"When did Roger Ebert start getting taken seriously?"
Thu Jul-23-09 02:35 AM by Vaiops2wega

When he was reviewing films with Siskel this guy was considered a joke. It was Siskel who always promoted high art. Ebert always had this disgustingly populist approach to film criticism. He was the one who was always defending formulaic summer blockbusters. Now his word is almost gospel to a lot of people. This is a guy who said Crash is the best movie of 2005 and who recently gave Knowing a four star review.

>When he was reviewing films with Siskel this guy was
>considered a joke.

O RLY?

>It was Siskel who always promoted high art.

Yes, Gene Siskel (RIP), the same guy who loved Saturday Night Fever so much he jumped at the chance to cop the white suit that John Travolta wore in it, "always promoted high art."

>Ebert always had this disgustingly populist approach to film
>criticism.

ZOMG you mean he actually wanted to help people decide which movies to spend their hard-earned money? What an ASS.

>He was the one who was always defending formulaic summer blockbusters.

Here's his "defense" of Armageddon:

"The movie is an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain, common sense, and the human desire to be entertained. No matter what they're charging to get in, it's worth more to get out."

BTW, Gene Siskel gave Armageddon a "weird, very weird Thumbs Up:"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6WjXAZJ9P0

Here's another "defense" of a summer formulaic blockbuster, this time the 1998 version of Godzilla (a film in which a pressed Emmerich and Devlin clearly had Roger on their minds, since they named the Mayor of New York after him):

"Godzilla is a big, ugly, ungainly device to give teenagers the impression they are seeing a movie.... One must carefully repress intelligent thought while watching (this) film... You have to absorb such a film, not consider it. But my brain rebelled, and insisted on applying logic where it was not welcome."

>Now his word is almost gospel to a lot of people.

That's because he knows more about movies than... nevermind...

>This is a guy who said Crash is the best movie of 2005
>and who recently gave Knowing a four star review.

"The GOAT liked two movies I didn't like so I decided to get mad and make a post about it full of generalizations and inaccuracies..."

GOAT!?! Get the fuck out of here. You do know that GOAT means Greatest Of All Time, right? He's not even the best film critic of his time. Peter Travers is better than Ebert.

>>Ebert always had this disgustingly populist approach to film
>>criticism.
>
>ZOMG you mean he actually wanted to help people decide which
>movies to spend their hard-earned money? What an ASS.

Yeah, he is an ass for lowering his standards while reviewing a movie like Hellboy to match those of the people he thinks the film will appeal to. It's also condescending and anti-intellectual

It's not just one movie, he admittedly does this with all films. Hellboy is incredibly stupid. If you honestly like that movie it's time to throw away your action figures and grow up.

People lost respect for him when he bent to pressure from the higher ups and started giving more positive reviews so that studios would keep advertising in Rolling Stone. (or so the story goes).

Ahh, symantics: the last resort of someone who can't defend their argument. Only a moron would take that statement in the most absolute literal sense, so stop playing dumb, unless you actually believe that I was implying that Siskel was a flawless human.

"Ebert was the less respected of the two."

That was a false statement. Sorry, it was. For evidence, see: history of film criticism.

Then, you gave a sweeping compliment to Siskel, and condemned Ebert by using two examples.

Zoo gave Siskel a couple of specific examples of how your compliment was wrong, which is the exact same strategy you used to condemn Ebert. But you're saying that Zoo's wrong to do that?

Whether it's a big summer blockbuster, a kiddie flick, an action extravaganza, a cheesy romcom, Ebert ALWAYS gives it a fair shake. Because-- and here's the real shocker here, so get ready-- he WANTS MOVIES TO BE GOOD. Unlike some critics, who treat every film as if it should be hung in a museum, he loves movies for what they are.

He has his weaknesses (he tends to love movies about race, and he tends to love movies by his favorite directors from years past) and he has certain types of films that he almost always hates (stupid comedy a la Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, torture porn horror flicks). Yet he goes in with an open mind, tries everything on without pre-judgment, and writes in a style that isn't intended for some scholarly journal, but is instead written for the average intelligent American moviegoer.

And while I disagree strongly with him about Crash, I gave Knowing 3 stars, because I thought it was quite good and ambitious, if flawed, and had some of the most memorable sequences (including its unbelievable ending) of any film this year.

