The first one made money, and it wasn't even all that great.

The Simpsons has to be one of the longest running cartoons ever.

They are still airing new episodes, no?

Not that I'm answering your question at all.

I'm curious though.

yeah it did well and pretty much made its money back opening weekend, but it took years for it to get made (took years to get green lighted and took forever to finalize a script). so its not easy for them to just crank out a bunch of sequels

I couldn't help but feel like the Simpson's movie was too little, too late.

Like...I would have thought it was HILARIOUS...in 1997.

But for me it was one of those cases where plenty of shows took the Simpsons-esque humor to the next level. Specifically South Park and The Family Guy. In the wake of that, The Simpson's movie would have had to really step it up a few notches. I don't think the movie did that at all. But it was entertaining in a nostalgic kind of way.

I dont hate FG, but cmon, it is nowhere near the same league as The Simpsons. I thought the Simpsons movie was fine. I would've like to seen more screen time for the side characters (obviously needed more millhouse!) but it was still an entertaining movie.

But the Family Guy is 100x funnier than The Simpsons ever was.

It's almost unfair to say because without The Simpsons there probably wouldn't be The Family Guy.

But The Family Guy is funnier, it doesn't pull any punches, and it doesn't bother even trying to save face by relying on family values to balance out the dark humor.

The Simpson's was great for the 90s, but it's been outdone.

Not saying The Family Guy is perfect. Sometimes it goes overboard, or one-note, or just outright wrong in a not-funny way. But overall I think it surpassed The Simpsons.

Simpsons might be the best sitcom period, Family Guy doesn't come close. South Park was spot on when the went in on Family Guy.

we're both listening to a lot of beatles right now, specifically abbey road.

i just see all of the cartoons since (south park, family guy, futurama, etc.) as being HEAVILY influenced by the simpsons, to the point that they wouldn't have existed without the simpsons, or at least wouldn't have been able to get away with the stuff they did. even if they had better individual seasons, i don't think their stretches of greatness were as long as the simpsons'.

when me and the fam get together, it's all simpsons references all the time. i've probably seen 75% of family guy episodes and can't think of one quote that would make for a good inside joke. don't get me wrong, it's funny and often hilarious, but really shallow and not memorable. most of it is just "this is worse than the time i..." insert pop culture reference that's only funny because it's obscure, not because it's funny. you know what i mean?

"i smack clowns with nouns, punch herbs with verbs..."

But I will stand by it. The Family Guy makes me laugh way harder, way longer than The Simpsons ever did. Yeah it's formulaic, but the jokes woven into the formula hit much harder. For me at least.

I can quote The Family Guy plenty, but you're right, those quotes haven't been canonized like The Simpsons stuff. I mean, really. Even people that never watched The Simpsons will say things like "Best. ____. Ever."

I love the Simpsons,I watch all the new episodes, watch about 1 rerun every other day and I could not stand the movie.

The pacing seemed lame, the story unfunny, the bits reused, and the payoff small.

But they did manage to get my $10.50 .

They're getting close to ruining the greatest TV show in history. Should've stopped 10 years ago to be honest.

Having said that seasons 1-10ish will forever remain as some of the greatest TV ever made.

but the whole image of the show is getting tainted for me. Everytime I switch in to one of the newer episodes it makes me sad. Sure the odd good episode, and nearly always at least one good laugh, but they've totally lost their direction. I just want a line drawn under the show and to not have to remember it as a show that tailed off that hard.

It's the GOAT regardless of how long they keep sputtering along. I'll go home tonight, watch Homer Loves Flanders for the 600th time and laugh my ass off. The new shit...I'm good. But it doesnt make the classic era any less awesome.
