Not really the A-Team, that was a bad idea from the start (trying to invoke 80's nostalgia with actors that resonate to people 24 and under).

But having a young black teen carry a blockbuster movie like this is a good look all around.

In my defense, the only reason I was mad was Harald Zwart, whose entire career had truly sucked til now. I'm honestly surprised that the movie was so surehanded in its visuals and so pitch-perfect in tone.

But unlike others, I saw it Friday night, enjoyed it immensely, and immediately cysed it WHILE admitting I was wrong. I went from being about 15% mad at most to 100% pleased when I watched that movie. I mean, the shit made me tear up. Cmon.

Also, I wrote a whole review on how wrong I was on http://thepasswordisswordfish.com ...

So don't ever let anyone tell you Longo never took a goddamn L. Not to mention, I jumped off the doubt train early enough and am riding hard enough for this flick in PTP AND GD AND in real life that I've earned my spot on the Karate Kid 'lac. Even if it's not a badwagon, only a 4-seater-- I got on that early.

like, your most enjoyable string of posts in a while, and i don't mean that as a backhanded compliment.

when i first saw the ads, i thought "jackie chan doesn't do karate! shit's racist." but then i saw someone say morita was flip squad and i said, hmm.

i also thought, "a remake? retarded." but then i read your shit and realized i've seen like, what, three truly original movies in my life? what movie isn't the sum of its influences? who cares whether it jacks a title or not? effects the box office and doesn't effect my viewing experience, so go nuts.

and that was just skimming the shit you wrote.

now i actually may go see it.

Shit is embarrassing, and not because I'm homophobic,
but because these niggas just look corny

Thats why I hope they all go to watch this Karate Kid
shit...I watched with a gal, and had to explain that
fighting is a PART OF GROWING UP for boys. That's what boys
*used* to do and you always learned from it, and win/lose
you grow and K.I.M. I don't advocate violence or no shit like
that, but niglets nowadays don't even learn how to stand up for
themselves anymore...I'm telling you this flick is potentially
very powerful for this new generation kids who lack passion
and fire for anything but themselves.

Good to see this film do well, most kids films today are cartoons and the few live-action ones are unwatchable. Kids need role models and rewatchable films.

2)
"My 10 & 13-year-old thought it was one of the best movies they'd ever seen...and at the showing we attended, the entire theater clapped at the end. AS a mom, I loved it as well...great values, great pacing..I wish there were more movies like this."

I believe that Jaden's cornrows represent the growing
tension between the US and China. The chinese bully boy
represents China's resentment of western influence, since
technically, they do not require any imports, given their
natural resources and manufacturing capacity.

Jaden, however, wears the tension with pride, and in fact,
wields it to his benefit in securing the love of the chinese
violin player, who is intrigued by the tension. Their
relationship represents true multi-nationalism, the future of
foreign affairs, where differences and tensions are transfigured
into opportunities for collaboration and mutual respect.

I'm telling you what I just did was no less absurd or
relevant than half of MAINSTREAM Pulp Fiction analyses.

Pulp Fiction is still the biggest farce of our time.

A running joke that Tarantino made on the whole world.

but you can do up a lot of nice spots for pretty damn cheap if you know where to look.

Example: last year, wifey and I hit up London, Paris and Amsterdam-- three pretty expensive cities-- and we were able to find hotels at under $100 a night pretty central in each city. If we had wanted to go the hostel route, we coulda done $30 a night, I'm sure. So it can be done.

I rolled my eyes at the trailer, while the movie concept itself appealed to a weird cross-section of her interests and I got a quiet, but certain, "We're seeing it". I wouldn't really have objected if we still lived in Minneapolis, where it seemed like we saw two or three films a week. But getting out to the movie theater isn't as regular a part of our social lives in Nashville as it was elsewhere so I prefer to choose carefully.

With each successive trailer and review, however, my mind changes and we'll probably go catch it this weekend.

If it's as good as it looks, I may have to forgive her for the time she accidentally grouped "Hotel Rwanda", "Bloody Sunday", and "Au revoir, les enfants" so they arrived the same weekend on Netflix. That wasn't a lot of fun.

(No spoilers)

Just so you know I'm putting actual thought into this.

