By my completely arbitrary standards, there are only about 3 to 5 'A-list' superheroes to the world at large. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, The Hulk, maaaaybe Wolverine but that's pushing it. These are the characters that everyone not only recognizes, but can tell you a bit about their origin, who their arch enemies are, and what their secret identity is.
B listers would be your Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Aquaman, etc. Anyone could pick them out in a line up, but beyond that they don't necessarily know or care too much. To a comic head, these guys are as A-list as it comes, but try introducing yourself as Hal Jordan sometime to a complete stranger on the street and see if they so much as raise an eyebrow (if they do you've found a friend indeed).
And despite him being a major Marvel character and a founding Avenger, I put Iron Man just a notch below those guys. Or at least I did prior to the box office success. I feel like he was a character that actually had to be *sold* to the public, as opposed to a Batman film, where even Batsuit nipples can't keep the thing from making its money back.
Heads and non heads alike, how far off base am I? I don't really consider anyone here 'the general public' by virtue of the fact that they're on a pop culturally charged message board, but chime in and let me know what you think.
