Let's assume your distant uncle was one of those microsoft millionaires, died, and in his trust (cause rich people don't use wills) - he put some money away to perpetually fund a single screen movie house - with you as the owner/caretaker/manager.

What do you show?

thanks

I'd break it down by night.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday would be the best new movie that came out recently. I'd do a midnight show on Saturday of shit like Rocky Horror, The Room, etc.

Thursday would be new foreign films
Wednesday would be the latest arthouse flick.
Tuesday would be kids movies (new and old, shorts, etc.)
Monday would be classics

I'd follow rep house models. I'd also try to screen tv series; quality films that haven't picked up U.S. distribution after, maybe, 3 years after playing the U.S. festival circuit; The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 annually; and screen at least any 5 of my favorite films throughout the year.

Because I'm too scatter brained to commit to any one thing, so I'd just toss in a bunch of stuff that interested me. Note that I'm far from an expert in any of these areas. But this is the kind of thing I'd want to do:

Monday: Reel World Night. Documentaries. Historical, political, nature, slice of life, whatever. Interesting and well made stuff.

Tuesday: Concert (or otherwise music related) Film Night, w/ Live Music Reception afterwards in the lobby (money is no object right?)

Wednesday: Comic book movies, natch

Thursday: Animation Night... Maybe some obscure old shorts to open with followed by a longer feature presentation. Be it Disney, foreign, or just a bunch of Merrie Melodies shown back to back or whatever. But I'd probably stick with the traditional 2D stuff most weeks. Afterwards join us in the lobby where special guest speaker Nukkapedia will be giving a talk on 'Why The Transformers Cartoon Sucked and So Do You'

Friday: Drive-In Night. Old sci fi B-movies and creature features. Some MST3K fare with a bonafide classic tossed in every now and again. Cheeseburgers and milkshakes available in the lobby

Saturday: All You See is Crime in the Cinema Night. Gangster flicks, noir, french new wave whatever. Just so long as it's some crimes going down. Actual muggings and stabbings taking place in lobby all evening long.

Sunday: Romances, because this is turning into wayyyyy too big a sausage fest

Addendum: Inevitably I would lose interest in at least one of those nights, thereby making room on the schedule for a comedy themed evening.

I've never heard Nukks argument on why the Transformer cartoon sucks. Are we talking the series, the animated film or both?

I think you could probably work on combining the comic night and the animated night and maybe alternating and then make room for comedy night. I think your Crime noir night should make room for action/adventure/thriller stuff as well. Because I'm a populist.

I don't want to assign the man agendas, I just figured he deserved a nod as PTP's resident animation scholar. Pretty sure he doesn't write those 80s toy commercial joints any nostalgia passes though.

I don't, lol.

But as far as Transformers goes, I haven't seen the series or movie since they were new, so I can't pass judgement on them. I'd assume though that there's not much a grown person who's never seen them before could get from them.

That is, all art houses have a similar setup: small, intimate theater with standard rows of seats. I think I would experiment with the actual setup. Of course, I'd aim for the highest picture and sound setup available- I don't mean that. I'd try out some shit where I'd have a bunch of couches with small tables in front of them. Sit with your friends, put your feet and drinks on the table. Also, for us lone movie-goers, Lay-Z-Boys scattered about or a small group of rows in the middle. Maybe even a few small balcony sections reserved for private groups. Cocktail waitresses, etc. I dunno, maybe there's a reason theaters haven't tried this.

As for the format, I'd show the same stuff most people here would:
-action movie Fridays
-cult-film Saturdays
-oldies and romances on Sundays
-Mon-Thurs: some mixture of new indies, new foreign, repertory, small film-festivals (fave directors, actors, genres). While talking or even yelling might be OK on weekends, I wouldn't allow any kids (18+) or bullshit (hire a bouncer) for weeknights.

Many times I'd wished I could roll up to a theater at 3 a.m. and watch a movie.

I'm not exactly sure how to accomplish that without attracting homeless people or people in there to have sex (with themselves or possibly another).

i'd start with prices
which are way to high in NYC
and have real matinee prices again

i would have the blockbuster theatres, the indie theatres and the theme night, week, month theatres

yeah it's a 6 screen theatre and the hipsters aren't too far
but the regular families still live in the neighborhood

yeah i ain't read you said single screen but the one right by me has 6 screens

Weekends would be dedicated to newly released independent films, with an emphasis on films by black directors and other minorities.

Weekdays would be themed by decade: 1940s day, 1950s day, 1960s day, etc. And there would be old cartoons and short subjects (and new ones if of good quality) between each show.

Stuff exploding, planes crashing, war scenes, fight scenes, sex scenes. All of this cut from every movie ever made, pieced together and run in a continuous loop. You pay and you get to watch untl the urge to fight, kill or fuck something drives you back out into the streets.
