"Where does Robert Duvall rank in the pantheon of American actors???"

While Bobby D and Al and Denzel all seem to be veering towards bankable roles as they get older, Duvall seems to have gone towards increasingly character driven flicks.....I just saw Assassination Tango yesterday and he was SUPERB in it....any suggestions on other films of his to check out?

The Rain People isn't a bad performance either. But his best are Godfather I & II or Apocalypse Now (Almost all Coppola films).

Who could carry a movie, but not carry a "star" type movie. Could you imagine anybody else pulling off The Apostle?

...that duvall's in more of my favorite flicks than probably any other actor.

apocalypse now is maybe my favorite film of all time, network's in my top 5 or 10. the first 2 GFs, of course. i love m*a*s*h, love the natural. big sling blade fan. thank you for smoking. the apostle is a brilliant labor of love. he even had a bit part in bullitt, another of my absolute favorites.

i had never really noticed or thought abt it before, but duvall ranks pretty high in my book on the "desert island filmography" scale.
