Nothing, and I mean nothing, was gullier than the scene with Red Crow on the phone. I won't divulge the details, 'cause the O.G. poster hasn't read it yet, but that was grimy supreme.

Dont tell me.......!!!
Im not reading the individual issues so I havent gotten to that.

but if its any grimier than previous shit.........I dont know what to say other than this might go down in history as a classic.

I mean right up there with ANYTHING thats eeeeeeeeever been written.

Its a shame that whole talk show episodes aren't dedicated to talking about the social implications of SCALPED.

this needs to be a national discussion !!!

the next one comes out in OCt, and believe you me,....I will be like a crackhead waiting for that shit...!!!!!

I almost think they should make a movie,...but somehow I think either

A) its too grimey for hollywood,.....

B) they will fuck it up beyond repair.......

C) they'll get tommy lee Jones or Benecio Del Toro to play Bad Horse.

a corrupt FBI agent? actually a few corrupt FBI agents? a reservation casino kingpin? meth addicted drug trading killers littering the res? Hmong gangstas who get off on torture? a white boy desperate to be injun? a pretty obvious Leonard Peltier reimagining? I mean, scalping, and a hero who gets addicted to smack while banging out the town ho?

Hell and nah does this ever get made into a movie, and if it did, it would be a farce.

100 Bullets worked very well as almost-independent arcs, or loosely connected stories... but the attempt to tie those arcs into a larager narrative never really panned out like I expected it to.

if Jason Aaron is Native American or at least part....
cause either that or this dude really did his research on th culture as a whole, it seems. I mean there is just certain things in that book about the Native American culure and life on the reservation that i dont think everyone is just privy too......

buuuut,....
it leaves the question, "does that kinda shit really happen on a Indian reservation?"
I mean, yeah its grimey and not flattering in any sense of the word to look into the Res, like Aaron does, but is it real?

It sort of reminds me of a movie called Fort Apache Bronx, with Paul Newman....he played a police officer in the "Fort Apache" area in the Bronx in the 70s.

When that movie came out,...alot of people protested it, called it racist, said it was a unfair portrayal, etc etc......

but the reality of it is is that the Fort Apache area in the 70s Bronx was a fucken war zone. The hood of all hood. Nothing about that movie was unrealistic. Yet, it wasn't flattering and it didn't portray the good things about the Bronx.......

I suspect that SCALPED is that same sort of thing.....
GRIMEY,....REAL,........TO THE HEART....yet unflattering and not upliftingly positive.

undoubtedly the story contains elements of real life on a reservation, but it's not a true story and shouldn't necessarily reflect 'reality' aeven if it is 'realistic.'

by Ian Frazier. If you're interested in an account of reservation life, I'd recommend it.

Addiction problems and poverty problems are pretty real from what I've encountered, but the element of criminality seems pretty overblown for the story's sake. I've lived near reservations with casinos, too, and I definitely didn't get the sense that there was an organized gang about to be infiltrated by the FBI, just lots of poverty and cultural alienation, slightly paid back by slots.

check it out.
I mean,...at the end of the day, Jason Aaron is writing a fictional story,...
however, there's no telling of how much of it is based on actual reality unless we see it from the eyes of one living as an Indian on an Indian Reservation.
But like they say,....there are 8 million stories in the city,...this is just one.

Thats why I think I like this story so much, cause it gives the reader a picture of something that they normally might never encounter or even hear about.

What makes it even more grimey is that all of the characters in the book have this sense of "accepted normalcy" in the most dire of situations where only the the powerful and corrupt can ever rise.
But even the powerful and corrupt are so linked to the inherent problems that there is no real solution to fix it.
The history is too deep,...the scars are too deep,...the damage....has already been done and now the problems are entrenched.

So even if Dashiel BadHorse does take down the criminal,.....
Nothing will ever really change.
Life on the Rez, will continue in its worse way....

I would love to see sort of a Rashomon type story told from the Indian Rez where you see the story told from the perspective of all the characters involved.

