"Why isn't that women comics aren't as funny as men?"
Sun Jun-21-09 12:50 PM by vee-lover

I've been waiting on a female comic to emerge that is as funny or funnier than Chappelle, Rock, etc. but there just doesn't seem to be a woman comic with that type of funny bone. I mean "The Queens of Comedy" was funny but not *drop dead, hold your stomach funny.*

I like Monique and Wanda Sykes, who are probably the funniest women comics thats out there but their brand of comedy is still not on par with their male counterparts.

Is there a historic reason why this has been the case? Have women not found those topics that are universally funny to everyone? And what sparked this question for me was listening to Kathy Griffin who is SOOOO NOT funny to me. She tries very hard and I have tried to give her a chance but she just isn't funny to me, especially to listen to for more than 30 minutes.

I do, however, think that the black female comics are funnier than their white female counterparts (as is the black male comics are funnier than the white male comics overall) but this isn't racial for me because there are still very few black female comics that are funny.

I mean as far as male comics go, we all know that by and large, Richard Pryor is viewed as the King of Comedy but who is considered the funniest female comic of all time?

I thought the statment/question was pretty clear but I wasn't going to reply with a snarky response...instead I just asked the poster to expound on the 6% she/he did understand.

And by the way, this post isn't coiming out of some sexist, chauvinistic banter against women; it's just something I've noticed over the years.

I really do want to see the "female Richard Pryor" equivalent. (or some female comic in that vein)

I don't really know why there aren't as many quality female comedians, or why I don't know of them.
There are more white female comedians I find funny than black female comedians, but that's mostly because I don't care of Mo'nique or Wanda Sykes and I find Maria Bamford funny, so that's a 1-0 lead for those scoring at home.

I always thought Jeneane (sp) Garafolo and Sarah Silverman were funny (I haven't seen Silverman's show, and any of the racial stuff that's pissed people off in the past).

Um...okay, those are the only two. And admittedly I didn't see Queens of Comedy, it just seemed like a quick, cheap knock-off.

But Ellen has been doing it for a long time now. I heard a bit on yogurt/go-gurt the other day on the radio that was great.

I saw Natasha Leggero do a great set in which she allowed time for an awkward silence to open up and then said, "It's ok...I don't think women are funny either."

meaning, she's funny as shit on her talk show, and when she's talking to people in a non-stand up context.

To be honest, I'm not really familiar with her stand up.

But yeah, she's pretty damned funny.

I never factored in that aspect but that's SO true!

I can't tell you how many times I've heard women say one of the things they look for in a man is a sense of humor. (And I'm sure you already know this) As for men, I think that ranks at the very bottom of out list of things we like about a woman. If she's funny that's cool but it's not a requirement for us.

And I'm sure this carries over into the comedic world as well. Even during slavery, it was the men who played what we now call the "DOZENS" to pass time.

This puts a lot into perspective. Thanx for the link.

At least in a while. But there are so many fucking fantastic female comics. This whole thing was probably born more out of comedy ignorance than misogyny, but simply because you haven't heard of any funny female comics doesn't mean there aren't any.

but i don't think it applies to the female comics themselves (nor does the article try to do that from what i picked up when skimming through it). they're just as funny as the guys (and possibly get less recognition for being so), i just think the telling sign that the premise true is that male comics GREATLY outnumber female comics. women usually don't feel the NEED to be funny like men do. that's all there is to it really.

I can't really think of one universally accepted (all-time )great female comedian either.

Not that there haven't been funny female comics, but there's not one that EVERYBODY names in the "Great comedians" conversation.

I imagine some people probably consider Rosanne the GOAT Female comic though. I never thought she was all that funny, but she was definitely a superstar.

carol burnette and bea arthur are also women i would imagine get more love all around the roseanne. gilda radner has an intensely loyal following as well. and uhm... tina fey has earned a nice little legacy as well.

far as rosey, her "genius" simply lied in her LCD nature. she broke type (shattered it really) and was successful for every reason she realistically shouldn't have been. the show itself was largely hers, and not some simple network creation.

i still say lucy has that queen shit on lock though.

it's a guess but i am willing to bet money that 5 years from now she will be listed as a major influence to a young, fresh crop of female comedians.

between her snl resume, 30 rock, and her two well recieved movies...she aint got goat credentials as of yet but her career at this point does not need validation. at this point, it's, where is she gonna go from here?

without a doubt. Actually, I think she'll probably be cited as an influence to a lot of up-and-comers male and female. Especially comedy writers.

