I thought she was well-regarded, but the only thing I've ever seen in her in (Sunshine Cleaning) didn't really inspire me to have an opinion on her either way. She looked capable in the trailer but I went the safe no-comment route, I guess.

>Craig better. Leo might get him with Inception too.

Daniel Craig's still coasting off of his Casino Royale high? Because he hasn't done much interesting as of late, has he? Certainly not the most recent Bond flick (but I blame the hack Marc Forster for that more than anyone else).

Leo? Agreed. The conversation right now is Damon, Gosling, and DiCaprio. Clooney, maybe.

My Blunt bias knows no bounds. It's a personal preference not many undestand.

Defiance

Him & Paul Hackis was a bad combination but Craig carried it pretty well despite.

I still got Clive on the list. I didn't like Duplicity very much the 1st time I saw it but both the movie & his performance have grown on me since then. I'm saving a spot for Cillian Murphy too.

Fassbender is amazing in Fish Tank. With Hunger, Fassbender (along with Gael Garcia Bernal and Ejiofor) are my favorite actors under 40, off the top. I don't get the love for Fassbender in Inglourious Basterds, he's good in it though. In my mind, he's a cross between Brando and Olivier. Face-wise, he resembles Olivier, a more rugged one. So, if given the opportunity, I think Fassbender could do some Clooney, Firth, and Cary Grant shit on one end and some Brando (Streetcar) and De Niro (Raging Bull) on the other.

I don't admire Leo the way nearly everyone in the world does. He's good, but I'm just too aware of performance with him. His pubescent screams and posture make it harder for me to muster more enthusiasm for his work.

Walked a difficult line between likeable and unseemly, while remaining believable / engrossing throughout. Hunger just wasn't for me, so I turned it off after about twenty minutes and can't really comment on his performance. Still (unfortunately) haven't seen Basterds. The adaptation he's doing of Jane Eyre with Fukunaga is high on my anticipation list.

But sure, I buy his future based on the versatility you described.

There are a couple points / updates I would make to the original Matt Damon post linked to above. In particular, even though I liked Leo's performance in The Departed, I think I was still underselling it. It's a top ten all-time turn for me: intense, on the edge, violent, unpredictable, charismatic, etc. Looking at his IMDB page now, the only other role that approaches that level of quality was his Howard Hughes in The Aviator. He was more than adequate in Shutter Island and Catch Me If You Can, but then kinda off in Body of Lies and Revolutionary Road, for example. So, for me, I guess he's "in the conversation" based on The Departed (and The Aviator), being consistently watchable since the early / mid 90's, and because of who he works with.

Yup. That balancing act reminds me of the difficult task faced by Bridges in The Door in the Floor which I revisited recently and I'm now sure that I rank that ahead of Baker Boys and American Heart as The Dude's best. I think Fassbinder would've been more effective for me in Sarsgaard's place in An Education.

>Hunger just
>wasn't for me, so I turned it off after about twenty minutes

He hadn't appeared yet at that point, right? What's special about the long take dialogue scene is that it's all on Fassbender and Cunningham to modulate their performances. 16-odd minutes of them in unbroken conversation. The director can't shape performance by putting together takes.

>Still
>(unfortunately) haven't seen Basterds.

He has a small part in it.

Yeah, I'm real curious to see how that and Bahrani's Western will turn out.

Top 10 candidate or is it in your top 10? Now you've got me wanting to revisit it. I do think it's his most impressive work.

He is prolific. And that has to count for something. I like Gosling much more though.

Aside from (presumably) Maggie Gyllenhaal, does anyone really prefer Peter Sarsgaard over anyone else? In An Education, the third act turn, where you realize dude is schmuck, while it certainly was signaled earlier on by his lifestyle, wasn't all that "big" to me, because the second I saw / see Sarsgaard on the screen I thought / think "bum ass loser" (c) someone.

All I remember is feces and a strong feeling of claustrophobia. Oddly enough, it did give me great hope for the Fela biopic.

Bahrani's next one is a while away though, right? What did you think of his short with Herzog? I was frankly bored.

DiCaprio in The Departed = all-time top ten performance by an actor. (He and Gosling in Half Nelson represent the decade just passed on that list.)

Oh, no question, I do too. Blue Valentine is probably my most anticipated film of the year. He's my favorite actor.

Yup, I disliked his character from the beginning. One thing that viscerally bugged me was the shot of Mulligan's character giving a huge smile and a laugh just seconds after meeting Sarsgaard's character. It makes sense that we infer that she's smitten right off the bat, but it still bugged me.

Yeah, last I "heard," they'd start shooting in August. As for the short, yeah, I was bored, too. I like the concept, but not the execution.

>DiCaprio in The Departed = all-time top ten performance by an

Watched the film last night. His scene at Farmiga's character's home is really, really, really impressive stuff. Other highpoints are the therapy scenes, the "chop me up..." scene, and 1 or 2 of his phone convos w/ Sheen.

However, I don't find him convincing enough in his first 2 scenes with Sheen and Wahlberg, for example. And it took me a while into the film like most of his line readings. It still stands that it's the Leo performance that I like the most though.

Going off of your past statements, I didn't doubt that you did. I do think he's the best American actor around his age give or take 5 years or so.

Going back to my earlier little list, Gregoire Colin would be on there, too.

Valid argument there. I used to hate on him for different reasons but even when he's not screaming he's impressed me a lot lately. I think I finally became a fan after The Aviator.

For reasons well beyond the physical transformation. That scene in the middle...just, wow. I agree with you on the Basterds hype. After that movie people were talking about him like he'd been a well known entity for years and I didn't get it...until I saw Hunger.

I missed Fish Tank when it came through here, but it'll be at the top of my Netflix queue as soon as it is released.

Yeah, he has a seemingly effortless screen presence. I feel really compelled to see Basterds again, haha.

Can't say I liked the film that much, but felt that my time and money weren't wasted simply because of Fassbender and Wareing (the latter in a small part).

Started out great. Had some interesting comments on politics/elections, life/love, fate/destiny. Thought I'd love it after their initial interaction but it kinda falls flat after that.

Great chemistry between the two leads & Slattery is solid as usual. Was nice to see Mackie play a major role but Stamp is really starting to show his age. It's not bad but I expected a little more depth/reasoning as to why they shouldn't be together. The ending feels like a complete cop out and got a good chuckle from the audience.

But then there's The Blunt. Thank God for The Blunt because she's not only beautiful, but a great actress and elevates the material whenever she's on screen. The Blunt addiction was bad before but now it's critical.

If you found out that God existed, would the first thing you do be to go have premarital sex?

I know that it would have taken the film in a completely different direction but I couldn't shake the fact that Damon learned one of the great mysteries of life and his response was, "Yeah, but about the girl..."

...yeah, nothing like this movie at all.

No politician.
Certainly no love story.
No magic hats or limitations on powers.
No "Chairman."

So basically it's a new story entirely. Which explains why it's so shitty.