The original is still a much more serious movie, and is
bolder, and has a much darker overall storyline. No doubt
about that. Lends itself to a movie you can take more
seriously.

This (2010) story is much lighter, in part because the protagonist
is much younger, so it, by nature, has to take on a lighter
tone.

I think the key is: This movie is VERY GOOD and what it
tries to do WORKS VERY WELL. As youngish "beat the odds"
movies go, it is one of the better ones I've seen in a
long time, and is one that kids and adults can enjoy.

I was naturally questioning the idea at first just because of how much I loved the original.....however, once I saw the trailer, I was sold.

I saw a movie that although being structured around the basic story and conflict of the original, actually had had a heart of its own with a cast of actors that could make the movie their own.

Extremely well-done. I cannot give enough props for this one.

...garbage flick, was dragged in there by my wife...great point, its just straight up a goofy flick in a time when creativeness is gone from movie making...just a re-hash of a quality 80's flick. Your right on point regarding the violence, its just laughable that a film could pretend to allow kids to be a part of such violence...garbage movie for a dumbed down society I guess...

i really have no problem with the general idea of remaking things, but you're absolutely right: the way they do it shows they're using remakes as a creative crutch primarily.

instead of considering and reviving the actual aspects of a source material that create the nostalgia in the first place, and/or doing something absolutely unexpected and brand new with it, they basically have a "today" formula that they're looking to make movies with, but movies need stories. they simply would rather not strain to write another hit story/plot, so they take "tried and true" raw story/plot material so they can have something to apply that "updated" formula to.

remakes can be very creative and/or nostalgic. almost every remake i've seen is absolutely neither.

1. The Karate Kid has a GREAT story. It's why the original is a 4-star film. It's not about nostalgia-- it's about it being a legitimately very good movie. And it's not because it has movie stars or big action in it. It's all in the story and the characters. The remake also relies on the story and characters: there are maybe two big fight sequences, and the biggest star is not only in a supporting role, he hasn't had a hit movie in America in forever.

2. They did do something brand new with the remake of Karate Kid. Several things, actually. The setting plays a big part. The training techniques are different. The motivations of the characters are different. While the film keeps several elements of the original film, especially in the structure of the end, the road it travels to get there felt surprisingly fresh-- and there are a million ways in which it could have gone wrong.

Also, the race, while never explicitly talked about, really does play a big part. You get the sense that Dre is more of an outsider than Daniel ever was. In this movie, you feel like Dre is the first black person that most of the characters in the film have ever seen-- people keep asking to touch his hair. Not that this means the bad guys are motivated by racial hatred, but the fact that Dre is so different from everyone else they've ever had to socialize with, especially for the family of the girl, certainly plays a part in Dre's loneliness and his inability to fit in.

So... yeah. I don't think the generalizations regarding remakes fit in here. They took a great story and kept it that way. They gave it some semblance of originality with the changes they made, making it feel familiar and fresh at once. It was earnest, well acted, and well shot-- I can't say that about the overwhelming majority of remakes.

Trying to use the normal logic about remakes doesn't apply here, because this one wasn't lazy in its execution, period.

:
i agree with you about the original Karate Kid being a great story. my gripe about the way they're remaking things wasn't directly pointed at one movie i haven't seen yet. though i do more than half expect it to apply here too. the gripe is that great stories are being brought back so they can *market* on people's nostalgia, yet not deliver on that, and to be used as tried and true raw material to apply a current formula to. that's my problem with "updating" old classics. i don't mind remaking classics (in a creative way), but "updating" means you take the successful story (hard part out of the way now) and put it to cornrows and linkin park music, with extra cgi for good measure. oh and make it more X-TREME. most remakes today appear to have been created in a business meeting.

i'm not saying the original karate kid is only good for nostalgia. i'm saying these remakes in general tend to use nostalgia to sell something, but don't even follow through on that level. and my expectations (not declarations) are that this is more or less in that boat.

ok. i mean, while i do think it's cool that a movie addresses the idea of a black kid in china, it's still pretty weak to me if that's an example of the most imaginative twist they came up with. let's see "Daniel was out of place culturally and class-wise...let's make the new Daniel MORE out of place...make it x-treme: make him black in china."

fair enough, and like i said don't take my skepticism for not being open to it. that would be good news if true. the way it's been promoted screams "lazy rip-off crap" but marketing doesn't always fairly represent the product.

i still feel real fucked up watching 11 year olds beat the living crap out of each other to the cheers and spectacle of adults in the stands.

