worked for me. That's what I was in my seat for-- to see evil's butt get kicked.

I felt like I got an emotional pay-off with the whole good-vs.-evil narrative. That was satisfying. Right the universe for me, make all well, rally to defeat evil after an epic journey/quest and I'm a happy camper.

I needed to *see* Harry do away with Tom Riddle.

Of course, I can't say anything about HP without wringing my hands @ JK Rowling and the narrative choices she makes in the book/movie versions of the series.

*Wringing of hands begins here*

I pretty much agree with the comments that people have made about what could've been better, or what they could've been done differently. All valid. There's more to be said...I'm sure folks will say the more.

One thing that bothered me, though:

There were some scenes that should've had a bigger emotional impact, but didn't. They fell flat. Maybe because a number of characters weren't used very well to justify whatever feelings the viewing audience was supposed to be having about them.

The Ron-Hermione Harry-Ginny kissing scenes were awful. The timing of them was bad. I thought there was abysmal chemistry between the characters when they kissed. I actually would've been okay if the couples hadn't locked lips. Usually, I think that HP movies are better than HP books. The movies cover up a 1,000 sins that Rowling commits in print. I thought the book did a far better job of expressing the romance stuff.

Mrs. Weasley giving Bellatrix the old not-my-daughter-heave-ho was a let down, too. Odd display of emotion, I thought.

Like a lot of people who saw the movie but didn't read the book, I thought the final showdown felt a little flat. For me, it was because I couldn't really tell how Voldamort was defeated. From what I gather, Harry didn't really do anything in the battle; it was Neville destroying the snake/last horcrux that killed Voldamort; in all likelihood, if that hadn't happened Harry would've caught a proper ass whooping. I thought at first that destroying the horcruxes would just make Voldamort weak enough to kill, but I don't remember any final blow that took him out, he just withered/crumbled.

Can someone explain?

but I thought his death had something to do with the wand he had. They went through the mumble jumble at the end to explain that Draco was the true possessor of the wand because he disarmed Dumbledorf, while Snapes only killed him. Then Harry disarmed Draco in that fight, so Harry was the true controller of the wand. That s why Voldemort killed Snapes because I guess he knew that something would happen to him if he wasn't the true possessor of the wand. I guess we are supposed to assume that Voldemort was that powerful to trick the wand into believing that he was the true possesor, but once the snake died, he was weak and the wand realized who was the true possessor and killed Voldemort??????????

Yeah that's the ticket.

Shit happens

Harry was dealing with a number of issues in facing Voldemort.

The most daunting of them was, of course, the Horcruxes. By having his soul split in so many different pieces, it became almost impossible to kill. So...when Neville killed the final horcrux Voldemort DID know about (after Voldemort killed the Horcrux he didn't know about)...he was fully vulnerable.

The remaining trouble was due to the fact that Voldermort and Harry's wands shared a similar core. So, in disarming Draco (after he had disarmed Dumbledore), Harry was the true owner of the Elderwand (?)...which was in turn one of the Deathly Hallows. So when they dueled the last time...it was pretty much a wrap.

They should have emphasized that disarming someone of their wand is the equivalent of defeat and wand possession.

http://blog.melanism.com/2011/07/17/movie-of-the-week-harry-potter-the-deathly-hallows-part-ii/

It would have been pretty hard for them to screw up the second part of Deathly Hallows. They got all the boring walking, arguing and trying to explain things like Horcruxes and Deathly Hallows out-of-the-way in the first part. All that was left were the action set pieces. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows was the first book I thought J.K. Rowling wrote with an eye on how it would look on the big screen. How else could you explain a series that was pretty low on action for the most part ending with a battle that could only be compared to Helms Deep in The Two Towers?

I thought Yates (directing his fourth Potter) did a great job with most of the action pieces. It was also good to see some of the Hogwarts staff which had been relegated to the background for the last few movies finally have some moments to shine, particularly Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall) and Warwick Davis (Filius Flitwick and Griphook). The all-important Snape backstory was filmed a little over-dramatically but worked mostly because of Alan Rickman’s performance.

A couple of nitpicks and thoughts:

* I don’t like how they messed with the timeline of the end of the book (from Harry’s “death” to Voldemort’s death) so they could stretch it out another 10 minutes. I thought the way events happened in the book (particularly Neville’s heroic moment) played better in the book. I understand they couldn’t let it end so quickly but having Harry and Voldemort chase each other around Hogwarts like Tom and Jerry with wands got silly after a while.

* They didn’t do a good job explaining disarming someone of their wand was the equivalent of defeat and therefore transference of wand possession. If I didn’t already know that from the book, I would have been a little confused.

* I laughed when Kingsley Shacklebolt and Dean Thomas shared a scene and spoke to one another. That was the first time there have been two Black characters on the screen at the same time. Needless to say, the wizarding world isn’t very diverse.

* Another performance I enjoyed was Helena Bonham Carter when she was playing Hermoine pretending to be Bellatrix Lestrange.

* Bloody fetus Voldemort? Ew.

* The movies did a worst job than the books trying to convince us there was anything between Harry and Ginny Weasley.

* Voldemort sure does scream a lot.

* The hug Voldemort gave Draco Malfoy may be in the top five most awkward hugs ever exchanged in a movie.

* I wonder if Harry feels guilty that he got everyone in Gringotts killed inadvertently. Aside from Griphook who double-crossed them (but they were holding him hostage), those goblins were just doing their job. It makes me think of the “Contractors on the Death Star” scene in Clerks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGOVbXF7Iog).

As an avid fan of the books, the ending SUCKED to me.
Where's the McGonagall, Kingsley and Slughorn battling Voldy?
Where's Harry under the cloak protecting everyone?
Where are the screams from Voldy as his horcruxes are killed,
and the way he blasted the professors off their feet when Mrs. Weasly
finally killed Bellatrix?

And speaking of such...WTF was up with THAT lame ass battle?

the "Not my daughter you, BITCH" line should've been a lot more fierce
than what it was..

Then when did niggas start turning into ash with the killing curse?
THEEFUCKYO?

The cinematography was the best thing about the whole movie.
The scenes were shot BEAUTIFULLY. And for once the 3D didn't
over power the scenes themselves but did as it should and enhanced
everything about the movie and engaged you in what was going on.

The end..meh, in the book, the battles were to the death, you could
FEEL Ron's anguish as he learned that Fred was killed, as he tried to
fight past Hermione and Harry to go kill death eaters.

You could FEEL Percy's remorse as he rejoined the family in the
Room of Requirement.(which was fine that they left out, cuz it was
small) just an example of how much a lack of feeling the movie had.

BUT I'm almost positive the movie ended the way it did so that the
folks that only watched the movies and not read the books would
understand that the power of the hallows ended with Harry.

It was just so much random stuff added and taken away, the movie as
a whole was fucking awesome, I am a jaded book reader though, and
I LOVE the detail in the books...

YES. The scene with the Carrow's in Ravenlclaw tower should have been there. Did you notice that after the truly bizarre scene with Snape chastising what looked like maybe a quarter of the school, after he flew out the window, the Carrow's were mysteriously stunned or dead and on the floor?

>Where are the screams from Voldy as his horcruxes are killed,

Actually the movie got this wrong. In the book, Voldemort didn't feel it when the horcruxes were done away with. He screamed bloody murder everytime he discovered them missing or destroyed. This made the end suck even more because it looked like Harry would have gotten owned if it weren't for Neville killing the snake and distracting VOlde.
