"A script I wrote in 1984(!) is likely to get greenlit."
Sun Nov-07-10 02:09 PM by biscuit

Albeit, a low-budget horror film, but hey, I'm not complaining.

In a nutshell, I wrote a half-decent horror flick in the 80's with a couple of friends. Yes, younglings, I was a teenager at the time. We were so confident, we were going to make this thing ourselves, so we wrote it as a shooting script. We even held auditions. Nonetheless, it died a quick death soon after.

Fast forward 26 years later. One of the guys who wrote it is the son of an exec for a small studio, who upon being reminded of the script basically just gave it the go ahead. Just like that, we're on the fast track. As a bonus, the three of us may get Producer credits and will likely get a slice of the backend.

I don't really have a question here since I'm completely dumbfounded by this entire event, but am basically looking for any advice you all have to give, since I haven't been "on the inside" of the industry since, well, the 80's, when I worked as a lackey for multiple production companies.

Side note: The film will remain set in the 80's. Awesome, dude!

Alright then, so dish it up, if you will.

What would you do in this situation?

Then yeah, we'll probably take a crack at "revisions," although we weren't thinking about tasking a re-write ourselves.

Better to take it on ourselves vs. the new guy, who is actually a screenwriter?

None of us have any real cred or skill at it. We've all "moved on."

you hire understands your vision, or what you guys were trying to do, so that your horror film doesn't suddenly morph into something else that you didn't intend

I already shot him some ideas, which I pretty much mandated. I would have done it myself, but don't have time and he does, so be it.

A very good friend with mad skills, so I'm not too concerned .. and he'll be cool about collabo.

I've never been on the inside, but maybe it's time to look up entertainment lawyers, just in case, and especially before your signature is asked on anything?

In any case, congratulations!

Ha. Psych, but really though.

I'm trying not to get too hyped up on this since I know these things can easily fall through, but the prospects are good and it's hard not to stop the wheels from spinning.

You really don't have to do anything other than make sure whatever the production needs is acquired. Sometimes that can be as big as getting locations/vehicles/money... to as small as "The crew wants hot coffee to be there in the morning."
