"Poll question: A year later: The best superhero film of Summer 2008"

Yep, it's that time again. I've seen three of these four again since last summer, and my vote is ready to be cast.

Note: Let's attempt to keep the discussions to point-counterpoint format, while keeping our voices down and all name-calling to a minimum. I'm more than willing to go over the multiple objective logistical draws and flaws of each film, and I hope others will do the same.

Poll result (90 votes)
The Dark Knight (54 votes)Vote
Hellboy: The Golden Army (3 votes)Vote
The Incredible Hulk (1 votes)Vote
Iron Man (32 votes)Vote

the art design was great but the acting and plot were completely juvenile. not that I'm forgetting it's a comic book movie -- it just didn't have any compelling drama to it. more like a series of loosely connected vignettes that weren't very compelling on their own.

Iron Man had an excellent lead performance, excellent action, humor, and solid supporting performances, but the villain(s) were weak. We got relatively anonymous Arab terrorists and JEff Bridges with a shaved head. And they didn't do much to make me care about Stane. Furthermore, I've always hated the Tony Stark "fake heart" aspect of the character, and that goes for the film as well. Like, realy, the guy's a billionaire and he can't afford open heart surgery?

Batman had a damn good lead performance, the best action of any of the films, a solid to excellent supporting cast (minus the usually excellent Gyllenhall), humor, and the best villain out of all the films. The drawbacks: the bat-voice is still fucking ridiculous. I never got the hub-bub about the majority of the supposed plot-holes, I've now watched it many, many times and it holds together to me.

Again, not taking anything away from Iron Man, but it's still Dark Knight. It's one of those movies that made a shitload of money and deserved it.

As for theother two, Hulk was just fine, and I haven't seen Hellboy 2.

I vote Red.

Agree with all of the DK comments except the Batman voice. Everybody hates it but it doesn't bother me, I get it.

Really liked Iron Man, too. Haven't seen Hellboy or Incredible Hulk yet. I'm hoping to see Hulk soon since I heard it references Iron Man and future Avengers jawns a bit.

Despite it's flaws, I liked the first half of Dark Knight the most. If they had made one Joker focused film and ended on a cliffhanger of Batman busting in to save Dent or Rachel, it would have been better (although still flawed)

Iron Man was #2 but the main villain/final battle did nothing for me.

Hell Boy was alright. The key climatic moment of the film was weak and should have taken place at the end of act one.

I rented Incredible Hulk and turned it off midway through.

But, as it is, I'd probably still go Dark Knight #1 with Iron Man close behind.

I'd have to see the former again. I definitely thought TDK was the best when I first saw it, but damn if that shit hasn't aged 30 years since then. past two viewings have been awful affairs -- the suspense of Ledger's performance evaporates while the length and painful script mount into a 2.5 hour headache.

DK.

Was there anyone in Iron Man other than Downey and Paltrow? Seriously. I'm asking. I remember some great performances from Stark's robots, but they don't count.

Story-wise...come on. It was fun, but where was the freakin' suspense?

fka nope

1 Iron Man

2 Hell Boy

3 Hulk

4 TDK

TDK was the longest, most over hyped, clunky narrative piece of shit I have seen since Alexander. Seriously it was so damn preachy I felt like I was in CHURCH. The ending was the dumbest shit ever and I could have done without the whole explanation by the commissioner to his son how he "had to be hunted" and he was the "hero Gotham needs but isn't ready" for right now. I felt like the whole Two Face character was rushed and just thrown in and somewhat wasted. The Batman voice is probably the dumbest and most unnecessary thing added to any of the Batman movies since Batman and Robin. The whole Joker escape from prison scene was way over the top, especially for a movie that was supposed to be "real".

Ang Lee's Hulk>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Louis Leterrier's

That being said, I really hope LL doesn't drop the ball with the Clash of the Titans remake. The few pics that have been posted so far look pretty good with Sam Worthington taking over the Harry Hamlin role.

Hellboy 2 had its moments but wtf happened to Selma Blair? I thought at one point she used to be sort of attractive & some what of a decent actress. After trying to sit through a 2nd viewing she was terrible. The action was good tho.

Iron Man has a great performance from RDJ & some solid action scenes but too few & far between. And I couldn't tell if Jeff Bridges was playing the villain or The Dude again.

The Dark Knight was not w/o its faults either but overall I got more bang for my buck w/ that flick than any of the others. And no its not just 'cause it was loooooooong as fuck (which it was). Heath brought that heat. Wally Pfister's cinematography continues to impress me on multiple viewings. Richie Coster bit part as The Chechen gets better & better. And the action, sound, & overall acting here easily takes the cake.

Sam's lookin fierce as fuck in them pics son. I dont want to get my hopes up too high due to the director at the helm but with Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Liam Nesson as Zues, & Danny Huston as Posiedon, plus Mads Mikkelsen, Pete Postlethwaite, & Jason Flemyng involved as well, man I really hope this is the type of greek mythology movie that Troy should've & could've been.

>and yeah I agree with TDK >>> Iron Man >>> Hellboy 2 >>> Hulk

I think the first two are in a class of their own. I'll watch parts of the other two whenever they're on but they're not holding my interest from start to finish.