If you see yourself in others, then who can you possibly harm

***SPOILERS***

Bad Horse's moms gets got. The crazy seer dude (why can't I remember his name right now?) goes stumbling through the Res on those visions and all, and he sees everyone as their spirit animal before scalping mama Bad Horse. That was easily, and I mean easily, one of the greatest comics I've ever read.

I gave his Wolverine stuff a shot, and I gave his Ghost Rider a shot, but neither did much for me.

Similar thing might be happening with Jonathan Hickman. I loved his original stuff for image, but Secret Warriors didn't start off that strong for me - some great stuff in it, but it just didn't grab me that hard. That said I'll probably give his Fantastic Four a shot this week too.

a looooooong time ago.

then my friends tried to hip me to Civil War (which I absolutely loved until the end which ruined the entire story)

and then Secret Invasion,.....(which i thought had a good premise,....but also ended in utter bullshit.)

For now,....my top 3 books are

SCALPED
100 Bullets,....
and DMZ, which I happened of kind of like.

but SCALPED is by faaaaaaaaar some of the best writing Ive ever come across and trumps everything else ou there.

You can dive right into Blackest Night w/o too much backstory, but a logical place to start is with the Sinestro Corps War, which I tink is collected in one trade.

You could probably just jump straight from that into the Blackest Night shebang going on now.

something like Ultimate Weapons, where they review the five master villains in the world. So far they've only released the first, but the first one was fucking awesome, and I've never touched an Iron Fist comic before, so they're pretty effective as stand-alones, too.

Kung fu badassedness. the tournament dragged a little, but some great characters were introduced and the IF back history was fantastic. There were a bunch of related one-shots that were all great, too.

A lot of folks jumped off when Swirczynik or whatever his name is came on, but his stuff was really good too.

And yes, the Fat Cobra issue by Aaron was pretty good.

when he was with DC, both his Catwoman (esp. the two trades drawn by Darwyn Cooke) are phenomenal.

He co-wrote some of Gotham Central with Rucka, and while I've onl read the first trade, it's highly thought of.

Sleeper was published by Wildstorm. Very superhero noir. Phenomenal. Drawn by Phillips, the guy who's draw Sleeper and Incognito for him.

After the switch to Marvel, he's done 50 issues of Captain America, turning it into very much of a darkly toned, international espionage vibe.

His Daredevil run has just wrapped and he really built on the noirish sense that Bendis brought to it.

Criminal & Incognito... great stuff.

the most interesting things about SCALPED is just the pure desperation and accepted amount of corruption that goes on in everyday life. It makes me wanna do the knowledge and find out all that I can about life on the RES.

Nobody is winning on that REservation other than than the powerful and corrupt....
I mean its way beyond hood in a sense that you almost have to either join the circle of corruption or just leave in order to really make it. There doesnt seem to be a real middle ground. But leaving is almost an impossibility,....so therefore most end up in the cycle.

crazy shit man,.....
Just on an average given day,....how many people do you hear talk about whats truly going on on an Idian Reservation???
And here we have this story being told through comic book format that speaks to a larger degree that no movie studio, news station or cable network would ever touch!

My hats off to Jason Aaron.

Ive never been on one, but I definitely want to though....
I feel its something that I should see at least once in my life.

And maybe thats why SCALPED appealed to me so much, because I always sort of suspected the worse conditions going on in a Indian Reservation.

And Im sure there are some good things there too, like any hood, but I just tend to think Indians may have gotten the absolute worse of what America had to offer.

need to pick up dead mothers and gravel in your gut. the comic book store moved a couple of shops down so i was waiting till they got situated.

i need to take a picture of their new mural on the side of their new spot. my neighbor keeps complaining to me that it really better not be finished because the silver surfer isn't on there.

i was thinking about picking up ghost world because i liked the movie and didn't know it was a comic until a few years after. i would like to read comics in that vein.
