"Has there ever been a comedy/comedian worthty of an Oscar?"
Tue Sep-08-09 12:45 PM by vee-lover

I always noticed that comedies/comedians get snubbed by the Academy. I once heard Chris Rock say that he thought Eddie Murphy should have gotten an Academy award for his performance in "Nutty Professor." I never thought about it in that regard but looking back on him portraying several different characters was pretty impressive...although I thought his performance in "Coming to America" was better overall.

I can't think of a comedy film that was deserving of an Oscar, maybe one of Woody Allen film's perhaps.

Thoughts....

2. Films like Working Girl and Jerry Maguire were nominated for Best Picture as well, and those are considered comedies.

3. Downey got nominated for Tropic Thunder last year.

4. Those facts aside, there have been many, many, many snubs for comedic performances, and/or movies. I'll start with two: Eddie's performance in Coming to America; There's Something About Mary should have been nominated for Best Picture in 1998.

"Coming to America" was a great flick and it has still manage to stand up against the test of time. It was so far ahead of other comedies that were out during that time. So you think "There's Something About Mary" should have been nominated for best picture?

besides comedy not being taken seriously, humor is more subjective in some ways than straight drama: what different people find funny differs greatly than what they might find dranatically impactful.

But you know I've heard actors say that doing comedy is, a lot times, more difficult to do than dramatic roles just because you have to be able to deliver the funny lines on cue no matter how often you shoot the scene.

Critics thought it had too much "toilet humor", so that may've had a negative impact on it being nominated.

which is why "real" dramas do so well.

but in the "comedy" world of film, too many movies get caught up on the extreme end of comedy.

Peter Sellers in Being There was hilarious but it wasn't a comedy. it was just funny.

so, i dont know if any straight comedy film was worthy of an acting nom.

Not to say that it would have won over Ben Hur, but since Wilder got the nom for directing and Jack Lemmon got the nom for acting, you would think it would have gotten the nom for Best Picture.

1959 was a strong year in general but I'd still put Some Like It Hot up there in the top 5 of films released that year. And it's by far my favorite comedy from that era.

I never really thought of this as a comedy though. I mean Eddie provided the comic relief in the movie but overall I thought it was just as much action as it was comedy.

Won for best script, which was ironic because they didn't stick to the script at all and the screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr. was really mad at Altman for that. Yet he went and accepted the award anyway without giving any credit to Altman. (Credit where credit's due he was blacklisted, and I think his acceptance speech was about the blacklist).

funniest movies, ever...I still can't believe that a movie so edgy was made in that time. With so much PC today, I doubt if we'll see another comedy in the vein of "Blazing Saddles."

Do you by chance know what category it got nominated in?

There aren't enough yearly Oscar-caliber comedies to merit its own category. To create a new section for them would merely dilute the name of the Oscar even further.

for Bad Santa. You can't deny he kills in that movie - it's one of my favourite comedy performances.

That being said, straight comedies rarely get respect at the Oscars, so it's not surprising.

He can act for real. Even in his comedy joints, like "Liar, Liar", he acts his ass off. That shit isn't easy to do, it takes a lot of skill. I've always felt that great physical comedy actors get snubbed.

...have we accepted yet that comedies (while often overlooked) do get their share of Oscar love?

I'm more disappointed in the Academy for not giving Pixar the Best Picture noms it deserved the past two years. Though, I'm bettering with ten nominees this year, that UP will finally get that love.

those movies tried to be heartwarming and everything. what about just movies that everyone thinks are funny. what's wrong with rewarding a performance in that if everyone acknowledges that performance is great. i'm not talking about a silly movie that's designed for critics and awards shows to hate it (adam sandler movies), but some of the movies listed aren't just known as some of the greatest comedies, but some of the greatest movies of all-time, yet they didn't get much award love the year they came out (and in many cases, they lost to movies that haven't maintained a legacy).

Renee Zelllweger got one for BRDGET JONES. And as someone stated above RDJ for TROPIC THUNDER. I mean, it happens is what I'm saying. I mean, Tom Hanks saw a nod for BIG. Shit happens.

and not necessarily for the ones that deserve it either. I mean Bridget Jones and Pirates??? cmon.

edit: and even when they're nominated, do they really stand a chance of winning??? the nomination is more obligatory than serious consideration imo. i mean you tell me peter sellers in strangelove didn't deserve the oscar. he got nominated but didn't get it.