I mean, the main villain is a bully.

Is it Sin City style fighting, with blood spraying everywhere? No, of course not. If it was that, then I'd agree with you that it's in questionable taste.

But I've seen kids get their ass beat at this age. Bullying is enormously prevalent among middle schoolers, and outsiders get victimized. It's not fun watching Dre get his ass kicked-- it hurts. It's supposed to. It gives him more motivation, and it gives us an idea of how merciless this villainous kid is.

As far as Dre beating up his opponents... it's a kung fu competition. Kids fight in kung fu matches. Does it get a little heavy? Sure, emotions start to play a part when they're fighting, and the punches and kicks sometimes go a bit extra. Again, that's life. And as for the bully who gets his ass kicked at the end, you don't sympathize with him because he's young, because he's shown how willing he is to dish it out, so you expect him to be able to take a punch and a kick here and there.

well, if it was intentionally totally over-the-top like Battle Royale, it would actually be less of an issue to me. at that point it's not trying to pass off as inspirational and good.

You have to be able to give and take hits in the martial arts. And when training in the martial arts, you give and take hits. So my question is, do you object to children learning martial arts if you object to "rooting for" a kid to get hit? When you have a child in a martial arts competition, you're damn right you're rooting for one kid to get hit-- the one that's not yours, so your kid wins! lol

Because that scene was quite enjoyable.

Yeah, the final tournament was a little Blood Sporty, but even if it stretches believability, the viewer benefits from seeing much more skilled martial artists than in the original.

self defense (or defense of others) -- i haven't seen Chan's work on the lil kids to speak directly to that scene, only the general principle.

and i have no problem with the protagonist getting his ass kicked brutally at any age.

my issue is with the tournament and all the various implications one apparently must accept to clap to it. i say "apparently" because my first reply contained the *QUESTION: "so to those who have seen the movie: how is that shit done without being mad uncomfortable to watch?"

...true...the tournament portion of the movie is just laughable, insulting to ones intelligence...I was in martial arts for YEARS, and BELIEVE ME, tournaments are in no way like that, ESPECIALLY the younger ages...the movie is straight cornball dumb, old ideas, and simply played...perfect example of how Hollywood mass produces crap movies...

Jaden definitely did his thing.

Jackie was great.

Taraji was the shit.

That main Asian kid was fuckin' awesome.

Dre's girlfriend in the movie was really good.

The Karate Kid (1984), adjusted for inflation, grossed north of 200 mil and was the 5th biggest film of its year.

Focus instead on how unexpected this hit was, how people slept on it, how critically it's easily one of the best movies of the summer, and how to date it's the second most profitable film behind the new Twilight film.

It still made 8 mil this weekend, so it could still pass 200 mil. When it does, then you can use that argument.

You can also talk about how it's made more money, even adjusted for inflation, than other giant hits like Braveheart, American Pie, Die Hard, Aliens, and (you'll love this) The Departed.

Just a suggestion.

Yeah, you good. I'm not shittin on the original

I already said that I liked it better because its

And the box office gross is not irrelevant here.

I'm not saying anything bad about the original.

Well, that whole argument goes to the shitter in general
because they ain't have DVD and bootlegging and all that
shit in 1984, so it pretty much evens out but of course
you have a good point

I didn't hate it but wouldn't use any synonym for "good" to describe this movie. What's a synonym for "doesn't suck".

I think this movie would seem like a lot less than it is if it weren't for the all of the good will that the original conjures up.

More than anything I kept wondering how were we suppose to believe that this kid got good enough to beat the folks he did . With the original its easy to buy that a kid taught in the "old traditional way" could beat a bunch of punks who trained in a commercial LA dojo started by a white vietnam vet. But couldn't believe for a second that willow smith (sic) could beat everyone in main land china based on his training.

Actually, Johnny and the bunch from the original were
super strong, athletic 16 and 17 y/o almost men. Daniel
was a skinny dweeb. Him learning to beat them was completely
absurd.

