"The OKPTP Podcast"

Listen.
I know you fucks (respectfully) don't respond to my threads, which in internet terms equates disinterest, but I had this flash today.

A podcast.

Here's why I'll admit to sucking.
I'm proposing this and I can't take the reins.
I don't trust my "desperately in need of an upgrade, though lovingly stable" computer to safely record lengthy conversations without crashing, thereby losing the conversation and making me look like the ass I may be perceived to be.

Here's how I see it:
1) We get a few willing board participants.
2) Brainstorm a format that isn't already in use - though I really like the simplicity of the /filmcast: what they've been watching, news and a review.
3) A few Skype connections and a little time and BLAMMO - we're off.

I don't know about the use of the brand, but if anyone wants to get down on something like this separate, HOLLA!

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

I've got Skype, I see most every movie, and I've got all the damn time in the world.

I could maybe even be the ringleader if no one can get the ball rolling til September, cuz that's when my schedule lightens up. But it'd be a shame to miss out on all the summer movies to discuss.

There will be podcast episode threads in PTP, right? If not, a podcast could make this forum deader than how it is when there isn't a popular film out. Don't mind me, I'm just concerned over the state of the forum. LOL.

I kinda thought this would go wood.
It's cool to see we may have something here.
(so no one saw The Maiden Heist, huh?)

I'll do some recording tests to try to figure out the logistics.
I'll also take suggestions on where to host.
I was using mypodcast.com for my podcast, but that site was shaky.
In case it needs to be said, I'm looking for free options with unlimited storage.
Heard anything about PodcastAlley?

In the meantime, what say you regarding format? Got any elements that will set us apart?
Definitely news, new trailers and reviews, but how to differentiate without sounding like we bit someone else's format is the main goal.
Like instead of a featured movie review, we could discuss one main topic.
I have a couple ideas that I haven't heard yet, but I want to think about them a little more.

PM suggestions if you prefer.
We can get down to minutia (like a name) when the time comes, but for now:
1) Free hosting options.
2) Format suggestions.

We might as well do an Emmy nomination show for a first show.

I'm going to try to have the base mechanical elements worked out soon for the test, where we could nail down the final details and I could try recording that.

If you want to be in, your immediate action is to sign up for Skype (if you haven't already) and PM me your user name.
It's free.

If you see me doing something at any point in this process that could be done easier by just ___________, please do not hesitate to share knowledge.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

1. Format. Let's do Emmy noms, Inception, this summer on the whole. Those are three broad enough topics to nail a first episode.

2. The sooner we get this rolling, the better. If you want to be the regular host, the Tony Riali to the panel of lunatics, by all means, lol.

3. I'll inbox you my Skype name.

4. If we need a good name, I have a PTP blog registered that never got off the ground that might work.

It was enough of a pain in the ass without throwing Skype in the mix.

I tried uploading the mp3 at mypodcast.com (free, unlimited storage), but that site doesn't work.
So I set up at podomatic, but that site has limited space, which would prevent archiving in the long run.

As it stands, there are willing participants and plenty of ideas.

The main issues, from where I sit, are:
- recording (kind of a big one). I'm willing to try, but then there's...
- scheduling. The only way to do it is to set a time and whoever is available signs up. We're all in different time zones with different schedules.
- storage. $10 a month at podomatic for decent storage, but looking at that ad up there, I'm not so interested in coming out of pocket, honestly speaking.

This got my juices flowing, so I've resolved to do one podcast a day this week. This is today's result: http://lamonte.podomatic.com

If heads want to say Tuesday 8pm, EST. Test show with Skype, I'm willing to give it a shot.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

As it stands:

Me & Mod Frank Longo

I sent PMs to the three people that actually responded and although some of their schedules conflict, I'm giving them the right of refusal for being decent enough to respond.

My inbox isn't full, so if you really want in, now is the time to step up and send that PM. I'd like to have 4 voices gettin' all "The View" with it.

Naturally when it's done, I'll post it here (if all works out) for your critiques and evaluations...as I know there's no shortage of them here.

That went well, lots of fun, etc. Suggestions:

1. We gotta find a way to keep the categories moving. Obviously, any one of us can talk about a single movie all damn day. We need some sort of time format, haha, that way we can cover more ground. A sort of Around-the-Horn format, if you will. I'll be Woody Paige.

2. We gotta find a new way to listen to you, Monte, when we're actually doing the show, because on occasion it was hard to understand what you were saying with the speaker set-up we currently have. I think that's why a couple of your jokes got crickets-- we couldn't fucking understand it! LOL

3. We could easily do this more than once a week, without question. I know it's a question of our ability to do it... but we talked about one movie and one set of Emmy categories for 60 minutes. We could do a more strict time regiment, do more subjects per episode, and still have plenty for more than one ep per week. Just a thought.

Especially in the TV part, there are some new shows that are coming out, maybe we could each talk about a new tv show that we are watching or plan on watching.

Yeah Monte's audio was choppy as hell, i kept hearing you echo through his speakers, so i was hearing you twice.

Definitely could be more episodes. we didn't even fit in the news of the week or just talk about other movies of the summer.

I just hope I didn't embarrassed myself too much on the podcast. I was just trying to hang with you two who seem to know a lot more than I did about TV. Also, it was my first podcast ever, I'm not that used to talking like that.

There's definitely technical issues to work out.
Sorry that aspect didn't jive, but like I said, I'm going to try working on that for next time.
Fortunately, you guys played it off well.

I'm going through it now killing the silent seconds and it's not something I want to do on a weekly basis. But building rapport over time will take care of that and is something that comes with time.

Speaking of the rapport, how do you guys feel about being the permanent 3 with a revolving 4th?
I see plenty of interested parties above, but in the end, there were 3.