I've read every 4 star review he's ever written (from his terrific collection of them, available on Amazon), and have even dedicated a section of my blog to trying to see all of them. It's slow-going, but if you want, you can see the beginning of that project here: http://thepasswordisswordfish.wordpress.com/category/watching-ebert/

So yeah. That's why he's the greatest.

She was the first in the game to really bring the smack down, and she was more open-minded to out-there artsy films, especially as violence started seeping its way into films and she was the main one (with Ebert) saying that if it's used for a reason, it's powerful.

However, she failed to give many films a chance, especially as she started engaging in politics against the NY Times, preferring to cling tightly to a contrarian point of view, in my opinion. There are some great books about the New York critics during awards season, and how she fought like hellfire against everyone, no matter what the consequences.

That's what made her the originator, really. She was a brilliant writer, witty, emotional. She wasn't afraid to roast the most popular films in the nation-- pretty much every critic working today loves her. I think she's outstanding. But Ebert is more open-minded, and equally as witty and emotional, without being as verbose or immediately judgmental (most of the time).

Jokes aside, I feel your point. But I just find Kael to be a better writer. Some of her reviews are damn near poetic.

Truffaut was a great reviewer too in that regard.

I think most working critics respect her importance rather than love her. (There are many that love her work.) She had her detractors then and has them now. But she's such an iconic figure that, it's safe to say, every working critic in America at the very least first got into reviewing partly through her writing more than anyone even if they weren't particularly a fan.

When he reviews a movie he doesn't do it to his own sensibilities but according the what he thinks the audience for that particular film is. That explains why he tends to movies like "Knowing" a good review once in a while because he realizes that the audience for that type of film will enjoy it.

I don't always agree with his taste but usually he is pretty good at pointing out the draw and the flaws of films. I personally think that is the job of a "reviewer". Try to inform the reader so that they'll be able to figure out whether or not the film will fit their own tastes.

Just writing "I liked it" is pointless, and too many "critics" do that. Not surprisingly, the "critics" who usually blame blogs for killing film criticism are the ones that do this the most. It's like they don't get the difference between film criticism and just criticizing.

Personally, I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that his reviews are fun to read. He's a good writer, that manages to not sound too snobby, without sounding like a fan boy either.

Honestly, before I showed up here, the only thing I really associated with him was his tendency to give a lot of movies with racial themes brownie points.

I always liked Ebert. Back when Siskel was alive tho, I'd usually prefer Siskel's reviews but seemed that each of them took turns being nice to average films instead of giving a thumbs down. That way only the really good films would get their coveted two thumbs up and the really bad ones would get two down.

I was going to tear into this one, but everyone else pretty much said it all.

I wasn't going to make any personal attacks though. But I was going to say that I've been following Ebert's reviews for well over 20 years and I can definitely say that he was not considered a joke, or second-fiddle to Siskel. I don't mean by me, I mean in general.

You would definitely know this if you lived in Chicago. But he's known across the globe.

I'm actually willing to say that between Siskel and Ebert, Ebert definitely was more widely recognized.

And yeah, there's the whole Pulitzer thing. I know, you think that's bullhsit, but some people actually consider it prestigious.

55. "I definitely think Ebert is "pop." It doesn't makes his reviews invalid."
In response to Reply # 0

Just because it's a "pop" version of film criticism doesn't necessarily mean it can't be taken seriously.

Personally, I stopped giving Ebert weight over every other critic out there (because I did tend to do that).

There are critics (I'm using that word interchangeably with "reviewer" in this post) that do go more in depth in their critique than Ebert does, but we'd probably be hard-pressed to see their reviews in a newspaper, given the format. And in that format, the kind of writing that Ebert provides probably thrives the most.

It's to the point; you can see whether he likes a movie or not in an easy and brief to read manner. On top of that, he gives out a rating in stars.

I haven't even mentioned the TV show, but what I just wrote could apply too.

So given all that, I just think he's the most popular reviewer out there, and the fact that some people believe he is the be-all end-all of film criticism just plays to the odds given (50% he likes a movie or not, in the frame of his visibility--newspapers, TV--means a whole lot of people will have seen/read and agreed with a lot of his reviews, to the point where a lot think he is the best there is).

Like I said, I stopped giving Ebert weight over every other critic out there and actually give him less weight in some cases nowadays, but I don't think he's across the board bad. I understand that people think he's the best, even when I disagree with that, and it's not that big a deal to me because it's pretty subjective a lot of the time anyway when we're talking about who's a "serious" reviewer and who isn't.