Jaden was 11 years old, where the learning curve is greater
(you learn martial arts faster as a kid). Also -- that little
scene where he's explaining to Mr. Han that he's "an athlete"
wasn't random: he's talking shit like a cocky US kid, but Jaden
is a superior natural athlete which is definitely why he gives
the chinese kids so much trouble...he's fast, has natural good
timing, flexibility and timing. It was actually set up nicely,
and made sense to everyone who's not a hater.

So if anything, the original is harder to believe.

watched it on netflix and WOW. Did we watch the same movie? Okay where shall we begin. The first 30 or so minutes were PAINFUL! First off Jaden is not a very good actor. I dont give a shit how old he is. He can pull off the crying scenes well. But other than that he is a 10 year old zoolander, and this is his blue steel http://www.examiner.com/images/blog/replicate/EXID35831/images/ex_jaden_smith.jpg. Then the villains. Now dont get me wrong they were great when speaking chinese, and their kung fu was off the fucking chain. But forcing them to speak english, really didnt help the beginning of the film. Oh yeah Jackie Chan beating up a bunch of kids, WTF!?!?! Seriously I couldnt stop laughing like is this really happening. The training. Take off the jacket, put the jacket on. That was horrible. Yes I know they were trying to pay homage to the original while still being original but if thats all you can come up with then just go with wax on wax off. Jackie Chan was pretty good, it was nice to see him play a role straight with no comedy. The scenery was fantastic. Damn near every shot looked beautiful. Lets go back to the training. No way in hell do I believe a kid from Detroit with some bootleg ass training is beating Chinese kids who came out the womb training kung fu. Sorry. Maybe thats why the first was more believable. Daniel beat up some white kids taught in a white dojo, with the help of a japanese teacher. The tournament was actually decent. But why the shakey camera work on the fights? That really took away a lot. Sorry the film was pretty much a let down. Little Will has a bright future but I dont think he was ready for leading man so fast.

>No way in hell do I believe a kid from Detroit with

>a white dojo, with the help of a japanese teacher.

Daniel was 16 y/o and a skinny dweeb who beat up 16 and 17
y/o almost men physically. Him learning to do that is more
unrealistic than what Jaden did.

Jade was 11 years old, where the learning curve is far greater.
He also is more gifted genetically and athletically than most
kids, which is how he's able to learn faster. This is a truism of
child development -- in sports, some kids catch on faster,
due to natural physical ability. This is how, for example,
Hakeem Olajuwon picks up a basketball at age 17 and is better
than 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999 of guys his
size to ever play the game? Why? Superior athleticism (and hard
work, intelligence,etc).

Like I said -- that scene where Jaden is explaining to
Mr. Han that "I'm an athlete" was actually there for a reason.
He's an American kid boasting, but he was right -- he can
learn faster because he's a natural athlete

Even more -- Jackie Chan HIMSELF said he was astonished
at how fast Jaden picked up the martial arts necessary for
the movie

>The
>tournament was actually decent. But why the shakey camera work
>on the fights? That really took away a lot. Sorry the film was
>pretty much a let down. Little Will has a bright future but I
>dont think he was ready for leading man so fast.

After Jaden Smith gets his leg destroyed in the semi-final round of the tournament, do they ever explain why he gets a free pass into the finals? Just catching this movie on Starz and I must have missed something because it makes no sense to me.

I guess I should've figured they would follow the original script.

Just as an aside, is there a more unlikeable child actor than Jaden Smith? At first I thought he just had a bad part in The Day the Earth Stood Still which made him look like a total brat. But after seeing this movie I just feel like he has no charisma.

I mean, you are hating so bad, you missed one of the
most basic, fundamental parts of the movie

I guess that's what I get for drinking a few beers and watching Starz. I definitely missed an important part of the movie by probably being a little too buzzed but I'm not sure why I should be mad. I still feel like Jaden Smith is an annoying actor and I don't see why I should feel differently.

caught it recently and it made me feel like a kid again. cinematography was excellent, I liked the acting (I wish the supporting Chinese characters didn't speak as much English though) and it faithfully remade the classic story.

if you're 12 or under this is a **** movie. if you hated it, you're probably over 30 and romanticize about the original.
