Ranking right now as my fourth favorite Burton film. I could even see it moving up with time and more viewings.

I didn't see it in 3D, and it doesn't look like I missed much (except the TRON trailer, dammit). I really only have two complaints about the film, and that's the character design of the Mad Hatter and Anne Hathaway's hair and makeup. Other than that, I thought the flick was pretty solid. Great performance out of the lead chick. HBC was fantastic, and Crispin Glover did not disappoint. Depp was Depp. I didn't hate him (other than the look of his character), but he didn't do anything that stood out to me.

Definitely recommend it.

The Times is coming with the more sensational "$210 million!!!!!!!!!!!!!" but that's worldwide... of course the higher ticket prices helped but I don't think we can discount the Tim Burton factor, nor, more importantly the Depp factor, either...

The business behind the show

First look: 'Alice in Wonderland' opens to record-setting $210 million
March 7, 2010 | 8:49 am

Disney discovered an opening weekend in "Wonderland" the likes of which have never been seen before, taking in an eye-popping $210.3 million around the world in its debut.

Director Tim Burton's 3-D adaptation of the classic fairy tale, starring Johnny Depp, sold a studio-estimated $116.3 million worth of tickets Friday through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada. Even accounting for ticket price inflation, that's the biggest-ever opening in the first quarter of the year, easily beating the record of $83.8 million set by "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004.

In the 40 foreign territories where it opened simultaneously, "Alice in Wonderland" collected an additional $94 million. That's also a record for the biggest foreign opening in the winter or spring, Disney said. The studio estimated that those countries represent about 60% of the movie's international potential, with major markets such as France and Japan still to come.

Its huge opening more than justifies the approximately $200 million that Disney spent to make the film, including the cost of converting it to 3-D after production. Its performance is sure to accelerate the already rabid interest in Hollywood in making more 3-D movies, as well as for theaters to install more digital 3-D projection systems.

Audiences gave the movie an average grade of A-minus, according to market research firm CinemaScore, meaning that word of mouth should be strong despite mixed reviews. With most U.S. students on spring break over the next several weeks, "Alice in Wonderland" should hold on very well at the box office, at least until the next 3-D movie, DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," opens on March 26.

Overture Films' cop drama "Brooklyn's Finest," the only other movie to debut this Friday, proved solid counterprogramming, taking in $13.5 million.

Not that I watch all his movies, but I at least thought about renting Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride.

Interesting that he decided to take Charlie & The Chocolate Factory closer to the book, yet seems to have completely thrown the book out the window in this case. Not that that matters of course, just saying.

even though Burton denies it.

The narrative depends upon your familiarity with the actual story, because it's a lot of "I remember you/when you were here before/we've missed you, Alice/etc."

It's not one of the movies where you think that anyone who likes it is stupid. Just the kind of flick, as far as visuals and story, that I'm done with for a while. To me, it's one of those flicks that shows the bad legacy LOTR has had, where anything that is fantasy needs to be a fantasy epic, now.

Tim Burton has done much better work but I think it's still a good film. The cast (with one exception I'll get to later) was great, visually stunning, good dialog, and the pace was awesome! I need to see the running time for this film because it moved fast!

Ok, so my biggest complaint is the casting of Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. WTF?!?! She felt so out of place and was so distracting. You're in the wonderful magical world and then there's Anne Hathaway. It just did not fit at all. And I agree with the earlier comment that her makeup was awful.

As much as I adore Johnny Depp, he did not completely steal the show and that was a good thing. Crispin Glover was great and I think I enjoyed his character more.

It was entertaining, which is all I ever ask of a movie experience. Character-wise, maybe they could've gotten an Alice with more life and expression in her face that doesn't say "confused" all the time. JD's character had me confused with all the accent switches. Big head and all, I still have a weird crush on HBC. And man, oh man, Crispin Glover never fails to freak me the fuck out.

and didn't add ANYTHING to the movie. Burton could have done it 2D with CGI and it would have been fine...

totally bizarre.

It got a reaction from me...lemme see if I can emote this for you: a mix of dread and a dash of sheer whimsy with a heaping scoop of dry heaves.

I will always remember that scene.

nah not the worst. Torgo's scenes in "Manos" are the worst.

It was a MESS. On the drive home, my S.O. was telling me it was about Alice's growth as a woman and facing up to decisions and doing what she wanted and not what was expected of her... which made no sense to me because the scroll at the beginning told you the audience and her the character exactly what to expect. IT's the journey! Right.... but the journey was trite and messy.

I never really felt like Alice was ever in any real trouble or had to over come a major obstacle to achieve her destiny.

I also think Burton should have taken this opportunity to really explore Wonderland. I felt liked they relied too much on the first one to explain things. It really just felt like a re-hashing/re-telling of the first one.

For all the shit people were talking about Avatars simplistic story line, this one was far more simple.

Visually good but a mess, a massive jumble of Lewis Carroll ... uh stuff. It's not bad t's just not very good. The CHESHIRE CAT is the best character in the film! OMG. Give me a CG movie about the cat. I'll shell out $30 for that.

Back to the matter at hand...this movie isn't what you think it is. It's not 'Alice in Wonderland' or 'Through the Looking Glass' it's 'Alice in Wonderland 2: Revenge of the Fallen Prince Caspian Goth Stuff 3D Cash-in Saga 4'. The best part of the movie is Johnny Depp's dance at the end because it was totally bizarre and convinces me that Burton is a closeted Micheal Jackson fan THAT REALLY CAN'T DANCE AND DOESN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT GOOD DANCING SHOULD LOOK LIKE ON FILM. Willy Wonka was so MJ the estate should sue.

Now I know why I've cut down on TV and Movies and have turned very Gamerly. I game a WHOLE lot now my PSN trophy count is obscene (700+ that's ALOT for a PS3 owner) and I buy games every week now, it's an addiction. TV and Movies pretty much suck right now 'cept for House, Caprica and a handful of other shows. I don't really have a favorite show, I watch too much MST3k/Rifftrax/Cinematic Titanic and usually watch TV for the news or until the S.O. comes home and watches that E!/Kardasian/Idol mess. Luckily there's Rifftrax. For all the bad movies I get drug to or have to purchase the DVD/BD for ...there are Rifftrax for em ALL!

Thank You Rifftrax

I WANT to hear what they've got to say about the 'Futterwacken'?!?!?

Not good.
That it made over a billion dollars is confusing to me.