TDK is still getting that backlash...believe me it's not a perfect film and maybe the ending is rushed but the anti-climatic ending of Iron Man makes the third acts of both films awash then.

Dark Knight has the far better villain and score. Also Dark Knight's supporting and bit actors were better too. Also what's the defining moment in Ironman? Joker's pencil scene, the opening bank robbery, Joker's head out of the police car, the batpod flipping off of the building, the batmobile turning into the batpod, Tiny Zues Lister throwing out the detonator, The stack of cash burning behind the Joker etc etc.

I mean Downey as Starks is spot-on and he's hilarious but that film has less iconic moments/sequences IMO. It's still a very good film and I'm very excited where they go with part 2.

But whatever to each is own.

TDK, I was happy to wait until dvd.

Both were miles ahead of the rest, though.

No name calling from me.

'Iron Man' is eons more clever and fun. Far better

TDK's shock value doesn't stand up to the test of time.
Now that everyone is over the Ledger death, TDK is
being judged for what it is. Good movie, not anywhere
close to 'Iron Man'.

...Iron man's only flaw was the villan...no one gave a fuck about Stane and it came off like the first Hulk when he fights his dad in the end, everybody just goes "eh..ok"...it's a movie anyone can watch and enjoy...

....TDK was almost too dark for it's own good and the action did NOTHING for me....this, like the 1989 movie, will get love forever because of the Joker and the way thatactor prtray him...othwise, whaat's there to really give a damn about???

...Hulk was cool but i honestly can't remember what it was about or what happened...oh, there was the Abomination right??...i agree that Ang should have been brought back...

Hellboy...well i still haven't seen it...used my free rental to watch Gran Torino...which was AWESOME....

ironman's only PRO is RDJ. he carried that movie. without his performance that movie would of been cheesey and dull.

jeff bridges was lame as the main villain

terrence howard's performance was weak

paltrow was ehh...

there wasn't any memorable iconic scenes

the action was supar, in fact there's only 3 main action scenes and none of them reached its full potential

it was a DOPE origin story, but nothing more but a popcorn fun with a wack ending aside from the after credits scene.

to me, incredible hulk >>>> ironman.

whereas TDK. any complaint is nitpicking such as batman's growl. but the story was VERY adult, mature with alot of political, social, and moral messages to point and speak about.

take away the obvious oscar, and yes OSCAR WINNING performance of ledger (that alone along with its other 7 oscar nominations which proves which is the more superior film), and you STILL have mesmerizing performances by freeman, oldman, and eckhart.

the SCORE, the groundbreaking CIMENATOGRAPHY, the littlest use of CGI, the story arc of the rise and fall of harvey dent perpetrated by the rise and chaos of Gotham created by the joker....

hell, there's WAY too many iconic SCENES to speak on such as the opening bank robbery sequence, the pencil trick, batman gliding thru HONG KONG, the batpod playing chicken with the mac-truck, the ENTIRE interoggation scene, the joker sticking his head out the window of the police car, the joker walking out of the exploding hospital, the 9/11 inspired scene of batman kneeling at ground zero of the exploded building where rachel was with firemen in the background, fucckin' scene stealing DEEBO tossing out the remote at the ferry, and the epic monologue by gordan in the final scene.....

TDK had so much MORE....it wasn't a mere comic book film. it was a CRIME EPIC

ironman was dope for whut it is, but you cannot compare. TDK was way superior.

Iron Man was great, but TDK was a better adaptation and was a lot more entertaining. I'd rather watch TDK again than Iron Man. TDK had a better story and better acting, was a lot more suspenseful and a lot more fun. Easily the GOAT superhero movie.

In response to Reply # 0

can only deal with the first three

Hulk was enjoyable and entertaining but was a reboot so there wasn't much ground to break.

Ironman was a FUN, smart, movie and well placed in a contemporary setting. However, the way that Stane left Starks "to die" in his house was just a bit ghey. The Joker not killing Batman makes actual sense, he needed someone on his level to make crime interesting. Stane had an agenda for power, he should have simply killed Tony, point blank.

However, the only true issue I had with the movie was how he reveals himself as Iron-Man at the end. I'm not at all sure or confident with how they're going to play it off in the second movie, it better not be some bullshit ass dream sequence.

Dark Knight was like a theater production, with much meatier and heavier things to digest. was it perfect? no, mainly because two face was potentially wasted/rushed. But I think the length of time was necessary to deal with all that it set out to do.

Comparing a sequel to a first picture isn't a fair fight anyway. People are going to inevitably poke holes in the ways they don't feel it measures up to the first one, but I just saw the joint on Sunday and it was aged just fine to me. Meanwhile, aside from the two times i saw Iron-Man in the theater, I haven't itched to see it again.

I definitely don't think it was as good as when I first saw it. Cluttered, long, unexplainable things occuring(yeah i know it's a comic niggas).

I saw Hulk again the other day. It wasn't good. Can't believe I walked out the movie and actually believed it was a good movie. It really was only better than the 1st because the 1st was terrible.

I gotta check Hellboy and Ironman out again to make a clear cut decision.

Yep. Its a huge fucking mess.

And yeah - cats kill me with the "lighten up, its a comic."

Uh.

Unless shitty, garbled storytelling is ignored in the comic
world, I'm gonna talk about it.