The long form wasn't horrible, but we'll definitely have to incorporate more moving parts/segments in the future.

I'm converting to mp3 now and for time's sake, I'm going to post it over at lamonte.podomatic.com
I'll set up it's own page (on podomatic, at least for now) and move it over the next couple days.
It should be up by 1am EST, 7/21/10.

Plenty to discuss to make this better, but for the first time doing many elements of it, it could be much worse.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Movies

the part where it got interesting:

"To discuss movies as if they were irrelevant to individual experience—just bread-and-circus rabble-rousers—breeds indifference. And that’s only one of the two worst tendencies of contemporary criticism. The other is elitism.

This schism had an ironic origin—the popularization of film criticism as a consumer’s method. A generation of readers and filmgoers were once sparked by the discourse created by Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris during the period that essayist Philip Lopate described as ìthe heroic era of moviegoing.î The desire to be a critic fulfilled the urge to respond to what was exciting in the culture. Movie commentary was a media rarity in those days and relatively principled (even the Times’ Arts & Leisure section used to present a forum for contrary opinions). And then the television series At the Movies happened. Its success, moving from public to commercial broadcast (who can tell the difference anymore?), resulted in an institution. Permit an insider’s story: It is said that At the Movies host Roger Ebert boasted to Kael about his new TV show, repeatedly asking whether she’d seen it. Kael reportedly answered “If I want a layman’s opinion on movies, I don’t have to watch TV.”

Kael’s cutting remark cuts to the root of criticism’s problem today. Ebert’s way of talking about movies as disconnected from social and moral issues, simply as entertainment, seemed to normalize film discourse—you didn’t have to strive toward it, any Average Joe American could do it. But criticism actually dumbed down. Ebert also made his method a road to celebrity—which destroyed any possibility for a heroic era of film criticism.
At the Movies helped criticism become a way to be famous in the age of TV and exploding media, a dilemma that writer George W. S. Trow distilled in his apercu “The Aesthetic of the Hit”: “To the person growing up in the power of demography, it was clear that history had to do not with the powerful actions of certain men but with the processes of choice and preference.” It was Ebert’s career choice and preference to reduce film discussion to the fumbling of thumbs, pointing out gaffes or withholding “spoilers”—as if a viewer needed only to like or dislike a movie, according to an arbitrary set of specious rules, trends and habits. Not thought. Not feeling. Not experience. Not education. Just reviewing movies the way boys argued about a baseball game.
Don’t misconstrue this as an attack on the still-convalescent Ebert. I wish him nothing but health. But I am trying to clarify where film criticism went bad. Despite Ebert’s recent celebration in both Time magazine and The New York Times as “a great critic,” neither encomium could credit him with a single critical idea, notable literary style or cultural contribution. Each paean resorted to personal, logrolling appreciations. A.O. Scott hit bottom when he corroborated Ebert’s advice, “When writing you should avoid cliché, but on television you should embrace it.” That kind of thinking made Scott’s TV appearances a zero.

Unfortunately, it is this very process of affirming the Ebert institution that contributes to confusion about what film criticism has lost. Time marvels that Ebert “typically would give thumbs up to two or three” of the “four or five films up for review on his weekly TV show” without asking if it’s credible or disingenuous. (It will take a separate article to expose the absurdity of a TV show bearing Ebert’s name without his presence, whose interchangeable roster of ineffectual reviewers loyally prevaricate in Ebert’s manner—a “criticism” show owned and sponsored by the Disney conglomerate!)

In the Ebert age of criticism, the Aesthetic of the Hit dominates everything. Behind those panicky articles about critics losing their jobs (what about autoworkers and schoolteachers?), lurks the writers’ own fear of falling victim to the same draconian industry rule: Most publishers and editors are only interested in supporting hits in order to reach Hollywood’s deep-pocket advertisers. This is what makes traditional criticism seem indefinable and obsolete, leaving web criticism as a ready (but dubious) alternative.

The Internetters who stepped in to fill print publications’ void seize a technological opportunity and then confuse it with “democratization”—almost fascistically turning discourse into babble. They don’t necessarily bother to learn or think—that’s the privilege of graffito-critique. Their proud non-professionalism presumes that other moviegoers want to—or need to—match opinions with other amateurs. That’s Kael’s “layman” retort made viral. The journalistic buzzword for this water-cooler discourse is “conversation” (as when The Times saluted Ebert’s return to newspaper writing as “a chance to pick up on an interrupted conversation”). But today’s criticism isn’t real conversation; on the Internet it’s too solipsistic and autodidactic to be called a heart-to-heart. (Viral criticism isn’t real; it’s mostly half-baked, overlong term-paper essays by fans who like to think they think.) "

I hear a few of your jokes while listening now and they flopped with us because we couldn't really understand anything you were saying. It was not because they sucked.

Also, my audio sounds so terrible. I gotta fix that.

Yeah, if we get a more regimented schedule and hit more topics, it'll keep things going at a faster pace. Some of those pauses will go better the more we do this.

Monte, it seemed to go smoother when you'd tell one of us to speak first so that we weren't waiting to see who was gonna lead off. The more you can give us the ball at the beginning of segments for us to run with, the smoother it'll go, I think.

Also, if we get a more detailed list of exactly what we'll be talking about beforehand, that will help us prepare our answers so there's less of those "oh, what am I gonna say" pauses.

I need to work on my "um"s and "uh"s. I also love the added sound effects, the crickets, and shit like this. Those are hilarious.

It was fun to do though, and fairly passable to listen to as a tough self-critic. If we keep that tempo higher and the categories switching quicker, it'll be an even easier listen.