Female comedians speak from a woman's point of view. Guys might have a harder time identifying with their POV. I think naturally guys can relate better to male comics. They get where there coming from more easily. With many comics you have to put yourself in the comedians shoes and you see the humor. It seems guys have a harder time relating to the female perspective on what they find funny.

But there are plenty of funny female comedians out there.

I'd be interested to hear a woman's opinion if they find male comedians that much funnier than female.

she is a rock solid female comedian, and i sugegst you give her a try. great sense of humor that isn't over the top or written with shock value in mind.

>I like Monique and Wanda Sykes, who are probably the funniest

i disagree here, buti am not a fan of either so take that with a grain of salt.

there but their brand of comedy is
>still not on par with their male counterparts.

agreed.

>comics are funnier than the white male comics overall)

LOL. wow. can't cosign this aaaaat all,. if anything you have a preconceived bias, which is fine, but at least admit it.

the problem with this is style and substance. there are so many variants to this equation it's impossible to say. if you want to use examples, you could say "chris rock is funnier then dane cook", which i would agree with, but they really aren't the same thing. i don't listen to dane for political and social humor. well, i don't listen to dane outside of albums one and 2, but thats another story.

but try and tell me that mitch hedberg isn't a million times funnier then martin lawrence, and i'll throw you out a 14th story window on a hotel that skips the 13th floor so you can die earlier.

mmm i would put rodney dangerfield on the same level- but again these are two different schools of thought. it's hard to put the greats against the greats, because the greats are always great in large part due to the niche they carve out for themselves.

his persona is a tough one to really, truly imitate, and richard has an easier style to pick up imo. the only guy to really run with that ball in such a way as to be on level was eddie murphy though. chris rock is a descendant of that but with so much in the way of political and social elements to his humor chris kinda owns his own spot.

but for real? joke for joke these two are on the same level. rodney sorta gets lumped in with his caddyshack cohorts but his no respect schtick was a killer because it was just so well done. sure it's a one trick pony- prior wasn't nearly as limited in terms of material angles-but a lesser comedian, i think, would have difficulty maintaining that whole "my life fucking sucks so bad, here's why" and keeping it fresh.

"What a childhood I had, why, when I took my first step, my old man tripped me!"

"I tell ya when I was a kid, all I knew was rejection. My yo-yo, it never came back!"

"My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met."

i dunno man... thats fucking gold right there. it's sorta like the stephen wright method but with a clear cut persona attached to it, which in my view is a formula for success. it also helps that rodney LOOKED like the kinda guy whose life was permeated with rain clouds and empty whiskey bottles, and you don't even feel sorry for him. you agree with him. if he tells you he wants to cut his wrists, you want to tell him to make sure he does it lengthwise.

buuut thats just me.

maybe I should have qualified it by saying they are the "funniest female black comics"

As far as stand up comedy, I think so but perhaps comedy in general...maybe the white female comics have the edge only because they had opportunities that black female comics weren't privy to.

Maybe Hedberg has the edge now but Martin is comic icon!...At his best in the early 90's his stand up was MUST SEE. (even Chris Rock said it was difficult opening up for Martin back then because no one wanted to see him; they only wanted to see Martin) So I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on that one.

I agree to a point but as far as the Mount Rushmore of comedy is concerned, most,if not all, say that it is Pryor first and foremost...and then Lenny Bruce, Redd Foxx.

I remember last year I was watching an interview with DL Hughley and the interviewer asked him why is it that "black comics are funnier than white comics?" He asked the question as if it was a foregone conclusion that Blacks were by and large funnier than white comics. And DL Hughley response was that Blacks, historically, have had to laugh to keep from crying.

Like "my wife's car broke down when we were going on holiday. It took an hour but luckily I got it going again"

Women stories are like 'my car brokedown on the way, and my breakdown insurance had expired the day before and it was raining and no one would stop to help... I didn't get home untill 8 hours later and I was so exhausted'. Looking for sympathy

Male comics tell self depreciating jokes/stories, and it's extra funny cause it undercuts the efficacy of their masculine thought proces

Female comedians use the same sort of material but it's not unexpected from a female so not as effective
