"Post #50K: The Best Films Of Your Lifetime"
Tue Nov-09-10 06:41 PM by Frank Longo

The task in this post is simple.

Pick what you feel is the best movie of the year... for every year you've been alive.

This might take a little research (for some more than others), but if we get enough responses, maybe we can tally it up, or in the future we can revisit our choice. If you want to edit your list, shoot me an inbox and I can edit it for you.

NOTE: I just completed mine. You're going to REEEEEEEALLY want to put "honorable mentions" or "ties" on your list. DON'T DO IT. Don't include little justification comments or little asides about how "(different movie) almost got this spot." Just put the film's name and director-- let the list stand on its own.

LONGO'S LIST:

1985- Back to the Future (Zemeckis)
1986- Hannah and Her Sisters (Allen)
1987- The Princess Bride (Reiner)
1988- Die Hard (McTiernan)
1989- Do the Right Thing (Lee)
1990- Goodfellas (Scorsese)
1991- Barton Fink (Coens)
1992- Malcolm X (Lee)
1993- Groundhog Day (Ramis)
1994- Hoop Dreams (James)
1995- Toy Story (Lasseter)
1996- Fargo (Coens)
1997- Boogie Nights (Anderson)
1998- The Truman Show (Weir)
1999- Being John Malkovich (Jonze)
2000- Almost Famous (Crowe)
2001- Spirited Away (Miyazaki)
2002- 25th Hour (Lee)
2003- Finding Nemo (Stanton)
2004- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry)
2005- Murderball (Rubin & Shapiro)
2006- Children of Men (Cuaron)
2007- No Country For Old Men (Coens)
2008- WALL-E (Stanton)
2009- Up In The Air (Reitman)
2010 (so far)- Toy Story 3 (Unkrich)

First mention of Platoon!

The might not be be the best movie I've ever seeing seen but seeing that as a 14 year old in the movies was impactful and epic.

great hookah / ____ movie to watch on a weeknight. really though, no other movie jumped out at me from that year: Traffic hasn't aged greatly, Amores Perros is *almost* great, but not something I need to watch over and over, same for Requiem, Gladiator is fun but been done a million times before, didn't love Memento, etc.

I might flip it for Meet The Parents, but subconsciously all the sequels are tarnishing that one.

It looks like Fargo in 1996 and Goodfellas in 1990 are the closest things to consensus, at 9 picks each (so far).

Do the Right Thing in 1989 is right behind at 8 picks. Personally I'm surprised that it didn't do better.

There are so many honorable mentions that I won't even bother trying. There are years where I left bonafide classics off the list for a favorite and vice versa. I could probably name 3-5 films per year that could have a spot.

By all means, feel free to debate on any of these......

except 2003! BAD BOYS 2 IS AN AMERICAN CLASSIC AND SHOULD BE SHOWN TO EVERYONE LOOKING TO UNDERSTAND AMERICAN POP CULTURE ALONG WITH ROCKY, THE SIMPSONS AND THE 1993 SUPER BOWL!

but feel free to debate me.

SN: My favorite film so far this year is Baby Driver. I really havent gone to theater a lot this year. I'm still pissed I missed Dunkirk and I plan to see Blade Runner 2049 because it looks like it may be the type of film I put on lists like these.

And shout out to Baahubali 2. That film is so awesome to behold because it's an epic film without a shred of cynicism or hesitation when presenting its maximalist epic myth on screen. It's the one instance where someone tells you 'the movie is lit' and it actually is. Seriously, that director should be vetted for a Marvel film or a live-action Disney remake. I'd totally watch that guy's version of Aladdin.
